While area cities work to clear streets, alleys, and parking lots of snow and ice, it is the responsibility of property owners and tenants to clear their sidewalks and driveways of snow and ice, which can be a backbreaking chore. According to the CDC slips on ice and snow account for a million injuries each year. “If you’re somebody with a heart condition or an exercise intolerance that you can shuffle because that can the cardiac can definitely be involved there. From a physical therapy standpoint, though, we see shoulder injuries, knee injuries and then falls are a huge thing too. Once you get that first layer of snow shoveled off it tends to be really slippery underneath there,” said Jordan Gillund, Manager of Outpatient Physical Therapy, Genesis Health System. Gillund says that snow shoveling is pretty similar to a gym workout, so it’s important to prepare for it. This includes dressing properly, stretching and warming up your joints, pacing yourself, drinking plenty of water and taking breaks whenever you can. Despite the rush to clear snow before the plow comes, he says it’s important to recognize the toll it takes on the body. “A lot of times, we have people who are bending from the waist bending with their back and not from their knees when lifting, especially when it’s heavy snow, like it is today. We always tell people to keep your back straight, then with your knees.
