(FROM THE ARTICLE: Before the requests from Green Thumb Industries and Grassroots Cannabis can be considered, however, the Naperville City Council must decide if they will allow pot to be sold within city limits and, if yes, what kind of restrictions should be in place and what kind of tax should be charged. The discussion will start at Tuesday’s council meeting. . .While municipal officials cannot restrict the consumption of cannabis in their towns, they can opt out of allowing adult-use cannabis dispensaries or place restrictions on such things as the number allowed and where they can be located, according to city documents. The new law allows only companies with existing medical marijuana dispensaries to begin selling recreational pot Jan. 1. Those companies will be allowed to sell cannabis from their current medical locations and one additional retail location, if approved by the municipality. There are currently 55 medical cannabis dispensaries in Illinois. Future dispensary licenses are expected to be issued by the state to non-medical license holders beginning in mid-2020. Should city council members approve the sale of recreational cannabis, Naperville officials would have to amend zoning code. The city can change its existing medical cannabis ordinance so it applies to adult-use cannabis dispensaries, city documents said. The ordinance as currently written includes language on where dispensaries are permitted and how far they must be from schools and residential areas.)

From there, the zoning board will hold a public hearing to review the amendment and provide a recommendation to the Village Board, which probably vote in October on the amendment, Budzikowski said. The Oak Brook Village Board unanimously approved a recommendation by Police Chief James Kruger in late May to oppose what at that time was proposed legislation by the General Assembly to legalize recreational marijuana. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed the legislation into law June 25. “Oak Brook spends a lot of effort trying to be a family-friendly community, and I don’t think a marijuana dispensary, or that type of business, fits with that,” Village Board member John Baar said Thursday. Baar also said he believes not allowing marijuana-related businesses in Oak Brook goes hand-in-hand with the village not permitting video gaming. Village President Gopal Lalmalani agreed. “We want to take the high road here, just like with video gaming,” Lalmalani said Thursday. “The board doesn’t’ believe recreational marijuana is a good thing. I don’t think it is just for that kind of economy to exist within this policy.” The push to legalize marijuana has gained traction in recent years. Eleven states have adopted laws allowing marijuana for recreational purposes. Dozens more, including Minnesota, approve medicinal use in some cases. But possessing or selling the substance remains a federal offense. Omar is a cosponsor of legislation that would remove the drug from the federal list of controlled substances and expunge federal convictions for marijuana possession or use. The measure is backed by a number of Democratic presidential candidates, including Sens. Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The proposal has so far failed to get a hearing in either chamber or attract support from Senate Republicans, whose votes would be needed to pass. A number of members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation, including fellow freshman Democrats Angie Craig and Dean Phillips, have previously expressed support for allowing states to legalize the substance. But Omar is the state’s only member pushing for lifting the prohibition on the federal level. Minnesota U.S. Sen. That’s because as a conservative at my small, Minnesota-based liberal arts institution, I’ve spent the last four years defending myself against personal and political attacks from professors and peers alike. The most recent example came in late April as the St. Olaf College Republicans hosted scholar Heather Mac Donald for a talk on her new book, “The Diversity Delusion: How Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture.” As chair of the group, I fielded many angry emails, including this from a theater professor: “This speaker is dangerous. It’s not about a difference in idealogical [sic] perspectives. This rhetoric is dangerous and puts my Black body in danger. This is antithetical to the St. Olaf mission statement. I’m not okay with this… and you all shouldn’t be either.” Several more professors emailed similar sentiments. This example is no outlier. In early 2018, college administrators shot down an effort to bring Ben Shapiro to campus for a speech. The officials denied the request by saying Shapiro was too divisive to bring to St. Olaf on the date in question. (It was the one-year anniversary of a racial protest on campus). They promised Shapiro could come at some unknown future date, but months of student organizing and planning were essentially wasted. Shapiro never made it to St. Olaf College. Also last year, our College Republicans’ display called “Why I’m a Conservative” was torn down by students upset by its messaging. They were apparently triggered by expressions such as “All human life has value,” “Facts > feelings,” “I love economic freedom” and “I pay taxes.” All these incidents spring from the prevailing ideology on campus, which was perhaps most evident the day after President Donald Trump was elected. The campus was in a tailspin. Several professors cried in front of their classes. Some canceled class altogether. Students openly wept in the quad. Protests broke out at a moment’s notice.)
