SOUTHEAST ILLINOIS NEWS
— Ballot hijinks lead Southern Illinois Republicans to challenge party leadership vote – W.J. Kennedy
https://seillinoisnews.com/stories/511395529-ballot-hijinks-lead-southern-illinois-republicans-to-challenge-party-leadership-vote
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Governor Rauner and his hand-picked state GOP Chairman Timothy Schneider are declaring victory in Southern Illinois. But did they actually win? State party officials claim Southern Illinois Republicans voted for a new state central committeeman yesterday, replacing longtime incumbent, former legislator Bob Winchester of Rosiclare with State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). Rose supports Schneider for another four year term; Winchester does not. But county chairmen say an examination of the vote count shows Rose didn’t win and that the fix was in. They’re promising to challenge what they say are manipulated results. “Rauner’s people showed their true colors yesterday,” a source told SE Illinois News. “They’re glad to cheat to win.” “This has made us even more bitter” In the balance is one of 18 spots on the State Republican Party Central Committee, which governs the party and exerts influence up and down the ballot. On Wednesday, GOP precinct committeemen voted to elect their county chairmen and the state central committee members, who will convene in May to choose a party chairman. Schneider recruited Rose to challenge Winchester, a Rauner critic representing Southern IIlinois’ 15 Congressional District, which includes 33 counties. Winchester supported State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the March primary. “Many of us were already bitter and this has made us even more bitter,” Rhonda Belford, Hardin County GOP Chair, told SE Illinois News. “Bob Winchester stood tall for southern Illinois and all of Illinois, and this is how they treat him.” Belford said that some of her fellow county chairmen were offered financial rewards by Schneider. Others were threatened with retribution if they didn’t support Rose over Winchester. “They know not what they do,” she said. “This is all about money, but it’s the wrong kind of money, and in the end it’s probably not going to win them the race anyway.” Winner takes all? Mark Shaw, State Central Committeeman from Lake County’s 10th congressional district, said that he is concerned that some counties may have voted by acclamation, a procedural move that would have given Rose 100 percent of the vote when he may have received just over 50 percent. Shaw, who grew up in Mt. Carmel in Wabash County, said that voting by acclamation could be a violation of state law and some legal action may be in order. Results do show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the ten most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be an impossibility. Several counties, sources tell SE Illinois News, didn’t even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Rauner Downstate Director Randy Pollard, Winchester was not presented as an option, sources say. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. County votes are weighted based on their respective turn-out in the March primary. “There are a lot of irregularities here,” Shaw said. “We want to see the raw data on a precinct level presented to the party.” The Shimkus Machine Aides to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Collinsville) actively recruited Rose to challenge Winchester, offering to help him replace Shimkus in Congress when the opportunity presents itself, sources say. Sources in Madison County, Shimkus’ home which carries the second-largest weighted vote in the district, say that when they, too, voted by acclamation for Winchester, a lawyer volunteer for Shimkus present protested and said acclamation votes were not legal. Shimkus’ District Director, Deb Detmers Fansler, then threatened Madison County precinct committee members by phone. Madison County submitted each candidate’s vote totals to the state GOP, sources say, along with the caveat that they voted by acclamation to deliver all of them to Winchester, who won 59 percent of the actual vote. State GOP officials didn’t include Madison County’s acclamation vote in their official totals; it would have meant Winchester won re-election by 644 votes. Chicago GOP Chairman Chris Cleveland said he would push to see the actual vote data as well. “This was a very contentious election, and it’s important that we have full transparency in the results,” Cleveland said. “That means complete, precinct-level reporting that we can verify.”)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/cannabis/pols-high-on-marijuana-legalization-hope-to-clear-the-air-on-4-20-pot-holiday/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Thursday, Healthy & Productive Illinois, a “marijuana policy group” that has argued against legalization, released its own study. The group argues it would cost the state $670.5 million a year to legalize pot, outweighing annual estimated tax revenue projections of about $566 million. They’re not the only ones not joining the party. Gov. Bruce Rauner told a Downstate TV station in December that it would be a “mistake” to legalize marijuana in Illinois. The Republican governor has, in the past, said he wants more studies on the “ramifications” in states that have legalized the drug. “I do not support legalizing marijuana. I think that’s a mistake. You know there’s a massive, human experiment going on in Colorado, and California, other places. We should see how that’s impacted lives and addiction and hurt young people before we make any decision about it here,” Rauner said in an interview on WSIL in Marion. “I do not support legalizing marijuana.” Still, Rauner instituted a medical marijuana pilot program that started doling out weed to patients in 2015. And Rauner last year signed a bill that decriminalized the possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana, making it a ticketable offense subject to fines of $100 to $200.