(FROM THE ARTICLE: Three years ago, Chicago spent nearly $2 million — and $1.7 million more in legal fees — to compensate dozens of women denied firefighter jobs because of a discriminatory test of upper body strength that City Hall has now scrapped. Now, a dozen women who wanted desperately to become paramedics are accusing the Chicago Fire Department of devising two new physical agility tests that are equally biased against women. One test requires candidates to go up six flights of stairs with a 250-pound dummy within eight minutes. The other requires candidates to step onto and off of an 18-inch-high box to the beat of a metronome for two minutes without missing a beat while holding 25-pound weights in each hand. The lawsuit filed Friday in federal court alleges that the two tests were “invented to eliminate women” in a Chicago Fire Department where “discrimination against women is stubborn and purposeful.” The women are seeking back pay and other measures to compensate for the discrimination they have suffered. Shannon Markey said no amount of compensation could make her whole for the dream shattered by the city’s decision to fire her on the day before she was scheduled to graduate from the fire academy.)

Republican Linda Pasetti-Olson of Montgomery or Democrat Barbara Hernandez will fill a spot occupied by Maria Vazquez, who did not seek re-election. She served the remaining term of her late husband, Jesse. Neither candidate has held elected political office, other than precinct committeeman. Pasetti-Olson, 69, has made “life experience” a campaign issue. Hernandez, of Aurora, is 24. “I have the life experience to make the best decisions about how your tax dollars are being spent. This position will be my focus, and it won’t be competing with a social life, or a different career,” Pasetti-Olson wrote in a letter she posted on her campaign’s Facebook page. When she tells voters Hernandez’s age, they say, “She is way too young to be doing a job like this,” Pasetti-Olson said in an interview. Hernandez embraces her relative youth. “To my advantage would be that I am young,” she said, and that she has “fresh ideas” and the time and energy to interact with constituents. Hernandez cited the number of organizations and community events with which she has been involved. “What was she doing when she was 23?” Buying a house, paying taxes, raising children and working, Pasetti-Olson replied. Hernandez said she lives with her parents and does not pay rent but contributes money to household expenses. She works for state Rep. Linda Chapa La Via, and for the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. She cited several reasons, including paying college loans and not being ready to purchase property, for her decision. “I honestly think it is a cultural thing as well,” Hernandez said. “As Latinos, we tend to stay with family.” “I don’t feel like I’m too old” to serve effectively on the board, Pasetti-Olson said. She said she has been walking door-to-door to meet voters. Pasetti-Olson supports county board Chairman Chris Lauzen, including his effort to keep the county’s property tax levy frozen. Hernandez thinks the county should increase the levy, at least enough to account for growth due to new properties. Hernandez said she would support requests from the sheriff’s and state’s attorney’s office for more staffing and other resources. But where would money come from? She said the county should pursue getting more money from the state and federal government. “I feel like several state representatives have been able to bring back (money) for their regular (legislative) district, but they haven’t (specifically) looked into Kane County,” Hernandez said. She said she has developed connections in state and local government, working on constituent services for Chapa La Via, that would be useful. Pasetti-Olson does not support increasing staffing and said Kane County should study neighboring DuPage County for ways to reduce it. Pasetti-Olson cited traffic congestion in the district as one issue she is concerned about, specifically the intersection of Orchard Road and Route 30, and along Montgomery Road. She knows Aurora, the Illinois Department of Transportation and Kane County have long-term solutions in mind, but she wants quicker short-term fixes, such as installing more signals on Montgomery.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A majority of both Republicans and Democrats say the 2016 election is a significant source of stress for them right now, according to a recent American Psychological Association poll. They should probably log off Facebook and Twitter. A new survey from the Pew Research Center suggests — in a result that will surprise precisely zero political reporters who tweet — that people don’t think social media are a particularly great form of political discourse. Full 59 percent of social media users say interacting with people they disagree with is more “stressful and frustrating,” while 35 percent say it’s more “interesting and informative.” And by an even more lopsided 64-29 margin, they say they actually find they have less in common with people they disagree rather than say they find more in common. These frustrations are — wait for it — bipartisan. Many more social media users also say the discussions there are less respectful, less civil and less policy-focused than say they are more respectful, civil and policy-focused. And about half (49 percent) say that they are angrier than other forums, while just 6 percent say they’re less angry. It’s not hard to look at these numbers and conclude that social media are playing a part when it comes to our increasing polarization in the United States. The numbers