KANKAKEE DAILY JOURNAL
— Let’s get rid of all the political consultants – Jim Nowlan (DIERSEN: I have been a member of the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) (https://theaapc.org/) since 2001. I served on the board of AAPC’s Midwest Chapter 2001-2004. I have always complied with AAPC’s Code of Ethics (http://theaapc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/AAPC-Code-of-Ethics.pdf). There are extremely few Republican AAPC members in Illinois. I am one of them. I should write a book about those in Illinois who claim to be Republican political consultants, who are not AAPC members, who reject AAPC’s Code of Ethics, who viciously demonize, denigrate, and condemn me, and who bring disgrace at all political consultants.)
http://www.daily-journal.com/opinion/columnists/local/jim-nowlan-let-s-get-rid-of-all-the-political/article_b4313f71-0ce4-5fe9-b42e-e753909887c2.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Recently, on the same day, I received five over-size, glossy political postcards from Gov. Bruce Rauner. The cards told the most outrageous, bald-faced lies about an opponent that I have ever read. As I digested the messages, I became sick to my stomach. Rauner is being challenged by state Rep. Jeanne Ives for the GOP nomination for governor, at the March 20 Republican primary election. I do not favor either candidate. Ives is too conservative for me, and Rauner is, well, a bald-faced liar. And, apparently, not embarrassed or shamed a whit about his lying to the voters. The messages say that Ives, among other dastardly deeds: Is the lackey of Democratic Speaker of the Illinois House Mike Madigan Wants to keep the recent increase in the income tax and Opposes cutting property taxes Thee anti-Ives statements are “supported” by citations of roll call votes and quotations found in newspapers. Shamefully, the above claims by Rauner represent lying by the ploy of excerpting snippets from larger statements to reverse the meaning. For example, in Henry IV, Shakespeare has Dick the Butcher declare: ”The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers.” Sounds like an attack on lawyers. Yet, in the full context, Butcher thought if he disturbed law and order, he could become king. Thus, Shakespeare meant the famous line as a compliment to attorneys and judges who instill justice in society. That is what Rauner and his consultants have done. Reverse the meaning. Red becomes green; night, day. Indeed, Ives is as anti-Madigan, anti-tax (of any kind) as they come. Respected publications, such as Crain’s Chicago Business, columnist Scott Reeder and others, already have called out Rauner for his lying. We also must note Democrat Madigan, Rauner’s nemesis, has been using misleading attack ads against GOP opponents for years. I still stifle a rueful chuckle when I recall an ad in which Madigan minions charged a GOP opponent for consorting with sex perverts. This was so because the Republican rented an apartment to someone who had years earlier been convicted of some sex crime. Political campaigning has been rough and tumble since the early days of the Republic, when Federalists passed the Alien and Sedition Act. The law allowed President John Adams to jail to newspaper editors and others who criticized him, which he did with gusto. Today, billionaires flaunt limitless campaign spending as they assault untutored voters with lies and misleading half-truths that are laughable to insiders. Why do they do this? Because it works. In my day, half a century ago, candidates generally stuck to making positive statements about themselves, leaving their opponents alone. Not today, obviously. I blame the political consultants. They are paid to win, period. Not to win fairly, honestly, nor with substantive arguments. But simply to win. Win-at-any-cost consultants disgust me. They lurk in the background of campaigns, holding in contempt the voters they deceive. Consultants have found that voters — their cynicism probably ingrained by endless attack ads courtesy of those same consultants — tend to believe the worst about candidates today. Of course, candidates don’t have to accept the advice from consultants that they mislead the public about their opponents. Yet, too many candidates want to win so badly they accept the “wisdom” of their consultants, and thus often spend most of their money on the attack. Legitimate criticism of an opponent is fair game, of course, and helpful to voters. But outright lying? Come on. If we — you and I — don’t call out bald-faced lying, things will only get worse, if such is possible. At the national level, PolitiFact uses volunteers and donations to call out misrepresentation and lies. I propose at the state and local level in Illinois we create a simple Code of Ethics for Political Campaigns: “I will neither lie nor mislead voters about my opponents.” Then we ask all candidates to sign the pledge. Those who fail to sign the pledge, or break it, would be publicly rebuked. Those who sign and keep to the pledge would be publicly commended. The ideal group to implement a Code of Ethics would be the nonprofit Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. But they would need lots of volunteer help. Pollyannaish? Sure, but we could use some Jimmy Stewart (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) politics in our democracy. So, to be charitable, let’s not kill all the political consultants, appealing as the thought might be. Instead, let’s call out those consultants and candidates who lie and mislead.)

