(FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: In December of 2020, outgoing Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider announced a transition plan in which there would be an open and transparent process for the selection of a new chairman. Today, after lengthy interviews with the three finalists, spirited discussion, and a weighted vote amongst the ILGOP State Central Committee, Don Tracy of Springfield has been chosen as the next chairman of the Illinois Republican Party and has unanimous support from the committee. Tim Schneider immediately offered his resignation and Don Tracy accepted the role of chairman to fill the remaining two years of Schneider’s term. Chairman Don Tracy has released the following statement in response to his selection: “I am truly honored and excited to have been chosen by the State Central Committee to serve as Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party. I want to thank each member for the opportunity to serve. I promise to lead with honesty, integrity, and the vigor we need to turn Illinois around. I also want to thank the other two finalists – Mark Shaw and Scott Gryder – for their tireless work on behalf of the Republican Party. I look forward to working with them to elect more Republicans. I ran for this position because I love Illinois – it’s my home – and I believe the ILGOP can be a tremendous catalyst for change in this state. The upcoming election cycle can be monumental if we seize on the tremendous opportunities before us. We have a weakened Governor who can be defeated; we have a US Senate seat to win; we are well-positioned to win back Congressional seats; we can claw back seats in the state legislature if we recruit the right candidates; and lastly, we have an historic opportunity to elect a fourth Republican to the state Supreme Court for the first time ever. The only way we can capitalize on these opportunities in 2022 is if we unite the party. My number one priority is to give every Republican a seat at the table and give every Republican a voice. Regardless of our differences, Republicans are the only hope for turning Illinois around and keeping it from becoming a depopulated, over-taxed, and anti-police financial basket case. There’s too much at stake in 2022 to be anything less than a united band of brothers and sisters in the fight to save Illinois. So, whatever your political leanings, wherever you live – if you want to fight corruption, restore fiscal sanity, grow our economy, and stand for law and order – you’re on our team. It’s time to suit up, work together, and bring home some wins for the people of Illinois.” Don Tracy is a successful businessman and lawyer from Springfield, Illinois. Born and raised in rural Mt. Sterling (Brown County, Illinois), he is the oldest of twelve children. Don and his eleven siblings own the thriving family business, Dot Foods, Inc., a national redistributor of food and related products, and other national businesses. Headquartered in Mt. Sterling (population: 2,025), Dot Foods, Inc. was founded in 1960 by Don’s father and currently employs 6,000 people across the United States and Canada. Don is the first chairman of the Illinois Republican Party from outside Chicago and the collar counties since 1988.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Members of the Illinois Republican Party on Saturday picked a former gaming board chief to be the next head of the state party. Don Tracy, a Springfield attorney who was appointed to lead the Illinois Gaming Board by former Gov. Bruce Rauner, won the backing of members of the state GOP’s central committee. Tracy was not immediately available for comment. In a statement earlier this week, Tracy said the “state is in danger” of “becoming a depopulated, left wing, one party, over-taxed, and anti-police financial basket case. “Having been born in Illinois, and spent most of my life in Illinois, I am determined to help reverse Illinois’ decline,” he said. Tracy faced allegations in 2019 of making or directing several political contributions to Rauner in violation of state gambling laws. He labeled the report a “political hit job” and a “bunch of baloney.” The attorney beat out two other candidates vying to lead the party — Lake County Republican Chair Mark Shaw, who currently serves as state party co-chair and president of the Republican County Chairmen’s Association, and Kendall County Board Chair Scott Gryder. Former chair Tim Schneider announced in December he’d be stepping down from the position, which he called the “honor of a lifetime.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Republicans pick Springfield businessman as new party chairman – RICK PEARSON
https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-illinois-republican-party-gop-new-chairman-20210207-w2sbznaw4farxlonp2uy5btuzm-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Don Tracy, a former state Gaming Board chairman and unsuccessful 2010 lieutenant governor candidate, was picked by top Republicans on Saturday as the new Illinois GOP chairman. . .The election was based on the weighted votes of the 18-member Republican State Central Committee, which met in Bolingbrook. The vote was close, 52% for Tracy and 48% for Shaw, according to two sources, who asked not to be identified because the results were pledged by members to remain secret. The party then agreed to make the choice unanimous. “I promise to lead with honesty, integrity, and the vigor we need to turn Illinois around,” Tracy said in a statement after hours of candidate interviews and discussion. Contending the GOP has “tremendous opportunities” in 2022 in what is now a one-party Democratic state, Tracy emphasized the need for unity. . .The pick of Tracy was viewed as an establishment conservative GOP choice over Shaw, a sometimes controversial figure who previously sought the chairmanship. Shaw orchestrated the December effort among hard-liners that led former Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider to agree to step down as party leader with more than a year left in his term. Schneider was Rauner’s hand-picked choice for GOP chair in May 2014. . .Tracy has donated more than $400,000 to candidates and causes since 1999, state campaign finance records show, primarily to himself and his sister-in-law, but also to local GOP causes in candidates in Springfield. He also gave $25,000 to the successful effort to defeat Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s effort to have voters approve a graduated-rate income tax amendment to the state constitution on Nov. 3. Tracy also has given more than $10,000 over the years to Family PAC, a socially conservative group that has fought abortion and gay rights in Springfield, state records show. Tracy has long opposed abortion rights and has touted his support of gun-owner rights.)
