My critics/opponents can stress how, aside from Henry Hyde’s coming to my defense in 1989, Republicans who represented me in Congress while I was a federal employee 1966-1969 and 1971-1997 and while Diersen v. Republicans who represented me in Congress treated me like they supported “up-or-out” and agreed with the adverse actions that my Democrat superiors in the federal government took against me. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,568 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968. One could wonder if Republicans who represented me in Congress might have come to my defense if I had contributed lots of money to their campaigns.)

The law is part of a pattern of persecution of Muslims carried out by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party, who seek to transform India from an avowedly secular, pluralistic country into a Hindu one. This past August, Modi revoked the autonomy of India’s only Muslim-majority state, Kashmir, and flooded it with troops, in an ongoing siege. After smiting Santa Anna and declaring independence, they favored annexation by the United States. Similarly, in Alta California, most new settlers and Californios (Hispanic natives of California) supported a revolt against the unstable Mexican government. Even before the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), Californios incited several revolts against the Mexican government, as outlined in this National Park Service lesson. After giving them a thorough whipping in the war — U.S. forces even raised the Stars and Stirpes over the Halls of Montezuma in Mexico City — the U.S. magnanimously paid Mexico $15 million, and several more millions to pay off Mexican debt to U.S. citizens. Considering the Louisiana Purchase, comprising more land, also cost about $15 million, an interpretation is that Mexico, having been soundly humiliated in battle, can be thankful we anted up at all. After all, they desperately petitioned for peace. Whose land was stolen? Mexico only controlled the land they relinquished in the Mexican Cession for one short generation, and our financial payments generously helped alleviate their financial crisis.)

As marijuana’s legalization rolls out, the law is defining where it can and cannot be used. While you can smoke and pose it behind closed doors, rules change if you have children in the house. “You cannot knowingly use in close proximity [around] anyone under 21 years of age,” Illinois “Weed Lawyer” W. Scott Hanken said. Any marijuana kept in your house must also be in a pre-packaged, childproof container and kept out of reach. “It’s not a good idea to expose them to a mind-altering substance and we know there can be secondhand smoke that could be inhaled by the cannabis,” Sangamon County Sheriff Campbell said. “So it’s vital that if the parents are going to partake in this, that they don’t expose their children to it.” Sheriff Campbell said his department already investigates cases where they are tipped off about a child smelling like cannabis and sometimes even meth-making chemicals. It’s something they can take action on. “We would look at the totality of the circumstances and determine whether or not the parent was endangering the life or safety of a child,” Sheriff Campbell said. “At that time, we would decide whether or not to either immediately arrest them or to file charges through the state’s attorney’s office.” Mandated reporters, like teachers, are required to report suspected child neglect or endangerment to law enforcement. You also need to be careful if you watch other children. “If you also happen to have a child daycare in that residence, obviously you cannot use it or consume it there,” Hankin said.