Charlton filing Diersen v. GAO in 1998. SEE: https://gopillinois.com/documents/ So far, at a minimum, in today’s dollars, my Democrat GAO superiors have cost me $1,505,950 ($2,569,162 lost salary minus $1,063,212 pension payments).)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Attorney General Jeff Sessions late Friday night fired former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe, a little more than 24 hours before McCabe was set to retire — a move that McCabe alleged was an attempt to slander him and undermine the ongoing special counsel investigation into the Trump campaign. Sessions announced the decision in a statement just before 10 p.m., noting that both the Justice Department inspector general and the FBI office that handles discipline had found “that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor — including under oath — on multiple occasions.” He said based on those findings and the recommendation of the department’s senior career official, “I have terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe effective immediately.” The move will likely cost McCabe a significant portion of his retirement benefits, though it is possible he could bring a legal challenge. He responded on Friday night with a lengthy statement, claiming he was being targeted because he was a witness in special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s probe into whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia and asserting that his actions were appropriate. He also alleged former FBI Director James B. Comey knew about the media disclosure about which the inspector general has raised questions. “This attack on my credibility is one part of a larger effort not just to slander me personally, but to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence professionals more generally,” McCabe said. “It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel investigation, which continue to this day. Their persistence in this campaign only highlights the importance of the Special Counsel’s work.” Trump tweeted early Saturday morning, “Andrew McCabe FIRED, a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI – A great day for Democracy. Sanctimonious James Comey was his boss and made McCabe look like a choirboy. He knew all about the lies and corruption going on at the highest levels of the FBI!” An email notifying McCabe of the move was sent to his work account and his lawyers just minutes before Sessions’s statement was made public, though McCabe learned of the firing from press accounts, his spokeswoman said. McCabe has been fighting vigorously to keep his job, and on Thursday, he spent nearly four hours inside the Justice Department pleading his case.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/realestate/20180314/CRED0701/180319958/chicago-suburbs-seeing-white-flight
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 24 census tracts mostly clustered in the southern end of Cook County, around places like Lynwood, Matteson and Homewood, the share of the white population declined at least one-quarter during that decade. The raw number of the decline had to be at least 100 people to be counted in Kye’s study. While data for other suburban Chicago counties are not reported in Kye’s paper, he dug into the data at Crain’s request and found seven census tracts in northeastern Will County, around Bolingbrook and Romeoville, and three scattered tracts in DuPage County that met his study’s criteria. There were none in Lake, Kane or McHenry counties, Kye said.)
— A startup for you debt-burdened millennials – ARI BENDERSKY (DIERSEN: Where did the money come from to pay for your college expenses? My outstanding parents provided me with room and board in their home in Crete a) 1966-1968 while I was a student at UIC, b) weekends during my first semester at NIU in 1969, and c) the summer of 1969. The money to pay for tuition, books, a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and room and board at NIU 1969-1970 (three semesters at University Plaza Dormitory (https://www.uplaza.com/) and then a summer session at Lincolnshire West Apartments (http://www.lincolnshirewest-apts.com/ ) came from my part-time Park Forest Post Office job 1966-1969 that paid $15.85-$16.91 an hour in today’s dollars and my part-time jobs working on a Chrysler automobile assembly line in Belvidere (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belvidere_Assembly_Plant) and as a security guard at the University Plaza Dormitory in 1970. The aforesaid enabled me to graduate debt-free from NIU in August of 1970 owning a 1969 Dodge Charger SE.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180315/ISSUE01/180319983
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There was a time when job seekers weighed benefits like medical coverage, retirement accounts and in-office kegerators before accepting an offer. Today, with tens of millions of Americans weighed down by student loan debt, applicants also are judging would-be employers by whether they’ll chip in on those college bill payments. Chicago’s Peanut Butter is there to help companies offer that perk. In 2014, while working as senior director of business development at Sears Holdings, David Aronson, 36, read something that startled him: Most people in their 20s and 30s weren’t making maximum contributions to their 401(k) accounts because their student loan payments – a 2015 college graduate left school owing $34,000 on average – sucked away too much of their disposable income.)

