Despite such demand, the numbers within the profession remain unbalanced. Yes, women have come to represent more than 50 percent of accounting graduates over the last 20 years, and over the past 10, the percentages of accounting undergraduates and graduates who are minorities have also increased. In fact, aTrends report shows that 42 percent of accounting graduates are African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, multiethnic, or other. However, total minority hiring in the world of American CPAs has remained inexcusably low, and that must change so as to better serve both the workforce and its customers. The U.S. Census of 2010 predicted that minorities will be the majority by 2042 — that’s about two decades away from now — and communities and clients are shifting in their demographic makeup to reflect that. Moreover, the combined purchasing power of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians was at $4 trillion in 2018 according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth, and demographers predict that the growth of minority populations will contribute between 44-70 percent to the total growth of U.S. purchasing power from 2000 to 2045. Still, this isn’t groundbreaking news, and diversity initiatives have been nudging accounting departments and firms for years to sit up and notice that the United States is more of a melting pot than ever before. But the need for CPA firms to bolster diversity and inclusion — and to provide not just a seat at the table, but also a voice — has never been as critical or urgent as it is today. Because despite America being increasingly diverse, minority workers are still likelier than whites to be unemployed or declined a promotion or senior position. In 2016, Pew Research published that 40 percent of both men and women were more likely to hire men over women; in 2018, almost 90 percent of corporate executives were white and roughly 73 percent were male, and just three Fortune 500 companies in the country were headed by an African-American as CEO. Not much has changed since then, so it seems that while the world around the accounting profession is rapidly changing, the world within it is not.)

(FROM THE PRESS RELEASE: The first day of Early Voting in DuPage County has gone smoothly, with hundreds of voters – some of whom lined up outside the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton before dawn – having cast their ballots by mid-afternoon. “We’re quite happy with how it’s gone today,” DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said. “Though the line of voters snaked through the Fairgrounds parking lot today, people were patient, they practiced social distancing, and everyone – voters, pollworkers, and my staff – worked together to make this first day run smoothly.” At 8 a.m. the doors to the polling place at the Fairgrounds were opened and Kaczmarek announced, “the polls are open!” At the close of the day, 660 voters had exercised their right to vote at the Fairgrounds. The site is open 8 a.m. thru 4:30 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays through Oct. 17. Hours, as well as the number of Early Voting sites, expand on Oct. 19, when 18 sites all over the county will open to voters offering touchscreen voting. The current Fairgrounds site will offer paper ballots through Nov. 2. Plenty of PPE, including hand sanitizer, masks, and latex gloves, were available for voters. A professional cleaning crew wiped down surfaces throughout the day at the Fairgrounds voting site. “It’s great to see such enthusiasm by voters on the first day,” Kaczmarek said, “but we still have 39 days until Nov. 3, and you can vote on any of those days, either in-person or in the comfort of your home by mail ballot.” Thursday was also the day the Clerk’s Office began sending mail ballots to voters. Those ballots should start showing up in mailboxes of voters who’ve requested them soon. “If you’ve applied for a mail ballot, there’s no need to vote in person,” Kaczmarek said. “More than 159,000 DuPage County voters have already requested mail ballots, and my office will make sure each of those voters gets their ballot. Voters still have just over four weeks to request a mail ballot, but we recommend that if you plan to vote by mail, you apply for your ballot online as soon as possible. “This election may feel very different from any previous election – from the masks and plastic shields at the polling places to the disinformation coming from many quarters, but voting is still the same,” Kaczmarek said. “There are three ways to vote – by mail, in-person before Election Day, and in-person on Election Day. (FROM THE ARTICLE: This year’s presidential election is poised to be historic for many reasons, and Wednesday in counties all around Chicago, final preparations were underway for the start of early voting Thursday. DuPage County is working to make voters and election judges feel safe. The DuPage County Fairgrounds will be the county’s first and only polling place for early in-person voting. The county clerk moved early voting there for many reason, most significantly because of the size of the room and ability to keep doors wide open if needed. Less than 24 hours before DuPage County voters enter the doors election judges sat through training. This year in a pandemic that training contained a whole new set of rules and a whole new set of personal safety equipment. “Everything has been turned upside down and inside out,” said first term DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek. Kaczmarek said planning has been underway since the primary ended. She said $3.5 million in state and federal Cares Act money has been used to buy now needed items like shields, sanitizer, masks and new equipment to handle mail-in ballots. Kaczmarek also doubled election judges’ pay as an incentive. Early voting judges will now get $20 an hour. “We’re in pretty good shape with election judges. We’re always recruiting. It’s a move other county clerks have made, too, in hopes of avoiding a judge shortage. Melissa Nachman said it helped sway her, admitting she was concerned about her safety. “However, I felt that it was important. We need to have election judges just to make our elections work well, and I weighed the two things,” Nachman said. Safety is clearly a priority. Polling stations are six feet apart. Floor markers demand social distancing, and a mail-in drop box is near the door for those dropping of mail-in ballots. DuPage County has gotten 155,000 mail-in ballot applications. Statewide there have been almost 1.8 million. “That is an incredible number. The most we’ve ever had cast in vote by mail was just two years ago; 430,000 voted by mail,” said the Illinois State Board of Elections’ Matt Dietrich. Dietrich said at this rate half of the presidential votes could be cast before election day. He echoes what many election leaders say: the earlier the better. Early voting begins in all of Illinois except Cook County and the City of Chicago. That’s also when those requested mail-in ballots will begin to be sent out. Paper ballots begin Thursday, but touch screen voting begins Oct. 19 in DuPage County.)