don’t prove it directly, but it does seem that many Americans find talking politics on Facebook and Twitter, at least, to be an experience that leaves them with less regard for the other side. What’s interesting about social media is that it actually exposes people to those alternate views in a way their personal lives may not. Just 23 percent of Facebook users and 17 percent of Twitter users say they mostly follow people with similar political views to their own. That might be more they can say for their personal lives, in which their friends and neighbors are increasingly likely to be like-minded, thanks to something political scientists call “sorting.” But that doesn’t mean people are going to like what those they disagree with are saying. In fact, if nothing else, this survey suggests it might be one of the worst ways to have a reasoned political discussion. And yet, it’s probably one of the few forms of real political dialogue many people are having.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: HUNTSVILLE, Ala.  An Alabama A&M University student decided to turn his on-campus dorm room into the headquarters of his donation-based food pantry.  “I noticed that there were some students that said they were going to bed hungry,” said Justin Franks. “So, I thought about it and said, ‘What can I give back to my community?'” Franks said he started the pantry on just $45. “I started with pretty much just noodles and Capri Suns and I had a few household products like tissue and water.” It’s now packed with items such as fruit juices, coups, canned food items, chips and instant noodles. Franks posted his venture on Facebook, and the story has since been shared hundreds of times. “I didn’t think it would get shared that much, but people really cared about our students and Alabama A&M University.” So far, Franks has helped nearly 100 students. Those in need are able to get up to three items twice a week. “To me, it just makes me feel like I’m blessing someone,” he said. “I’m a religious person and I feel like I can bless a student. Some nights, students will be like ‘Man, I really appreciate this because I didn’t have anything to eat.'”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If GOP U.S. Sen. MARK KIRK, R-Ill., wasn’t always looking at the camera in the televised Springfield debate with U.S. Rep. TAMMY DUCKWORTH last week, well, there is an explanation. Due to his 2012 stroke, spokeswoman ELENI DEMERTZIS said, Kirk has lost complete vision in his left eye. At Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois Springfield, Kirk and Duckworth were at a table in the middle of the stage, and questioners, including myself, were at a table on stage to their left. Kirk often was looking in our direction, but had to turn far enough to use his right eye to do so. The moment of the debate that got the most attention was when Duckworth talked about her family’s military history dating back to the Revolutionary War, and Kirk said, “I’d forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to fight for George Washington.” After a bit of silence, and given the chance to respond, Duckworth said that it was her father’s side of the family whose service went back to the American revolution. I later asked for some family details, and MATT McGRATH, spokesman for Duckworth, said Duckworth’s father, FRANK, was American, and served in both the Marine Corps and Army. He worked in international development and met Duckworth’s mother, LAMAI, who is Thai of Chinese descent, in Thailand. Duckworth was born in Bangkok. Her father died in 2005, and her mother became a U.S. citizen in 1993, and lives with Duckworth, her husband BRYAN and their young daughter, in Hoffman Estates. Kirk apologized for his debate comment about Duckworth’s family, tweeting: “Sincere apologies to an American hero, Tammy Duckworth, and gratitude for her family’s service.” Duckworth responded on Twitter: “Thanks, Sen. Kirk. Let’s honor my family’s service — and your own — by sticking to the issues for the final week. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The United States may no longer be a white, Christian country. Based on research from Robert P. Jones, author of “The End of White Christian America,” The Atlantic published a video that shows how there’s been a decline in Americans who identify as white Christians in the last decade. His research shows that while 67 percent of Americans 65 years old or older identify as white Christians, only about 29 percent of people 18 to 29 feel the same. More so, Jones’ research shows that about 1 in 4 Americans today identify as religiously unaffiliated, a significant jump from the 1 in 10 who felt the same in the ’90s. According to Jones, Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential run demonstrates how the lack of Christians have affected our nation. Though Romney had a significant amount of white evangelicals voting for him, it wasn’t enough to put him over the top so he could win the presidency. Jones said it was because there had been a decline over the years in that religious group who would have voted for him. But, the author pontificates that if Romney ran in 2004, there would have been enough white Christians in the country that could have secured him the White House. This trend has created something of a backlash, as Americans struggle to figure out their identity. Is America a Christian nation as we’ve often thought, or is it a country defined by its diversity? “People fight like that when they are losing a sense of place, a sense of belonging, and a sense of the country that they understand and love,” Jones said. “How do they re-engage in public life when they can’t be the majority?”)

