SUBURBAN LIFE
— DISGUSTING, TRAGIC: Those in Will County affected by war on drugs could see help becoming marijuana entrepreneurs – ALEX ORTIZ (DIERSEN: Wheaton is the DuPage County Seat. The Democrats who run the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (IDCEO) have outrageously designated western Wheaton as being a disproportionately impacted area (DIA), that is, an area that has high rates of arrest, conviction, and incarceration related to cannabis as well as poverty and unemployment. Needless-to-say, that must be a mistake. I ask the following and everyone else who has an interest in Wheaton to ask the IDCEO to immediately rescind its DIA designation: Wheaton Mayor and City Council members, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Milton Township officers and trustees, DuPage County Board Chairman and County Board members, and federal and Illinois officials who represent or seek to represent any part of Wheaton.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The state has designated parts of Will County as “disproportionately impacted” by the war on drugs, which could help local applicants seeking commercial marijuana licenses. Gov. JB Pritzker’s administration released a map of the state this week showing the areas where the state wants to provide opportunities for applicants to benefit from the legalized recreational marijuana industry. The map shows large parts of Joliet, along with smaller parts of Crest Hill, Lockport, Bolingbrook and University Park, as designated areas.)

— Pot Bill Tokes the Line on Public Safety – Tony Perkins
https://patriotpost.us/opinion/65810-pot-bill-tokes-the-line-on-public-safety-2019-10-01
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And yet, last Wednesday, in the U.S. House, more than 300 members of Congress put their names behind a bill that would help legitimize a business that’s destroying and endangering lives. It was the first ever vote on a stand-alone cannabis bill, not that the name would have told you so. The SAFE Banking Act, one of the more ridiculously named pieces of legislation in the Democratic House, would make it easier for marijuana companies to “open checking accounts and get business loans.” Pot companies argue that it would make the entire market safer, since they tend to operate on a “cash-only basis” or pay sky-high fees to the banks who are willing to work with them. Amazingly, 321 members of Congress (including 91 Republicans) fell for this logic, which encourages banks to get involved in the sale of what the federal government still considers an illegal substance.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— With Facebook’s Coming News Tab, Only Some Will Get Paid Social-media giant plans to pay about a quarter of news organizations whose content will be featured – Lukas I. Alpert and Sahil Patel (DIERSEN: GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are worth at least $1,000 a year. GOPUSA ILLINOIS come out each and every morning. https://www.wsj.com/articles/with-facebooks-coming-news-tab-only-some-will-get-paid-11569852600
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The licensing fees Facebook is offering range as high as $3 million a year for national news outlets to several hundred thousand dollars for regional publications, they said. The deals would be for three years. Facebook plans to expand the number of publishers included in the program as the product develops, the people said. The feed will become more customizable and individually targeted, and will eventually include links from Facebook’s local-news project “Today In.” Facebook will highlight only publishers that meet the criteria of its news page index, which requires sites to focus on news reporting and bars those that repeatedly share misinformation and bombard readers with advertising. But the company, which has been accused of bias by conservatives in the past, has been mindful to include a diversity of viewpoints among the outlets that will be featured, one person said. For example, while stories from Infowars won’t be included, stories from Breitbart might appear, this person said. “We’ve been working closely with news organizations to get this right by emphasizing original reporting and making it much easier to find the most relevant news on Facebook,” said Campbell Brown, Facebook’s vice president of global news partnerships. Headlines appearing in Facebook’s news section will be chosen in some cases by a team of editors and in others by the company’s algorithm, people familiar with the matter said. The “Top News” section, which will feature about 10 headlines, will be entirely curated by human editors. News in subsections, such as sports or entertainment, and a “suggested for you” section, will be selected by algorithm. The feed won’t include any advertising and all stories will direct readers to the publishers’ own websites, the people said. Facebook’s curators will use a detailed list of criteria for which stories to highlight, including promoting outlets that were the first to report the news, the people said. Stories with named sources might also be given priority to those that rely on anonymous sources. Facebook is looking to expand its team of curators to about 25 people, with some based in London, to work under Anne Kornblut, a Pulitzer Prize winner who joined Facebook in 2015 after stints at the Washington Post, New York Times and Boston Globe, the people said.)
— Facebook to Exempt Opinion and Satire From Fact-Checking – Jeff Horwitz (DIERSEN: What qualifications do my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have to be fact checkers? While I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $98,198-$127,654, I increasingly worked as a referencer, that is, as a fact checker. That work required assuring the accuracy and support for each and every word, number, table, graph, chart, conclusion, opinion, and recommendation in GAO reports. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,279-$93,592. Barton was stunned by the test results and still has trouble believing the over-the-counter product could have caused the positive reading. Many pharmacology experts aren’t surprised some people are failing drug screenings after using certain CBD products because THC can build up in your system. The compound is found in both cannabis plants: hemp and marijuana. CBD taken from hemp should have 0.3% or less of THC, the psychoactive chemical that causes a mind-altering effect. THC is among the drugs screened for by some companies. It’s not permitted for certain employees, including those who drive big rigs and school buses.)

