HINSDALE PATCH
— Feds Sue Hinsdale Over Fair Housing Village’s effort to close sober living house violates Fair House Act, feds say. – David Giuliani (DIERSEN: Questions to ask City Council candidates: If elected, would you encourage or discourage the following: putting addiction centers in residential neighborhoods, reparations, BLM, LGBTQ, dependency on government, dependency on charity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, more gun controls, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and/or age discrimination?)
https://patch.com/illinois/hinsdale/feds-sue-hinsdale-over-fair-housing
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hinsdale is facing a powerful adversary in its effort to close a house that helps men with addictions — the U.S. Justice Department. On Tuesday, the federal government sued Hinsdale, one of Chicago’s wealthiest suburbs, and alleged the village violated the Fair Housing Act in its handling of the sober living house. Reached by phone, Village President Tom Cauley, who is mentioned frequently in the lawsuit, declined to comment, but would not say why. In July 2019, the Trinity Sober Living House opened at 111 N. Grant St. Neighbors started complaining before it opened. Last August, the village called for the house’s closure. Officials said the sober living house was a commercial operation in a residential neighborhood. The village also argued that with 10 people, the house violated the village’s rule for single-family zones — no more than three unrelated people in a house. After finding out earlier this month that a federal lawsuit would be filed, village officials dropped the argument about the house being a commercial operation, the lawsuit said. But it stuck to its ban on more than three unrelated people in a house. According to the lawsuit, on July 13, 2019, a Hinsdale resident emailed Cauley about the plan for the sober living house. The resident said neighbors were “very worried” about “having people with these issues living as a group in our neighborhood. Any restrictions on this within proximity to Monroe Elementary?” Neighbors also approached Michael Owens, the house’s founder. One accused Owens of bringing “alcoholics, drug addicts and pedophiles into our neighborhood.” Amid the uproar, Cauley wrote Owens on July 18, saying it had come to his attention that Trinity bought the property and intended to use it for 10 unrelated people. Cauley, an attorney, called it a “prohibited use,” but did not refer Owens to the “reasonable accommodation” process under the Fair Housing Act, the lawsuit said. Owens asked to meet with Cauley, but got no response. Instead, he had a July 30, 2019, meeting with the village’s attorney, Lance Malina, and two other top village officials. He gave them a tour of the house and told them the house would not admit sex offenders. At the close of the meeting, Malina told Owens about the reasonable accommodation process, which is intended for groups with disabilities, including those with addictions. In a later email, Owens asked whether he could have up to three residents in the meantime. Malina said he could not because the house was being marketed commercially. Days later, the village held a meeting of Hinsdale residents to share what officials were doing about the sober living house. Trinity was not invited, according to the lawsuit. Shortly after, Cauley sent a letter addressed “Dear Residents,” stating the village saw the sober living house as a prohibited use. The letter was not sent to Trinity, which learned about it more than a month later, according to the lawsuit. On Aug. 7, Trinity’s attorney, Steve Polin, sent a letter seeking a reasonable accommodation for the house under the Fair Housing Act. Contrary to the village’s practice, the administration did not forward the reasonable accommodation request to the Village Board, the lawsuit said. Instead, the next day, the village sued Trinity in DuPage County Court. As part of that litigation, a judge in June eliminated the limit on people in the house, citing the federal investigation, which Patch had written about. According to the lawsuit, Hinsdale’s argument that Trinity was a commercial operation and thus prohibited would essentially ban all group homes for people with disabilities. “This is because, for most group homes, the residents pay rent, the agency operating the group home receives compensation for the care and services being provided, most residents must attend employment or day services programs during the day, and residents are monitored by the provider agency.” Even under the village’s new position, the lawsuit said, only the smallest group homes would be allowed. During the county court proceedings, the village did not inform the judge that it received or intended to consider a reasonable accommodation request, according to the federal lawsuit. In a September 2019 interview, Village President Tom Cauley told the Hinsdalean that the village’s effort involved no fair housing violations. Trinity is in a zone where no more than three unrelated people can live in a house. Cauley told the Hinsdalean that “if we had 10 nuns living there, we would have a problem under the zoning code.” The village’s attorney, Malina, did not return a call for comment.)

In mid-2019, Epstein testified before Congress, and the substance of his testimony lent support to what every fair-minded person who’s ever done a politics-related Google search has long suspected: “Data I’ve collected since 2016 show that Google displays content to the American public that is biased in favor of one political party — a party I happen to like, but that’s irrelevant. … Democracy as originally conceived, cannot survive Big Tech as currently empowered.” Too bad no one on Capitol Hill took him seriously.)

