GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— The Republican Party exists to promote conservative principles; the Democrat Party exists to promote liberal principles; the Libertarian Party exists to promote libertarian principles; and the Green Party exists to promote green principles. Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform (https://illinois.gop/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/2016PlatformoftheIllinoisRepublicanParty.pdf) is conservative. The Republican Party platform (https://gop.com/platform/) is conservative. I served on the 2008 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee. Disgustingly, outrageously, and unacceptably, the Republican Party, IRP, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Milton Township Republican Central Committee let people hold leadership positions a) who reject many planks in the aforesaid platforms and b) focus on destroying those like me who support the aforesaid platforms. Most commonly, these Democrat Party plants, Libertarian Party plants, Green Party plants, and RINOs reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks. From what I see, they are working very hard to fill the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolution Committee with members who will water down if not strike the aforesaid planks. I have asked my representative on the IRP State Central Committee to appoint me to the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolution Committee. – Dave Diersen

Americans first questioned whether a candidate was too old for the world’s highest office in 1840, with the candidacy of 67-year-old William Henry Harrison. He was 68 when he was inaugurated the nation’s ninth president. Barely a month later, a sudden bout of pneumonia ended his term – and his life. It was 140 years before America elected an older man to the presidency – Ronald Reagan, who was inaugurated at 69 and was 77 when he left office. Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a few years later, but some believe he was showing signs of the disease during his second term as president. And in 2016, Donald Trump was 70 when he took the oath of office, making him the oldest president ever inaugurated. Among the 21 Democratic candidates hoping to challenge Trump in the 2020 election are more in their 60s and 70s than ever before. Two full generations separate the youngest presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg (37), and the oldest, Bernie Sanders (77) and Joe Biden (76). Dr. John Holton, director of the Center for Gerontology at Concordia University, says that rather than asking if a candidate is too old for office, “a better question would be to ask what the characteristics of a bad president are. Would the answer have anything to do with the person’s age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, or experience? Are we confusing our assumptions about maturity with age?” Critics of older candidates say that electing a president in their 60s or 70s can be risky. The nation’s highest office is a physically demanding job that challenges even the fittest person – and there’s no good time for a health crisis when you’re in the Oval Office. Signs of age-related cognitive decline might not become apparent until it’s too late. Holton notes, “In the fishbowl life of a U.S. president, it would be highly unlikely that [cognitive impairment] would go unnoticed or unaddressed by staff and cabinet members.” There is also the consideration of life span. While life spans are longer than they were when the country was young, simple statistics indicate that electing a candidate in their 70s greatly increases the odds they’ll die while in office, but again, Holton points out that each candidate must be judged individually. “No more than 25% of longevity is determined by our genes, which means that 75% is determined by our choices and lifestyle behaviors,” he said. Holton also points out that at the moment, two Supreme Court justices are performing their own demanding jobs into their 80s (to wit: 86-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famously rigorous exercise regimen). Many voters might consider advanced age a sign of experience and wisdom – qualities that presumably anyone would consider positive qualifications for office.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A recent poll is bad news for Biden (76), Sanders (77), and even Trump (72) and very bad news in progress towards stamping out age-bigotry. More voters in a poll don’t want someone over 75 compared to other factors like being black, or gay, or a woman…or even a Muslim. Being a “socialist” is the most undesirable characteristic listed. The NBC/WSJ poll tested 11 different presidential characteristics and there acceptability as a person who is President. The most popular: An African American (a combined 87 percent of all voters say they are “enthusiastic” or “comfortable” with that characteristic), a white man (86 percent), a woman (84 percent), and someone who is gay or lesbian (68 percent — up from 43 percent in 2006). The least popular: a Muslim (49 percent are enthusiastic or comfortable–up from 32 percent in 2015), someone over the age of 75 (37 percent) and a socialist (25 percent).” Those polled may be overstating their tolerance for African Americans and women, they don’t want to look bad to the pollster. But saying being over 75 is an undesirable characteristic is not viewed as bigotry and an act of discriminatory prejudgment is notable. As I wrote in March, why do many Americans view prejudgment based on age legitimate? We don’t see widespread public arguments that Kamala Harris and Cory Booker too black to run? And Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand too female to run? Every hire (and an election is a hiring decision) is a judgement about the potential productivity of a candidate. The relevant questions in every hire is whether a candidate will be engaged and competent for the job at hand? Does the candidate have the knowledge and talent to do the work? Age Discrimination is Harmful The harm of age discrimination on the campaign trail is trivial to the widespread pain and damage which lies beneath the ageism. Though illegal, age discrimination in employment, pay, training and promotion, persists. Ageism makes older workers struggle to get raises and jobs. A recent study indicates employer bias against older workers and muddies the issue about whether someone over 75 is too old to work. A majority of employers surveyed by Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies answered that age 64 was too old to be considered for employment (this was the median age given by employers, though most refused to give an age – wisely, since it’s against the law to consider age in hiring and promotion and pay). On the other hand, the median age that workers gave was too old to work was 75. The workers’ answer still makes it complicated for the candidates over age 75.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the teacher shortage in Illinois has grown to what some say are “crisis” levels, education officials and lawmakers are looking to change the way potential teachers are assessed. One reason for the shortage cited by the education community is the glut of tests required to get a teaching license in Illinois — along with the fact students aren’t passing them at the level they used to. To get a teaching license in Illinois, students need to pass a basic skills test, another test called the edTPA and a content-area test. Of those who took the basic skills test, called the Test of Academic Proficiency, in the first three months of this year, 25 percent passed, according to data on the Illinois State Board of Education’s website. ISBE is putting the TAP on hold starting June 30 as it looks at different ways to assess basic skills. State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is the sponsor of House Bill 423, which would eliminate the test until 2025. Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, introduced a bill, Senate Bill 1952, that would get rid of the basic skills test permanently. Both bills were approved in one chamber earlier this month and await consideration in the other chamber. The Illinois State Board of Education has taken a neutral position on the bills, a lobbyist for the agency said during a recent meeting. As a teacher, Scherer saw many examples of would-be teachers held back by the basic skills test. She linked the difficulties to students’ test anxiety and the poorly written test. The questions, Scherer said, are abstract to the point where students can’t figure out what the questions are asking. There also is an argument the tests are discriminatory toward people of color. Scherer says the tests don’t take life experiences or cultural differences into account. During the first quarter of the year, 12 percent of African-American students and 14 percent of Hispanic students passed the basic skills test.)

According to some reports, a majority of people older than 50 will be involuntarily separated from their jobs at least once. But when it comes to our presidential politics, it’s another matter entirely. President Trump is turning 73 this spring. On the other side of the aisle, the two leading contenders to challenge Trump are Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), 77, and former vice president Joe Biden, 76.
