https://www.pjstar.com/news/20190513/marijuana-bill-may-violate-illinois-constitution-prosecutors-say
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A key component of a bill that would legalize possession and sale of marijuana for recreational use in Illinois — erasing pot-related convictions for potentially hundreds of thousands of people — may violate the state Constitution, according to the group representing county prosecutors statewide. The bill essentially would create legislative pardons, which are illegal, said Robert Berlin, president of the Illinois State’s Attorneys Association. Under the Illinois Constitution, only the governor can issue pardons, Berlin, the DuPage County state’s attorney, told The State Journal-Register. “It’s a separation of powers argument,” he said. An additional constitutional concern, he said, is that prosecutors would be prohibited under the bill from helping to determine who is and isn’t eligible for expungement of certain misdemeanor and felony convictions. “It takes away all of our discretion,” Berlin said of Senate Bill 7, adding that court challenges could overturn such expungements. Berlin, a Republican, said the bipartisan association plans to present its concerns to Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat and supporter of the bill, as well as the bill’s sponsors in the General Assembly. Berlin said the association has taken a neutral stance on the overall bill.)

https://illinoistimes.com/article-21221-muhs-accompanied-by-staff-leaves-sj-r.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The entire State Journal-Register newsroom walked out today in support of now former editor Angie Muhs, who was walked out of the building this afternoon by the paper’s general manager after submitting her resignation on Friday. In an impromptu show of solidarity, the staff accompanied Muhs as she left the building for the final time. “Everyone walked out with her as a show of respect,” reporter Dean Olsen said. “We all gave her a hug and applauded for her and thanked her for the stand that she was taking. … People are crying.” Olsen said Muhs told her staff on Friday that she was leaving partly in hopes of avoiding more layoffs at a paper that has been decimated by staff cuts. “I think her hope was, by not having her salary to pay, her hope would be that there would be no layoffs,” said Olsen, who wasn’t present when Muhs announced her departure last week. “She was a very good editor, and she tried to promote good journalism in Springfield, despite some pretty trying circumstances that she had to deal with from GateHouse Media (the paper’s corporate owner).” Muhs declined to say what she told her staff, but she said she wasn’t expecting colleagues to walk out of the building with her. “I was very touched,” Muhs said. “I didn’t expect that. … I have tremendous respect and admiration for the State Journal-Register staff. They’re dedicated. They’re hard working. They care about doing quality local journalism, and they persevered under some really tough conditions.” Muhs lasted five years as editor of the State Journal-Register, coming to Springfield from a media company in Maine. For the second year in a row, the SJ-R this spring was named GateHouse Newspaper of the Year for its circulation division. In 2017, Muhs was named Editor of the Year in the SJ-R’s circulation division in a company-wide contest. GateHouse Media, which bought the SJ-R in 2007 and promised “hyperlocal” coverage, publishes more than 150 daily papers and is one of the nation’s biggest newspaper companies. “Angie Muhs exemplifies everything one could ask for from an editor,” wrote former SJ-R publisher and president wrote when Muhs won the 2017 editor of the year award. “She is deeply connected to her community, constantly looks for ways the SJ-R can be a leader in community engagement, demands excellence from her team and works tirelessly to ensure deliver (sic) quality, impactful content to our readers every day.” The praise remains posted at www.bestofgatehouse.com, the company web page dedicated to its contests. Gracing GateHouse Media’s home page is a photo of Abraham Lincoln impersonators taken by Rich Saal, the paper’s longtime photo editor who was laid off two weeks ago, the latest cut for a paper that has seen plenty. In 2012, newsroom employees, voted 26-4 to form a union after the paper laid off the entire copy desk. There are five news reporters left, and several beats, including courts, police and education, no longer have fulltime reporters assigned to them. Muhs declined to discuss staff cuts, but she praised Saal, saying he was one of the best photojournalists she’s ever worked with. She’s been vocal in the past about her feelings while GateHouse sliced her staff. Last September, amid a round of cuts, Muhs tweeted a quote from New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger, who said “You cannot cut the value of the product you give readers and expect them to reward you with growth.” Muhs included her own take: “Amen. If only all owners heeded these words.” Olsen said Muhs appeared emotional as she left the building for the last time. “I think she’s tried to fight within the channels of GateHouse to try to preserve the staff,” Olsen said. “I don’t know how successful she’s been. I know it’s been very frustrating for her. Her heart is in this. She quit without a job lined up. I think that says a lot right there.)