WORLD NET DAILY
— FACEBOOK’S WAR ON ‘CONSERVATIVE’ SITES Joseph Farah on how ‘politically motivated gatekeeper’ manipulates users
http://www.wnd.com/2018/03/facebooks-war-on-conservative-sites/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is true that what I call “independent media” are facing monumental obstacles intentionally placed in their way by companies like Facebook. But Facebook is hardly alone in this regard. Another big player in the war on independent media is Google. This one has had a more dramatically negative impact on WND. You might not know it, but back in the day when Google gave preference to the most viewed breaking news stories on the internet, WND fared very well. But Google changed its algorithms, too. Today, the Google News page, which regularly featured WND content years ago, is devoid of any. In fact, WND is not even viewed as a legitimate news content provider. Why? It might have something to do with the gatekeepers Google has partnered with to define news. One of them is the Southern Poverty Law Center, a far left-wing money machine that is not southern, doesn’t fight poverty but increases it, scarcely practices law and doesn’t respect it, and an outfit about which the word “center” should never be associated in any way. The SPLC considers me a racist and a hate-monger in its annual reports and regards WND, my creation, no more charitably. When I launched WND, then known as WorldNetDaily, more than 20 years ago, the idea was to use this new level playing field with a low barrier to entry to reinvigorate the American press by returning it to what it was intended to be – an important check on government power and overreach, waste, fraud, abuse and corruption in high places. It worked initially. WND was propelled by audiences to become one of the very top-ranked news sites in the world. That was before Google took over pre-eminence among search engines. Since then, Google has made it a mission to ensure any search traffic that goes our way is an accident. I’m not exaggerating. Google news alerts typically don’t even recognize WND stories until 24 hours after they break. The point here is simple. Is the world better off with more diversity of opinion, more reporting from different viewpoints? Facebook doesn’t think so. Google doesn’t think so. And this Digital Cartel has made part of its mission the stamping out of all meaningful ideological diversity in online media.)

— Madigan treating Democratic State Central Committeewoman hopeful like foe – Tom Kacich (DIERSEN: If you asked your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain the following questions, would they know the answer: a) Who represents our congressional district on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC), b) is he/she seeking another term, and c) who has declared their candidacy for the IRP SCC position?)
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2018-03-14/tom-kacich-madigan-treating-democratic-committeewoman-hopeful-foe.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pamella Gronemeyer, who is running for the low-profile position of Democratic state central committeewoman in the 13th Congressional District, hasn’t promised to try to unseat longtime Democratic Party Chairman Michael Madigan. But one of Madigan’s campaign committees, Friends of Michael J. Madigan, has paid for robocalls by Sen. Dick Durbin and AFL-CIO President Mike Carrigan that endorse Gronemeyer’s opponent, Jayne Mazzotti of Taylorville. And Madigan spent thousands of dollars on mail pieces against two other state central committee members endorsed by Our Revolution, a group of Bernie Sanders supporters like Gronemeyer who want to reform the Democratic Party of Illinois. That might include toppling Madigan, who has headed the party since 1998. “I think it’s been a very tough fight with him and Rauner. Certainly, I’m opposed to Rauner,” said Gronemeyer, a pathologist who lives in Glen Carbon and owns SEMC Pathology in Highland. “But I think that maybe it might be time to contemplate a change. I think (Madigan) should want to embrace some of the people who are running on the slate with me. “We are good Democrats. We went to the convention. We supported things. We got out the vote. I think he should embrace us rather than run ads against us. Or come and talk to us even.” Our Revolution includes 13 candidates from around the state running for either state central committeeman or committeewoman. Even if all were elected next Tuesday, they probably couldn’t transform the 36-member state central committee. But Gronemeyer said she “would like to make the party more progressive. The idea is that it’s sort of staid. We had a lot of progressive activity during the Bernie campaign, and we’d just like to expand the progressive part of it. “The party doesn’t reach everybody. There are a lot of young people and other people who sort of feel left out. I think the Illinois Democratic Party could use some new blood, not that I’m new, but I think I’m a young 65.” Gronemeyer said she doesn’t know why the head of the Democratic Party is using robocalls against her or mailers against some of her colleagues. “I don’t know why Madigan would be afraid of us. We don’t want to throw everything away. Gosh darn it, I supported a tax increase because we have to do something with our budget,” she said of the state income tax increase last year. “They shouldn’t be afraid of us. They should want people to be involved, and that’s what our goal is. “Do I want to declare war on him? No, I want to see if we can work together. I want to see how we can work. I don’t think that declaring war is necessarily a good tactic. But I’m not saying I wouldn’t like to see someone else in there either. We need to see who is available and what they offer.” Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the robocalls for Mazzotti are simply “in support of incumbent members of the committee who have been longtime Democratic activists.” He said that recorded calls from U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth also have been used on behalf of incumbent state central committee members. “I don’t think anyone is afraid of them,” Brown said. “But you run campaigns to win, and in the case of Sen. Durbin’s calls and the Carrigan calls and the Duckworth calls we made, it is to support party activists who are running to win. We’re not afraid of anybody.” Mazzotti declined to return messages seeking a comment.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/campaign-workers-illinois-push-protections#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Accusations of harassment from a campaign worker against her supervisor and close aide to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, Kevin Quinn, led to Quinn’s firing last month. Madigan is still struggling with the ripple effects from Alaina Hampton’s claims, with some observers predicting this could be the downfall for the powerful politician. Hampton’s story has also brought attention to how political campaigns deal with sexual harassment. Organizers with a national movement to unionize campaign workers say with the high-pressure and temporary nature of campaign work, there’s often a push to ignore problems like harassment. “We think that (campaigns) are important and working really hard to elect the candidates is something that can change the future of our state,” said Emma LaBounty, an Illinois-based organizer with the Campaign Workers Guild. “But, it’s also something where a lot of times employers will use that as a reason why people should just put their head, work really hard and just not allow themselves to worry about anything else. . . until after election day.” Four Chicago House Democrats recently held a meeting with the Campaign Workers Guild. Campaign workers were invited to talk about their experiences and what they wanted to see change in the workplace. Meanwhile, one of the legislative groups tasked with addressing sexual harassment in Illinois government is looking to change the state election code and Human Rights Act to add protections for campaign workers. A panel appointed by Madigan in the wake of the Hampton’s allegations – U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, Comptroller Susana Mendoza and state Rep. Carol Ammons – will examine the issue as well. The panel won’t handle any investigations, but plans to talk with those who have spoken out about sexual misconduct within the Democratic Party, according to a letter from the three officials released last month. All funding and work for the panel will be independent from the Democratic Party. “This is a long-standing problem,” said state Rep. Kelly Cassidy, a Chicago Democrat and one of the lawmakers who met with LaBounty. “This is something that is endemic to this industry. We are the most nontraditional of nontraditional workplaces.” In an environment that requires considerable work in an often tight time span, it’s common to encounter unclear expectations and confusion about where employees go to report a problem such as sexual harassment, LaBounty said. Often one person is assigned the human resources role in addition to their campaign duties, and that person rarely has training or experience, LaBounty said. In large campaigns, a more formal HR department is more common, but its existence does not remedy the concerns of campaign workers. “Those are the sorts of situations where, while having adequate processes and adequate HR is certainly something that might be a little bit helpful for stabilizing the situation. . . the HR people still work for and are accountable to the employer at the end of the day,” she said. The guild is working in Illinois and several other states to get contracts for campaign workers that include specific clauses protecting them from harassment and requiring each campaign to have a person to file complaints with and a process to move the claim forward to an impartial third-party investigation. So far, the union group has only been contacted by Democratic campaigns, but if a Republican campaign staffer were to approach the group with an interest in unionizing, they would help, LaBounty said. Leaders of the House Task Force on Sexual Harassment are looking to strengthen the complaint reporting process as well. Their proposal includes changes in the state election code that would mandate all political committees maintain discrimination and harassment policies. Additionally, training in sexual harassment and discrimination would be required. “They would have to have some of the things that we require of ourselves in government,” said state Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez, a Republican from Leland Grove. She and Democratic Rep. Barbara Flynn Currie co-chair the task force. By expanding the definition of an employee to include some campaign workers and the definition of employer to include the political committees that run campaigns in the Human Rights Act, Jimenez is hoping the committee will be able to tackle the issue of the campaign misconduct reporting structure. “A lot of what we’re doing right now is diving into our current law to see where we need to make some adjustments to include places for folks not only to get training if they work on a campaign, and if something were to happen, how they could report that up through the process and get a due process situation to hear their complaint,” Jimenez said. The task force has set up an email account, sdhtaskforce@ilga.gov, for the general public to submit suggestions and tips for amending the law to better tackle the nationwide issue of sexual harassment and discrimination.