— The number of people defaulting on federal student loans is rising – Danielle Douglas-Gabriel  (DIERSEN: Did you take out a student loan to pay for your bachelor’s degree?  I did not, and I strongly doubt that I could have. While I was in high school, many, if not most, if not virtually everyone viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, and I was draft bait.)

The event was sponsored by the Palos Park GOP. In Rauner’s place, Rauner’s conservative opponent in the Republican primary, William J. Kelly, took his place. “I took pro-sanctuary state, pro-taxpayer-funded abortion traitor Bruce Rauner’s place at the Southwest Republican picnic and I will take his place across Illinois, including the Illinois Governor’s office,” Kelly said. Our pro-sanctuary state, pro-abortion Governor was too cowardly to face this crowd.” “Everybody at the picnic told me they were voting for me and if Rauner had showed himself, he would have been booed out of the park. They’re right.” Kelly added. Kelly announced his campaign for Governor in May, when GOP leaders were silent on Rauner. Kelly has publicly opposed Rauner’s taxpayer-funding of Planned Parenthood, his bill forcing Christian doctors to promote abortion, his sanctuary state bill, and HB40.)

Nevertheless, a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. Constructively, for the last 20 years, GAO has forced the Civil Service Retirement System to pay me $50,856/year or $1,017,120 in today’s dollars to stay home and to not come to work.)