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bush offered his own prescription for challenging a “poisonous” political environment that he said is “disproportionately located in ZIP codes around Washington, D.C.” “First, voters should penalize rather than reward politicians irrespective of their party that use racist language or call people Nazis or disparage the disabled or make fun of people in order to push someone down to make themselves look better,” he said to loud applause. “That should be a penalty.” Public figures, Bush said, should be held to a higher ethical standard, regardless of party allegiance. “Bad behavior and the kind of language that we accept today, or the kind of actions that we find intolerable for someone we don’t agree with, should have the exact same response to someone that’s on your team,” he said. ” … Right now, we’re so hyperpartisan that if it’s a Democrat doing something outrageous, Republicans are just righteously there to attack, but if it’s a Republican, you hear nothing and vice versa. “To challenge this notion, sometimes bad behavior is just bad behavior.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Effingham County Board is considering a resolution opposing recent proposals in the state legislature for gun control measures. The resolution started as a suggestion by local firearms owners and the businesses that cater to them, said Effingham County Board member David Campbell. He modeled the legislation on a similar resolution passed by the Iroquois County Board on March 13. Campbell consulted with Effingham County State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler, who added a “sanctuary county” section, which attracted the most attention during legislative committee meeting on Monday. Kibler explained the goal is to protect those people affected by future state legislation by prohibiting the county from enforcing “unconstitutional actions.” He drew a parallel with actions in other fields. “If you can be a sanctuary county for undocumented immigrants, why can’t you be one for firearms?” Kibler said. He explained that the section, like the rest of the resolution, is largely symbolic.)

My Democrat superiors at USPS 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997 gave me many chances to become a Democrat. My critics/opponents in TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, Illinois Center Right Coalition, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter, etc. gave me many chances to become one of their operatives or one of their dupes.)

DAILY CALLER
— Students Pursuing Risky Degrees Draw More Than $25 Billion In Yearly Federal Loans – ANDREW KERR (DIERSEN: Did you pursue degrees that were risky, that is, degrees that do not qualify you for good-paying jobs? I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970 when I was 21, an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)
http://dailycaller.com/2018/04/09/student-loan-default-by-major/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Noël Flynn is spending more than 80 percent of her income to pay back tens of thousands of dollars in debt for her Art Therapy degree. In 2016 alone, the Department of Education loaned $25.9 billion to students who, like Flynn, chose degrees under the umbrella of the liberal arts and humanities, an analysis by The Daily Caller News Foundation found. A significant portion of those students are unlikely to have the means to pay back their debt after graduating. “I find myself struggling financially, and the biggest reason why is student loans,” said Flynn, 23, who says she was told the loans “wouldn’t be overwhelming” once she graduated. Most federal student loan programs do not require a credit check, nor do they require a cosigner. Rather, the loans are backed by nothing more than the borrower’s future earnings with a college degree, but the kind of degree isn’t a consideration in the loan process.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: My thinking was pretty simple: News is inherently temporary and seems like it is becoming increasingly hollow. Between print, radio, television and digital, news is now recycled repeatedly. A breaking story can be noteworthy, but by the end of a news cycle, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by meaningless dribble. I figured there was a better use of my time. And if something important happened, I figured the news would find me. Since Thanksgiving, all of my news has come from friends, colleagues and family. My wife, Cheryl, told me about fires and mudslides in Los Angeles, my neighbor Howard told me about political misdeeds, my chief financial officer informed me of stock market ups and downs, my friend Pete alerted me to a TMZ segment that featured me as the reincarnation of an arguably better-looking dead serial killer.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— WILL THE GOV SUCCEED IN PULLING THE ILGOP FURTHER LEFT? STATE CENTRAL COMMITTEE ELECTIONS NEXT TEST
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/04/will-the-gov-succeed-in-pulling-the-ilgop-further-left-state-central-committee-elections-next-test.