But demographic changes have also helped Democrats, and in key congressional races they fielded a group of fresh faces, not career politicians. Steel, the GOP committeeman, noted that Democrats raised more money and did a better job registering voters and using social media. The state GOP has debated for years whether the party needs to turn to the political center, or right. As far back as 2007, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warned the party was “dying at the box office” and needed to claim issues usually associated with the Democratic agenda, including climate change and health care reform. Scaremonger Wohl ominously warned, “The Illinois GOP needs unity, not a race to the right.” That’s code language for “Abandon the social issues, you idiot right-wing lunatics!” How about this for a revision: “The Illinois GOP needs unity on the entire GOP platform, not abandonment of the parts of it ignorant RINOs and Libertarians don’t like.” Wohl describes Jeanne Ives‘ candidacy as “undoubtedly the first foray into this impending debacle” of moving the party rightward. Wohl suggests we look at the only kind of Republicans he claims can get elected in Illinois, from “Bruce Rauner to Mark Kirk to Judy Baar Topinka to Jim Edgar.” But why is that? Could it be that people like Wohl and Pat Brady relentlessly tell conservatives that they must sacrifice their beliefs on the altar of party unity, while never telling RINO and Libertarian-leaning Republicans to sacrifice their beliefs on the “social issues” for the sake of unity? (FROM THE ARTICLE: HB40 reared its head in Tuesday’s election. Every incumbent who voted for the controversial measure was reelected, and sponsors of the HB4114 to repeal HB40 were defeated. They are state Reps. Peter Breen, Christine Winger and Sheri Jesiel. Breen’s defeat was particularly shocking. Along with being had been an outspoken opponent of HB40, which repealed the “trigger” language in Illinois stating that the day Roe v. Wade is ever modified or overturned, abortion would be illegal in Illinois with no exceptions. HB40 also removed the restriction on state funding for some abortions. After the bill passed and was signed by the governor, Breen filed suit to dismantle the legislation. Personal PAC, which supports abortion rights, spent more than $300,000 to unseat Breen, “and it was worth every penny,” Terry Cosgrove, president and CEO of Personal PAC told POLITICO, calling it one of the political action committee’s “biggest victories ever.”)