My critics/opponents stress that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRO webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc.)
https://thetechportal.com/2020/11/25/twitter-to-start-providing-verification-badges-to-authentic-accounts-from-early-2021-asks-for-public-feedback-on-policy/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Twitter has announced that it will start its account reverification process once again in 2021, providing ‘blue checks’ to users. In 2017, Twitter had ceased providing verification badges to its account holders, even if they were genuinely noteworthy and a public figure. The decision was taken surrounding an incident in which the social media giant had verified an account belonging to Jason Keller, a white supremacist who organized a rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. As a result of this the company had to face a wave of criticism. It defended itself by making its policies more public, saying that the company provided blue verification badges to anyone of “public interest”. However, critics still mauled this move, saying that while genuine figures of public interest were on wait to get their accounts verified, verifying the account of a white supremacist was not something that should be of public interest. Therefore, in November 2017, Twitter ceased its action of verifying accounts on its platform. A year later, the social media platform informed that it was putting its work on the verification of accounts on indefinite hold. This time it said that this decision is being taken so that the company could direct its resources and focus on the integrity of the upcoming 2020 US elections.)

BUZZFEED NEWS
— 1 In 3 Americans Didn’t Vote. Should We Force Them To Next Time? Advocates for compulsory voting in the US are looking for a state to be an electoral guinea pig. They said forcing everyone to vote would fix a lot of problems. – Julia Reinstein (DIERSEN: How informed are the following about government and political news and commentary: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the leaders of your Republican township/ward party organization, the leaders of your Republican county party organization, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee, the IRP officers, and Republican candidates on ballots in your precinct?)
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/juliareinstein/us-compulsory-voting-mandatory
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But it could also help people become more informed voters, said Rapoport, the former Connecticut secretary of state. “If you’re a principal of a high school or a superintendent, and every 18-year-old was required to vote, would that make you more likely to do civic education as part of the curriculum? I think it would,” said Rapoport. “If you’re an employer, and every one of your employees was required to vote, would that make you likely to give them time off to participate? I think it would.” This hints at one of the most common objections to compulsory voting: the rather crass assumption that nonvoters are uneducated and ill-informed on politics, and therefore are better off not voting. Nelson of the NAACP LDF unequivocally rejected that argument, calling it “fully disingenuous.” “If people were truly concerned about people voting who aren’t educated, their focus should be on education and not the right to vote,” said Nelson.)

Better yet, I should sue them. I would focus on a) present and past leaders of the Milton Township Republican Organization, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Illinois Republican Party, Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, Illinois, TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, Illinois Center Right Coalition, and American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter, b) Republican candidates on ballots in my precinct since 2000, and c) those who I have sued.)
https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2020/04/01/americans-main-sources-for-political-news-vary-by-party-and-age/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Americans turn to a wide range of media outlets for political and election news, but two stand out as especially common sources. In a late 2019 survey conducted as part of Pew Research Center’s Election News Pathways project, Fox News and CNN were named by the largest segments of U.S. adults as their main political news source – 16% and 12%, respectively. Six other news outlets – NPR, NBC News, ABC News, MSNBC, CBS News and The New York Times – were named by at least 2% of adults. The sources named by the remaining 51% of U.S. adults resulted in a long tail of more than 50 other individual brands. . .In addition to asking respondents whether they got political and election news in the past week from each of 30 different sources (selected to represent a range of news media across different platforms), respondents were asked in an open-ended question to write in the one main source they rely on most for this news. Researchers grouped responses together by brand: For example, “NY Times,” “NYT” and “nytimes.com” were all counted as indicating The New York Times. In all, about half (49%) of U.S. adults named one of these eight outlets as their main source for political and election news. The long list of all other individual outlets, named by fewer than 2% of respondents, included larger sources like The Washington Post, the BBC and Rush Limbaugh, as well as more niche sources such as One America News, The Young Turks and individual local newspapers. Some of the remaining respondents named social media sites (4% in total) or a medium without any specific outlet specified (“radio,” “the internet”). Finally, 13% of respondents declined to provide a recognizable news outlet, left the field blank or said they didn’t remember the name of their main news source. You can see a longer list of sources that were mentioned here. Partisanship in Americans’ main sources for political news Partisan alignment emerges in several of the most commonly named main sources for political and election news. Four of the eight sources named by at least 2% of U.S. adults are much more likely to be named by Democrats and independents who lean Democratic than by Republicans and GOP leaners: MSNBC, The New York Times, NPR and CNN. Fox News is the one outlet among these eight that is far more likely to be named by Republicans than by Democrats. Those who name Fox News and MSNBC display roughly the same high levels of partisanship. About nine-in-ten of those whose main source is Fox News (93%) identify as Republican, very close to the 95% of those who name MSNBC and identify as Democrats. Similarly, about nine-in-ten of those who name The New York Times (91%) and NPR (87%) as their main political news source identify as Democrats, with CNN at about eight-in-ten (79%). The three major broadcast news networks – ABC, CBS and NBC – have more of a mix of Democrats and Republicans among those who name these outlets as their main sources for political news. For example, the makeup of those who name NBC News as their main source is 57% Democratic versus 38% Republican.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But Grogan says he’s undecided as to whether he’ll seek a recount of the ballots cast in the Nov. 3 election. He must wait until after the numbers are certified Tuesday, Nov. 24, before he can make the request. According to the most recent count, Downers Grove Democrat White had 233,121 votes, or 50.01% of the vote, to Grogan’s 233,046. Grogan, a Republican, is seeking his fourth term. County election judges processed and tabulated an additional 3,292 mail and provisional ballots Tuesday, DuPage County Clerk Jean Kaczmarek said in a news release. DuPage County voter turnout was at 75%, with more than 491,000 votes tabulated — 118,000-plus cast on Election Day, 190,000-plus cast at early voting places and nearly 180,000 sent in by mail, she said. Grogan said Thursday he is considering a possible discovery recount, which would look at up to 25% of precincts to determine if there are any irregularities. “I haven’t finalized it yet but honestly, anything dealing with big numbers — whether it’s processing checks here (at the auditor’s office) or counting votes — there’s always an error rate,” he said. . .Gains made by Democrats in DuPage reflect a “political transition” in the historically Republican county, possibly the result of changing demographics or this year a Trump backlash, White said. “(The county auditor race) is not an outlier. It’s part of a pattern that was repeated throughout DuPage County,” he said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Millions of Americans who are working full-time jobs still rely on federal health care and food assistance programs because of low wages, a bipartisan congressional watchdog says. A report from the Government Accountability Office found that about 70% of adult workers participating in Medicaid, which provides health care to low-income Americans, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food stamps, are working full time. The report was requested by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, who said its findings show an urgent need to raise the federal minimum wage. “At a time when huge corporations like Walmart and McDonald’s are making billions in profits and giving their CEOs tens of millions of dollars a year, they’re relying on corporate welfare from the federal government by paying their workers starvation wages.,” Sanders said in a statement. “This is morally obscene.” He said it was long past time to increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15.)