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican voters split 51 to 49 percent between a liberal Republican incumbent governor and a conservative state representative in the March 20th primary. The vote revealed a dramatic contrast between the party’s wings. In the wake of a party-dividing primary that is still a sore spot among those voters committed to the conservative party platform, another test of the party’s future will be April 18th. That’s when county precinct committeemen gather to pick who will represent them on the State Central Committee, party activists and officials are saying. Demetra Demonte, Illinois’ Republican National Committeewoman and co-chair of the Trump Illinois campaign, told Illinois Review Saturday that the vote will be very important. She did not personally endorse in the 2018 IL GOP gubernatorial primary. “These last few months have been a time of bitter primary battles. The primary is over and we have selected our candidates. This should be a time for reconciliation – bringing together all sides so we can be victorious in November,” Demonte said. “Sadly, it is my understanding there is an effort to thwart conservatives who are running for re-election on the State Central Committee. This effort is counterproductive and will most assuredly backfire in November. If we are to be victorious in November we will need our army of conservative activists…and most of all our conservative voters. How else can we defeat the juggernaut of the Democrat machine?” But the wounds are deep – and for many, irreparable. Governor Rauner won by running ad after ad focused on what amounted to lies about his challenger, Jeanne Ives. Rauner misled uninformed voters to believe Ives was a Madigan co-hort, when Ives has been one of the House’s most vocal opponents to the Speaker. That type of win should never be rewarded, Republicans are saying. Many are discouraged, insulted and wounded. They’re planning to stay at home in November – something that could be devastating for down-ticket Republicans. Illinois Tea Party leader Denise Cattoni told Illinois Review that she’s concerned about the state and its future if conservatives disengage from voting in the fall. But, as a vocal supporter of Jeanne Ives in the gubernatorial primary, she understands the discouragement many conservatives are expressing. She publicly shared her concerns on her Facebook page Friday in a post addressing precinct committeemen. “The ILGOP is trying to purge all conservatives from the State Central Committee. When you attend the April 18th meeting, all of the conservative SCC Chairmen will have a RHINO opponent (after the primary). Stand for your principles! Stand for the ILGOP Platform, Cattoni wrote. “Gov. Rauner has now made it perfectly clear that Conservatives are NOT invited into the IL Republican party, guaranteeing that he will lose to Pritzker.” Cattoni said that of the 90 Tea Party groups around the state going back to 2008, over half of the leadership has moved out of state, having read the political handwriting on the wall. As a movement leader focused on fiscal issues, she supported Bruce Rauner in his 2014 bid. Since then, she’s gotten more involved in Republican Party circles, which has led her to be especially concerned about the two congressional districts where conservative state central committeemen are currently serving, but who backed Jeanne Ives in this year’s gubernatorial primary. State Central Committeeman John McGlasson in the 16th CD and Bob Winchester in the 15th CD are both being challenged by elected state lawmakers – likely put up by Rauner’s people, she says. “Why would State Rep Tom Demmer and Senator Chapin Rose be given MORE power by the ILGOP??” Cattoni wrote. “Rauner’s PAYBACK to conservatives. You are not welcome in the party.” Illinois Review asked McGlasson his thoughts about the challenge he’s facing. He not only backed Jeanne Ives in the gubernatorial primary, he backed challenger James Marter over incumbent Congressman Adam Kinzinger in the 16th CD. The Rauner camp is reaching out to precinct committeemen, urging them to support State Rep. Tom Demmer over McGlasson. State Representative David Weller is circulating a letter among other members, opposing McGlasson. Four that McGlasson knows of did not sign Welter’s letter. McGlasson says he’s committed to the Illinois Republican Party platform as his principle base. He recalls vividly the battle waged at the 2016 IL GOP State Convention over the platform changes Rauner people – including former Party Chairman Pat Brady and SCC member Ryan Higgins – tried to make on family issues. “I worked very hard, along with many others, to bring the platform to the floor at the last convention,” McGlasson told Illinois Review. “And I will continue to fight for conservative values in future platforms. One of the most important duties of state central committee members is the appointment of committee members for the convention. I am very proud of those I appointed last time and the battles they waged.” Stan Bond, SCC member from the 14th CD, although conservative as well, is running unopposed in the SCC race. “You may recall I was one of the committed group who worked through the night to ensure the party platform wasn’t revised per Pat Brady and the chosen platform committee,” Bond told IR. “It was an historic effort that dramatized for all the importance our base places on family values. “I would like to strengthen and clarify our platform on some issues but remain proud of it as written. I strongly believe party support should be focused on candidates who support the platform. That’s why we have a platform,” he said. The platform is key to the conservative majority in the Illinois Republican Party. The vote at that convention on maintaining traditional family values in the party platform was supported in a stand seven-to-one vote – a fact Rauner and his staff either purposely overlook or can’t believe is that important to Republican voters. Demonte, who represents the state to the RNC, stands with the party’s conservatives. While the nation pulls to the right with President Donald Trump at the helm, the Illinois Republican Party is being dragged to the left at the insistence of Governor Rauner and his well-paid campaign staff. “As your Illinois’ Republican National Committeewoman, and as a loyal Republican, I plan to vote for our entire Republican slate in November,” Demonte said. “But I want to assure the party faithful that I remain committed to the conservative principles lined out in the Illinois Republican Party platform, as well as continue to actively engage and push policy at the national level on the Republican National Committee that represents the values of our grassroots.”)