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Today’s immigration That was then. Today, millions of immigrants, including some who make it here legally, assume they don’t have to learn English or assimilate to our culture and values, but, rather, that we accommodate theirs. Moreover, they believe they are entitled to collect welfare, get free health services and even vote in our elections. Naturally, the always dependable ACLU is fighting for illegal aliens to have the right to vote in presidential elections. But can we really place all the blame on immigrants, both illegal and illegal, who after arriving in this country become dependent on the free perks and unconditional services handed out by our government (courtesy of taxpayers) for their living, hand-outs that not even American citizens are privy to. It is, after all, what a great many sources are telling immigrants, people like college professors, newspaper publishers, owners of cable TV stations, Hollywood celebrities and, worst of all, members of Congress. Lazarus’ Words Used to Thwart Trump After President Donald Trump’s executive order on immigration in January of 2017, many critics quickly took up a familiar rallying cry, lifting words from the Statue of Liberty that have for decades represented American immigration: “Give me your tired, your poor / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The main events in a political campaign used to happen in the open: a debate, the release of a major TV ad or a public event where candidates tried to earn a spot on the evening news or the next day’s front page. That was before the explosion of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube as political platforms. Now some of a campaign’s most pivotal efforts happen in the often-murky world of social media, where ads can be targeted to ever-narrower slices of the electorate and run continuously with no disclosure of who is paying for them. March 5 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE WITH COLOR PICTURE: As Ives hits the road against Rauner, her firebrand reputation precedes her – Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-jeanne-ives-republican-governor-campaign-trail-20180301-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: To a large extent, Ives is testing how the DuPage County brand of conservatism plays on the statewide stage. Still focused on abortion and immigration on the campaign trail, she’s dialed back the Alan Keyes-style bomb throwing, even if she’s still not exactly Henry Hyde, the late longtime congressman and abortion rights opponent from Wood Dale who was praised for his ability to disagree without being disagreeable. . .In Peoria, Ives’ digression from abortion to education was in part an attempt to illustrate she cares enough about policy matters to dig into the details, unlike Rauner, who she says has been a “disinterested” governor. Still, Ives’ reputation precedes her, and audiences expect to hear from an aggressive, intense politician. . .It’s that segment of the party that’s now backing Ives’ bid. Chief among them is Dan Proft, a morning radio talk show host and longtime political operative with ties to the Illinois Policy Institute, a libertarian think tank. Proft’s campaign funds have counted as top donors both Rauner, who he’s now opposing, and Lake Forest businessman Richard Uihlein, who jump-started Ives’ campaign with $2.5 million. Introducing Ives at a McHenry County fundraiser early last month, Proft recounted how he’d soured on the governor, who he said had shown a failure to understand “that elections are the means to policy ends.” “I was a supporter of Bruce Rauner’s, I’m a friend of Bruce Rauner’s, I like Bruce,” Proft said, noting that Rauner had donated $4.5 million over the years to Proft’s super political action committee. “But here’s the thing. If you’re going to betray the Republican Party, if you’re going to lie to people, if you’re going to advance the flag of the left, then I don’t need your money and neither does the Republican Party.” Proft called Ives a “once-in-a-generation candidate,” generating cheers from the more than 100 people who snacked on crudites and croissant sandwiches beneath the vaulted wooden rafters of a tony county club near Woodstock. . .Ives, whose turn to speak came after dinner was served and once the governor was long gone, gave a pointed pitch. “You have a choice. This is a governor who doesn’t understand what it means to be a Republican,” Ives said. “We have to take the fight to the Democrats, I do agree with him on that. But Gov. Rauner is the wrong vehicle for that.” Ives offered her usual critique of the governor, and contended that he’d be unable to win the general election without enthusiastic support from conservatives. “The truth is our caucus does not trust him,” Ives said. “And when you can’t trust a commander, then you’ve got to worry about going to battle for him because you’re not sure he has your back.”)
