— Where is the Republican primary strength in your township? It definitely is in the west side of DuPage County’s Milton Township. In the March 20, 2018 Republican primary, of the township’s 130 precincts, of its 73 precincts on its west side, 40 were RED (between 35.5% and 17.8% of registered voters cast Republican ballots), 19 were YELLOW (between 17.6% and 13.2%), and 14 were BLUE (between 13.2% and 1.1%). Of its 57 precincts on its east side, only 3 were RED (between 35.5% and 17.8%), 25 were YELLOW (between 17.6% and 13.2%), and 29 were BLUE (between 13.2% and 1.1%). – Dave Diersen

However, in the March 20 primary election, 68 voted for Ives, while only 43 voted for Rauner, and only 15 of Milton Township’s 130 precincts had a higher percentage Republican turnout – 122 (22.2%) of the precinct’s 504 registered voters cast Republican ballots. Further, the precincts to the east, southeast, southwest, and west all had high Republican turnouts in the March 20 primary election. Jeanne Ive’s Precinct 65 to the east had a 24.9% turnout, Robert Jacobsen’s Precinct 25 where Roskam lives to the southeast had a 24.1% Republican turnout, Beth Tatro’s Precinct 130 to the southwest had a 33.5% Republican turnout, and Ron Menna’s Precinct 85 to the west had a 21.8% Republican turnout.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since graduating two years ago from a small private high school in Queens, Ya’seen Madyun has completed a culinary training program and has attended security training courses, all in the hopes of landing a job that pays anywhere near $50,000. In January, Mr. Madyun, now 22, sought assistance at one of the city’s Workforce1 centers. He said he was directed toward an opening at a Family Dollar on New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn, a good 90-minute subway ride from his home in Far Rockaway, Queens. When he arrived, 15 people were already waiting to apply. “I’m used to a line,” Mr. Madyun said, adding that he never heard back about the job. He knows many young people in his neighborhood who are in a similar situation. “They want a full-time job,” he said, “anything 9 to 5.” It has been a year since Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a $1.5 billion New York Works program aimed at creating 100,000 jobs paying $50,000 or more over the next decade. (FROM THE ARTICLE: With unemployment at 3.8 percent, its lowest level in many years, the labor market seems healthy. But that number hides a perplexing anomaly: The percentage of men who are neither working nor looking for work has risen substantially over the past several decades. The issue, in economist’s jargon, is labor force participation. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys households, every adult is put into one of three categories. Those who have a job are employed. Those who are not working but are searching for a job are unemployed. Those who are neither working nor looking for work are counted as out of the labor force. This last group is ignored when calculating the unemployment rate. The presumption is that if a person without a job isn’t looking for one, then he or she doesn’t want one, and the joblessness is not a problem. But is that really accurate? The data show some striking changes over time. Among women, the share out of the labor force has fallen from 66 percent in 1950 to 43 percent today. That is not surprising in light of changing social norms and the greater career opportunities now open to women. Men, however, exhibit the opposite long-term trend. In 1950, 14 percent of men were out of the labor force. Today, that figure stands at 31 percent. Some of this change is easy to explain. People now spend more years in school, delaying their start of work. In addition, as life expectancy rises, people have longer retirements. A man retiring at age 65 in 1950 could expect to live another 13 years. Today, a man retiring at that age has an average retirement of 18 years. Yet schooling and retirement explain only part of what has occurred. Consider prime-age men, those from the ages of 25 to 54. These men are generally well past their schooling and well before their retirement. Yet this group has also been exiting the labor force. In 1950, only 4 percent of prime-age men were not working or looking for work. Today, that figure is 11 percent.)

Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton, is putting some distance between himself and the Trump administration on the volatile issue of whether to seize and separately hold the children of immigrant parents who are arrested for illegally trying to enter the country. But the size and duration of the distance isn’t quite clear yet. And Roskam’s Democratic re-election foe, Sean Casten, promptly attacked Roskam’s action as inadequate. Roskam’s move came in a statement late yesterday, in which he said that “dragging children away from their parents” should not be a means to securing the U.S. border. “The events unfolding at our nation’s borders are heartbreaking. Being forcibly separated from a child is a parent’s worst nightmare and I cannot fathom the pain these families are enduring,” said Roskam, who already was under pressure from major donors and others to do something to break the immigration standoff. “Every day these children spend apart from their parents, confused, scared, and alone, inflicts additional and unnecessary trauma.” “While I believe we have a responsibility to secure our borders, I also believe that how we treat strangers reflects the moral values this country was founded on. Dragging children away from their parents ought not be a part of the solution,” he continued. “I stand with residents of the 6th District and urge the Department of Justice and Homeland Security to reverse the zero tolerance policy that removes children from their parents at the border.” U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions shows no sign of doing so. In a speech yesterday, he even cited a Bible passage—once used to defend slavery—in arguing that God wants citizens to obey the laws of their country. All he’s doing is enforcing a law that Democrats and former President Barack Obama could have changed, Sessions and Trump have said. But Obama didn’t enforce the law in the way Session has, grabbing pre-teen children and holding them in camps and other facilities sometimes thousands of miles away, with little if any contact with their parents. So, what is Roskam going to do to pursue his views and change U.S policy? Roskam’s spokeswoman said he would have supported compromise legislation that House Speaker Paul Ryan is pushing to end family division while giving Trump some things he wants, such as money for the Mexican wall. But Trump today said he wouldn’t sign it, dealing the bill a possibly fatal blow. Given that, what will Roskam do now to turn up pressure on Sessions, Trump and others to back off? Roskam apparently wants to let the dust settle for a few days and see what happens next. Casten is pouncing. “Congress is supposed to be a ‘check’ on the President, not a rubber stamp. It’s clear that neither the Department of Justice nor the Department of Homeland security will act against the president’s wishes,” Casten’s campaign said in a statement. “So we need a Congress with the backbone to pass a law and make this stop. Peter Roskam won’t do it. Sean Casten will. And that’s the fundamental difference in this campaign between an independent Democrat and a Trump Republican who votes with his leader 94 percent of the time.” No word yet on where the Chicago area’s two other GOP congressmen, Randy Hultgren of Plano and Adam Kinzinger of Channahon, stand. But watch for this issue to get increased attention because, even today, TV film of scared kids locked up away from their mom and dad is horrible politics.)

Lasse installed in front of his Mount Prospect home a roughly 15-square-foot plywood sign reading “TRUMP” in big red letters, surrounded by the words “Make America Great Again.” Not being naive, Lasse knew the sign wouldn’t be popular with everyone. He set up a camera in his front window to capture video of anyone who would do the sign harm. Sure enough, footage shows that a pair of young men came along about 9:30 p.m. Friday and stole the sign from the yard. Lasse found pieces of it the next morning on the bank of nearby Weller Creek. Yet under the Obama administration, hiring practices for the federal government were moved away from merit to fulfill goals irrelevant to the positions.