Hillary’s announcement to raise taxes on the rich will cripple business expansion, a job creator, and stifle GDP growth. Trump is the last line of defense against a continuation of Obama’s failed policies through a Hillary administration. Hillary’s Supreme Court appointees would render the Second Amendment (gun rights) meaningless and imperil religious liberty. He suggests that Farney violated an Illinois Public Act by falsely stating his chief deputy auditor was a certified accountant. Farney called these allegations false and said his chief deputy auditor is highly qualified. “I really find it disappointing and disturbing that my opponent is dragging her good name through the mud,” said Farney. “I find it appalling that he would expose one of his employees to professional risk, she is under the discipline of the profession we share, he’s not an accountant and shows no such risk,” explains Danos. Of the roughly $2 million that federal workers from 14 agencies spent on presidential politics by the end of September, about $1.9 million, or 95 percent, went to the Democratic nominee’s campaign, according to an analysis by The Hill. Employees at all the agencies analyzed, without exception, are sending their campaign contributions overwhelmingly to Clinton over her Republican counterpart. Several agencies, such as the State Department, which Clinton once led, saw more than 99 percent of contributions going to Clinton. Employees of the Department of Justice, which investigated Clinton’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of State, gave Clinton 97 percent of their donations. Trump received $8,756 from DOJ employees compared with $286,797 for Clinton. From IRS employees, Clinton received 94 percent of donations. Federal government employees overwhelmingly backed Clinton’s presidential campaign no matter which agency The Hill analyzed using Federal Election Commission data covering donors giving more than $200. Trump campaign spokesman Jason Miller said these donation patterns are more evidence of the “rigged system” favoring establishment candidates like Clinton over outsiders like Trump. The Trump campaign has been citing lopsided media donations to Clinton — though there’s no evidence they’re coming from reporters covering Trump — as further evidence that the game is fixed. But David Schultz, a Hamline University Professor of Political Science, said government employees have historically favored Democratic candidates over Republicans both in their voting habits and political contributions made in their personal time. Under the Hatch Act, federal government employees are banned from engaging in political activities, including making campaign contributions, during work hours. “Government employees are, on balance, more moderate or more liberal as opposed to the general population,” Schultz said. “Not across the board, but in general.” Government employees are “more likely to believe in government as opposed to, let’s say, a privatization program,” he added, “programs that we would view as hostile to government.” Republicans typically campaign on promises to slash government payrolls, which helps explain why recent GOP presidential candidates have received the smaller share of donations from government workers. Yet while Republicans usually do worse than Democrats, Trump appears to be doing especially poorly in fundraising from government employees. The 2012 GOP presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, received 14 percent of donations from the same group of agencies surveyed for Trump. Trump received just 5 percent. Romney got close to $300,000 more from these same departments’ employees than Trump has four years later. Comparisons to previous presidential candidates are of limited value, since they took public funding for their general election campaigns. Trump might have had a chance to do better than Romney. He discarded much of Republican orthodoxy during his primary campaign, which could have led some federal employees to believe that he’d be more amenable to big government. He vowed, for example, to leave massive social welfare programs virtually untouched. But Trump also constantly attacked federal institutions. During his primary campaign, he described the federal government as a corrupt, bloated body run by “very, very, stupid people.” Trump vowed “tremendous cutting” of the government in an interview with The Wall Street Journal in January and singled out the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency as agencies he’d slash dramatically if not outright eliminate. Agency employees have likely taken note of Trump’s hostile rhetoric. In the Department of Education’s case, that included Trump’s pledges to hand over control to the states and to fight tooth and nail against Common Core standards. From Department of Education employees this cycle, Trump received three donations totaling $220. Clinton received 724 donations for more than $74,000. In all, she received 99.7 percent of donations from employees of the department. Donations from the State Department, which Clinton ran from 2009 to 2013, were even more slanted in her favor. State Department employees gave Trump 39 donations, for $4,652. Over the same time period, they gave their former boss 2,518 donations, for $425,525. Throughout his campaign, Trump has portrayed himself as a strongman who would toughen up America’s defenses — both militarily and at the border — and who