Rauner’s surrogates have made and continue to make it clear that they want Ives and other conservatives out of the party so there’s no need for perfunctory and disingenuous outreach. He and his surrogates are who Republicans chose to lead them. He is the nominee. And Ives wishes him good luck in the general.)

BLAZE
— Department of Homeland Security to establish monitoring system that tracks journalists in live time – Teri Webster
https://www.theblaze.com/news/2018/04/07/department-of-homeland-security-to-establish-monitoring-system-that-tracks-journalists-in-live-time
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Department of Homeland Security plans to create a “Media Monitoring” system to track the reports and “sentiments” of journalists, bloggers and social media stars. A computer dashboard for the database will allow the DHS to monitor journalists in “live time” by name, topics covered and their location, according to specifications for the project. A “request for information” on FedBizOpps.gov states that the intelligence agency wants to hire a contractor to identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security — or any particular event. Companies interested in the project are being asked to submit their qualifications and other information. The revelation comes amid a heated national debate about gun laws, concerns about “fake news,” and questions about how foreign interests used social media to manipulate U.S. elections and policy. Who will be monitored? Media to be monitored and tracked includes print, online, broadcast, cable, radio, local sources, national/international outlets, traditional news sources, trade and industry publications, and social media “influencers,” according to the project specifications. The scope of sources to be tracked spans 290,000 global news sources in more than 100 languages. Information gathered will include contact details and “any other information that could be relevant, including publications this influencer writes for, and an overview of the previous coverage published by the influencer.” Specifications indicate the contractor must have the ability to analyze media coverage in terms of “content, volume, sentiment, geographical spread, top publications, media channels, reach, top posters, momentum and circulation.” Further, the database will be searchable by location, beat and media type, as well as keywords and concepts. What have free press advocates said? Forbes contributor Michelle Fabio called the move “today’s installment of ‘I’m Not Terrified, You Are.’” The agency’s request for information is “enough to cause nightmares of constitutional proportions, particularly as the freedom of the press is under attack worldwide,” she wrote. The column was tweeted by the Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent, non-profit group concerned with protecting freedom of the press worldwide. The DHS was quick to quash what it called conspiracy theories about the database. DHS’s press secretary wrote on Twitter that concerns about the database are coming from “tin foil hat wearing, black helicopter conspiracy theorists.” “This is nothing more than the standard practice of monitoring current events in the media,” Tyler Q. Houlton wrote. . .The Media Monitoring program falls under the DHS’s National Protection and Programs Directorate. Included in the division is the Office of Biometric Identity Management, Office of Cyber and Infrastructure Analysis, Office of Cybersecurity and Communications, Office of Infrastructure Protection, and The Federal Protective Service, which protects federal facilities. DHS has set an April 13, 2018 deadline for companies to submit their information.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The next leader of the Florida House is taking a step up in national politics as incoming Speaker Jose Oliva, R-Miami, is taking a leadership role with the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC). Oliva was one of 22 officials from 18 states who will serve on the RSLC’s executive committee for its Future Majority Project initiative which is being chaired by Governors Susana Martinez of New Mexico and Brian Sandoval of Nevada and Lieutenant Governors Jenean Hampton of Kentucky and Evelyn Sanguinetti of Illinois. “We started the Future Majority Project in 2011 to support Republican candidates who better reflect the growing diversity of the American electorate. Since its founding we have helped elect over 100 diverse Republican state legislators and are continuing to expand this initiative into 2018,” RSLC President Matt Walter said on Thursday. “The RSLC’s Future Majority Project is critically important because our government functions best when its representatives reflect the growing diversity of the electorate. I am the daughter of teenage immigrant parents and I am proof