CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Illinois Democratic Party rallies against Vice President Mike Pence in Rosemont – Rachel Hinton
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/supporters-protesters-rosemont-pence-tax-cut-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The new Illinois Democratic Party executive director rallied protesters in Rosemont on Friday in advance of a speech by Vice President Mike Pence touting President Donald Trump’s tax-cut policy. Pence’s speech, titled “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” is part of a series sponsored by America First Policies, a non-profit organization that promotes the policies of the Trump Administration — the Rosemont stop is the 17th on the tour. Other speakers at the event included U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., and Gov. Bruce Rauner, who was to introduce Pence. At previous speeches in Iowa and Kansas City, Pence talked about energy, agriculture and labor plans that were all implemented to achieve Trump’s campaign promise to “Make America great again.” In Rosemont, people from around the state, decked out in flag shawls and bright red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps, waited to hear from the vice president.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Once again, a public agency, without bothering to clue in the taxpayers, is throwing money at a top employee as he heads out the door. This time, on Thursday, it was the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. The agency that handles our local storm and sewage water agreed to pay $95,000 to its former executive director, David St. Pierre, along with six months’ worth of health insurance, according to the Better Government Association. The vote came two weeks after St. Pierre resigned, and seven weeks after he quietly went on paid leave.)

DAILY HERALD
— Pence fires up voters for upcoming midterm elections – Christopher Placek and Jake Griffin
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180713/pence-fires-up-voters-for-upcoming-midterm-elections
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost immediately after Pence took the stage, protesters inside the Westin O’Hare grand ballroom made their presence known. In total, Pence’s speech was interrupted five times by protesters, who were escorted out of the building by police. One woman held a yellow flag that read, “Trump and Pence must go.” When Pence began to praise U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, of Wheaton, a man said, “Has anyone seen Peter Roskam? I haven’t seen him. Where is he?” Each time, the crowd of about 600 chanted “USA! USA!” Tickets to the event, called “Tax Cuts to Put America First,” were free and available by registering on the website of America First Policies, the group connected to the pro-Trump America First Action super PAC. “Thanks for coming out today. I’m really grateful for almost everybody that came,” Pence joked to the crowd. “I respect everybody that came. That’s what freedom sounds like.” Rosemont authorities said no one was charged, and they described the protest of some 100 people outside the hotel as peaceful. Police, at the behest of the Secret Service, pushed protesters across River Road to the east sidewalk northeast of the hotel. Rosemont public safety officers used their bikes as crowd control. Pence’s caravan used a back entrance, avoiding the protesters. “We are advocating getting rid of the Trump/Pence regime through persistent, persistent nonviolent protests,” said Tricey Morelli, spokesman for the Chicago chapter of Refuse Fascism.)

Tell us about Barack Obama’s. Tell us about Bill Clinton’s. Like millions of young men during the Vietnam War, President Trump sought and obtained legitimate deferments. I myself had several before I was finally drafted. Some of us even fled to Canada. You liberals applauded those guys, but now you criticize the president. I’m appalled that the News-Sun publishes your idiotic epithet for our president. They certainly would never have printed such a phony, derogatory comment about President Obama.)