DUPAGE COUNTY ELECTION DIVISION
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: BEYOND DISGUSTING, BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: According to DuPage County Election Division results, as of November 17, 2020, 6:53:41 PM, for County Auditor, Democrat William ‘Bill’ White had 233,121 (50.01%) votes and Republican Bob Grogan had 233,046 (49.99%) votes. The main reason why Republican candidates in DuPage County lost in this election and in the one 2 years ago and 4 years ago was voters voting for Democrats to punish Trump. The second reason was the Democrat invasion of DuPage County. – Dave Diersen

DAILY HERALD
— OCTOBER 30, 2020 FLASHBACK: Experience an issue in DuPage County auditor race – Scott C. Morgan (DIERSEN: The Daily Herald endorsed Grogan.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20201030/experience-an-issue-in-dupage-county-auditor-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Grogan, who has been the county auditor for 12 years, touts both his earlier career as a licensed CPA and his office’s record of innovation. Grogan was the first Illinois auditor to implement an online county checkbook, which allows the public to search and view expenditures. Grogan also emphasizes his creation of an audit hotline, which allows taxpayers to submit reports of fraud, waste or misuse of county resources. “I think that the people of DuPage County will recognize the good work that I started off doing when I first came into office and that I’m continuing to do,” Grogan said during a recent endorsement interview. “I think I’ve operated in this position with integrity and with a very high level of skills and output. “White, meanwhile, says he believes DuPage is at a “political crossroads” and might be aligning more with the Democrats. He hopes to be a part of any potential change. “It’s very well established in the private sector that rotating auditors is simply the sensible thing to do,” White said. “Bringing in a fresh pair of eyes is just inherently good.” White is an attorney who has served on the Downers Grove Village Council and the Community High School District 99 school board. White has also served on the zoning board of appeals in Downers Grove and Woodridge. “I have a track record of getting the Democrats and Republicans to work together,” said White about his time in local government. “My goal as auditor will be to facilitate good government, which I define as transparent.”)
— SEPTEMBER 30, 2020 FLASHBACK: Endorsement: Bob Grogan for DuPage County auditor (DIERSEN: By far, Grogan is the best qualified for the job. Like me, he passed the CPA examination on his first attempt, but his scores on each of the four parts of the examination were much higher than mine. Like me, he is a Certified Fraud Examiner, but he passed the examination on his first attempt while I “grandfathered” in. Grogan is a licensed CPA; I became a licensed CPA in 1981. White is not a Certified Internal Auditor, Certified Government Financial Manager, Certified Financial Services Auditor, or Forensic Accountant, but I am. White does not have auditing experience. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $101,176-$131,532/year. I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 Levels, currently $85,084-$96,431/year.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20200930/endorsement-bob-grogan-for-dupage-county-auditor
(FROM THE ENDORSEMENT: During his three terms as DuPage County auditor, Bob Grogan has regularly looked to innovate. The Downers Grove Republican was the first auditor in Illinois to put a county checkbook online. He also was the first to create a transparency portal and an audit hotline. . .While White is well-versed in the duties of the office, we can’t ignore Grogan’s record and credentials. As a licensed CPA and certified fraud examiner, Grogan has the skill and experience to find waste and fraud in county government. Findings made by the auditor’s office during Grogan’s tenure have resulted in savings, firings and, most recently, federal charges against the Bloomingdale Township highway commissioner. Grogan is endorsed.)