would take care of veterans. It’s probably no coincidence, therefore, that Trump performed best in donations among employees of three agencies: Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs. But even employees of these more Trump-friendly agencies have overwhelmingly contributed to Clinton’s campaign. From Defense employees, Trump received 341 donations for $43,575. Clinton got 2,392 donations for $225,560, giving her 84 percent of the money. From Homeland Security employees, Clinton got 90 percent of the donations, and from Veterans Affairs she took 88 percent. Romney performed significantly better than Trump with employees at all three agencies, receiving, for example, $98,153 from Defense employees, which amounted 21 percent of donations. During the Republican primaries, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said, “Let’s create a little bit of a recession in Washington, D.C., so that we can have economic prosperity outside of Washington.” Fear of such plans might be the truest explanation of these uniformly lopsided donations. Schultz, the Hamline professor, said “self-preservation”— particularly for workers engaged in public sector unions — probably motivates their political giving. “This means support for their jobs,” he said. “Clinton, for the most part, is going to be probably a continuation of more or less what Obama is.” Federal government employees, he said, are likely “more willing to give to somebody who would be more predictable in terms of supporting their livelihood, their jobs, as opposed to somebody who might be less predictable.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It ain’t easy being a Chicago political boss these days. Just ask Joe Berrios, the supposed leader of the party that dominates Cook County. Berrios expected each committeeman from Chicago’s 50 wards and the 30 suburban Cook townships to “buy a table” at the county Democratic Party fundraiser on Oct. 13. Some have not done their share, prompting a terse letter from county party headquarters. In an email obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times, a top Berrios aide comes off sounding more like the Nicor collections department than a political boss’ enforcer. “You are receiving this notice because you did not support our 10/13 fundraiser by purchasing any tickets,” wrote Jacob Kaplan, the county Democrats’ executive director. “The Chairman asked all committeemen to support the event by purchasing 10 tickets (at $200 each).” I talked to one committeeman who’s openly bucking Boss Berrios and three others who said they were withholding payment to the party but didn’t want to be publicly identified. Berrios is threatening to out the scofflaws at Friday’s meeting of party brass at the Erie Cafe, a Near North Side restaurant where the chairman’s own political funds have dropped more than $70,000 in the last few years. Kaplan warned the committeemen: “A report on the October fundraiser will be produced at our committeemen pre-election meeting next Friday (10/28) at Erie Cafe. Several committeemen have requested a list of committeemen who have not supported the party’s October fundraiser. If you do not want to be on this list, please reply and let us know how many tickets you will be sending a check into the party for.” Kaplan would not name the committeemen who have not complied with the boss’ fundraising request. Nor would he tell me which of the nice committeemen requested a list of the naughty. “There’s about 15 or so holdouts,” Kaplan said Tuesday. “Some [contributions] may come in by Friday.” Kaplan acknowledged that “it’s not like the old days,” when a Cook County Democratic boss such as Dick Daley could growl an order and every committeeman would heel instantly. “We just ask everybody to contribute something they can afford, even if it’s just one ticket, to share the burden of keeping the party going,” Kaplan said. Many committeemen already paid their share, or even gave much more than what was sought, according to campaign-finance reports. The party reported getting $10,000 from two campaign funds controlled by 14th Ward boss Ed Burke, while John Daley’s 11th Ward Democrats contributed $2,000. In June, the county party organization got $25,000 from Toni Preckwinkle, the County Board president who’s also 4th Ward committeeman and an executive vice chairman of the county Democrats. But 1st Ward Ald. and Committeeman Proco Joe Moreno says he won’t give a dime. He noted that Berrios, Kaplan and other county party officials helped a candidate who tried to unseat him in the committeeman’s race earlier this year. In 2014, Moreno supported a successful challenger against Berrios’ daughter Toni, who had been a state representative. “I have a strong, powerful, progressive ward organization,” Moreno said. “I don’t need to give money to his a– to work against me.” Moreno said he’s considering running against Berrios for the chairman’s day job as county assessor. Another committeeman, who asked not to be identified, said of Berrios, “Why give him money? I don’t understand. He hasn’t done anything for me.” Berrios may manage to placate them. But the only person he really must be sure to please is the true boss — the state party chairman and Illinois House speaker, Mike Madigan. If the fundraising request had come from Madigan, there’s little doubt all 80 committeemen would pull out their checkbooks as quickly as the Erie Cafe’s waiters hustle to serve Berrios.)

