(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois is a different story. I’ve spent most of my adult life here; for more than 25 years I’ve called Chicagoland home. I started a business and raised my family here. But the more I’ve watched the city of Chicago and the state flail about in the last few years, unable to protect its citizens and unwilling to put its fiscal house in order, the more convinced I’ve become that maybe it’s time for Illinois to leave the Union – as a favor to the rest of America. I’m joking about “ILexit,” but less than you might think. In the city of Chicago, the carnage – and, yes, I use that Trumpian phrase on purpose – continues unabated.  Six people were shot dead on Wednesday, including a pregnant woman in her 20s, making it the deadliest single day in the city since eight people were killed on Christmas.  So far this year, homicides are outpacing last year’s obscene total of 762, a 55 percent increase from 2015 and the highest number of murders the city has seen since 1996. Decades of mismanagement, lavish spending programs, and kowtowing to public employee unions have left the city’s finances in shambles. Taxes and fees in the city are skyrocketing, while its bond status has been reduced to junk. Despite all this, voters have continued to reward just one party with power. Democrats have run the city of Chicago since before Franklin Roosevelt was president. Outside of Chicago, things are no better, even if they’re a bit more bipartisan. Of Illinois’ last four governors, two (Republican George Ryan and Democrat Rod Blagojevich) went to prison. (Two others, Otto Kerner and Dan Walker, both Democrats, also spent time in the slammer.))

Several of the political appointees in the Trump administration are hostile to the missions of the departments and agencies they now lead. On top of that, the president’s hiring freeze will create imbalances in the federal workforce, requiring current employees to fill in random gaps. Many civil servants will simply quit in disgust. I hope they don’t. When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, I was an attorney in the Seattle office of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. In his first year in office, President Ronald Reagan proceeded to remake our small agency, bringing in new leadership that openly disdained the civil-rights community and its agenda. Some of us joked bitterly that we were becoming the U.S. Commission against Civil Rights. Funding for the commission was drastically reduced. Discouraged, much of the staff, myself included, found employment elsewhere. Abandoning ship in such circumstances is understandable, but in retrospect I think a mistake. When those civil servants with the strongest commitment to their agency’s mission leave, who remains? Answer: Those less committed and less likely to confront their political masters. Sure, the most earnest among those who quit the government will carry on their cause from the outside. I suspect that the number of paid Republican political operatives who will be paid by New Trier High School to grace the Seminar Day can be counted on zero fingers, and I suspect, further, that the disparity is no accident. Odd that Ms. Koerner doesn’t swell with gleeful anticipation of the visits by others among the Seminar Day’s speakers, such as Monica Trinidad (who organizes boycotts of ballet companies featuring Jewish artists because she doesn’t want to “dance with Israeli apartheid”); and the “poet” whose nom de plume is “John the Author” and whose oeuvre includes “poetry” such as the following stirring anthem to racial tolerance and what education can accomplish, an exhortation that no doubt embodies what Ms. Koerner imagines to be the school’s lofty goals to “inspire, commit, and serve”: “Not graduate from back, Give back, nigga, Tell them get back, nigga”.”  Morris comment on the “Mandatory seminar” letter: “Mr. Sloane of Glendale Heights may or may not have learned to read in the feeder schools that serve the upscale New Trier Township High School, but it is puzzling that he wonders “if the high school is focusing on the fight for equal rights in the 1950s and 1960s” when the title of the Seminar Day program is “Understanding Today’s Struggle for Racial Civil Rights” (emphasis added).  The word “Today’s” is probably a dead giveaway that the aim of the program is not a retrospective on the history of half a century and more ago.  Another dead giveaway of the aim of the program is the insertion of the word “Racial” which, of course, undermines the fundamental American proposition that “rights”, civil and otherwise, belong to individuals and not to races.)

Throw the repeal of large chunks of the ACA and the end of federal government funds for Planned Parenthood into the mix, and a bad situation will only get worse, say some experts. “It’s a perfect storm that would allow more people to become infected” as education that could help prevent the spread of STDs falters and the places where people can go to be tested dwindle, says John Steever, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics and a member of the faculty at the Adolescent Health Center of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. The cost of STDs is enormous for those infected but also for society as a whole. The direct cost of treating STDs is almost $16 billion per year, according to the CDC. That is more than twice the CDC’s annual budget. The cost of STD care “is the magnitude of a natural disaster every year,” says Supriya Mehta, an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health. The CDC estimates that, at any given time, more than 100 million Americans have an STD. Roughly 20 million new cases occur each year, with half of those affecting young people between the ages of 15 and 24. In addition, one quarter of sexually active adolescent females have an STD. Blacks and men who have sex with men also tend to have a higher prevalence of STDs.)