https://www.pewtrusts.org/en/research-and-analysis/blogs/stateline/2019/05/14/behind-the-movement-to-kick-chicago-out-of-illinois
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In Illinois, a resolution calling on Congress to declare Chicago the 51st state has eight Republican cosponsors in the state House (there are 44 Republicans in the lower chamber) and support among many of the state’s conservative activists. It’s the second such bill in as many years. Illinois state Rep. Brad Halbrook, the bill’s author, cites the many issues tearing the state apart. He listed Democrats’ “overreaching” stances on abortion, guns, immigration, debt, pensions, Medicaid spending, property taxes, green energy and workers’ compensation as just some of the reasons Chicago and Illinois should go their separate ways. Recent polling from the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale shows two-thirds of Illinois voters think the state is moving in the wrong direction. That same March poll from the Simon Institute shows “significant regional differences” in responses. The state division hit a breaking point several years ago, when Illinois was mired in the longest fiscal stalemate in the United States since the Great Depression. The budget battle between Democratic lawmakers and then-Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner lasted more than two years, threatening public university accreditation, statewide road construction and “junk” credit ratings. Halbrook blamed the impasse on Chicago-area Democrats. “Everywhere I go, people say we just need to get rid of Chicago,” he told Stateline. “It gets rid of all of our problems. My constituency is serious about it. I’m trying to save the state.” Halbrook has a small family farm in Shelbyville, a rural community along the Kaskaskia River in central Illinois with around 4,600 residents. New Illinois? Forty percent of the Prairie State’s 12.7 million residents live in Cook County, the county surrounding Chicago. The broader Chicago metropolitan area consists of 9.5 million people. Without the Chicagoland area, Illinois would have fewer people than Connecticut. Democrats control both chambers of the General Assembly and the governor’s office, and most of them are from Chicagoland — including 62 of the 74 Democrats in the House. The rest of Illinois is largely agricultural and conservative, aside from the parts of Illinois near St. Louis in neighboring Missouri and pockets of central Illinois. A July 2018 paper from the Simon Institute found that Illinois’ politics “are marked and marred by regionalism.” The idea of dividing Illinois has been around throughout Illinois’ history, the paper says, despite “how impractical it is.” While these regional divides are prevalent in other states across the country, it’s exaggerated in Illinois because of “the extent to which many Illinois leaders emphasize, exploit and exacerbate these regional differences for their own advantage,” the paper claims. The Windy City has all the political power, the money and the economic growth, said G.H. Merritt, who runs New Illinois, a separation group that has begun starting chapters in counties throughout the state to build grassroots support. Merritt, a former nonprofit administrator, lives in Lake County, north of Chicago. So far, she has 26 county chapters that want to split the rest of Illinois from Chicago. When forming her organization, Merritt sought advice from other state separation organizations, like New California. The group, which is run by a conservative radio talk show host, advocates for the creation of a new state split from the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas “to throw off the bonds of tyranny.” Activists such as Merritt blame state Democratic leaders from Chicago for creating a “systemically corrupt climate” and many of the problems Illinois currently faces, like the $134 billion in unfunded pensions and other fiscal problems — despite the fact that these problems grew through both Democratic and Republican governorships.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTO OF CHIEF STEVEN STELTER: Legalize pot? No way, says leader of state police chief association – Charles Keeshan and Susan Sarkauskas (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, every municipality, every township/ward, every county, and every state in America should discourage pot usage. The Wheaton City Council is seeking applicants for city’s vacant North District City Council position. Applicants are asked to submit a statement identifying the three most important issues that they believe the city needs to address in the next two years as well as their opinion on how those issues could be addressed. Needless-to-say, applicants should state that discouraging pot usage is one of Wheaton’s most important issues and that Wheaton should do everything that it can to discourage pot usage. Applicants should state in no uncertain terms that they will vote against legalizing the sale of pot in Wheaton.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190510/legalize-pot-no-way-says-leader-of-state-police-chief-association
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The suburban police chief recently elected president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police says he’s making it a top priority to fight the legalization of recreational marijuana use here. “It is a disastrous move,” Chief Steven Stelter said, ticking off more than a half-dozen reasons the association opposes the proposed Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act. Among them: more fatal crashes and more violent crime in states that have legalized it. . .”I’m sure everybody that wants to grow is going to stick to five plants,” he said with more than a hint of sarcasm. The chiefs association also disputes the belief that legalization will reduce the black market for the drug, and it says overseas drug cartels have set up grow operations in rental or foreclosed houses in states where marijuana is legal. “It is destroying our children in legal states,” Stelter said, referring to reports that use by seventh- and eighth-graders increased in those places, and there has been an increase in calls to poison-control centers about children who ingested marijuana-laced edibles. Politicians in Illinois are turning a blind eye to these concerns, he said. “They don’t even want to hear it.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But the idea provoked strong opposition from Republicans, who argued that expanding the pool of students who are eligible for MAP grants by allowing noncitizens to receive them would crowd out legal citizens from getting them. “Ladies and gentlemen, the math is simple,” Sen. Jim Oberweis, a Sugar Grove Republican, said. “Each and every one of us have students in our districts who are relying on MAP funding. If we’re going to take some of that funding away from our citizens and give it to noncitizens, that means we’re depriving some of our citizens, some of our students, from being able to have that funding to help with their education. Where history books vilify Republican conservatives for fighting to defend slavery, inciting segregation, and founding the KKK. Cable news shows would only report crimes committed by conservatives or capitalists and social media only allowed leftist ideas to be communicated over their platforms. Well, if the left continues its scorched-earth policy against free speech, in no time at all the United States will have no resemblance to what the Founding Fathers envisioned. So many examples exist that fully detail the poverty, violence, and atrocities that quickly emerge when free speech is taken away that it raises the question as to why so many younger Americans are indifferent about the loss of such an important right.)