— Illinois GOP says Rep. Adam Kinzinger and other Republicans who voted to impeach Trump ‘created widespread division and anger’ in the party – RICK PEARSON
https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-adam-kinzinger-illinois-republicans-20210205-7cwxhciinzcmvjyaue6ohenc2y-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The state party’s rebuke of Kinzinger falls short of actions taken by other state parties against their GOP congressional members who voted for impeachment. Some have issued a censure, a statement of strong disapproval but carrying no formal penalties, against those representatives. In Illinois, LaSalle County Republicans voted to censure Kinzinger, whose sprawling 16th Congressional District includes the county. Kinzinger spokeswoman Maura Gillespie said Kinzinger plans to speak early next week with GOP county chairmen and committee members in his district “to hear their concerns and share with them where he stands on things.” “Congressman Kinzinger looks forward to building on that solid foundation as they all work together to navigate these next four years under a Democrat majority and through the course of this pandemic, keeping the focus on serving the community and the shared interests of the party,” she said. Kinzinger’s actions had been expected to become a subject of discussion on Saturday when top state Republicans convened in Bolingbrook and picked former Illinois Gaming Board Chairman Don Tracy of Springfield as a replacement for Chairman Tim Schneider. But the GOP statement made it clear that it wanted the meeting to focus on the future and not on Kinzinger.)

https://capitolfax.com/2021/02/06/don-tracy-chosen-as-new-ilgop-chair/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I don’t have a press release from the ILGOP, but I do have one from the IDCCA… Following the Illinois Republican Party electing Raunerite Don Tracy as their new Party Chair, President Kristina Zahorik of the Illinois Democratic County Chairs Association (IDCCA) released the following statement: “It is rich that the Illinois GOP appointed a new chair with a history of corrupt behavior. We repeatedly watch Illinois Republicans cry crocodile tears over political corruption, and today they proved they’re the Grand Old Party of hypocrisy with their appointment of Don Tracy.” The State of Illinois Office of Inspector General found that Don Tracy illegally made campaign contributions through his wife while serving on the Illinois Gaming Board. The report said Tracy “made loans and contributions either directly, or through his wife, to political committees” in violation of state law. Tracy was appointed to the Gaming Board by former Republican Governor Bruce Rauner in 2015. . .From Mary Morrissey, Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Illinois…“As the Republican Party struggles to take control of its party back from white supremacists and violent extremists, Illinois Republicans have chosen a leader whose ties to Donald Trump and Bruce Rauner promise a return to the failed policies of the past. The Illinois GOP has deemed Don Tracy, a Trump supporter who resigned as the Illinois Gaming Board chair after steering illegal contributions to former Governor Rauner’s campaign, as their best hope to carry their party into the future. It will be interesting to see if the Illinois Republican Party will continue to embrace questionable leadership, division and extremism or consider working with Democrats to find solutions that lift up workers and families across Illinois. We aren’t holding our breath.”)