The rate would start at 1% per year and rise to 8% for married couples with assets of least $10 billion. That 8% rate would mean that megabillionaires who don’t earn at least an 8% return would see their fortunes shrink, and Mr. Sanders said Tuesday that there should be no billionaires.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The political headlines have been relentless lately. Calls for impeaching the President. Debates over health care, immigration and gun control. Fights over who tweeted what. Discussions of these issues can quickly get heated and toxic. They can affect relationships and even your health, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. It seems that Americans “are suffering some pretty negative consequences because of their attention to and engagement in politics,” says author Kevin Smith, a political scientist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, discussing the survey results. . .Nearly 40% of respondents said that politics was a cause of stress in their lives. About 20% reported losing sleep, feeling fatigued, or being depressed due to politics. Between 10% and 30% of the respondents said that politics took an emotional toll on them, by causing anger, frustration, hate,or guilt, or caused them to make comments they later regretted. And about 20% reported that politics had damaged their friendships. And, says Smith, “16% say that politics has made my home life less pleasant.” . . . In 2017, the APA annual survey on stress levels of Americans found that 57% of respondents said that they were stressed by the current political climate, whereas 63% said that the future of the nation was a cause of stress for them. Sixty percent said they thought that the country was its lowest point in history. And over half of the respondents said that while they like to stay informed about news and politics, doing so stresses them out. . .For now, Bufka says, the new study suggests that political engagement comes at an emotional cost. And that in turn could affect politics. “In a democracy, it’s really important that people want to be engaged,” she says. “It would be really discouraging if people felt [so] stressed and negatively impacted by the political discourse of the day, that … they disengage from politics.”)

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/462705-consequential-gop-class-of-1994-all-but-disappears
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twenty-five years ago Friday, 367 Republicans running for Congress lined up on the Capitol steps on a clear September day weeks before the midterm elections to sign the Contract with America. . .When the lawmakers signed Gingrich’s contract, Republicans had no experience running the legislative branch. The last Republican Speaker of the House, Joseph Martin, had died 26 years before Gingrich took control. Gingrich pledged that a new way of business was coming to Washington, seizing power from committee chairmen who had never held a gavel themselves and making himself the most powerful Speaker in generations, a trend his successors have followed. Gingrich “was making all sorts of proclamations, and he was saying the presidency didn’t really matter. For a moment or two, we thought he might be right,” said Pat Griffin, Clinton’s director of legislative affairs at the time. “We were feeling terribly depressed, everybody was pointing fingers at everyone else.” For the next two years, the new Republican majority forced Democrats and the Clinton White House to react to their agenda. Clinton, his reelection hopes suddenly in doubt, moved to compromise with Republicans where he could and set himself apart from an increasingly unpopular Congress — including his own party — where possible.)