DEKALB DAILY JOURNAL
— Would legal marijuana bring dispensaries to DeKalb, Sycamore? Mayors weigh in DeKalb, Sycamore mayors weigh in on recreational marijuana legalization – KELSEY RETTKE (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, each and every mayor and each and every city council member in Illinois and each and every candidate for the aforesaid positions should state on the record that they will vote to pass ordinances a) to “opt out” of the retail sale of pot and b) to impose zoning restrictions on the commercial growing of pot. The Wheaton City Council is seeking applicants for city’s vacant North District City Council position. Applicants are asked to submit a statement identifying the three most important issues that they believe the city needs to address in the next two years as well as their opinion on how those issues could be addressed. Needless-to-say, applicants should state that discouraging pot usage is one of Wheaton’s most important issues. According to Capitol Fax’s Rich Miller, “Dude, I got news for you: Cannabis is already in your neighborhood. Your neighbors are consuming it, perhaps even right this moment. And most of your neighbors want it legalized.” SEE: https://capitolfax.com/2019/05/07/moylan-apparently-doesnt-realize-that-people-use-cannabis-now/)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DECEMBER 24, 2003 FLASHBACK: Church arsonist receives 39 years – Ted Gregory (DIERSEN: Palinski was a registered Republican voter in my precinct. According to this article, Palinski’s “life started unraveling when he began using marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs as a teenager.” I should try to arrange for Palinski to speak at public hearings in Wheaton about the evils of pot.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2003-12-24-0312240124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Wheaton man who was admonished by a judge as a “selfish heartbreaker” received 39 years in prison Tuesday for setting fires that destroyed a Catholic church and damaged his next-door neighbor’s home, and for trying to arrange the murder of a prosecution witness in those cases. Adam Palinski, 22, a college student with a history of emotional instability, was sentenced by DuPage County Judge Perry Thompson. Palinski broke the hearts of parishioners at Wheaton’s St. Michael Catholic Church, which Palinski and his family attended, as well as the hearts of his neighbors and relatives, Thompson said. Thompson noted at Tuesday’s sentencing that family members testified Palinski is loving, courteous and religious. “Had any of those good qualities been present on the days in question, we would not be here today,” Thompson said. “Your dreams are going to be deferred for a long time.” In November, juries found Palinski guilty of arson, aggravated arson and solicitation of murder for hire. Aided by a videotaped confession and audio tapes of wiretapped conversations, prosecutors said Palinski set fire to the inside of the church about 2 a.m. March 18, 2002, after a night of drinking. The church, which was destroyed, is offering masses for the estimated 2,700 families in its school gymnasium. St. Michael’s leaders estimate the cost of rebuilding to be $9.75 million. About $4.5 million has been raised. After setting the church ablaze, Palinski splashed gasoline on his neighbor’s home and ignited it, prosecutors said. It went out before the residents awoke that morning. No one was injured. On one of the tapes, when investigators asked why Palinski set the fires, he replied: “No particular reason. I was bored.” Five months after his arrest, Palinski was charged with trying to find a hit man to kill a friend who obtained informal admissions of guilt from Palinski by wearing a court-approved listening device. At Tuesday’s sentencing, DuPage County Assistant State’s Atty. Joseph Ruggiero, who prosecuted the case with Steven Knight, said Palinski was a liar whose life started unraveling when he began using marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs as a teenager.)