February 2 Morning Edition

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— The Illinois Republican Party is at an inflection point that’s gone beyond the urban vs. rural debate. Now the state party, like its national counterpart, must decide whether it’s in lockstep with former President Donald Trump and his loyal supporters or head down a path that’s more inclusive. The direction it takes will be determined in large part on Saturday, when the state Republican Central Committee selects its next chairman. Current leader Tim Schneider is stepping down after five years in the position. A critical litmus test in replacing Schneider may be the candidates’ views of Rep. Adam Kinzinger and his vote to support Trump’s impeachment. Do they want to censure the 16th District congressman, as some Republicans have called for? Or do they agree to disagree with him, as Schneider has done. Mark Shaw, the Lake County Republican Party chairman who represents the more conservative arm of the party, has talked about censure with Republicans but told Playbook he hasn’t yet decided to take a public stand on the issue. “I have not taken a position yet on whether U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger should be admonished by the Republican Party for his actions and/or comments,” he said in a text. He would not elaborate on his thoughts about Kinzinger’s vote. Shaw is supported by former congressional candidate Jim Oberweis and grassroots conservatives, and he’s also taken heat from pro-Trumpers like Catalina Lauf, centrist state Sen. Sue Rezin, and others. Lauf and Rezin have taken issue with Shaw for endorsing Oberweis in the IL-14 GOP primary weeks before petitions were filed. That Shaw would engineer a campaign in a contested primary to favor a white man over a respected female state senator (Rezin) and a pro-Trump Latina (Lauf) has infuriated many Republicans across the state. Rezin wrote a letter to party leaders in November complaining about Shaw’s actions. And Lauf tweeted over the weekend, saying, “We need a leader who will listen to those on the ground, committed to grassroots, and who can actually lead the GOP in this State on a path forward.” The other candidates applying for state GOP chair say they don’t support Kinzinger’s impeachment vote but they also don’t back censure. “I strongly disagree with Congressman Kinzinger’s vote…but I also oppose an Illinois GOP censure of him,” former Illinois Gaming Board exec Don Tracy told Playbook. Tracy is a downstate Republican who has support from grassroots conservatives as well as centrists. He’s backed by Congressman Darin LaHood and Rodney Davis, state House Minority Leader Jim Durkin, and conservative voice John Tillman. Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder, who has the support of state Rep. Keith Wheeler, echoed Tracy, saying, “We as a party need to focus on what unifies us which is electing candidates that support our small businesses, fight for the middle class, promote transparency in government and fight corruption.” – SHIA KAPOS and MARIA CARRASCO

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Enough is enough,” Larry Smith, chairman of the LaSalle County Republican Central Committee, told Playbook after the rally. “He hasn’t talked to us for six years.” Smith said his Republican committee will vote Tuesday on whether to censure Kinzinger, and Smith suggested other GOP county committees could follow. So far, the state GOP has no plans to censure. But the party is in upheaval as Chairman Tim Schneider is stepping down and a new chairman is to be named Saturday. Up for the job are Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder, Lake County Republican Chairman Mark Shaw, and former Illinois Gaming Board exec and former lieutenant governor candidate Don Tracy of Springfield. Shaw favors full censure of Kinzinger. While Tracy and Gryder, who oppose Kinzinger’s impeachment vote, nonetheless reject censure.)

https://www.cleveland.com/open/2021/02/will-the-ohio-gop-move-on-from-trump-a-qa-with-chairman-jane-timken.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Normally, a political party would move on from a losing presidential candidate. Party leaders already have shown some subtle signs of doing so – the state GOP removed images of Trump from the front page of its website earlier this month, and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel last week told the Associated Press the party would remain neutral if Trump runs again in 2024. But Trump has claimed he only lost the election because of widespread fraud, a claim his own Justice Department, dozens of courts and senior Republican leaders have rebuked as unsupported or false. Last week, cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer interviewed Timken, whom Trump personally helped install as leader of the state GOP shortly after he was elected, to ask how the party might – or might not – move on from the former president heading into 2022. . .What is the next step for Republicans post-Trump? . . . Do you think he will remain involved with the Republican Party? Do you think he will follow through on his reported threat to start a third party? . . . What is the biggest thing the Ohio Republican Party needs to improve? . . . The former president attracted a lot of new voters to the Republican Party. Do you think they will remain engaged Republican voters? . . . What responsibility does the president or Republicans generally bear for the events at the Capitol? . . . https://townhall.com/columnists/laurahollis/2021/01/28/america-grows-sick-on-a-diet-of-propaganda-and-political-theater-n2583871