In 1978, my wife and I could afford to buy a home in Wheaton, but we could not have afforded to buy that home if it had been in a more expensive municipality, township, or county. In 1984, my wife and I could afford to have a new home built in Wheaton, but we could not have afforded to have that home built in a more expensive municipality, township, or county. Since 1972, when I bought a new town home in University Park, my critics/opponents have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that because of discrimination against minorities and because of discrimination against females, if I had been a minority or a female, I would not have been able to buy that town home. The down payment for that town home came from what I had earned and saved a) working for IRS in Harvey for the prior 9 months and in Chicago for 6 months before that and b) working for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights for the prior 18 months part-time and for 7 months before that full-time. That money also enabled me to a) buy a new Corvette in 1971 and b) pay tuition for graduate business courses at Loyola. Firestone hired me in 1970 because it could not find a qualified minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. In 1971, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that Oldsmobile had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in a) Firestone Stores firing me from full-time employment and b) my accepting a job offer from IRS. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. My wife and I bought a home in Wheaton in 1978. The down payment came from what she had earned and saved working for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions the prior 8 years and for the FBI for the 2 years before that. My wife and I had a home built in Wheaton in 1984. The down payment came from the sale of our Wheaton home and my University Park town home which I had rented out since 1976. By then, my wife had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions for 14 years and I had worked for GAO for more than 4 years and for IRS for almost 9 years before that.)

Even the National Association of Realtors maintained that “now is not the time” to change a policy that could hinder progress against institutional racism in housing.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— AUGUST 16, 2012 FLASHBACK: A bunch of political info — daily – Bernard Schoenburg
https://www.sj-r.com/x1782330063/Bernard-Schoenburg-A-bunch-of-political-info-daily
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. There are lots of websites that compile political news, and I think it’s time I share one that I find quite interesting. It’s at www.gopillinois.com , and, as you can tell by its address, it has a Republican flavor. That is an understatement reinforced with the comments added by the compiler himself — DAVID DIERSEN of Wheaton. He introduced a recent UPI story about Republicans’ views on the drought and wildfires by saying: “Democrats blame everything bad, including bad weather, on Republicans, especially on Republicans who are conservative, White, male, older, non-poor and non-veteran.” And talking of a New York Times article about a photographer arrested while on assignment in the Bronx, Diersen wrote that since 2000, he has been thrown out of, barred from, or not advised of news conferences “by Democrats, Democrat plants, RINOs (Republicans in name only), their operatives, and their dupes.” Thus, if you don’t want to read some very pointed comments, you may not want to go to gopillinois.com. But you would be missing a treasure of links to the day’s news and opinion. Diersen, 63, is a retired federal employee who became the Illinois editor of a national GOP website in 2000, and since 2004 has put out his own Illinois compilation every day. There’s usually about 50 articles daily, he says. He’s generally up by 3 a.m. He says he spends at least 10 hours a day on this passion of his, with no pay, and has put out links to more than 117,000 articles. As his comments above hinted, party regulars don’t always greet his work with relish. He includes dissident voices within the GOP tent, and some whose credibility is questionable. But he puts it all out there. He’s a GOP precinct committeeman, and he believes in people having information. He also wants to help elect Republican candidates who “will defend and advance the party’s platform.” The site makes available plenty of Diersen history, too, including how his “liberal Democrat superiors,” in his view, forced him to take early retirement at 49 from the U.S. General Accounting Office, “because of his opposition to race and gender based preference and his participation in a class action lawsuit” on that subject. He wouldn’t mind my telling you that he also passed his CPA and Certified Internal Auditor exams on first attempts more than three decades ago. Agree or disagree with him, but Diersen provides a bunch of interesting information — every day.)