https://capitalresearch.org/article/dont-trust-the-messenger-part-4/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservatives and right-leaning moderates know that in order to get the “full story” they should read not only the Wall Street Journal and National Review, but also the Washington Post and The Atlantic. After all, it’s important to know how the other half of America thinks and feels about the news of the day. However, the media landscape isn’t what it used to be—where once there were nominally nonpartisan broadcast and print media, new nonprofit newsrooms backed by big liberal foundation resources have risen, even as conservative platforms have folded. But that doesn’t mean conservative readers and writers should resign themselves to obsolescence: a combination of foundation giving and visionary leadership could breathe new life into conservative and even less-partisan journalism, while providing the stability and flexibility necessary for new outlets to thrive.)

I would stress the fact that I have put together and sent out a GOPUSA ILLINOIS email each and every morning since 2004 (4,860+ days) and each and every evening too since 2015 (1,210+ days).)
https://news.wttw.com/2019/04/29/age-and-american-presidency-how-old-too-old
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Is there such a thing as being too old to be president? Americans first questioned whether a candidate was too old for the world’s highest office in 1840, with the candidacy of 67-year-old William Henry Harrison. He was 68 when he was inaugurated the nation’s ninth president. Barely a month later, a sudden bout of pneumonia ended his term – and his life. It was 140 years before America elected an older man to the presidency – Ronald Reagan, who was inaugurated at 69 and was 77 when he left office. Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease a few years later, but some believe he was showing signs of the disease during his second term as president. And in 2016, Donald Trump was 70 when he took the oath of office, making him the oldest president ever inaugurated. Among the 21 Democratic candidates hoping to challenge Trump in the 2020 election are more in their 60s and 70s than ever before. Two full generations separate the youngest presidential candidate, Pete Buttigieg (37), and the oldest, Bernie Sanders (77) and Joe Biden (76). Dr. John Holton, director of the Center for Gerontology at Concordia University, says that rather than asking if a candidate is too old for office, “a better question would be to ask what the characteristics of a bad president are. Would the answer have anything to do with the person’s age, religion, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, or experience? Are we confusing our assumptions about maturity with age?” Critics of older candidates say that electing a president in their 60s or 70s can be risky. The nation’s highest office is a physically demanding job that challenges even the fittest person – and there’s no good time for a health crisis when you’re in the Oval Office. Signs of age-related cognitive decline might not become apparent until it’s too late. Holton notes, “In the fishbowl life of a U.S. president, it would be highly unlikely that [cognitive impairment] would go unnoticed or unaddressed by staff and cabinet members.” There is also the consideration of life span. While life spans are longer than they were when the country was young, simple statistics indicate that electing a candidate in their 70s greatly increases the odds they’ll die while in office, but again, Holton points out that each candidate must be judged individually. “No more than 25% of longevity is determined by our genes, which means that 75% is determined by our choices and lifestyle behaviors,” he said. Holton also points out that at the moment, two Supreme Court justices are performing their own demanding jobs into their 80s (to wit: 86-year-old Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s famously rigorous exercise regimen). Many voters might consider advanced age a sign of experience and wisdom – qualities that presumably anyone would consider positive qualifications for office.)

