— Resolution calling for Ford Heights library audit sparks contentious debate in House – Angela Underwood (DIERSEN: What do you know about Ford Heights and the south suburbs? Rep.  William Davis (D-Homewood) says that Ives sits “in her ivory tower in Wheaton where they have a ton of businesses and a lot of opportunity” and that Ives “has no idea of the true problems that exist” in his district and that Ives “has never even been to the communities” in his district and that Ives should “leave my communities out of her mouth” and that until Ives is ready to come to the table and talk about helping his district, she should remain silent and that “Can you do that, I don’t think you can?” I lived in the south suburbs 1948-1976. I worked in Chicago Heights 1964-1966 and 1970-1972. I worked in Park Forest 1966-1969. I worked in Harvey and Joliet 1972-1974. In addition to Ford Heights, Rep. Thaddeus Jones (D-Calumet City) represents Crete where I lived 1948-1972 and where my brother continues to live in a home that I have half ownership in. The real estate taxes on that home are about 10% of market value. I delivered major appliances to homes in Ford Heights for Firestone Stores 1970-1972. I collected delinquent federal taxes in Ford Heights 1972-1973.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A debate over a resolution directing the auditor general to perform an assessment of the Ford Heights Public Library District brought harsh words during House debate May 10. “This will allow the current board to have a health audit,” Rep. Thaddeus Jones (D-Calumet City) said of the resolution, HR843. However, the discussion for a clean audit turned ugly after Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) shared her particular concern for the south suburbs and Cook County, where property taxes are reaching up to 5 and 10 percent in property values. “You are seeing a continuing decline in services including police and fire protection,” Ives said. Rep. (FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The 2018 Memorial Day Parade is Monday, May 28, 2018, beginning at 10 a.m. Due to construction taking place on part of the usual parade route, the parade is scheduled to step off from Memorial Park and proceed:

During the parade, the Wheaton Police Department, with the cooperation and assistance of the Milton Township Highway Department, will temporarily modify the traffic pattern on Warrenville Road from Wheaton Cemetery / Merrill and Warrenville Road to Orchard Road from two-way to only one way southbound. This condition will exist for approximately two and a half hours (9:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.). During the event, these streets will be adequately staffed with uniformed Police Officers to assist and direct traffic. Residents, citizens, and motorists are being asked for their cooperation in not moving the barricades to ensure the safety of the parade participants. Motorists may experience temporary traffic delays and choose to alter their travel route to avoid these areas. Our country relies on these talented men and women to perform critical duties across all sectors of government, from national security and healthcare to economic expansion and infrastructure development,” Turner wrote. Turner’s opposition as a Republican is notable, as Democrats have traditionally held a strong line against cutting federal employee benefits in order to balance the budget. Pon’s legislative proposals would likely require fairly unified Republican support to pass into actual legislation. According to a news release on the letter of opposition, Turner’s district contains 30,000 federal employees that would likely be impacted by the proposed changes. Pon justified the proposed changes as bringing the government more in line with private sector practices, though some have argued that prospective employees are attracted to the government over the private sector due to more generous retirement packages. “In order to ‘recruit, retain and honor a world-class workforce to serve the American people’ as OPM seeks, the federal government must maintain a competitive benefits package befitting such a workforce. With the United States’ growing economy and a tightening labor market, we cannot afford to make the federal government a less attractive place to work by diminishing the very benefits that help the government keep pace with jobs in the (often higher-paying) private sector,” Turner wrote.)

And every 4 years, this being one of those years, the county conventions are also the place where under the easily rigged system only the Illinois Republican Party uses, the 18 members of the state central committee (“SCC”) are picked. One member is selected from each of the state’s U.S. congressional districts. The SCC is the State GOP’s senior governing board and its members pick the state party chairman. The current state chair is Governor Rauner flunky, Tim Schneider of suburban Cook County.)