(FROM THE ARTICLE: First and foremost, of course, is the attempt by Democrats in Congress to impeach Trump for “inciting insurrection.” Most people won’t read the full text of Trump’s speech that day. It was vintage Trump, confrontational and full of braggadocio, but in it, he explicitly told his supporters to “peacefully and patriotically” make their voices heard. But no “insurrection” means no “incitement,” and that would mean no impeachment. The articles of impeachment are themselves a charade. As Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul stated on the Senate floor — and to which 44 other Republican senators agreed — the Constitution simply does not authorize Congress to take the action contemplated by an impeachment trial against a private citizen. Only a sitting president can be “removed,” and Donald Trump is no longer the president of the United States. Further, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that Chief Justice John Roberts will not preside over an impeachment trial in the Senate — another blow to those who claim that such a “trial” on the House’s single impeachment charge is legitimate. Finally, the 44 GOP senators who voted in favor of Paul’s procedural motion prove that the 50 Democratic senators will not get the additional 17 Republicans they need for a two-thirds majority to convict. So, the impeachment shtick isn’t about removing a man who is already gone, and it isn’t really about getting a conviction either. It’s more — and more extreme — political theater. If that’s not bad enough, the country is also struggling to recover from months of COVID lockdowns. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio described the impeachment charge as “stupid” and a waste of time. And it gets much worse. The target of the “insurrection” propaganda campaign is not so much Donald Trump as it is the 74 million-plus people who voted for him. Americans were stunned when Hillary Clinton referred to only half of Donald Trump’s supporters as a “basket of deplorables” in 2016. But Trump had millions more supporters in 2020, and now all of them are being demonized by Democrats and their mouthpieces in the media as threats, as “seditionists” and “white supremacists” who need to be “deprogrammed,” “reprogrammed,” imprisoned in “reeducation camps” or subjected to “Nuremburg trials.” These are not isolated remarks by fringe elements; they are comments made by “mainstream” Democratic voices: Washington Post correspondent Eugene Robinson, media darling Katie Couric, MSNBC anchor Don Lemon, actor Jon Cryer, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Comments on these articles and tweets — made by non-famous, left-leaning Americans — are even worse. This is beyond political difference. It is a sickness.)

— Biden’s Approval Rating Is Trump’s in Reverse Support from a slim majority might be all President Biden can expect — and maybe it’s all he needs. – Giovanni Russonello
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/01/us/politics/biden-approval-rating-trump.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Biden entered the White House last month with a broadly positive approval rating — but well shy of the two-thirds of Americans who expressed support for his former boss, Barack Obama, when he took office 12 years ago. In fact, Biden’s net approval rating is lower than that of any incoming president since the dawn of modern polling, except for his predecessor, Donald Trump. It’s just another clear sign that we’ve entered a new era of partisanship: Media fragmentation and the hard-line politics it has helped foster may make it impossible for any leader to become a true consensus figure. But it also bears noting that Biden’s approval rating is basically a reverse image of Trump’s. In addition to being loathed by Republicans and embraced by Democrats, he’s firmly in positive territory among independents — who had consistently disapproved of Trump’s performance. A Monmouth University poll out last week found that 54 percent of Americans gave Biden’s performance positive marks, including nine in 10 Democrats and a plurality of independents, who approved by a 17-percentage-point margin (22 percent hadn’t yet formed an opinion). But among Republicans, his numbers were upside down. Just 15 percent approved, and 70 percent disapproved.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s vote to impeach Donald Trump and criticism of Republican congressional colleagues who support the former president has highlighted a split in the state GOP as it gets set to decide on new leadership. The Republican State Central Committee will meet Feb. 6 to decide among three candidates to replace outgoing Chairman Tim Schneider. But some in the party want to use the forum to discuss Kinzinger and a possible reprimand for his anti-Trump statements, which increased in vitriol following the Nov. 3 election and the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters. “There’s a group that wants to talk about it and it’s not positive. There are those who want to censure him. There’s people wanting to know what the state party is going to do about it,” said former Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, who represents the 11th Congressional District near Kinzinger’s 16th District on the state GOP central committee. The schism in the state GOP mirrors what’s happening with Republicans nationally as the party struggles to move forward even as many of its voters continue to back Trump and believe the November election was stolen from him. On Sunday, Kinzinger doubled down on his position, announcing the formation of a “country first” movement and website attached to his Future First Leadership political action committee. He’s seeking like-minded supporters to “take back our party” and to “unplug the outrage machine, reject the politics of personality and cast aside the conspiracy theories and the rage.” “I think the Republican Party has lost its moral authority in a lot of areas. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to fight back to defend what we believe are our conservative principles. But when I ask people now, what is a conservative principle, how many people think that conservative principles are things like just build the wall and charge the Capitol and have an insurrection?” Kinzinger said on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” . . . But they also did not go unnoticed by state GOP leaders. Some have said they have received phone calls asking what the Illinois Republican Party was going to do about Kinzinger. The congressman was the subject of some discussion at a GOP State Central Committee meeting last weekend. “I think the party majority are kind of disappointed. I mean, the one thing I’ve heard most from Republicans over the years since Reagan is the old 11th Commandment,” Claar said of the former president’s admonishment to not speak ill of fellow Republicans. Claar accused Kinzinger of causing upheaval in the party to no clear end. “What is the point? Why are you elevating this thing into regional, if not national, prominence? What purpose are you serving here? You’re further pointing out the division in the party,” Claar said. Kinzinger has denied that he is attempting to position himself for a run for U.S. Senate or governor in 2022, though he has not ruled out a run for higher office. In a statewide race, his Trump criticism would likely be held against him in Downstate Illinois, which has grown more strongly conservative and ardently supported the former president in the past two elections. His stance could, however, help him among more moderate independents and Republicans in Chicago’s suburbs. Kinzinger recently told CNN that he believes with Trump gone, Republican leaders face a reckoning of where the GOP should go next — either aligning themselves with the former president or moving beyond him. “I think in six months it’s not going to be necessarily the party of Donald Trump. But this is the whole point: I do think we are in a battle, that it may be a battle that really needs to happen, for our party to say what is it we stand for now when it comes to policy. But as much as anything, are we aspirational or are we a party that feeds on fear and division?” Kinzinger said. “If you’re a leader of the Republican Party right now, you need to be focused on one thing — not winning another election, that’s not what we should be focused on right now. What we should be focused on is restoring the integrity of this party,” he said. Claar supported Trump and even co-hosted a fundraiser for him at the Bolingbrook Golf Club. That’s where the state GOP leaders were supposed to meet Saturday until a predicted snowstorm pushed off the date to Feb. 6. But he said Illinois Republicans should take a wait-and-see attitude on the party’s future and whether it should continue to align itself with the former president. “Let’s just leave it alone and see how it plays out,” Claar said. He said if the party does decide to speak out on Kinzinger, he would oppose any effort to censure the congressman for his conduct, a course taken by GOP leaders in some states against congressional members who voted for impeachment. “It serves no purpose to have headlines that say, ‘Republican state party censures congressman.’ That would just give it more legs,” Claar said. “I think it would be better to just issue an observation of the reality that a congressman can say what he wants and it’s up to his constituency to decide whether they like it or not.” Kinzinger did not respond to a request to speak about the GOP state central committee’s potential actions. On Sunday, during his “Meet The Press” interview, Kinzinger said he viewed GOP efforts to reprimand Trump opponents as an example of the “cancel culture” that Republicans have outspokenly criticized Democrats for exhibiting. . .Much of the state GOP’s decision on how to respond to Kinzinger may come down to its pick of a new chairman to replace Schneider, a former Cook County commissioner and Hanover Township trustee from Streamwood.)

(DIERSEN: I have been a member of the conservative media since 2000. Hate-filled Trump-hating Trump-haters will pressure the new Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party to stop me from sending out GOPUSA ILLINOIS newsletters, and failing that, to stop everyone from reading those newsletters. They will pressure him to put more pressure on Jim Jay, the Chairman of the DuPage County Republican Central Committee and Chris LeVan, the Chairman of the Milton Township Republican Organization, to stop me from sending out GOPUSA ILLINOIS newsletters, and failing that, to stop everyone from reading those newsletters. They will stress to Zay and to LeVan that because I am a Republican Precinct Committeeman, they have tremendous power to punish me for sending out the newsletters. They can call for the following to officially blacklist me: a) the chairmen of the other eight township organizations in DuPage County, b) all the Republican Precinct Committeemen in DuPage County and especially those in Milton Township including Amy Grant, Dan Cronin, Grant Eckhoff, Phill Suess, and Chris Heidorn, c) all the Republican elected officials in DuPage County and especially those who represent DuPage County’s 4th District , Milton Township, Wheaton, Wheaton’s West District, and my precinct, and d) the voters in DuPage County and especially those in DuPage County’s 4th District, Milton Township, Wheaton, Wheaton’s West District, and my precinct.)