FOX NEWS CHICAGO
— Those who are pro-life feel betrayed by Rauner after signing of abortion bill – Mike Flannery  (DIERSEN: From what I see, any candidate who runs against Rauner or against any Rauner-backed candidate in the Republican primary next year will be called a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.)
http://www.fox32chicago.com/news/local/those-who-are-pro-life-feel-betrayed-by-rauner-after-signing-of-abortion-bill
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The governor has no path to victory. Bruce Rauner is done. He cannot win,” said State. Rep. Peter Breen. He’s the Republican floor leader in the Illinois House and he’s now leading a revolt of social conservatives against the party’s governor. It’s political fallout from Bruce Rauner’s surprise decision to sign into law an abortion rights bill he previously promised to veto. But the governor’s Republican critics are now offering other reasons to reject him. Lombard’s State Rep. Peter Breen claims that only after Gov. Rauner was excluded from the face-to-face bargaining did other Republicans finally achieve the most basic agreements with democrats in the state capitol. “When you look at everything from the budget negotiations and a range of other issues, he is at the point now where he can no longer be in the room where they are negotiating agreements with the general assembly,” Breen said. An outspoken pro-life Republican, Breen insists his unhappiness with Gov. Rauner’s leadership goes far beyond the abortion issue. Some party activists were stunned by Rauner’s decision to sign the so-called “Trust Act.” They complain it made Illinois a sanctuary state by prohibiting local law enforcement from working in some cases with U.S. immigration and customs agents.  Others are offended by Rauner’s public posture on President Trump. “He won’t say President Trump’s name.  Won’t even acknowledge his existence,” said State Rep. David McSweeney. A former state party chairman, though, says Rauner’s unorthodox approach has worked for other Republicans in heavily Democratic Illinois. “We see what model actually works in this state with Jim Edgar, who was three terms who was pro-choice. Judy Baar Topinka, Mark Kirk. I know a lot of the people on the right get angry with that. But we’ve gotta be realistic about the state we live in,” Pat Brady said. Those leading this Republican revolt against Gov. Rauner know they face a tight timetable and time is not on their side. They need to find a candidate for governor, a running mate for Lt. — Rauner’s left turns on abortion, immigration put his political base in doubt – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: From what I see, any candidate who runs against Rauner or against any Rauner-backed candidate in the Republican primary next year will be called a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-abortion-bill-fallout-met-1001-20170930-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner used his money and power to rebuild the Illinois Republican Party and ensure loyalty to him. Still, it’s unclear now whether Rauner’s wealth will be able to keep rank-and-file Republicans in line. Writing “big campaign checks,” Breen contended, is “the only unique feature left in Rauner’s favor” and something that may make others reluctant to criticize the governor. That means “we’re going to have to find alternate sources of funding,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many of us dream of having enough money to shrug off the workaday chains and embrace freedom. (Or so we’re told.) Wanczyk, the Repsels, and other lottery winners face similar choices: Splurge or invest? Keep working or quit? We imagine many readers just took a nanosecond to make their choice. They may be shocked to learn what researchers have found: Most American winners have kept working after winning the lottery. Some started their own businesses, or scaled back to part time. Most often they haven’t changed employers. From the Department of Timeless Quotations: “Certainly, money is important, but there are a lot of other aspects to work that play a big role: relationships, achievement needs that people have, status needs outside of money,” Bowling Green State University psychology professor Scott Highhouse told The Christian Science Monitor back in 2004.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans are split as to whether they should abandon Governor Bruce Rauner after he signed bill into law on Thursday that expands Medicaid to cover abortions. GOP State Senator Dan McConchie says Rauner’s signature underscores grave concerns Republicans have with him as their party’s nominee in next year’s election. DAILY HERALD
— Suburban GOP upset enough with abortion bill to find challenger to Rauner?  Wheaton’s Ives ‘flattered’ at buzz for a possible candidacy – Susan Sarkauskas
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170929/suburban-gop-upset-enough-with-abortion-bill-to-find-challenger-to-rauner
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton Republican state Rep. Jeannie Ives said Friday she is flattered by all the talk about whether she will run against incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner in the March primary. Especially after Rauner signed a law Thursday to have Medicaid pay for abortions, he is “unelectable as a Republican,” she said. . .Ives’ name is being thrown about on radio, social media and print as a strong primary challenger to Rauner who would draw support from outraged social conservatives. “That’s very flattering … but there’s been no decision on my part,” Ives said. She was one of many Republican legislators who publicly campaigned for Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda,” which dealt with money-related matters such as workers’ compensation and pensions. But she called Thursday’s decision on abortion “egregious” and “very extreme.” “Everybody I talk to is disavowing him. … This is a bridge too far for most Republicans,” she said. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti of Wheaton released a statement disagreeing with Rauner but also saying she would continue to work with him to accomplish other goals. State Sen. Jim Oberweis, also a fan of the Turnaround Agenda, said Rauner should have vetoed the bill on cost alone, saying the state is in “deep financial stress” and can’t afford new spending. He is also disappointed with Rauner’s recent actions concerning treatment of undocumented immigrants. But, he said, he knew Rauner was not a social conservative. “I respect the man. I think he has done a great job in standing up to Michael Madigan,” Oberweis said. Party unity? Schneider said the party must focus on beating the Democrats. “We need a check on the Democrats in Springfield,” said Pat Brady of St. Charles, former leader of the state Republican Party and a Rauner supporter. He doesn’t see a viable challenger to Rauner, especially since he has a huge campaign fund and a month of signature-collecting under his belt. Gubernatorial candidates need a minimum of 5,000 signatures on their petitions, which are due Dec. 4. “I think the reality is nobody could beat him in a primary,” Brady said. “The political reality in this state is there are a substantial amount of voters in Cook and the collar counties” that are abortion rights supporters, Brady said. “He took a real strong talking point away from the Democrats.” Ives disagrees. “Money isn’t everything. The grass-roots (Republicans) are very upset. I’m not sure Rauner’s re-electable. “Maybe if he switched parties he might be able to run as a Democrat.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a phone interview, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a social and economic conservative and West Point graduate from Wheaton, said she’s concluded that Rauner “cannot be elected next year.” “It’s his decision whether or not to run. If he does, I hope we’d put up a primary opponent against him, because I won’t be supporting him,” Ives continued. Asked who that might be, Ives replied, “That’s an open question.” When I said that sounds like she’s interested, she answered, “I’ve not ruled it out,” noting not only Rauner’s “flip flop” on the abortion bill but also his earlier decision to sign bills boosting funding for Chicago Public Schools and directing law enforcement officials not to cooperate with federal immigration agents in many cases involving those in the country illegally.)

