(FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: Downers Grove, Ill. — The Republican 41st Senate District Selection Committee announced today the appointment of John Curran to the Office of State Senator for the 41st Senate District of Illinois. “John Curran will be an excellent State Senator for the 41st District,” said DuPage County GOP Chairman Brian Krajewski. “As the Vice Chairman of the DuPage County Board, John is a strong advocate for fiscal restraint and good government reforms, has deep roots in the community, and knows the pressing issues that southwest suburban residents face.” After interviewing about a dozen candidates, the committee members agreed that Curran is the most qualified person to serve the remainder of Christine Radogno’s term. “We interviewed many outstanding candidates who applied to fill this vacancy,” said Will County GOP Chairman Kathy Havel. “John’s record in support of respectful, responsible, representative government and his extraordinary commitment to constituent service was clear.” Since 2008, Curran has served the 3rd District of the DuPage County Board, where he led the effort to ban the end-of-career pension enhancements that is projected to save taxpayers $28 million. During his public service, he has pushed for transportation infrastructure development and cost-saving public employee reforms. For his professional career, he is a Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney focusing on employment and labor litigation. He also has municipal experience as a former trustee for the Village of Woodridge and is a current resident of Downers Grove. The 41st Senate District is in Cook, DuPage, and Will Counties. The Selection Committee consisted of Chairman Krajewski, Chairwoman Havel, Lyons Township GOP Committeewoman Christine Cook, and Lemont Township GOP Committeeman Howie Ludwig. Also present were Downers Grove Township GOP Chairman Bob Grogan, Lisle Township GOP Chairman Jay Fisher, and Homer Township GOP Chairman Brian Burian.)

NBC5 reported Tuesday that Brad Hahn, who served as Rauner’s communications director, was fired. Both Hahn and the governor’s office did not return messages seeking comment. It was unclear if a replacement had been named. Hahn joined the Rauner administration in December 2016 after serving as chief of staff to former Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger, who is now Rauner’s deputy governor. Catherine Kelly, a spokeswoman for Rauner’s administration, also was fired Tuesday, though she was expected to resign as early as next month, according to the Capitolfax.com website, which covers Illinois state politics. The shake-ups came a day after Rauner tapped Kristina Rasmussen to replace Richard Goldberg as his chief of staff. If one is a professional earning $150,000 per year, then the multimillionaire is rich. And if you are Gov. Rauner who has millions, then Bill Gates is rich. It is all in the point of view. So, let’s be fair. Let’s say the well-off person is from a family that nets after all deductions and itemizations more than $50,000. Then, let’s say the present budget impasse between Michael Madigan and Rauner is on the proposed increase in the Illinois income tax rate. The House, with the help of 15 Republicans, passed Madigan’s bill increasing the state income tax for individuals from 3.75 to 4.9 percent and the corporate tax from 5.25 to 7 percent. We are a broke state. Do we tax more or spend less to get out of debt? That is one of the major differences between the political parties today. Democrats want to tax the rich more and keep programs going. The Republicans want to “lower” everyone’s taxes (mostly theirs) and cut spending everywhere. So, who is right? Rauner wants to redo the worker’s compensation system, something that was fought over forever 50-plus years ago. Rauner wants to cut Medicaid and fees charged by doctors. He wants to leave Illinois taxes low. Remember, not that long ago, we actually paid 5 percent state income tax. Let’s look at who really gets help if we do not raise state taxes. Take a $50,000 family. If the tax stays at 3.75 percent, the family pays $1,875 in Illinois tax. If it goes to 4.9 percent, the family pays $2,450 or $575 more. But if you are in the 20 percent Federal tax bracket and itemize, you save $115 on your Federal tax because your state income tax is another deduction. So, this bill that passed the House cost this family $460. Yet, it is predicted across the state such an increase would bring the state $4.3 billion. The increase in the corporate rate from 5.25 percent to 7 percent would bring in another $460 million. So, the middle income family pays an added $460 per year. Who do you think really pays the balance of the $4.3 billion? The super-rich. The Rauners and the Pritzkers. The very people who want to run the State of Illinois.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Add Illinois to the list of states that are balking at turning over massive amounts of voter data that is normally kept private to a commission chaired by Vice President Mike Pence. In an interview, Ken Menzel, general counsel to the Illinois State Board of Elections, said the board this morning finally received a written request from the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity. The commission says it’s trying to prevent voter fraud; Democrats say it is attempting to drive down voter turnout among progressive voters. The request was mistakenly sent to Secretary of State Jesse White, whose office passed it on to the board. Menzel said the matter will be researched and referred to the board for possible action. But the board doesn’t meet until Aug. 22, Menzel added, so nothing is going to be happening soon. And it’s clear that at least some requested data will not be going to the feds. “They’re certainly not going to get the last four numbers of (each registrant’s) Social Security number,” he said. “We don’t give that out to anybody.” Some other information—the commission asked for past military records, felony convictions and other data—may be possible, Menzel indicated. But even that’s not sure. “This (request) doesn’t fit neatly into what our laws provide.” I’d look for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan to jump into this fray.)

Star-spangled sentiment lingers: 79 percent of the public would describe themselves as patriotic; 92 percent of Republicans and 80 percent of Democrats agree, along with 95 percent of those who voted for President Trump, and 78 percent of those who voted for Hillary Clinton. So says a wide-ranging Economist/YouGov poll conducted during the last week of June. The Republican Party has a little edge here. The poll found that while 46 percent of Americans overall say that both major political parties are “patriotic,” 33 percent cited the GOP and 21 percent the Democratic Party. But what constitutes patriotism? Sixty-nine percent of Americans overall said that someone could criticize Mr. Trump and still be considered patriotic; 61 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Democrats agree with that. Another 68 percent also said that one could criticize former President Barack Obama and still be considered a patriot as well; 75 percent of Republicans and 65 percent of Democrats agree. The public is not so cordial toward people who burn the American flag or refuse to pay their taxes, however. Those acts are among those that garnered much less support as demonstrations of patriotism; just 21 percent would call a flag-burner patriotic.