https://dailycaller.com/2021/01/30/corporate-media-deplatform-conservative-fox-cnn-censorship-journalist/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Using the wreckage of the Jan. 6 Capitol riots as leverage, corporate media and the pundit class postured themselves as the de facto arbiters of public opinion, and promptly set their sights on conservative media. They took almost no time to pounce. Within hours of the riots, corporate media reporters and pundits pointed to the presence of Proud Boys at the Capitol riots and organizing on social media. They implied or outright called for more censorship and encouraged the White House to enact new domestic surveillance powers. Naturally, deplatforming media companies that do not adhere to the dominant liberal orthodoxy became a subject of serious discussion. Facebook’s former chief security officer Alex Stamos alleged during a Jan. 17 segment of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” that conservative influencers and media outlets have “abused” press freedom, and advocated deplatforming conservatives from both traditional and social media. “We have given a lot of leeway — both in the traditional media and on social media — to people who have a very broad range of political views,” Stamos told CNN host Brian Stelter. “We have to turn down the capability of these conservative influencers to reach these huge audiences.” Stamos singled out One America News Network (OANN) and Newsmax in particular and accused those outlets of promoting “violent extremism” in the same vein as the Islamic terrorist group ISIS. “We are going to have to figure out the OANN and Newsmax problem. These companies have freedom of speech, but I’m not sure we need Verizon, AT&T, Comcast and such bringing them into tens of millions of homes,” he told Stelter. CNN senior media reporter Oliver Darcy also commented on the “Reliable Sources” segment in a Jan. 17 tweet, adding that broadcasters and cable providers should be asked “about why they beam channels” like OANN and Newsmax. “Do they have any second thoughts about distributing these channels given their election denialism content?” Darcy asked. Earlier this month, Darcy questioned in a CNN Business article why cable providers continue to air conservative media after some outlets contested the results of the 2020 election. Darcy singled out Fox News in particular and claimed the network was just as “irresponsible and dangerous” as comparatively smaller outlets like OANN and Newsmax. “Sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson and Mark Levin and others are responsible for the lies they peddle to their audiences,” Darcy wrote. “But the TV companies that beam them into millions of homes around the country also bear some responsibility.” Fox News host Tucker Carlson responded to the accusation during a Jan. 7 segment of “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and noted that CNN was effectively “calling for censorship” of a competitor. “CNN staffers have already contacted the six major cable carriers in this country, the companies that carry our signal into your home, and pressured them to drop Fox News,” Carlson said. “Here you have a news company calling for censorship, a TV network demanding that media conglomerates ban its competitors.” No cable provider has openly discussed dropping Fox News or any other conservative outlet. Such a move would lead to intense backlash and almost certainly a legal challenge before the Federal Communications Commission over preferential treatment, according to Bloomberg. Targeting Fox News in particular could present a conflict of interest for CNN given that the two are competing news networks. Although unlikely, even one cable provider dropping Fox News could lead to a substantial loss in revenue for Fox Corporation. While Stelter and Darcy have not personally called for cable providers to drop media outlets, their actions constitute a pressure campaign against broadcasters to silence conservative media. CNN is also not alone in this effort. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof argued in a Jan. 13 editorial that “cable providers should be asked why they distribute channels that peddle lies.” Washington Post columnist Max Boot wrote in a Jan. 18 editorial that cable providers should “step in and kick Fox News off.” These developments are a response to the Jan. 6 pro-Trump riot at the Capitol, but corporate media outlets pressuring providers to silence conservative outlets is not new. After NBC News raised concerns about coverage of last year’s George Floyd riots from The Federalist, Google notified the conservative outlet in June that their website would be blocked from using Google’s ad platform. NBC News and Google later released contradictory messages in response to backlash. But the push to silence conservative media has since gained steam after multiple outlets were accused of promoting election misinformation that ultimately fueled the Capitol riot earlier this month. These efforts come after tech companies like Twitter and Facebook permanently suspended Trump’s social media accounts and purged thousands of conservative users. Corporate media has now provided a platform for Democratic lawmakers and progressive commentators who not only want to silence conservative media but also “deprogram” Trump supporters. Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson and “1619 Project” lead writer Nikole Hannah-Jones likened Trump voters to “members of a cult” during an MSNBC segment Jan. 12 and insinuated that the 75 million people who voted for the former president would “have to be deprogrammed.” Even before the Capitol riot, California Democrats’ regional director David Atkins suggested in a series of tweets Nov. 17 that conservatives should be re-educated the way citizens of Nazi Germany and Japan were after World War II.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: John Weaver, a longtime Republican strategist and co-founder of the prominent anti-Trump group the Lincoln Project, has for years sent unsolicited and sexually provocative messages online to young men, often while suggesting he could help them get work in politics, according to interviews with 21 men who received them. His solicitations included sending messages to a 14-year-old, asking questions about his body while he was still in high school and then more pointed ones after he turned 18. These messages from Mr. Weaver, 61, who helped run John McCain’s presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2008 and John Kasich’s in 2016, did not lead to physical encounters except in one consensual case, and none of the men accused Mr. Weaver of unlawful conduct. Rather, many of them described feeling preyed upon by an influential older man in the field in which they wanted to work, and believing they had to engage with his repeated messaging or lose a professional opportunity. Mr. Weaver sent overt sexual solicitations to at least 10 of the men and, in the most explicit messages, offered professional and personal assistance in exchange for sex. He told one man he would “spoil you when we see each other,” according to a message reviewed by The New York Times. “Help you other times. Give advice, counsel, help with bills. You help me … sensually.”)