REPUBLICAN NEWS WATCH
— GOP Boss Hogs 4 Titles But Says Black Trump Supporters Can’t Have 1 – DOUG IBENDAHL
http://republicannewswatch.com/wp/?p=14478
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I strongly suspect one big reason that neither Sean Morrison nor Tim Schneider lifts a finger for President Trump is they look at polls saying Trump is unpopular in Cook County and they fear standing-up for the President would hurt their prospects of keeping their cushy County Board positions. In my opinion they have a serious conflict of interest. In any case, it’s at least a reasonable question they should have to address. But on one point there can be no disagreement. Donald Trump is the best thing the GOP has going for it. It’s not even close. Trump is where all the energy is and he’s pretty much the only Republican who is getting things done, anywhere. Trump is also making politics fun again and is bringing in new people like never before. It’s a shame we are burdened with so many Republican officials in Illinois who will never get it, but the fact is President Trump has completely changed the game, on multiple levels. As just one example there is a major paradigm shift going on in the black community where black folks who never, ever would have considered supporting a Republican president are supporting this one. Kanye West is just one high profile example.)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/04/30/job-creators-network-illinois-rally-canceled-left-wing-activists-planned-crash/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Job Creators Network, one of the nation’s largest pro-jobs grassroots organizations, announced on Sunday that its scheduled rally near Chicago, Illinois, was postponed after “opposition” activists ambushed the event. “We are a small business advocacy group that simply wants to discuss the impact that the Tax Cuts and Job Act is having on both the small business community and the American economy overall. Unfortunately, leading up to today’s event it became apparent that the opposition was willing to go to great lengths to distract from the goal of our bus tour by disrupting our West Chicago stop by making it as volatile as possible,” Alfredo Ortiz, CEO of Job Creators Network, said of his organization’s decision to cancel a bus tour stop in West Chicago. “Crash the Tax Cuts Bus Tour” reads the Facebook page, an event hosted by a group called The Coalition for a Better Illinois 6th, which, according to its about page, “is a network of grassroots groups in the 6th Congressional District of Illinois who believe that everyone deserves equal and fair treatment regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status and that a successful democracy requires an informed and engaged public.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Taping “Connected to Chicago with Bill Cameron” for Sunday night at 7, Democratic candidate for governor Chris Kennedy was controversial talking about Gov Rauner’s GOP challenger State Representative Jeanne Ives. Chris Kennedy is candid. When Cameron asked who he’d rather run against, Bruce Rauner or Jeanne Ives, he brought up religion and said Ives “has no moral core” that he can identify with. “You know Jeannie Ives, it’s kind of interesting to me, she’s proved you can be a Catholic without being Christian,” said Kennedy. “And if you want evidence of that, you can see the ad that she ran attacking immigrants in the United States which were largely the people of Abraham in this country. We don’t attack immigrants. To attack the LGBT community in that ad. That’s not what we do.” The Ives campaign has a biting response. It says, “Chris Kennedy might want to check with Cardinal Cupich or Pope Francis on matters like respecting and protecting unborn life before he starts excommunicating people from the Church.” It adds “Kennedy is just another vacuous, virtue-signaling Leftist hack who worships at the altar of big government and prays to the almighty Mike Madigan.”)

Trump wrote on Twitter on Monday that there is “not much political support (to put it mildly)” for raising the age limit from 18 to 21 to purchase powerful rifles like the one used to kill 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last month.)

Further, I have served as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000, and what GOPUSA state editors do, is what journalists do.)
http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/judicial/376948-proposed-us-journalist-protection-act-has-more-drawbacks-than
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The bill has bigger drawbacks. Any law to protect journalists as a special class needs to define who is a journalist, and this leaves an opening for the government to start making judgement calls about who is not a journalist. While the definition adopted in the bill is fairly broad, and would encompass freelancers and all kinds of media, there are still concerns about defining who is and who is not a reporter. This is especially true because 31 of the 44 attacks documented on the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker occurred during protests. As more livestreamers and citizen journalists show up at protests, it can be tricky, even for press freedom groups, to determine who to count as a journalist. The government is often far more conservative. In December, federal prosecutors tried photojournalist and livestreamer Alexei Wood on chargers of riot, conspiracy, and destruction of property. Even though Wood’s video footage from the day shows that he took no part in any vandalism, the prosecution tried to make the entire case about whether he was a journalist or not. The definitional issue exists with other legislation to protect reporters. A shield bill, for instance, would also require the government to define journalists. This was one of the major areas of debate in 2013 when there was serious energy to put in place a bill protecting journalists from federal subpoenas that would require them to divulge their sources. In the end legislation is always about weighing the costs versus the benefits. In the context of an attorney general who claims to have 27 open leak investigations and wants to make it easier to subpoena reporters, a shield law would at least have immediate concrete benefits to weigh against potential drawbacks. The Journalist Protection Act is an effort in the right direction, and there is an argument that it could serve as a useful global model. The diagnosis of increased hostility bleeding into physical threats is spot on, given what we’ve seen in the data. However, Swalwell’s proposed legislation would not offer journalists any material benefit, even as it would allow the federal government to define who is and who is not a journalist. In the current climate, that may not be a worthwhile tradeoff.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Lincoln’s biggest accomplishment was probably the abolishment of slavery, an issue he began speaking out against as a young adult. His first statement on the issue is said to have been March 3, 1837, when he said “the institution of slavery is founded on both injustice and bad policy” during a speech at the state legislature when it was in Vandalia. It was an issue he would repeatedly discuss during his political career: When accepting the Republican nomination in June 1858 during a convention in Springfield to be the party’s candidate for U.S. Senate, Lincoln gave his “A house divided against itself cannot stand” speech.)