— Does Rauner’s abortion decision mean he won’t run again? – Eric Zorn  (DIERSEN: Whose advice is Rauner taking? Obviously, it is from someone who wants him and Sanguinetti to lose the March 20, 2018 Illinois Republican primary. Or is Rauner counting on millions of Democrats to cross over and to vote for him and Sanguinetti in that primary?  Ever-increasingly, in my precinct, those who vote for Democrats in general elections cast Republican primary ballots to do whatever damage that they can.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-perspec-zorn-rauner-abortion-20170928-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Whether base Republican voters in Illinois are as riled and hungry for disruption of the political order as voters in Alabama is uncertain, but hostile responses from the right during and after Rauner’s announcement suggests that they might well be. “Bruce Rauner is a failed governor who lied to the people of Illinois,” seethed state Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills. “I have given Bruce Rauner every benefit of the doubt,” said a statement from House Republican floor leader Peter Breen. “ I can no longer support him. And whether or not they are able to agree publicly, I know hundreds of elected Republicans, along with hundreds of thousands of Republican voters, who feel the same way I do.” I get that. Opposition to abortion runs strong among Republican voters, and Rauner’s decision to sign a bill that expands Medicaid funding of the procedure and includes abortion services in the health insurance plans for state employees disappoints them profoundly. . .Rauner is a wealthy man who doesn’t need this job and has learned, even if he won’t say so publicly, that he’s not very good at it. Attorney General Lisa Madigan shocked the Illinois political establishment with her recent announcement that she would not seek re-election to a fifth term. A similar announcement from Rauner, while more consequential, would be far less shocking under the circumstances. I didn’t hear back when I queried his campaign about this possibility Thursday. But the haggard man dully answering reporters’ questions that afternoon while bracing for the howls of betrayal from his former supporters didn’t look like someone braced for the political fight of his life. He looked like he was done.)

WILLIAM J KELLY
— Kelly blasts Rauner for signing taxpayer-funded abortion bill  William J. Kelly, Bruce Rauner’s only GOP opponent in the 2018 primary, has issued the following statement in response to the Governor’s signing of HB40 into law today: Bruce Rauner is a serial liar. He lied on the issue of illegal immigration and turned Illinois into a sanctuary state. He lied to Republicans on the 32% income tax increase. He lied to us again on life and, today, he broke his promise to veto HB40, which makes taxpayer-funded abortion law. For the sake of the people of Illinois and the Party, I am calling on Governor Rauner and the GOP leadership to resign immediately. Illinois citizens deserve better.

    — Lt. Governor Sanguinetti’s statement on Governor’s decision to sign HB 40  CHICAGO – The following statement can be attributed to Lt. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for a 15-year-old refugee who chose to have me and keep me. “I realize this bill is a political ploy to divide the people of Illinois. While we disagree on this issue, there remains much on which we agree – and that is what unites us as Republicans. We both agree on the need to make Illinois more competitive, we agree on the need to lift up the less fortunate and we agree on the need to crack down on corruption and wrongdoing. As I have stated several times in the past, as Attorney General, I will enforce all of the laws of the state.”