Finke has worked at the SJ-R since the 1970s; Schoenburg’s first byline appeared in the paper in 1990. https://freebeacon.com/coronavirus/conservative-journalist-successfully-sues-state-of-minnesota-for-access-to-coronavirus-briefings/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A conservative journalist barred from Minnesota‘s daily coronavirus briefings successfully sued the state to regain access. In a settlement signed Friday, Minnesota’s Department of Health agreed to reinstate PowerLine cofounder Scott Johnson’s access to the state’s COVID-19 Conference Line “as long as and whenever” the department holds a briefing. Johnson sued the Department of Public Health when he was barred from their conference line in May without explanation. Johnson had until then participated in the calls and posed questions skeptical of Democratic governor Tim Walz’s approach to combating the coronavirus. Health department officials also stopped responding to Johnson’s written inquiries. Those officials told the Washington Free Beacon that the briefings were limited to “professional journalists,” but did not offer a definition of the term. In his lawsuit, Johnson argued that the state had discriminated against him on the basis of political ideology and demanded to be included in the briefings. The Minnesota Department of Public Health declined to comment on the settlement agreement. Johnson has been critical of the state’s handling of the pandemic, challenging Walz’s decision to keep the state shut down in April given that, at the time, more than 80 percent of Minnesota‘s coronavirus deaths occurred in nursing homes and residential care facilities. That number dipped to more than 70 percent as of mid-October, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Johnson, a retired attorney and accredited reporter, argued that his exclusion constituted “an ongoing deprivation … [of his] First Amendment rights under the United States Constitution.” Friday’s settlement acknowledges his exclusion from the briefings and guarantees him immediate access: Health department communications director Michael Schommer is required under the agreement to answer up to three of Johnson’s pandemic-related questions per week.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican leaders are increasingly alarmed about the party’s ability to stave off Democratic challengers in Georgia’s two Senate runoff elections — and they privately described President Trump on a recent conference call as a political burden who despite his false claims of victory was the likely loser of the 2020 election. . .Some on the call expressed particular concern about Georgia’s fast-changing electorate, driven by the increasingly liberal metro Atlanta region and the push by 2018 gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams to register more Democratic voters, especially in the state’s communities of color. Democrats hope that the candidate challenging Loeffler in the runoff, the Rev. Raphael Warnock — the pastor at Atlanta’s iconic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. once preached — will help energize Black voters. Perdue, elected in 2014, faces Democrat Jon Ossoff, a documentary filmmaker running his first statewide race. “They changed, dramatically, the face of the electorate in Georgia. Many of these new voters are from California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and they’re not of the conservative persuasion,” Perdue said on the call.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The presence of Trump loyalists in positions across the government has also had an effect on the jobs themselves. Rather than blacklist people for their affiliation alone, one Democratic congressional staffer who asked to remain anonymous told Newsweek that former administration officials should be judged based on their performance, which the staffer said often came second to ideology. “There are many appointees who were hired, promoted, or retained because of their loyalty to Trump and Trumpism,” the staffer said. “Many of these people actively harmed the very people and institutions they were charged with serving. They engaged in or were complicit in tremendous cruelty. Those are the reasons not to hire someone.” The staffer said this standard should apply to those who left office early as well, such as former Defense Secretary James Mattis, who has been critical of the commander-in-chief he served, but has not apologized for having implemented some of his controversial policies.)