— Rep. Lipinski warns Democrats of ‘tea party of the left’ – Rick Pearson (DIERSEN: Democrats would say the Lipinski is a DINO (Democrat in Name Only). To be a Democrat is to be a morale relativist who believes that their end justifies their end. To be a Democrat is to be a disciple of Saul Alinsky. To be a Democrat is to promote dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot and other vices, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, retaliation, and even worse things. To be a Democrat is to be anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)

— Ives ad compares Rauner to Obama: Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives’ campaign said Sunday it is up with a new TV ad that compares Gov. Rauner to former Democratic President Barack Obama. “Bruce Rauner lies so much he reminds us of another Chicago politician,” a narrator says. The ad then cuts to a June 15, 2009, clip of Obama talking about a concept of the Affordable Care Act that didn’t happen. “If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor. Period,” Obama says. It’s unclear how widespread Ives’ ad will appear. No new advertising contracts for Ives have been posted by Chicago TV stations or cable since last month. – Rick Pearson

— U-46’s approach to bullying doesn’t focus on punishment – Madhu Krishnamurthy (DIERSEN: Who are the biggest bullies and punishers in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois? I should write a book about the biggest bullies and punishers in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who have the most religious, government, political, and/or financial clout. — DIERSEN HEADLINE: What towns have you lived and worked in and for how long? Tom Teune of Wheaton demonizes, denigrates, and condemns Jeanne Ives’ South Dakota just like my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes demonize, denigrate, and condemn my hometown of Crete where I lived 1948-1972. They stress a) that none of my grade school and high school classmates were minorities, b) that back then, Crete was overwhelmingly German-American and Lutheran, and c) that back then, Crete had far less poverty and crime. In my defense, a) I bought a new town home in University Park in 1972 and b) I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years. During that time, virtually all of my superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were Democrats and many of them were minorities. My current critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have little or no experience working for, working with, or supervising minorities or women. Few of my current critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have lived or worked outside of Wheaton, outside of Glen Ellyn, outside of Milton Township, or outside of DuPage County. I lived in Crete 1948-1972, in University Park 1972-1976, in Chicago 1976-1978, and in Wheaton since 1978. I worked in Chicago Heights 1964-1966 and 1970-1972, in Flossmoor in 1966, in Park Forest 1966-1969, in Chicago 1971 and 1973-1997, in Harvey 1972-1973, and in Joliet 1973-1974.)

DAILY NORTHWESTERN
— Rauner, Ives face off in Republican gubernatorial primary – Kristina Karisch (DIERSEN: What are your approval and disapproval ratings, and what reasons do raters give for those ratings? Those who disapprove of me parrot the nasty, if not vicious, if not slanderous things that my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say about me. My critics/opponents in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rauner and the state legislature still remain at odds on a number of issues, and he has remained a deeply unpopular governor across the state. A Morning Consult poll released in January found that Rauner held a 31 percent approval rating in the last quarter of 2017, and a disapproval rating of 55 percent for that same time period.)

— No Senate Confirmation For White Men – Scott Greer (DIERSEN: In early 1971, when I was 22 years old, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. That directly resulted in my accepting a job offer from IRS in early 1971.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-new-business-takes-on-fake-news-1520189066
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The internet broke down barriers by enabling everyone to become a publisher. The unintended consequence was the fake-news epidemic. Teenagers in Macedonia discovered they could make a small fortune from online advertising by concocting outlandish clickbait stories. RT.com, one of the top news sources on YouTube, doesn’t disclose that it is funded by the Russian government, and in 2009 changed its name from Russia Today. One cause of the problem is the weakening of news brands, an effect of social media and search engines. A 2017 study by the Reuters Institute and Oxford, “I Saw the News on Facebook , ” found that most people couldn’t remember the news brand of stories they accessed through social media. That makes it easy for purveyors of knowingly false news or propaganda to fool users by looking like legitimate news publishers. A site called “Denver Guardian” was set up before the 2016 election to show how easy it is to publish knowingly false stories, according to its founder. Before the internet, displays of newspapers and magazines featured well-known brands. No one mistook the National Enquirer for the Philadelphia Inquirer. The internet often feels like a mass of pages ripped out of publications and scattered randomly on the floor.)