My IRS and GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I should not get any promotions because I was already undeservedly filth rich. In 1980, they wanted me to suffer much more of a pay cut than the $19,203 pay cut in today’s dollars that I suffered to transfer from IRS to GAO. Of course, they wanted me to be always ranked in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, and especially so after my wife and I gave up trying to have children, we did not adopt, and we did not become foster parents. Of course, the wanted me to take GAO’s $25,000 early retirement buyout in 1993 when I was 45 years old. Of course, they were overjoyed when they succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49. Most of my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government painted themselves as having financial difficulties, most commonly because of the high cost of raising their children, and therefore, that they were in need of pay increases and promotions.)

Natural marriage also has numerous societal and economic benefits. For example: Married men earn 10-40% more than comparable single men; Marriage increases the earning power of men; Married men are less likely to be fired from a job; The typical married man in his 50’s has three times the financial assets of his unmarried peer.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: China’s development of a nationwide tracking system to rate the reputations of individuals, businesses and even government officials could spread to the West and change the lives of many for years to come, The Atlantic reports. The Chinese government plans to launch its Social Credit System in 2020. The aim is to judge the trustworthiness of the country’s 1.3 billion residents by monitoring and evaluating their purchases, who their friends are, how much time they spend watching TV or playing video games, what bills and taxes they pay (or don’t) and where they are at any given time. Launched in 2012, the initiative plans to “make trustworthy people benefit everywhere and untrustworthy people restricted everywhere” by the time it is fully implemented.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Rauner, Ives to spar live online at 11 a.m. (DIERSEN: One would expect that far more Republican incumbents, rather than their Republican primary challengers, wanted to get rid of TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois. If I was still the TAPROOT chairman, the organization would be hosting debates for a) Rauner v. Ives, b) Sanguinetti v. Morthland, c) Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee candidates, and d) many other races. Those who wanted to get rid of TAPROOT were furious when I asked candidates if they would defend and advance all the planks in the IRP platform if they were elected. From what I see, protecting Republican incumbents is a top priority for the IRP, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, etc. Of course, there are exceptions. The IRP succeeded in getting Peter Fitzgerald to not seek a second term. That brought us Jack Ryan, Alan Keyes, and Obama.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-editorial-board-20180129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and primary challenger state Rep. Jeanne Ives will appear before the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board at 11 a.m. Monday for an endorsement session that will be streamed online at chicagotribune.com. It’s the first time since Ives announced her campaign that voters will have a chance to see the two candidates together. And it might be the last. No televised debates between the two are scheduled, and Rauner has been careful not to talk about Ives much, once suggesting she is a “fringe” candidate. Rauner’s position is a common one for well-heeled incumbents: If your opponent isn’t well-known and doesn’t have a lot of money to remedy that, don’t raise his or her profile. (A Republican-aligned pollster this month suggested the governor has a big early lead.) Ives, though, has criticized Rauner at every turn. She hit him when he said “I am not in charge” late last year. A West Point graduate, Ives has slammed Rauner over veterans’ deaths in Quincy. And as recently as last week, she continued to criticize the governor’s signature of a law to expand the availability of taxpayer-funded abortions. That last issue, of course, is the one that sparked Ives’ candidacy in the first place. Ives is a third-term lawmaker from Wheaton, and Rauner is seeking a second term as governor. The Tribune Editorial Board, which operates separately from the newsroom, will use the session to help decide on its endorsement.)

— Lawmakers Consider More Property Tax Breaks For Seniors – SAM DUNKLAU (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those in my precinct, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who want my wife and I to pay more real estate tax. They stress that my wife and I gave up trying to have children, that we did not adopt, and that we did not become foster parents. They stress that I avoided the draft, that I am not a member of a church, that I do not attend church services, and that I do not give money to a church. They hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government grossly overpaid me and that my federal pension and my federal health, dental, and vision insurance subsidies are much too generous. They side with the developer of our subdivision, the City of Wheaton, Milton Township, and DuPage County that argue that our home and the subdivision it was built in never had any defects.)
http://nprillinois.org/post/lawmakers-consider-more-property-tax-breaks-seniors#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic state Senator Laura Murphy of Des Plaines said the cost of owning a home in her suburban district is getting too pricey for older people. “It’s a very common concern of seniors anxious about how they’re gonna remain in their homes,” she said. She wants more seniors to be able to claim a homestead exemption on their property taxes — raising the maximum annual income from $65,000 to $75,000. Another proposal would allow seniors in downstate communities to cut their tax by $7,000, up from the current $5,000. But Carol Portman, president of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, calls that problematic. “By reducing the taxes of those folks a little bit, then you’re raising it for the next door neighbors and the people across the street. Where you draw the line of who gets the benefit and who has to pay the taxes for them, it gets really tough to draw.” Property taxes have become a top political issue in the 2018 elections, from the race for governor on down the ballot.)