https://www.sj-r.com/news/20190427/education-officials-lawmakers-look-at-alternatives-to-teacher-testing
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the teacher shortage in Illinois has grown to what some say are “crisis” levels, education officials and lawmakers are looking to change the way potential teachers are assessed. One reason for the shortage cited by the education community is the glut of tests required to get a teaching license in Illinois — along with the fact students aren’t passing them at the level they used to. To get a teaching license in Illinois, students need to pass a basic skills test, another test called the edTPA and a content-area test. Of those who took the basic skills test, called the Test of Academic Proficiency, in the first three months of this year, 25 percent passed, according to data on the Illinois State Board of Education’s website. ISBE is putting the TAP on hold starting June 30 as it looks at different ways to assess basic skills. State Rep. Sue Scherer, D-Decatur, is the sponsor of House Bill 423, which would eliminate the test until 2025. Sen. Andy Manar, D-Bunker Hill, introduced a bill, Senate Bill 1952, that would get rid of the basic skills test permanently. Both bills were approved in one chamber earlier this month and await consideration in the other chamber. The Illinois State Board of Education has taken a neutral position on the bills, a lobbyist for the agency said during a recent meeting. As a teacher, Scherer saw many examples of would-be teachers held back by the basic skills test. She linked the difficulties to students’ test anxiety and the poorly written test. The questions, Scherer said, are abstract to the point where students can’t figure out what the questions are asking. There also is an argument the tests are discriminatory toward people of color. Scherer says the tests don’t take life experiences or cultural differences into account. During the first quarter of the year, 12 percent of African-American students and 14 percent of Hispanic students passed the basic skills test.)

AMERICAN THINKER
— Real Leverage on Illegal Immigration – Mike Razar
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/04/real_leverage_on_illegal_immigration_.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The main reason it is so difficult to deal with illegal immigration is that there is an unwritten but not secret alliance between RINOs who want cheap labor and leftists who want new voters. It is not clear whether either side of that bargain really gets what it wants, but it endures. Meanwhile, conservatives want a secure border and the rule of law. Keeping criminals and drugs out is a high priority and only a wall or other barriers will do, The RINOs and leftists are willing to tolerate the criminals and drugs in return for their other goals. What do conservatives want? Of course, no list will be agreed to by all but here are the main desired reforms: Build a border wall or other barriers. Mandate E-verify. End chain migration. End the visa lottery. End “catch and release”. Tighten rules for asylum seekers and only admit them after they prove their case. End sanctuary cities, states, or other jurisdictions. Add citizenship question to 2020 census. Redistrict based on only U.S. citizens. Liberals want none of the above; they want open borders.)

Today, the population is 40 percent non-Hispanic white, about a third are Hispanic, and 18 percent are of Asian heritage. As recently as 2010, Republicans enjoyed a registration advantage of almost 200,000 voters; today, the number of Republican voters outnumber Democrats by fewer than 20,000, and another 400,000 voters decline to choose a party. The changing electorate gave Democrats a chance to capitalize on an unpopular president, even as Republicans showed up to defend their seats. Republican turnout actually increased across Orange County by more than 100,000 votes between the 2014 and 2018 midterm elections — but Democratic turnout surged by nearly 200,000 votes, swamping the GOP, according to the Democratic data firm TargetSmart.)

They certainly made me pay the price. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,568 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. NATIONAL REVIEW
— On Stephen Moore’s ‘Brainiac’ Immigrants – JASON RICHWINE (DIERSEN: Are/were you a high-skilled employee? What indicates that an employee is/was high skilled – work experience, education, professional certifications, professional licenses? I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/h1-b-visas-highly-skilled-immigrants/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In praising the “brainiacs” who hold H-1B visas, Stephen Moore writes that “the firms that use these visas must affirm that they were not able to find comparably skilled American workers to do the jobs.” That claim is generally false. Most firms are not even required to advertise the position before applying for an H-1B worker. (Recruiting Americans prior to applying for an H-1B is required only for employers deemed “H-1B dependent” or “willful violators.”) Moore’s piece has remained uncorrected on the Dallas News site for six days and counting. The error is important because it touches on a key question about the H-1B program, and about “high-skill” immigration more generally: Are we really getting Einstein-level intellects with few American equivalents, or are firms simply importing run-of-the-mill college graduates to hold down wages? To support the Einstein theory, Moore cites the testimony of Bill Gates, who once claimed that each H-1B worker hired by Microsoft creates four new jobs.)