WASHINGTON POST
— Retirement wave – Eric Yoder  (DIERSEN: My Democrat superiors’ success in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old was a horrific waste. Who/what do you blame for my Democrat superiors’ success in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old?)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/09/26/qa-for-federal-workers-retirement-wave/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Question: Whatever happened to the “retirement wave?” Wasn’t that supposed to create a lot of vacancies for younger federal employees to move up? Answer: Predictions of a wave of federal employee retirements date back many years. This comes from the large population of baby boomer workers — almost all now in their mid-50s or older — becoming old enough to meet the needed combinations of age and years of service. Some of those combinations allow for retirement as early as 55 — and even earlier in law enforcement and certain other occupations. However, except for those jobs, there is no mandatory retirement in the government. Many employees continue working out of desire or need — 15 percent already are eligible to retire, and the average federal retirement age now is about 62, up by more than two years over the past 10 years. Just under 64,000 of the 2.1 million federal workers outside the self-funding U.S. Postal Service retired in the fiscal year ending last September. That was about average for the past 10 years and actually the lowest since 2010. If budgets get tight, agencies may try to cut their staff costs by offering early retirements. But that’s just another form of optional retirement.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Durkin hiring of former Rauner aide living with reporter raises conflict questions – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: As the Illinois Editor for GOPUSA since 2000, I have always fully disclosed my political activities. I have been a Republican Precinct Committeeman since 1999. I was the TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman 2005-2012, a Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member 2003-2011, the Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster 2008-2010 and 2000-2004, an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member 2003-2007, and an American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member 2001-2004. I served on the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee and I attended the 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 IRP State Conventions as a delegate.)
http://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511221641-durkin-hiring-of-former-rauner-aide-living-with-reporter-raises-conflict-questions
(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Minority Leader Jim Durkin’s (R-Western Springs) hiring of Michael Mahoney, a former aide to Gov. Bruce Rauner, has the potential to cause some conflict of interest problems for WTTW, the primary public broadcasting member station in Chicago. The news of Mahoney’s hiring was reported in a Sept. 17 story in Prairie State Wire. According to the real estate listing site BlockShopper, Mahoney lives with WTTW statehouse reporter Amanda Vinicky in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago. “Amanda adheres to our News Standards which require balance, fairness and disclosure,” Mary Field, the station’s executive producer of “Chicago Tonight,” wrote in an email in response to being asked how WTTW would maintain balance in its coverage of the General Assembly. “I believe her works speaks for itself in that regard.” The Prairie State Wire story said that the hiring of Mahoney was being pushed by one of the Springfield’s top lobbyists and deal makers, Nancy Kimme, and David Walsh, Durkin’s top aide. Mahoney, 31, would replace Andrew Freiheit, 46, of Wheaton, who worked for the Illinois House Republicans, including Durkin’s predecessors Lee Daniels and Tom Cross, for more than two decades. Sources said that the move was precipitated by staff changes in Rauner’s office, where Kimme once had unrivaled access to information on state contracts, hiring and legislation. That access has reportedly been shut down with the departure of aides close to her, among them former Chief of Staff Richard Goldberg, Campaign Manager Mike Zolnierowicz, Communications Director Lance Trover and Research Director Edward Murphy. “She (Kimme) needs a new way in,” a lobbyist familiar with the situation told Prairie State Wire. “Durkin and Walsh are looking to help.” Commenting on an earlier story about the appearance of conflicts of interests when reporters are in relationships with people they report on, Prof. Adam Penenberg of New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute — who garnered national attention in 1998 for unmasking serial fabricator Stephen Glass of the New Republic — said that many ethics codes in journalism warn of any appearance of a conflict of interest. “One good rule governing potential conflicts of interest is whether a reporter might pull his or her punches,” he said. “Write a critical story and your spouse could, potentially, suffer the consequences. She could even get fired and result in a significant loss of income.” The Associated Press, in its “News Values and Principles” for Reporters, states: “Editorial employees are expected to be scrupulous in avoiding any political activity, whether they cover politics regularly or not. Non-editorial employees must refrain from political activity unless they obtain approval from a manager.” It also urges discussing any potential conflicts with one’s manager. “And a supervisor must be informed when a spouse — or other members of an employee’s household — has any ongoing involvement in political causes, either professionally or personally,” it reads.)