https://onenewsnow.com/politics-govt/2020/11/13/eyeing-a-white-house-win-angry-left-vows-to-purge-nazis-in-name-of-unity
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump insisted more than once the “Resistance” movement that attempted to stop his presidency was really attacking American voters who put him in the White House, and now the Kristallnacht-like Resistance has proven him right. Bolstered by Joe Biden’s expected win over Trump, the so-called Resistance movement of Democrats and “Never Trump” Republicans is blatantly calling for Trump supporters to be punished if they voted for him and put out a yard sign, cheered for him and defended his policies, or served in his administration. “Shunning, shaming these people is a statement of moral indignation,” Jennifer Rubin, the Washington Post columnist, suggested on MSNBC over the weekend, “that these people are not fit for polite society.” Rubin made those comments (see video below) after reminding the cable news network she had cheered when then-press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was run out of a Washington, D.C. restaurant. That incident dates back to 2018 and it appears Rubin, the Post’s supposedly conservative reporter, has no regrets about punishing political enemies two years later. “It’s not only that Trump has to lose,” she further stated, “but that all his enablers have to lose.” From ‘reconciliation’ to ‘accountability’ Even before Election Day, Berkeley economics professor Robert Reich raised eyebrows when he suggested via Twitter there should be a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission” if Trump loses re-election. What would such a commission do? “It would erase Trump’s lies, comfort those who have been harmed by his hatefulness,” he wrote, “and name every official, politician, executive, and media mogul whose greed and cowardice enabled this catastrophe.” When fellow Twitter users pushed back on the suggestion, Reich, who served as labor secretary for Bill Clinton, scoffed at warnings his idea was “undemocratic.” Then came Election Day. Democrats not only celebrated a projected win for Joe Biden but predicted an angry, crying Donald Trump would be marched out of the White House and his Hitler-endorsing, white supremacist minions should be punished, too. But there needs to be a record, right? The history of despotic regimes has shown The Right Thinkers have to take names, and document wrongdoing, in order to punish The Wrong Thinkers. One self-described revolutionary who was thinking ahead was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the socialist lawmaker. She asked via Twitter is anyone was “archiving these Trump sycophants for when they try to downplay or deny their complicity in the future.” Yes, infact, some people were doing just that. Just three days after Election Day, the Trump Accountability Project was born with the motto, “Remember what they did.” The group, founded by staffers associated with Pete Buttigieg, vowed to “not allow the following groups of people profit from their experience: Those who elected him. Those who staffed his government. Those who funded him.” CNN: No more ‘Kristallnacht’ Following on the heels of vows to punish Trump and his supporters, CNN reminded its viewers this week that Nov. 9 marked the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the “Night of Broken Glass” in 1938. On that night, Nazi Party members torched Jewish homes and schools, vandalized synagogues, and arrested approximately 30,000 Jews and marched them off to concentration camps. Another 100 Jews were killed. The horrors or Kristallnacht, CNN’s anchor Christiane Amanpour opined, included an attack on “facts, knowledge, history and truth” when the Nazis tossed thousands of books into the fire. “After four years of a modern-day assault on those same values by Donald Trump,” Amanpour summarized, “the Biden-Harris team pledges a return to normal.” For supporters of Donald Trump, who are not Nazis and don’t know one, the obvious question is: What in the world is going on? According to psychiatrist Dr. Karl Benzio, it boils down to emotions detached from reality, which Trump supporters have named Trump Derangement Syndrome for the bizarre, unhinged behavior of the Left. “The definition of psychosis is when somebody isn’t able differentiate reality from non-reality,” Dr. Benzio tells OneNewsNow. “The definition of delusion is a fixed, false belief.” A human being’s emotional volume is always competing with our rational volume, Dr. Benzio says, like when a rabid sports fan reacts angrily when their beloved team fails to reach the end zone or, worse, loses the game and the grief-stricken fan fails to cope with the loss. In the case of President Trump, he is the opposing team that “stole” the game from the home team — then dances in the end zone to rub it in. When the trolling, counter-punching commander in chief posts a sarcastic tweet, or drops a new nickname for a politician beloved by Democrats, Benzio says, it only makes his enemies angrier. And now those angry enemies, who likely won the game on Election Day, are plotting revenge.)

In today’s dollars, my GAO salary was $131,532/year, but my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $54,168/year, or 59% less. My wife and I have responded to this by spending less.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: You won’t know what kind of retirement lifestyle you can afford until you know what your retirement income will be. . .Will those accumulated assets last? Will you spend only the interest they earn, or will you dip into your principal? With interest rates historically low, will you invest those funds? If so, what if markets fluctuate (as they do about 100% of the time!). Could a prolonged economic downturn cause you to run out of money? Or will you get scared and simply reduce your lifestyle – no more vacations, no helping the kids, fewer trips to see the grandkids… We’re back to what are you planning to retire to? Is it the lifestyle you want…or the lifestyle you can afford?)

With media companies closing their Statehouse bureaus and reallocating reporting resources, the number of journalists based in the Capitol has dwindled significantly. The Illinois Press Foundation has created Capitol News Illinois to provide media outlets with state government coverage that news consumers can trust. We believe having an engaged and informed public is essential to our state’s success. So, too, is having a government that’s held accountable by their constituents. Our goal is to increase news consumers’ awareness, interest and participation in state government; to grow the size of the Capitol News Illinois newsroom through additional donations and funding, and to encourage newspapers and media groups in Illinois to devote additional resources to reporting from the Statehouse.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Republicans are fuming that the Illinois Supreme Court has replaced Justice Thomas Kilbride, who lost his retention race last week, with a Democratic ally, saying the judicial maneuver is a slap in the face to voters. Justices voted 6-0 to name Appellate Judge Robert Carter to the bench as a placeholder until an election is held in two years. Carter is 74 and says he won’t run. “This is an outrageous decision,” Jon Zahm, who heads the Vote No for Kilbride committee, posted on Facebook. “The voters made clear they did not want politics as usual on the Supreme Court, as they voted an end to the 4-3 Democrat stranglehold on blocking important issues like fair maps, pension reform, lawsuit reform, and term limits.” Zahm said the three Republican justices “should have voted no and left the seat unfilled until the next election.” The hand-wringing over Kilbride’s replacement comes after Zahm and other Republicans waged a fierce battle to remake the highest court. They say Kilbride is beholden to Madigan and they point to an opinion he wrote that removed a referendum on the 2016 ballot that would have taken away Madigan’s power on redistricting. The House speaker donated $550,000 to Kilbride’s campaign to stay on the bench — he won 56 percent of the vote but needed 60 percent to keep his seat. Former 3rd District Appellate Court Judge Kent Slater, a Republican, told the Tribune’s Ray Long that Carter had been Kilbride’s choice to hold an appointed seat on the appellate for several years. “It’s like the Supreme Court’s patronage,” Slater said. – Shia Kapos

