They became part of Tronc in 2014 after its predecessor, Tribune Publishing, bought the suburban dailies and weeklies from the Sun-Times’ parent, Wrapports. Now, negotiations on a new contract for the 30 editorial employees represented by the Chicago News Guild are scheduled to start next week. It will be the first contract negotiated for the workers since they shifted from Chicago’s no. 2 newspaper operation to the city’s biggest. Tension is already building in advance of the expiration of the current contract at the end of the year. The union today posted a lengthy report of one Evanston Review reporter’s travails with management, and an unfair labor practice charge that was filed by the union last month with the National Labor Relations Board on his behalf. The union alleges the reporter was transferred from one suburban paper to another as retaliation for his complaining about a news story and exercising his contractual right to withhold his byline from the piece. “Within days of him asking to withhold his byline, he was transferred,” says Craig Rosenbaum, who is executive director of the union. Tronc spokeswoman Dana Meyer said it was not retaliation. “The company respects the collective agreement with Pioneer Press and has worked within the terms and conditions of that agreement,” she said in a statement. “There have been incidents where a reporter has asked to have their name removed and we consistently accommodate those requests.