You look up and see that huge billboard for someone’s latest film, and think, ‘What?! What’s that?! How did he get that? — Raoul enters AG race, apologizes for ‘Miss America’ comment – Bernard Schoenburg
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170920/raoul-enters-ag-race-apologizes-for-miss-america-comment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Sen. Kwame Raoul, D-Chicago, who says he will run for attorney general in 2018, on Wednesday apologized for how he referred to Republican candidate Erika Harold when discussing the office last week. “I’ve seen the reaction to the comment that I made, and I don’t blame anybody for being offended,” Raoul told The State Journal-Register. “If I read them without the full context of our full conversation, I would have the same reaction. … I take full responsibility for the bad characterization.” Raoul told the newspaper on Friday, after Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced she would not seek another term, that “I think Lisa would have acquitted herself well against Miss America. I don’t know what’s behind the attorney general’s decision … but I doubt seriously it was any fear of Erika Harold.” Harold, of Urbana, was the 2003 Miss America, and is also a graduate of Harvard Law School, and now practices law. The story yielded a statement from state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, calling Raoul’s statement “blatant and belittling sexism.” “As a cadet at West Point and a woman in the political arena, I have spent much of my career fighting the dismissive, condescending sexism Senator Raoul so brazenly exhibited in his attempt to frame Ms. Harold as ‘just a pretty face,’” Ives said. “I do apologize, first off to Erika Harold, because … I don’t think it’s a small accomplishment to be Miss America,” Raoul said Wednesday. “In addition, her academic credentials are exceptional.” He said the point he was making in the full conversation last week was that he didn’t think Madigan was scared out of the race. “I think my record and people who know me demonstrates that I’m not a sexist,” Raoul said. “But I do apologize, first off to Erika Harold and to anybody else who took my comments to be intended to be demeaning to Miss Harold.”)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— DISCUSSION: SHOULD REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES UPHOLD THE IL GOP PLATFORM? (DIERSEN: I served on the 2008 Illinois Republican Party (IRP) Platform and Resolutions Committee. Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. In Illinois, if you have not and/or if you are not going to defend and advance the IRP platform, you should not seek or hold any kind of government office or political office as a Republican. In Illinois, when Republican elected officials and/or party leaders fail or refuse to defend and advance the IRP platform, the IRP should not only work against them, the IRP should censure them or remove them from the office(s) that they hold. In Illinois, when Republican candidates fail or refuse to commit to defend and advance the IRP platform, the IRP should not only work against them, the IRP should have the power to remove them from the ballot.)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/09/should-republican-candidates-uphold-the-il-gop-platform-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Delegates representing the party’s rank and file at the 2016 Illinois Republican Convention resoundingly embraced the Platform Committee’s recommended planks. Last year’s most controversial plank was the party’s view on upholding traditional marriage. Observers counted nearly 85 percent of the delegates supporting one-man, one-woman marriage. A subsequent vote on the whole platform confirmed the delegates support for the platform. But since that time, there has been a growing discussion about just how important – or unimportant – a political party’s platform is. . .How important is the IL GOP’s party platform? Do you think candidates should hold to the planks if they are elected? Or is it merely a suggestion and irrelevant as a whole? Please comment either here on Illinois Review’s website or on Illinois Review’s Facebook page. Your ideas matter.)

— Taxpayers billed $1,092 for an official’s two-night stay at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club – Drew Harwell and Amy Brittain  (DIERSEN: Why aren’t taxpayers outraged that they have been paying me $50,856/year or $4,238/month or $139.33/day in today’s dollars for the last 20 years to not work? Why aren’t taxpayers outraged that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old thereby forcing the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) to pay me $50,856/year or $4,238/month or $139.33/day in today’s dollars for the last 20 years and for the rest of my life?  If I was still working for GAO, during the last 20 years, assuming no promotions/demotions, I would have paid $172,187 into the CSRS instead getting $1,017,120 from the CSRS in today’s dollars.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes side with my Democrat GAO superiors who also always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are Democrats or Democrat plants, Libertarians or Libertarian plants, Greens or Green plants, or RINOs. They promote patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, retaliation, and even worse things.)

Ever-increasingly they shout that you are immoral if you do not promote dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, race and gender based preference giving, age discrimination, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, booze, gambling, pot and other vices, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, surrender to Mexico and to all the other foreign countries, and even worse things.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/15/business/facebook-advertising-anti-semitism.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Google and Facebook, the world’s biggest sellers of online advertising, faced sharp criticism on Friday for allowing advertisers to direct ads to users who searched for or expressed an interest in racist sentiments and hate speech. In response to two separate news reports exposing the issues, both companies said they would change how their systems worked. The criticism began on Thursday after a report from ProPublica, a nonprofit news site, revealed that Facebook enabled advertisers to seek out self-described “Jew haters” and other anti-Semitic topics. The company responded by saying that it would restrict how advertisers targeted their audiences on the social network. On Friday, an article from BuzzFeed reported how Google allowed the sale of ads tied to racist and bigoted keywords, and automatically suggested more offensive terms as part of that process. By midday, Google said it would work harder to halt offensive ads. The incidents added to a growing awareness of the complicated — and powerful — automated advertising systems that have turned Facebook and Google into two of the world’s most valuable companies. The companies have learned how to maximize their ability to connect any size of advertiser to highly tailored groups of people who use their services every day, collecting billions of dollars in the process.)
