Everyone involved in government, in politics, in media, in etc. should be required to disclose the amounts and sources of their income.  I get a $50,856 Civil Service Retirement System pension and $2,028 Social Security. As everyone knows, your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes want to cut if not eliminate your income. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes are beyond furious that they cannot cut/eliminate my income. However, they are working very had to cut/eliminate federal COLAs.  In 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in eliminating my GS-13 Step 10 salary (currently $122,991/year) by forcing me to take their early retirement “offer.”  In 1980, they succeeded in forcing me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO. In 1969, my Democrat Post Office superiors succeeded eliminating my GS-4 Step 3 salary (currently $16.60/hour) by forcing me to resign.)

(FROM THE LETTER: A recent editorial lauds the scores of elected local officials for meeting with constituents who may, from time to time, be upset. Nothing to disagree with that. So without indicating party affiliation, the Democrat House Representative used as a courageous example of attending a town meeting had no clue whether he could be facing an angry group. Really? So is the Naperville Sun thinking that the militant anti-Trump “Indivisible” crowd could have been planning to take over the town meeting? Using this example of being brave and taking the heat is not comparable. “Indivisible” was organized just after the November election by five young, elite, progressive, energetic communications experts with experience crafted in the Obama administration. They unite with the one specific purpose of creating mayhem at town meetings. Surely by now you have perused their battle cry in the pamphlet “Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda,” 26 pages. It describes in detail how to organize, create the largest impression, enlist the aid of media, especially video to maximize the effect of their obstruction techniques. You know, similar to the obstruction techniques that elected and also paid Democratic congressional representatives use, boycotting legislative and committee meetings, engaging in sit-ins on the Senate floor, misinterpreting and misdirecting. Your editorial is your opinion, and it clearly lines up with this profound democratic militancy. Our representatives should have attended the meetings and taken the orchestrated abuse to collect their paychecks, if that is how you measure it. But nowhere do you suggest restraint on the part of the organizers’ zeal. Nowhere do you suggest that there is another side in this. And nowhere do you condemn the lockstep, hostile resistance displayed by the minority party.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since the election, ACLU staff have heard one question more than any other: what can I do to protect fundamental freedoms threatened by policies from Washington? Our collective answer largely has been the same – stay informed, stay connected to groups like the ACLU and stay active. People are paying attention and making their voices heard. We hear reports every week about events being planned and executed across the state. People have been gathering and protesting each week in Bloomington-Normal and Evanston, using their voices to affect change in Peoria and Springfield. We see the wave of activism spreading from Rockford to Carbondale, touching everywhere in between. It is critical to recall that many of the issues we are facing at the state and federal level also are playing out at the local level. And, because there are so many of these issues happening locally throughout the state, we rely on members and activists to get involved and stay vigilant. And, there is so much happening at the local level that deserves your attention. Many communities are considering resolutions or ordinances that designate the municipality as a “welcoming city.” Oak Park adopted one of the best such resolutions earlier this year. And, in the western part of Illinois, nearly 100 residents showed up at Galena’s City Council meeting just last week to support an effort to advance a welcoming city resolution. Perhaps this is something that you and others in your local community can initiate. Even if you never get to a successful local vote, it sparks discussion and debate about important and critical issues. Another local activity is to find out what role your municipal police force will play in immigration enforcement. Local matters here as well. Last month, at a League of Women’s Voters forum in Naperville, the community’s police chief made clear that his officers do not assist ICE in immigration enforcement actions. If your community does not have a current policy, they might feel compelled to adopt a non-participation program based on a group of residents raising the question. Local activity also is going to matter is in the area of protecting students who are transgender, and their ability to use the appropriate restroom and locker room – consistent with their gender identity. This will be a key issue in the school board elections in at least two suburban school districts – U46 and D211 – in the ballot set for Tuesday, April 4th. If you live in these school districts – or any other – find out what the candidates think about these issues; a few votes will decide local school board races. We all need to stay tuned to the policies coming from Washington and Springfield. Often, however, the most direct action we can take is on the local level. We must not miss that opportunity to speak out and be heard. There are many people in your community waiting to hear from you about these issues – keep speaking out!)

The Federal Employees Health Benefits, or FEHB, Program basically allows all of Washington’s elites to enroll in any plan they choose — at very favorable rates (which can be negotiated because of the vast size of the federal plan’s membership). So, if that plan is now the plan for all Americans, what about those who cannot afford to pay for coverage at all? Mike always said provisions must be enacted to assure that the poor will have subsidized coverage. And the near-poor and lower middle classes would receive supplemental aid on a sliding need-based scale. But the beauty of this plan is that it can be done without massively restructuring the entire health sector economy. So that’s where it merits bipartisan backing — yes, even here in the political hate-city of Washington. When the ACA was enacted, it required all legislative branch employees (including senators, representatives and their staffs) to purchase coverage through the ACA networks in their states or Washington, D.C. So your senators and reps can’t buy into FEHB anymore. But all executive and judicial branch employees still get their coverage through FEHB. And, as the U.S. Office of Personnel Management website proclaims: “Federal employees, retirees and their survivors enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.” That still sounds like a great place to start.)

In so doing it would hardly eliminate racial disadvantage, but then again neither has 50 years of affirmative action. What it would offer is a meaningful response to an extraordinary injustice, but a response that does not involve permanent discrimination. There is no clear or easy path to becoming a multiracial nation that isn’t divided politically by race. Congressman Randy Hultgren announced Friday afternoon that one of his staff members quit this week because she was worried about her safety at the office. The police chief in Campton Hills confirmed they have handled a few minor calls. There has been no violence at any of the town hall meetings held across the country, but the congressman says safety is the reason he won’t hold town hall meetings. Republicans have faced protests at home, including Hultgren. He has decided for now to meet with constituents only in small groups, not town halls. “They get frustrated having individual time with me, or a small group meeting with me. They want to have something that is more theatrical. I just don’t know if that is beneficial right now,” he said. The same is true about members of Congress. You can avoid your constituents for some period of time, but ultimately they get the last word in the election,” Durbin said. Voters have criticized Republican lawmakers for shirking their duty to their constituents and continue to push for town hall meetings. Experts said things will only get worse for lawmakers because soon they will start voting on laws, and voters will follow how their representatives are voting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A specter haunts Washington, D.C.: federal workers, accustomed to job security, may actually be reduced in status to the level of private-sector peasants, who must live with the possibility of being laid off due to workforce reductions.  The Washington Post, in many ways the trade paper of the government industry, shares the anxiety of its readership: “Federal workers are growing increasingly anxious at the prospect of massive budget cuts President Trump proposed this week that would pave the way for increased military spending. Employees who list endangered species, collect taxes and distribute aid to foreign countries are fearing for their livelihoods as they sift through rumors and wait to see whether their offices will be targeted for steep reductions.”  Those of us who work in the private sector have never had the job security of a federal employee.  And few of us have the retirement benefits they enjoy, so we have the constant issue of providing for ourselves beyond our working years.  Frankly, it is a lot of stress, and I find that in my case, at least, it provides quite a lot of motivation for hard work.  After all, I have no rich Uncle Sam to rely on to keep money coming in to pay for the groceries, much less fund an extended vacation called “retirement.” Ordinarily, in the rare case of a government agency reducing its workforce, attrition is relied upon.  Deaths and retirements (and hardly ever firing for cause) automatically reduce the number of working bodies in a large organization.  If you don’t bring in replacements, the workforce declines in number.)