DAILY HERALD
— Oppose racial profiling – Bradley Williams, Mundelein
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20210127/oppose-racial-profiling
(FROM THE LETTER: HB0038 is currently in committee of the Illinois House of Representatives. This bill should concern Illinoisans who aspire for a community so beautifully described by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as one where people “will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” In a departure from Dr. King’s aspirations, HB0038 calls for consideration of race in the hiring process of public-school teachers. This would seem to violate several federal and state civil rights laws. Specifically, the Illinois Civil Rights Act of 2003 which explains that a unit of the state cannot “subject a person to discrimination under any program or activity on the grounds of that person’s race, color, national origin, or gender,” as well as the language of the Illinois Human Rights Act which prohibits race-based discrimination in employment. While one component of HB0038 undermines Dr. King’s message through employment considerations, another does so through mandates of curriculum and instruction at the local level. Starting as early as elementary school, HB0038 would require students to learn curriculum based in a discipline of academia that places race as an essential and defining part of human interaction. In this model, one’s status as oppressor or oppressed is heavily determined by skin color. In one application of this curriculum, groups of third-grade students analyzed their racial and sexual identities according to “power and privilege” and then wrote reflections on their status as being either privileged or oppressed. One parent described the activities as “basically teaching racism.” Humbly, I submit, a society that places race as an essentially defining element of most human interaction is not one so admirably envisioned by Dr. King. With that in mind, Illinoisans should oppose HB0038.)

— DIERSEN HEADLINE: A hate-filled Trump-hating Trump-hater promotes Adam Kinzinger and Joe Walsh. In my opinion, my becoming the only active member in GAO’s Chicago office in a class action lawsuit that charged my GAO superiors with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation in 1988 when I was 40 years old was as serious as Kinzinger’s voting to impeach Trump in 2021 when he was 42 years old. My Democrat GAO superiors immediately threw me off audits of IRS and gave me an adverse job assignments, unfair performance expectations, and unfair performance appraisals. They might have succeeded in getting rid of me if Henry Hyde had not come to my defense. However, they continued to keep me off audits of IRS, to give me unfair performance expectations, to give me unfair performance appraisals, and to always rank me in the lower half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. In 1997 they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer.” They were furious that I became Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and Forensic Accountant in 1997 and that I earned a job-related master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997 because the aforesaid frustrated their efforts to get rid of me. If I had had drinking problems like Kinzinger had, I would not have gotten jobs washing dishes 1964-1966; cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, and pumping gasoline in 1966; delivering mail 1966-1969; working on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumping gasoline 1971-1972; collecting delinquent taxes 1971-1980; or auditing federal agencies 1980-1997. IRS would not have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974 and GAO would not have promoted me in 1986. If I had had drinking problems like Kinzinger had, Loyola might not have accepted me in 1972, DePaul might not have accepted me in 1976, and IIT might not have accepted me in 1992. If I had had drinking problems like Kinzinger had, I doubt that I would have passed CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 or passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981. WASHINGTON FREE BEACON
— Biden LGBT Rights Order Charges Into Culture War – Kevin Daley
https://freebeacon.com/courts/biden-lgbt-rights-order-charges-into-culture-war/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Biden’s directive broaches almost every aspect of domestic policy, from housing to refugee resettlement to transgender student athletes. The order requires every federal agency to make clear that civil rights laws banning sex discrimination also ban discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity, citing the Supreme Court’s landmark gay rights ruling in June 2020. Many changes resulting from Biden’s order, like a ban on anti-gay discrimination in renting, are unlikely to cause controversy. Other mandates will accelerate long-simmering cultural disputes, like those allowing trans students to participate in women’s sports or use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice. While Biden says his focus is fixed on the coronavirus pandemic and economic stimulus, cultural conflict is poised to play a defining role in the coming years of his presidency.)