that the American Dream is possible,” said Sanguinetti. “As our country’s first Latina lieutenant governor, I have a unique governing philosophy and policy perspective that benefits the residents I serve. I am proud to co-chair this effort to recruit diverse Republican candidates to our party.” “I’m personally aware of the unique challenges conservative minority candidates may encounter when running for office. Yet, I enjoy sharing GOP core principles of life, liberty and personal responsibility with anyone who’ll listen,”Hampton said. She is the first black person elected to statewide office in Kentucky’s history. “The Future Majority Project’s efforts to encourage, recruit, and support diverse Republican candidates for state offices are vital to the growth and success of the Republican Party.” The RSLC has spent almost $20 million with the Right Women, Right Now initiative and the Future Majority Project to “elect and support dynamic female and diverse candidates for state level offices.” Oliva is the only Florida Republican serving on the Future Majority Project’s executive committee. He will take the gavel from current House Speaker Richard Corcoran after the November elections.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— BLUEDORN: THE IL GOP’S FUTURE WILL BE DETERMINED APRIL 18
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2018/04/bluedorn-the-il-gops-future-will-be-determined-april-18.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The time for soft words has passed. The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) is controlled by a cartel of men and women who ignore the Republican Platform, support (either directly or indirectly) the killing of babies, and can by no means be called “conservative.” Do you have an interest in this one, perhaps last, window of opportunity to work some good in the IRP? On April 18, every county in Illinois will hold a county Republican Party convention. At this county convention, Republican precinct committeemen will fill two important party positions: 1. The chair of the county Republican organization 2. The IRP State Central Committee (SCC) member that represents that county The IRP is governed by the SCC, which consists of 18 members, one representing each of the state’s congressional districts. The SCC members are elected by a vote of the precinct committeemen within each congressional district. The SCC is a powerful group. Their purpose is to “establish, organize, and promote the operations of the Republican Party.” They determine which candidates will receive money from the IRP and also who will serve on the Illinois State Convention platform committee. If you are a precinct committeeman, we urge you to vote for a liberty-minded, pro-life candidate that adheres to the Illinois Republican Party Platform. If you are not a precinct committeeman, you can still help by appealing to your precinct committeeman to vote for a conservative, Platform-respecting candidate. If there is no liberty-minded, pro-life candidate in your district, we suggest you abstain from voting. A substantial undervote sends a compelling message that the base of the IRP is conservative and wants conservatives to direct the IRP. Here are the State Central Committee 2018 candidates conservatives can personally recommend. Each one is worthy of the base’s support. Be brave. Be bold. Your boldness will strengthen the weaker ones to do good.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Department of Homeland Security wants to track the comings and goings of journalists, bloggers and other “media influencers” through a database. The DHS’s “Media Monitoring” plan, which was first reported by FedBizOpps.gov, would give the contracting company “24/7 access to a password protected, media influencer database, including journalists, editors, correspondents, social media influencers, bloggers etc.” in order to “identify any and all media coverage related to the Department of Homeland Security or a particular event.” The database would be designed to monitor the public activities of media members and influencers by “location, beat and influencers,” the document says. The chosen contractor should be able to “present contact details and any other information that could be relevant including publications this influencer writes for, and an overview of the previous coverage published by the influencer.” The request comes amid concerns regarding accuracy in media and the potential for U.S. elections and policy to be influenced via “fake news.” The plan calls for the ability to track 290,000 news sources including online, print, broadcast and social media. Also, it would have the ability to track media coverage in over 100 languages, along with the “ability to create unlimited data tracking, statistical breakdown, and graphical analyses on ad-hoc basis.”)