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT JOBS
— GAO Analyst Student Intern Student Trainee Job (DIERSEN: Were you an intern? GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinated did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $33,591/year) intern, that is, to suffer a $60,001/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They painted what GAO Analysts do as being a unique “trade or occupation.” They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $82,579-$93,592/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— HRO upheaval and a GOP feud – Shia Kapos (DIERSEN: Disgustingly, outrageously, tragically, and ever-increasingly, Illinois Republicans first learn from Democrat news sources like Capitol Fax and Politico Illinois what Illinois Republican Party (IRP) leaders are saying and doing. Far too often, it looks like IRP leaders are taking direction from Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs who have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout to keep Illinois Republicans including Dave Diersen and his GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails “out of the loop.”)
https://www.politico.com/newsletters/illinois-playbook/2019/04/22/hro-upheaval-and-a-gop-feud-newman-hits-a-roadblock-meister-wants-a-rematch-427112
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After losing six House seats in the 2018 general election, the House Republican Organization is reorganizing its leadership team and ramping up fundraising. Political Director Joe Woodward, a confidante and friend to House GOP Leader Jim Durkin, is out, according to a memo Durkin and new HRO Chair Tony McCombie sent Saturday to caucus members and obtained by POLITICO. Woodward is moving to the private sector, and HRO has hired Jayme Odom with the new title: executive director. “We’re bringing in additional fundraisers and plan to be more aggressive with members on their own fundraising with the organization,” Durkin told POLITICO. The changes come after re-evaluating the 2018 losses. “When you have a multi-billionaire writing checks, it’s difficult,” Durkin said, referring, of course, to Gov. J.B. Pritzker‘s backing of so many Dem candidates. “We have to be more self-sufficient.” GOP Rep. Mark Batinick (97th) says the GOP caucus has done “much introspection” on its campaign strategy leading up to 2020. “Only through a thorough self-examination can we fully improve. Not only is it OK to question everything, it’s what any organization should do from time to time,” he told POLITICO. Republican campaign coffers remain a fraction of their Democratic counterparts. The HRO, which has a fundraiser planned April 29, has $38,000 cash on hand, compared to the Democratic Majority’s $3.4 million. Durkin, meanwhile, has $900,000 on hand while House Speaker Mike Madigan sits on $7.4 million. Odom, HRO’s new executive director, meanwhile, is a familiar player in Illinois politics. She previously was chief of staff for the Illinois Lottery during Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration. During that time, a state investigation found Odom failed to disclose her connection to lobbyists for a company vying for a lucrative lottery contract. Odom then left for Ohio, where she helped manage Jim Renacci’s unsuccessful U.S. Senate campaign last year. Odom also worked as executive director for the Illinois Republican Party from 2013-2015. GOP drama part 2: Some GOP lawmakers are criticizing that political operative David Walsh was paid for consulting for Citizens for Durkin and for Majority Strategies — a national firm that also does political mailings for the HRO. The payments to Walsh by Majority Strategies were not publicly disclosed, according to a WCIA report last week. Durkin says Walsh was paid out of his campaign fund — not by HRO — and that Walsh’s work with Majority Strategies “is independent” of any work with HRO. One downstate Republican, per an interview with POLITICO, is hoping for an investigation to clear up the murkiness. And state Rep. Dave McSweeney, also in an interview, accused Durkin of paying “his buddy” Walsh instead of putting money toward House races. He even called on Durkin to step down. GOP drama part 3: Yep, there’s a feud between McSweeney and Durkin that goes beyond campaign cash. Last week, the House GOP leader pulled McSweeney’s communications aide after McSweeney spoke out against Rep. Steve Reick for a racially tinged comment about a bill requiring company boards to diversify. Reick later apologized. McSweeney paid to promote a tweet condemning Reick’s comment. In a statement to POLITICO, Durkin said: “This is an internal caucus matter. I will continue working to move the Republican Party and House Republican caucus forward in Illinois but will not tolerate public attacks on fellow members.”)

— The Case Against Early Retirement Many people dream of leaving the office as soon as they can. But the evidence suggests a lot of downsides. It may be time to rethink those dreams. – Richard W. Johnson (DIERSEN: I should write a book about early retirement.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-case-against-early-retirement-11555899000
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most people look forward to retirement, a reward for decades of hard work. But like many other pleasures, it may be bad for your health. It may even kill you. How can that be? How can working longer be good for your health? After all, many people dream of—and plan for—retiring early. Strenuous, stressful work can wear people down and damage their health. On the other hand, retirees can relax and reinvigorate themselves. They have time to follow their passions and pursue activities that enrich their lives. But in our rush to leave the office, we don’t realize that retirement also has a downside, especially over the long term. Many retirees indulge in unhealthy behaviors. They become sedentary and watch too much television. They eat too much. They drink too much. They smoke too much. Without the purpose of fulfilling work, retirees can feel adrift and become depressed. Without the camaraderie of their co-workers, retirees risk becoming socially isolated. Without the intellectual stimulation that work can provide, retirement can accelerate cognitive decline.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to a recent article in the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal, Seattle spends more than $1 billion annually struggling with its homeless problem, “nearly $100,000 for every homeless man, woman and child in King County.” Yet, the article continues, “the crisis seems only to have deepened, with more addiction, more crime and more tent encampments in residential neighborhoods. By any measure, the city’s efforts are not working.” The author, Christopher Rufo, a fellow at the Seattle-based Center for Wealth, Poverty & Morality at the Discovery Institute, surveys what he calls the “ideological power centers” driving the discussions in Seattle about how to deal with their homeless. Not surprisingly, they are all on the left, and, of course, one socialist city councilwoman explains it as “how deeply dysfunctional capitalism is.” Seattle-based corporations, such as Amazon, Microsoft, Starbucks and Boeing, in her analysis, “drive up housing prices and push the working class toward poverty and despair — and, too often, onto the streets.” The irony of this distorted analysis lies in tying it to the immigration crisis. Those massing on our southern border, trying to gain entry to our country, are pouring out from dysfunctional socialist Central American countries such as Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua. Capitalism and economic freedom are the answer, not the problem.)