— OCTOBER 13, 2020 FLASHBACK: A group of Democratic south suburban mayors and elected officials have filed suit against the Democratic Bloom Township committeeman, Lori Wilcox, because of her plan to hold an in-person, candidate slating caucus in December rather than an open, spring primary for the 2021 municipal and township elections. Given the caucus typically draws 300 to 400 people in the same room, such a meeting would violate the governor’s executive order on large gatherings. The mayors group is concerned about a “super spreader event” if Wilcox’s planned candidate slating caucus moves forward. The emergency motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction filed by the Del Galdo Law Group will be heard Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Wilcox told Playbook she had not yet seen the lawsuit and declined to comment. – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: What is the status of this?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: America’s political divisions are also economic divisions – and they are widening. That’s one message that comes through in the visual story-telling from our graphics team, published today, which shows how Republicans and Democrats are increasingly divided by the education levels, racial diversity and the amount of urban or rural character to their communities. Now, the Brookings Institution adds to the finding of a growing divide between metropolitan and non-metropolitan America. Joe Biden last week won 16% of the nation’s counties, but those counties account for 70% of nation’s economic activity, Brookings analysts report. By contrast, President Trump won 84% of counties, accounting for less than 30% of GDP. Their work shows an increasing divide between a high-output, Democratic-leaning part of the nation and a lower-output, Republican-leaning set of communities. In 2016, Brookings analysts found, Democrat Hillary Clinton won counties accounting for 64% of economic output, compared with Mr. Biden’s 70% share. Mr. Trump in 2016 won counties accounting for 36% of economic output, compared with his share of under 30% this year. That finding adds new data to a trend that the Journal also documented last year, showing that the two parties, in many ways, live in two different economies.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The electoral blue wave predicted by political scientists might have fizzled in much of the U.S., but on Tuesday it drenched a corner of the Chicago area that, not long ago, was practically untouched by Democrats. DuPage County, once known as one of the most solidly Republican areas in the country, appears to have given Democrats control of the County Board for the first time since the 1930s. Two more Democrats are leading their races for countywide office, and could be joined by another when the final votes are tallied. DuPage voters also backed Democrats in every federal race from president to U.S. representative, as well as every state senator and nine of 13 state representatives. It’s a stunning turn of fortune two decades in the making, observers say, the result of shifting demographics, shrewd campaigning and the divisive reign of President Donald Trump. “He doesn’t do well with suburban women and I think that hurts us,” said Jim Zay, a County Board member and chairman of DuPage County Republicans. “It’s time to rebrand and regroup and come back in two years.” Many of the county’s races ended on a paper-thin margin — nine were within a percentage point or two as of Friday afternoon — so it could be contested territory for years to come. But College of DuPage political science professor Melissa Mouritsen, who has written about the county’s transformation, said it’s following a path already traveled by other American suburbs. “DuPage is purple; it’s not fully Democratic yet,” she said. “But it’s at that tipping point.” A history in red  For more than a century DuPage County was as Republican as could be, home to GOP stalwarts such as U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, who led the impeachment of President Bill Clinton, Pate Philip, president of the Illinois Senate for a decade, and two-time Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan. As recently as 2000, the election of a single Democrat to the County Board was cause for a wonder-struck story in the Tribune. But Mouritsen said the changes that would result in the county’s political realignment were already underway. One was demographic: The county went from 79% white in 2000 to 66% now, and median household income, expressed in 2018 dollars, dropped from $99,000 to $88,000. As the population diversified by race, income and political ideology — many newcomers hailed from the Democratic power center of Cook County, Mouritsen said — a growing number of people proved amenable to the Democrats. The redrawing of political districts after the 2010 census, a process controlled by House Speaker Michael Madigan, also helped to elevate Democrats to national and state offices, she said. County offices, however, remained thoroughly red. Liz Chaplin, who was first elected to the DuPage board with two other Democrats in 2012, was by 2016 the last of her party on the 18-member panel. “Sometimes I just felt like I was hitting my head against the wall,” she said. “It’s hard when you’re the only one.” Then came Donald Trump. He was the favorite among the county’s Republican primary voters in 2016, but the DuPage electorate as a whole rejected him, giving him only 39% of the vote in the general election, the lowest GOP share in decades. Two years into Trump’s tumultuous administration, the county’s moderate Republicans were open to hearing a new message, said Cynthia Borbas, chair of the DuPage Democrats. “Previously they were like, ‘Oh, Democrats? We don’t even want to talk to you,’” she said. “But because of Trump, more people are paying attention and they’re willing to have more conversations with us. And we’re connecting on the values and issues we care about.” Trickle to a flood In the 2018 election, DuPage voters elected Jean Kaczmarek as county clerk, making her the first Democrat to hold countywide office in 84 years. They also added six Democrats to the County Board. Jamie Wood, who moved to Lisle from Detroit two years ago, said he votes Democratic all the way down the ballot, even for candidates whose names and policy stances are unfamiliar. “My mindset right now is to just have as much of a blue wave as I possibly can just because of how much I’m fed up with the status quo,” he said. Wood, 33, who grew up in Elgin, is familiar with DuPage’s political history, but said young families like his are replacing older residents who were reliably Republican. These new families, he said, consider schools their top priority and aren’t as focused on traditional GOP concerns such as public safety. State’s Attorney Robert Berlin, who ran unopposed, emphasized law and order in a letter he sent in his role as Republican committeeman to Democratic households in his precinct. He wrote that county GOP officials from coroner to auditor “stand for one thing: the importance of public safety and adherence to the rule of law.” Two of those candidates, aspiring recorder Babette Holder Youngberg and incumbent Circuit Court Clerk Chris Kachiroubas, were trailing their Democratic opponents Friday afternoon with thousands of votes left to be counted. Auditor Bob Grogan led his Democratic rival by just 676 votes. But Berlin noted that a referendum asking whether the county should keep law enforcement as its top funding priority was approved by a 3-to-1 margin, suggesting the message was still potent. He said he didn’t know why Republicans stumbled in DuPage, but added that it happened in many other suburbs across the country. “We’re not unique in that regard,” he said. Purple future? Amy Chavez, a Naperville Democrat who won election to the County Board, said her constituents are chiefly concerned about COVID-19 — “When they think safe, they want to be safe from the virus” — and that the new Democratic majority will ensure the health department has what it needs to conduct testing and contact tracing. Paula Deacon Garcia, of Lisle, who was leading her race for a board seat Friday, said her issues are climate change, sustainability and public health, along with lowering the temperature at public meetings. “Since I’ve been attending, they’ve become quite partisan,” she said. “I’m looking for a bipartisan approach.” Republican board Chairman Dan Cronin could not be reached for comment. Zay was hopeful a return to form might not be far away for DuPage Republicans. The GOP needs to do a better job claiming credit for making DuPage an appealing place to live, he said, and must bring more women and young people into the fold. He noted that every seat on the County Board will be up for election in two years. Trump won’t be on that ballot, but another polarizing figure likely will: Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, whose shutdown orders during the pandemic have angered plenty of suburbanites. Borbas, meanwhile, said the county’s Democrats aren’t taking anything for granted. They fought Republicans for every vote in the 2020 election and are ready to do it again, she said. “I don’t think it’s a fluke, I don’t think it’s a one-off, I don’t think DuPage is blue,” she said. “But I think what it means is that we’re in the game now and we’re here to stay.”)