To this day, far too many who supported Bruce Rauner in the 2014 Republican gubernatorial primary punish those like me who supported Kirk Dillard in that primary. (FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s difficult to say when this weekly show was taped, but here’s the DGA… Jeanne Ives: “Bruce Rauner Lied” 17 days after the Republican primary, and instead of a unity event, state Rep. Jeanne Ives is calling Gov. Bruce Rauner a liar to anyone who will listen. In an interview with EWTN Pro-Life Weekly last night, Jeanne Ives said “Bruce Rauner lied” to the Republican base and touted her close finish in the Republican primary. She then promised to continue holding the failed governor “accountable” for the rest of his term, while failing to offer even a hint of an endorsement of his reelection. “48% of Illinois Republicans voted for someone else and Bruce Rauner is doing nothing to repair his fractured party,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Rauner’s approval ratings are in the gutter, his own party is in open revolt, and his chances at reelection look bleaker by the day.” COMMENT FROM DuPage Bard Friday, Apr 6, 18 @ 3:57 pm: “Bruce Rauner isn’t going to apologize. He’s going to run Madigan ads nothing more nothing less. He’ll let the chips fall where they may. Pat Brady said right after the election- the Dan profit’s and Jeanne Ives are bad for the party. Bruce and his folks don’t want the Ives, McSweeney’s, Morrison’s, McCarter’s etc. in the Rauner Republican Party. They bash Trump, they lied and tried to destroy Jeanne, they installed a yes man for their leader (3 times in a row), they vote against party platform how much more are real Republicans supposed to take?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But is Rauner practicing what he preaches? The Democratic Governor’s Association says no. The group claims Governor Rauner hasn’t met with Ives since the election. Rauner denied the claim, saying he spoke to Ives “right after the election.” He also said since the election, he’s been holding unity meetings across the state. “What I’m doing, pretty much every day, is traveling around the state,” Rauner said. “Meeting with not only Republican elected officials as well as grassroots activists, but also meeting with many community leaders, Democrats, independent voters, talking about coming together as a people.” Ives isn’t backing off her criticisms of Rauner though. She told the EWTN Global Catholic Network Thursday that Rauner lied about the abortion bill he signed in September. “The pro-life community needs a wake-up call,” Ives said. News 3 reached out to Ives for comment and we have not heard back.)

They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000. Failing that, they successfully focused on ending my TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairmanship, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee membership, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster service, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee membership, and American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board membership.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-met-illinois-conservative-news-20180327-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A copy of the East Central Reporter landed in select mailboxes in 2016 with the look of a typical local newspaper. It had a community calendar. It listed high school sports statistics. And it contained an article about a statehouse candidate’s pitch to voters. But was that story news? Or was it a novel form of political advertising? Recently obtained documents and interviews show that an organization called Think Freely Media helped fund the operation that produced the article for the East Central Reporter’s website. As a nonprofit, Think Freely is forbidden by federal law from engaging in politics, and it has described the articles it funded as news. But State Board of Elections records also show a political committee, Liberty Principles, paid the same private company to publish the story in a print newspaper and mail it. That group, which state law says must spend its money on politicking, has labeled such content political ads. What these organizations have in common is one of the state’s most visible and controversial political figures, Dan Proft. Though Proft is known for backing conservative candidates for office through Liberty Principles, recent tax, business and campaign filings illuminate how other organizations with ties to Proft helped spread his political views through publications that showcase candidates he supports. It’s a situation that encompasses not only ethical questions about a modern tool of Illinois political warfare but also the national discussion over what constitutes “fake news.” Since 2015, thousands of articles have been published in more than two dozen print and online publications tied to Proft, who in addition to heading Liberty Principles has served as a consultant to Think Freely Media. The first articles were produced by a firm run by media entrepreneur Brian Timpone, a longtime friend of Proft’s who has frequently discussed Illinois politics as a guest on Proft’s morning radio show. Timpone’s firm, called Newsinator, also has a history of doing paid political work and offers marketing services to companies under the name Interactive Content Services. After Proft’s political committee paid Newsinator in 2016 to mail print versions of some publications to voters, the state elections board ordered Liberty Principles to identify such materials as political advertising more clearly in the future. But regulators did not impose fines, and since then, records and interviews show, Proft has doubled down on his media venture by teaming with Timpone to start a new private company, Local Government Information Services, that now runs the websites and publications created by Newsinator. (GRAPHIC) The new firm lists 29 websites it controls and 11 print publications, with names ranging from the Grundy Reporter to the North Cook News. The sites typically mix community calendars and local sports coverage, largely computer-generated, with articles that range from statistical dives into local government spending to stories that feature candidates whom Proft’s political committee has supported. The publications’ emergence over the past three years has drawn a range of critics, including Proft’s political opponents in both parties as well as journalists who have worked for traditional news organizations. Among them is Charlie Wheeler, a former longtime Chicago Sun-Times reporter who now directs the public affairs reporting program at the University of Illinois at Springfield. “They purport to be newspapers, but in my judgment they don’t subscribe to the tenets of traditional journalism. They do not provide balanced coverage,” Wheeler said. . .Different views of news. . .Funding a network. . .An ‘electioneering’ paper. . .New company takes over)