HEARTLAND INSTITUTE
— CENSORED! HOW ONLINE MEDIA COMPANIES ARE SUPPRESSING FREE SPEECH – Media Research Center
https://www.heartland.org/publications-resources/publications/censored-how-online-media-companies-are-suppressing-free-speech
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Top tech firms like Google, YouTube and Twitter partner with leftist groups attempting to censor conservatives. Like it or not, social media is the communication form of the future — not just in the U.S., but worldwide. Just Facebook and Twitter combined reach 1.8 billion people. More than two-thirds of all Americans (68 percent) use Facebook. YouTube is pushing out TV as the most popular place to watch video. Google is the No. 1 search engine in both the U.S. and the world. War is being declared on the conservative movement in this space and conservatives are losing — badly. If the right is silenced, billions of people will be cut off from conservative ideas and conservative media. It’s the new battleground of media bias. But it’s worse. That bias is not a war of ideas. It’s a war against ideas. It’s a clear effort to censor the conservative worldview from the public conversation. The Media Research Center has undertaken an extensive study of the problem at major tech companies — Twitter, Facebook, Google and YouTube — and the results are far more troubling than most conservatives realize. Here are some of the key findings:)

Herndon and Matt Flegenheimer (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, to get elected, White men promise to use their office to give more and more and more preference to minorities and to women, and especially to those who are younger. How soon, if not already, to get elected, will White men promise to immediately a) fire all those who they have authority to fire who are White and/or male and b) replace them with young minorities and young females? To get promoted beyond GS-13 in the federal government, you have to a) excel in hiring, retaining, and promoting young Democrat minorities and young Democrat women and b) excel in getting rid of federal employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)

— The new digital divide is between people who opt out of algorithms and people who don’t – Anjana Susarla (DIERSEN: Your GOPUSA Illinois Editor is NOT a Democrat or Democrat plant algorithm, Libertarian or Libertarian plant algorithm, Green or Green plant algorithm, or RINO algorithm. Consequently, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails contain links to articles that promote the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and in the Republican Party platform. Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois want to a) abolish the aforesaid planks and b) abolish me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
https://qz.com/1597901/how-people-feel-about-algorithms-has-become-the-new-digital-divide/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every aspect of life can be guided by artificial intelligence algorithms—from choosing what route to take for your morning commute, to deciding whom to take on a date, to complex legal and judicial matters such as predictive policing. Big tech companies like Google and Facebook use AI to obtain insights on their gargantuan trove of detailed customer data. This allows them to monetize users’ collective preferences through practices such as micro-targeting, a strategy used by advertisers to narrowly target specific sets of users. In parallel, many people now trust platforms and algorithms more than their own governments and civic society. An October 2018 study suggested that people demonstrate “algorithm appreciation,” to the extent that they would rely on advice more when they think it is from an algorithm than from a human. In the past, technology experts have worried about a “digital divide” between those who could access computers and the internet and those who could not. Households with less access to digital technologies are at a disadvantage in their ability to earn money and accumulate skills. But, as digital devices proliferate, the divide is no longer just about access. How do people deal with information overload and the plethora of algorithmic decisions that permeate every aspect of their lives? The savvier users are navigating away from devices and becoming aware of how algorithms affect their lives. Meanwhile, consumers who have less information are relying even more on algorithms to guide their decisions.)