TOWNHALL
— Sorry, But That’s the Rule: President Asterisk Is A Draft Dodger – Kurt Schlichter
(DIERSEN: What have your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes used against you the most? Mine have stressed since 1966 a) that I was 1-A, b) that I got student draft deferments 1966-1970 and a financial hardship draft deferment 1970-1971, and c) that I never enlisted. I should write a book about critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who used the aforesaid against me the most. I would focus on my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates at the Park Forest Post Office 1966-1969, Firestone Stores 1970-1972, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997. To this day, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes shout at veterans, and at everyone else, that I am a draft dodger.)
https://townhall.com/columnists/kurtschlichter/2021/01/25/sorry-but-thats-the-rule-president-asterisk-is-a-draft-dodger-n2583602
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I sure think these New Rules are dumb, but what can you do? In fact, I have always hated the whole chickenhawk thing, the idea that, rather than military service being a character resume plus, its absence is a minus and some sort of character flaw. Only about 30% of people can qualify physically and otherwise for service, so right off you are consigning about 70% of folks to some sort of second-hand moral status. That’s stupid. Further, the idea that an American citizen who did not serve has some sort of disqualification from opining on military issues is utterly unAmerican. . .This was demonstrated with the whole “Cadet Bone Spurs” thing about Donald Trump. The “cadet” part relates to him having gone to military school, which I guess the New Rules decree is something to be ashamed of now. As with shifting attitude toward the National Guard troops from violent threats to the literal safety of oppressed people to heroic defenders of the country from Thor-wannabes to tiresome eyesores to be consigned to a Congressional parking garage, you need constant updates on whether military stuff is good or bad at any given moment. Anyway, the “Bone Spurs” part was the medical diagnosis that kept Trump from draft eligibility. For some reason, this diagnosis strikes people who have never had to do a long ruck march over rough terrain with half their body weight on their backs as hilarious. . .Trump got four student deferments as an undergrad. Then the Army – not anyone else – decided he as not physically fit for military service. No shock – go to a MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station), tell the doc you have bone spurs on your paws, and see how fast you get transferred back to Fort Living Room. . .And here’s another thing, and maybe I’m a bit technical, but Trump was never drafted. So, it’s kind of hard to “dodge the draft” when you weren’t drafted. Draft dodgers typically got their induction notices and split to Manitoba. That was draft dodging – and St. Jimmy Carter pardoned them all, so it’s weird that draft dodging is now bad again. Regardless, the New Rules are the New Rules and I am helpless to alter them. * is just as much of a draft dodger as the Bad Orange Man. The Asterisk-In-Chief got five student deferments as an undergrad. Then the Army apparently decided that he had a history of asthma and that was that. Putting aside that he’s more known for gaffes and wandering about aimlessly than coughing fits, President * was disqualified, just as a huge percentage of potential recruits are. And like Trump, he was never drafted, making it hard in any but the most meta way to fairly consider him a “draft dodger.” But none of that matters because of the New Rules. The New Rules decree that * is a cowardly draft dodger unfit to hold the office of president, so there you are. Sorry.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: I’ve learned that ageism and age stereotyping are very real prejudices in our society. I’m guilty of both on occasion, including my feelings about President Joe Biden. (FROM THE ARTICLE: On the one hand are those who were horrified by the Jan. 6 attack and the no-holds-barred efforts to overturn Trump’s loss in the two months after the election. On the other are staunch Trump supporters who believe local GOP officials didn’t do enough to support the president’s fight. The most outspoken of those expressing these opposite views say they can no longer support the Republican Party as it exists today. As a result, the Lancaster County GOP saw hundreds of its registered voters leave the party in the first half of January. In the week of the Jan. 6 attack, 249 Lancaster County Republicans switched their registration to other parties. Of those, 146 became Democrats. These party switches continued into the following week: From Jan. 11 to Jan. 18, 87 Lancaster County Republicans switched their registration to other parties, with 76 becoming Democrats, according to county Pennsylvania Department of State data. For all of 2020, 858 GOP voters in the county switched to other parties, meaning that in just the first two week of 2021 the party lost nearly 40% of the number of voters it lost to other parties in the entire preceding year. Although the party’s margin has narrowed over the past decade, Republicans still make up a slim majority of the county’s registered voters, currently 51.4%, giving the party a firm grasp on elected offices up and down the ballot outside Lancaster city and its suburbs, blue dots on the county’s otherwise dark red political terrain.)