— Lower property taxes? Pretty much everywhere else. – DENNIS RODKIN
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/realestate/20180406/CRED0701/180409929
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Homeowners in the Chicago area are paying higher property tax bills, on average, than 93 percent of the country, according to a new report. The average 2017 tax bill on a single-family home in Lake County was higher than nearly 99 percent of the 1,414 U.S. counties covered by the report, released April 5 by Attom Data Solutions. The region’s other counties aren’t far behind. The average bill in DuPage County is higher than nearly 98 percent, followed by Kane County and McHenry County (both 96 percent), Cook County (94 percent) and Will County (93 percent). The report covers only counties where there are 10,000 single-family homes or more. In all, the nation has 3,144 counties, or more than twice the number in Attom’s study. Attom’s report includes a county-by-county map of the average property tax bill for single-family homes.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD: HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: Officials at E.P.A. raised concerns and were ousted – Eric Lipton, Kenneth P. Vogel and Lisa Friedman (DIERSEN: Have you raised concerns? I have. All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government, I raised concerns about my superiors using Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to waste the careers of and to get rid of their employees who were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran who they had not promoted to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40. Consequently, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

My critics/opponents blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems. They blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all defeats that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000. Since 2000, my critics/opponents have unsuccessfully focused on stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails and sending them out. Failing that, they successfully focused on ending my TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairmanship, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee membership, Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster service, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee membership, and American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board membership.)

— Consumer Bureau’s Chief Gives Big Raises, Even as He Criticizes Spending – Stacy Cowley (DIERSEN: In 1980, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take a $19,203/year (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-9 Step 10. If I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran, GAO would have offered me a $4,523/year (5%) pay increase in today’s dollars to transfer, that is, a promotion from GS-12 Step 5 ($91,880) to GS-13 Step 1 ($96,403). GAO audits IRS. I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1 (currently $81,071/year) – GS-12 Step 5 (currently $91,880) levels. I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976. I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/05/business/cfpb-mick-mulvaney-pay-raises.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mr. Mulvaney appointed two senior staff members who are paid salaries of more than $230,000, amounts that are far above what they had been earning in their previous government jobs in Washington, according to agency documents obtained by The New York Times through a public records request. The consumer bureau, as well as fellow financial regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, is allowed under federal law to pay employees significantly more than other government agencies can pay. The rationale is that the higher salaries are necessary to recruit skilled employees who otherwise might land jobs on Wall Street. As a result, the C.F.P.B. is stocked with employees who earn more than the average Washington bureaucrat. Of the agency’s 1,600 employees, 219 make more than $200,000, according to the records reviewed by The Times.)

ABC NEWS
— Democrats see path to House majority that cuts through the suburbs – EMILY GOODIN
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/democrats-path-house-majority-cuts-suburbs/story?id=54134040
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sean Casten, who won the Democratic primary in November to take on longtime GOP Rep. Peter Roskam in Illinois’ 6th Congressional District in suburban Chicago, acknowledged he is liberal on some issues and centrist on others. “There are issues like choice issues that I’m as far left as they come. There are issues like markets and national security where I’m pretty centrist. Whatever the letter is after my name is what it is,” Casten, a clean-energy executive, told ABC News. Like Houlahan in Pennsylvania and Casten in Illinois, other Democrats like Susie Lee running in suburban Las Vegas, Elissa Slotkin vying for a congressional seat outside Lansing, Michigan, and Dean Phillips in the Minneapolis suburbs are expected to need Republican voters to cross over and vote for them if they want victory in November. As Casten said of his primary campaign, “We were running a campaign to expand and reach out to the whole electorate.” He beat two Democratic women who were favored by party members. Illinois has an open primary system. “If there is ever a time to steal players and put them on your team, this is the time. This is the same strategy we’ll use in the general,” he said. And neither Casten nor Houlahan would commit to voting for Nancy Pelosi for speaker, but they also didn’t rule it out. Both said they would need to think about who got their vote and consider all the candidates for the position.)