— College or Trade School? It’s a Tough Call for Many Teens As worries about student debt rise, states and businesses increasingly push faster, cheaper paths to the workplace; parents are stumped – Douglas Belkin (DIERSEN: Were you considered to be college material? While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). Further, my father had fought type 1 diabetes from age 14. I am sure that many thought that I would soon come down with type 1 diabetes too.)

GOVERNING
— The Widening Cost-of-Living Gap Expenses in different regions are diverging more now than in the recent past. – MIKE MACIAG (DIERSEN: The cost of living in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, and in DuPage County is very high. What did you do to qualify yourself for better paying jobs? I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Stars wore Times Up buttons, Twitter bought a MeToo inspired ad, Walmart and Nike channeled diversity and empowerment, presenters were at the ready with statements. There was even an Oscar salute to activism, via the Oscar nominated song “Stand Up for Something,” sung by Common and Andra Day and introduced by Dave Chappelle. “If you are a nominee tonight who isn’t making history, shame on you,” Kimmel said in his opening monologue, a nod to the anticipation of a more diverse set of nominees and the show’s hopes of social change ahead. He urged winners to say whatever they wanted — whether it be on sexual harassment or gun violence — but he also jokingly offered a Jet Ski to anyone who gave the shortest speech.)

WASHINGTON POST
— Wheaton gun show bans AR-15 sales, landing it at the center of a national gun-control debate – Mark Guarino
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/an-illinois-gun-show-bans-ar-15-sales-landing-it-at-the-center-of-a-national-gun-control-debate/2018/03/04/12502e6a-1fec-11e8-94da-ebf9d112159c_story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The last place one might expect to hear pushback against the National Rifle Association would be at a gun show here, a western suburb of Chicago that reliably votes Republican every election cycle and is the proud home of the Billy Graham Center Museum. . .Organizers halted an advertised raffle that would have awarded an AR-15 to the winner, and vendors were told they would not be allowed to sell the weapon at the monthly show. Frank Cesare — of the Pioneer Valley Sportsman’s Association, which has hosted the show for more than 40 years — said the decision, followed complaints the group received after the Parkland shooting and as gun-control advocates planned to protest. “We did the ban to try to calm the situation down and show them we are willing to work with them,” he said, referring to the protesters. Cesare said that the ban on AR-15s also would remain in place for April’s show and that the club is “waiting to see” what the mood is like before deciding on shows later in the year. But the move has forced the club into the gun culture war that has gained new energy across the United States since Parkland. . .Clustered near the fairgrounds entrance were about 30 protesters who joined on Facebook as “Friends Who March,” a group that emerged from last year’s Women’s March. When organizer Jax West, 46, of Lisle, Ill., heard the AR-15 raffle and sales were canceled, she said she was “really appreciative” of the gesture but wanted to show up anyway to “keep them honest.” West said the protesters are not anti-gun; her partner is an NRA instructor and teaches concealed-carry classes. “We just need sensible gun laws,” West said, noting that the Parkland massacre has allowed both sides of the gun-control debate to have a conversation. “I don’t think that’s a discussion that could have happened. Now that is changing.” The conversation Sunday got a bit rowdy, when a group of counterprotesters assembled across the fairgrounds entrance. Many in NRA caps and holding Second Amendment signs confronted West’s group, arguing that any suggestion of further gun regulation “infringes on our rights,” said Mike Robleski, 64, of Lisle, Ill.)

Tolomei said he was happy the gun control advocates “respected the show floor,” and did not attempt to enter or disrupt the show, which was open to the public at a cost of $5. (FROM THE ARTICLE: But if America must be “a nation of immigrants,” then Americans and their children are not allowed to have a normal nation of assimilated citizens or even normal pocketbook politics, said John Fonte, director of Center for American Common Culture at the D.C.-based Hudson Institute. In a nation of immigrants — legal and illegal — politics is all about enforced “Diversity” where a central elite treats people as members of competing identity groups and then balances each group against the others to achieve desired results, such as a desired percentage of women serving as fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy, Fonte said. In contrast, people in a nation of citizens — both native-borns and assimilated immigrants — are free to participate in the “normal give-and-take of bread-and-butter politics,” in local, state and federal levels, he said.)