Women are gradually advancing to the highest levels of government, where they now represent 33.7 percent of the leaders known as senior executives. These are the mostly career managers who carry out the mandate of the White House, occupying key roles just below top presidential appointees. In the civilian world, they’re the generals and admirals who run their agencies day-to-day. Women and men have not reached parity in the top ranks of government. But among the 7,187 career senior executives, they’ve reached pay parity, with women getting a slight edge. Their $175,451 average salary is $479 more than men’s.  Women have climbed further than their male counterparts at private companies, where just 16 percent of executives are women, according to an analysis by McKinsey & Company, working with the Partnership for Public Service. The Government Accountability Office, a little-known agency that acts as the government’s fiscal watchdog, has quietly cultivated a culture that has helped women thrive. The result? Women make up 41 percent of the senior executives there, substantially above the government-wide average. The GAO has what’s best described as an unglamorous mission: It audits government programs for Congress to ensure that taxpayers get the most efficient and accountable spending for their money. The audits released this month include titles such as “Agencies Have Sound Procedures for Managing Exchanges but Could Improve Inventory Monitoring” (on nuclear material) and “Guidance Needed for Completing Required Impact Assessments Prior to Presidential Drawdowns” (on security assistance). Arcane as the work is, it gets results: Federal agencies act on about 80 percent of the GAO’s recommendations to improve their operations, even if some guidance takes years to be implemented. Yet the GAO is not just a good place to work (it consistently ranks near the top among midsize agencies in the Best Places to Work in the Federal Government annual rankings) but a good place to work for women. Of the agency’s 121 senior executives, 50 are women, including the general counsel and chief operating officer. “With the wide variety of work we’re doing, you want to have a representative workforce,” Eugene Dodaro, the comptroller general of the United States and GAO head, said in an interview. Government agencies have long prided themselves on helping their employees balance their work and personal lives. The GAO’s approach is more serious than most: day care on site at the Washington headquarters, a student loan repayment program, a generous telework policy — 65 percent of the staff worked from home one day or more per pay period last year — and a flexible relocation policy. When she was hired 26 years ago as an entry-level analyst right out of graduate school, Orice Williams Brown told herself she would do this for a few years until the financial markets, still reeling from a crash, recovered. Her first assignment was to investigate why the Internal Revenue Service was not using interest on municipal bonds that local governments had returned to the federal government. “I was totally hooked,” she recalled. She was promoted to senior executive in 2005, in charge of the team that audits financial markets and community investment. Five years ago, she was made a managing director. “The work is extremely appealing,” Williams Brown, 50, said. “It’s a family-friendly culture. I’ve seen people advance regardless of where they are in their personal life. I’ve seen people promoted who are out on maternity leave.” She said that by having employees work in teams with experts from different disciplines, the GAO puts a premium on collaborative skills and coming to collective decisions. “That’s one of the things women are really socialized to do.” For Susan Poling, the GAO’s stable leadership is a big factor in why she and other women thrive. The agency is not run by a political appointee whose face changes every four years, but by a nonpartisan civil servant who serves a 15-year term. Like many lawyers, Poling found that government gives women opportunities to advance without working the 70-and 80-hour weeks that are essential to making partner at corporate firms. “One of the things I bring is that I’ve been a working mother, and I have other men and women on my staff who are working parents,” she said. When she was hired to the GAO in 1990 from the Department of Education, she worked part time so she could spend more time with her young son. “But they didn’t shunt me over and not give me great things to do,” she said. Today, as a full-time senior executive, Poling supervises 156 lawyers. And at 68, she has no plans to retire anytime soon. “I’m still enjoying myself.”)

On weekends, he’s making closing arguments to voters. “You just have to be able to speak to them and present yourself,” McCluskey said. “You’d be surprised … some people just take your materials, a lot of people get engaged.” In fact, McCluskey enjoys the campaign trail so much, “I wish I’d done this at a younger age,” he said.)

What would your superiors say that they did to fight “economic inequality?”  My Democrat GAO superiors would stress that they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors would stress that they did not promote me beyond GS-12, that they disallowed my education deductions, and that they disallowed my partial day per diem claims.  My Democrat Post Office superiors would stress that they forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests.  My aforesaid Democrat superiors would stress that the aforesaid adverse actions that they took against me directly benefited their employees who were poor, and especially their poor employees who were Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran.)