The area of concentration for my 1976 MBA from Loyola was personnel management. What work experience do you have? I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned the work experience that I gained working for the Post Office 1966-1969, for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880, and for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325. What opinion do those who dominate your municipality, your township/ward, your county, and Illinois have of the work experience that you have? Based on their words and their actions, those who dominate Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois have an extremely low opinion of the work experience that I have.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: An obscure White House office responsible for recruiting and vetting thousands of political appointees has suffered from inexperience and a shortage of staff, hobbling the Trump administration’s efforts to place qualified people in key posts across government, documents and interviews show. At the same time, two office leaders have spotty records themselves: a college dropout with arrests for drunken driving and bad checks and a lance corporal in the Marine Corps reserves with arrests for assault, disorderly conduct, fleeing an officer and underage drinking. The Presidential Personnel Office (PPO) is little known outside political circles. But it has far-reaching influence as a gateway for the appointed officials who carry out the president’s policies and run federal agencies.)

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) governs the IRP. Every 4 years, at IRP county party conventions, one IRP SCC member for each of Illinois’ 18 congressional districts is elected for 4 year terms. All votes taken by the IRP SCC are by weighted vote. Weighted vote is determined by the number of Republican primary ballots that were cast statewide divided by the number of Republican primary ballots that were cast in each of the 18 congressional districts. Who are the applicants for each of the 18 IRP SCC positions? What are their backgrounds and qualifications? Why are they running? Exactly what do they promise to do if elected? Applications were due by 5:00 PM, Monday, March 26, 2018. SEE: https://illinois.gop/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/2018-SCC-Application.pdf IRP SCC members will be elected at April 18, 2018 IRP county party conventions. What weighted vote will each of those IRP SCC members have? Every 4 years, each IRP SCC member appoints a member of the IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee. I have already asked Bob Grogan, an announced candidate for the IRP SCC 6th Congressional District position, to appoint me to the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee, like Ron Smith appointed me in 2008. – Dave Diersen

— Indiana GOP asking Hoosier Republicans to submit party platform suggestions – Dan Carden (DIERSEN: Outstandingly, in 2008, Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee member Ron Smith appointed me to IRP’s State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee. Very few changes to IRP’s 2008 platform were made at IRP’s 2012 and 2016 State Conventions.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Indiana Republican Party is seeking suggestions about what it should stand for and what it should oppose, as GOP leaders work to craft a platform for delegates to consider adopting in June at the party’s biennial state convention. The Indiana GOP Platform Committee next month is holding three public hearings for Hoosier Republicans to recommend positions, policies and programs for the 2018 party platform. The hearing happening closest to Northwest Indiana is set for 6 p.m., Eastern time, April 12 at the St. Joseph County Republican Headquarters, 4133 S. Main St., South Bend. Additional hearings are scheduled for the same time April 4 at Greenwood City Hall and April 16 at Jeffersonville Township Public Library. Individuals can reserve a spot to testify during a hearing, or submit written platform suggestions without appearing by emailing platform@indiana.gop. “We’re the party of proven leadership and the party that’s delivering real solutions to Indiana’s biggest challenges,” said Kyle Hupfer, Indiana GOP chairman. “Our party platform and these hearings unite us as Republicans, bringing us all together under a set of people-focused principles that are making life better for all Hoosiers.” In addition to adopting a platform, Republican delegates to this year’s state convention in Evansville will nominate the party’s general election candidates for secretary of state, state auditor and state treasurer.)

If I had not been denied my 7th Amendment rights in Diersen v. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Sheriff Hodgson is requesting Congress pass Rep. Bob Goodlatte’s (R-VA) “Securing America’s Future Act,” which would: Authorize full construction of a border wall Mandate E-Verify to keep illegal aliens from taking American jobs Reduce overall legal immigration to the U.S. to raise the wages of American workers For pro-American immigration reformers, for months, the Goodlatte plan has been considered the best option for the Republicans in Congress to help Trump fulfill his immigration promises. Though the plan would allow a small group of illegal aliens to stay in the U.S., the amnesty would be offset with immediate reductions in legal immigration, whereas the country currently admits more than one million legal immigrants every year.)