— Is One Million in Annuities or Securities Enough to Retire On?

(FROM THE ARTICLE: $1 million is no longer enough to retire on You have to get rich these days just to finance a comfortable retirement. That’s the conclusion financial advisors are increasingly coming around to, as they gauge the direction of the economy in a strange new world of glacial growth and super-low interest rates. “Twenty years ago, someone with a million bucks would have said, ‘that’s great, I can draw down $100,000 a year, I’ll be just fine,’” Jim McCaughan, CEO of Principal Global Investors, tells me in the video above. “But now, with very low rates, the problem of funding a retirement is much more difficult.” Retirees don’t need to be told that low rates have cut sharply into the returns on fixed-income investments. But they may need to rethink how to prepare for what might happen in the future. Many investors are waiting for interest rates to go back up, once the Federal Reserve starts hiking short-term rates later this year or early next year. Meanwhile, the Fed is gradually winding down its vast “quantitative easing” program, which deliberately forced down long-term rates. So as that pressure eases, rates ought to go back up. Right? Maybe not. McCaughan argues that we’ll be in a low-rate environment for much longer than many people expect, for a couple of basic reasons. First, an aging population means the demand for low-risk bonds will rise, pushing up prices but pulling down yields. Second, there’s been a growing gap between global demand and global production capacity, which will keep a lid on prices of most things for the foreseeable future. Low inflation usually coincides with low-interest rates. There’s nothing magical (or scientific) about $1 million as a goal for retirement savings. As a round benchmark, however, it’s been in the ballpark for a couple hoping to retire comfortably. A $1 million principal will generate $60,000 per year in income if the portfolio’s return is 6%, and $40,000 per year at 4%. The amount you need to live on, of course, depends on many factors, including the cost of living where you reside, healthcare expenses, how much you travel and how long you live. But if rates remain in the low range they’re in now—with 10-year Treasury rates well below 3%, say—it will change the math of retirement planning. During most of the baby boomers’ working lives, it was reasonable to expect annual returns of 6% to 10% on a retirement portfolio, without taking much risk. Add Social Security and other pension payments, and a $1 million nest egg was more than adequate for most people.)