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/republican-donors-happy-with-trumps-policy-successes-but-worry-his-demeanor-will-cost-gop-in-the-midterms/article/2647353
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Roskam holds a suburban Chicago district, the sort where educated white women are prevalent. Despite the booming economy, they don’t like Trump. Additionally, the Republican tax bill has been a hard sell in upscale suburban strongholds in blue states that usually vote for Republicans but believe the new law could raise their taxes. “Educated suburban white women have decided that they’re not interested,” DeBlasio said. “People tend to react in a sense they want to protect themselves…Trump doesn’t give people a sense of security, particularly that demographic.”)

DAILY BEAST
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: A Republican hating Democrat says “It’s Still 1965 in Donald Trump’s Mind on Immigration Until Trump, politicians who staked their careers on xenophobia and nativism were losers. Maybe even he is beginning to realize this.” Beyond overwhelmingly, immigrants vote for Democrats. Since 1965, ever-increasingly, Democrats make it clear that they want to use immigrants to get rid of Republicans once and for all.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/its-still-1965-in-donald-trumps-mind-on-immigration

(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are two Americas when it comes to attitudes toward immigration, and the numbers tell the story. In 1960, 5.4 percent were foreign born; in 1970, it was 4.7 percent. Today it’s 13.5 percent. And the newcomers are not spread evenly across the country. Trump lost 16 of the 20 states with the most immigrants, with California the most obvious, and he won 26 of the 30 states with the least number of immigrants. Thanks to incendiary comments by politicians with a vested interest in stoking fears, people in states with the fewest immigrants are the most frightened of what they believe is an “invasion.” Surveys find that people think there are far more immigrants than there actually are, mirroring their belief that government devotes a vast amount of money to foreign aid, when it’s less than 1 percent of the federal budget. The Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, which Ted Kennedy shepherded through the Senate, opened the door to the modern wave of immigrants from around the world. Before that, they came mainly from Northern Europe. Family unification, which Trump derides as “chain migration,” was put in place as a way to insure the flow of largely white and European immigrants would continue. Now that immigrants from other places are the beneficiaries, Trump wants to end it.)

The website — dedicated to helping people with substance abuse — recently conducted a nonscientific, online survey on drugs and church with responses from more than 1,000 people who said they “regularly use drugs.” Among the findings: More than 3 percent of Protestants responding to the survey said they’ve bought “illicit substances at their place of worship.” Roughly one in five Catholics relayed being “high” at mass “at least once.” Catholics and Protestants were found “more likely to have used marijuana” than atheists. But agnostics — those not sure whether there’s a God — reported the most drug use. The stated goal of the survey: raise awareness about the help available for addictions. Another survey is planned on other faiths, including Hinduism, Islam and Judaism.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180114/20k-or-more-to-every-baby-born-in-the-united-states-heres-how-it-would-work
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Under the Baby Bonds proposal, kids of incredibly rich parents such as Beyoncé and Jay-Z would get the lowest amount, $500, while babies born into extremely poor families would get the highest amount, $50,000. There would be a sliding scale to determine how much each baby would receive based on the parents’ wealth. A typical middle-class baby would receive around $20,000. Forget baby showers. There’s a proposal to give every newborn in the United States a “Baby Bond” account with somewhere between $500 to $50,000 in cash. Neither the kids nor their parents would be able to touch the money until the child turned 18. Then the young adult could spend the trust fund on attending college, buying a home or starting a business. The whole point of Baby Bonds would be to dramatically lessen wealth inequality in the United States, according to the economists who came up with the idea, Darrick Hamilton of the New School and William Darity of Duke University.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: A man’s home may be his castle, but even castles are governed these days by zoning codes and other local ordinances. An Illinois man named Greg Schiller had that lesson reinforced after he opened his basement to homeless people, letting them sleep there overnight during the recent deep freeze that enveloped much of the country. No way, said city officials in Elgin, the Chicago suburb where he lives. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Who is to blame for this confusion? Congress. In the conference report that accompanies the new tax law, Congress was explicit in stating that one could not prepay state income taxes — but was silent about property taxes. Lawmakers should have anticipated the IRS concerns and address property tax prepayment. Congress “could have given explicit guidance,” about property taxes Jaffe said. “.. . If they had put that in the bill, everybody would be a happy camper at this point.” Congress “could have given explicit guidance,” Jaffe said. “… If they had put that in the bill, everybody would be a happy camper at this point.” What happens to the extra tens of millions of dollars being collected by the counties? The money will be held in escrow, put in short-term investments with the interest likely apportioned among the local taxing districts.)
