CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— How to control the overwhelming fire hose of news – Clarence Page (DIERSEN: According to my critics/opponents, all government and political news and commentary is fake except for the government and political news and commentary that they put out or bless. Since 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have focused on a) stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out and b) stopping everyone from reading those emails.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: What can we do about “news anxiety,” which many in the psychiatric community say is a real malady, particularly in recent years? If you feel afflicted by it, mental health professionals advise limiting news or social media exposure, especially of the more sensational anxiety-inducing sort. Psychologist Deborah Serani of Adelphi University, writing in Psychology Today, advised steering yourself away from sensational headlines and cable TV news and toward stories that offer depth, explanations and possible solutions to problems at hand. That’s healthy advice. After reporting the latest scandal or atrocity, it is reassuring to know that there is a rational path out of the problem at hand, if only we can persuade our political leaders to follow it.)

For me, it is their promising to oppose anything that promotes welfare, dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, weakening of First or Second Amendment rights, booze, gambling, pot, or other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and/or age discrimination.)

— BEYOND DISGUSTING, BEYOND OUTRAGEOUS: E-Verify absent from immigration policy talks – S.A. Miller (DIERSEN: To oppose E-Verify is to oppose enforcement of America’s immigration laws. To oppose E-Verify is to shout a) that you are a Democrat or a Democrat plant, a Libertarian or a Libertarian plant, a Green or a Green plant, or a RINO and b) that you are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/jan/15/e-verify-absent-from-immigration-policy-talks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: E-Verify has existed since 1996 and is mandatory in eight states. A 2016 study published in the IAZ Journal of Development and Migration found reduced numbers of immigrants living in the U.S. illegally in states with mandatory E-Verify. “E-Verify is a much more efficient way to achieve the goals that are claimed for the border wall,” said Edwin Rubenstein, chief researcher for the nonpartisan Negative Population Growth. An estimated 11.3 million immigrants live in the U.S. illegally with about 8 million working, accounting for about 5 percent of the workforce, according to a 2016 analysis by the Pew Research Center. Compared to their share of the workforce, immigrants living in the U.S. illegally were overrepresented in the agriculture (17 percent) and construction (13 percent) sectors, and in the leisure and hospitality industry (9 percent), the center found. The Chamber of Commerce dropped its opposition to E-Verify in 2013 but only with the stipulation that current employees be exempt. The agriculture industry’s reliance on labor from immigrants living in the U.S. illegally has long kept farm state Republicans from backing mandatory E-Verify without a major expansion of guest worker programs. The farm lobby was divided last year when mandatory E-Verify was included in a House GOP package of immigration reforms, the Securing America’s Future Act. The bill was defeated 192-231, with 41 Republicans joining every Democrat in voting no. While making his border security pitch Monday to the American Farm Bureau Foundation’s annual convention in New Orleans, Mr. Trump stressed that a border wall wouldn’t keep out seasonal workers. “I’m going to make that easier for them to come in and to work the farms,” he said. “But we’re keeping the wrong ones out, OK?” But he’s not talking about E-Verify the way he did on the 2016 campaign trail, when he pledged to “strengthen and expand” the program. With Mr. Trump in the White House, the system has gotten short shrift. It was left out of Mr. Trump’s “four pillars” plan to combat illegal immigration. Only a handful of the 565 companies in the Trump Organization, the president’s business empire, have signed up to use E-Verify, according to a Washington Times analysis. At times, Democrats touted E-Verify as a solution. Mr. Schumer last week listed E-Verify among the top measures for border security that he said were “ironically” suspended during the partial government shutdown. “Border patrol agents are going without pay, E-Verify is off-line, immigration cases are on hold, new immigration judges are not being hired,” he said. In 2009, Mr. Schumer said a “biometric-based employer verification system with tough enforcement and auditing is necessary to significantly diminish the job magnet that attracts illegal aliens to the United States.”)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives says state GOP should go back to basics – Glenn Minnis
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511717576-ives-says-state-gop-should-go-back-to-basics
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) thinks it is time Republican lawmakers have a meeting of the minds to have any chance of saving themselves from themselves. “Republican Party leadership should meet and openly discuss [outgoing Gov. Bruce] Rauner’s wholesale betrayal and ineptitude,” Ives, who narrowly lost to Rauner in the Republican primary, told the DuPage Policy Journal. “The result should be throwing out the current head of the Illinois GOP [IGLOP}, Tim Schneider.” With Illinois in dire straits and many voters desperate for change, Ives said, Republican leaders should consider it a personal insult that the party did as poorly as it did in November’s general election, when Democrats easily captured both chambers of the legislature in Springfield as well as the governorship. “The ILGOP’s massive inability to win campaigns in the worst-run state in the nation is embarrassing,” she said. “Every aspect of our campaigns should be reassessed.” According to the Illinois Review, Ives joined Sean Morrison, Cook County GOP chairman and Cook County commissioner, in calling for immediate action. The two have been publicly backed by John McGlasson, an Illinois GOP State Central Committee member. Ives said many of the party’s issues could be solved by Republicans simply electing to be real Republicans again. “We have a party platform,” she said. “If leaders and candidates would agree to uphold the well-thought-out tenets of the Republican Party platform, there would be no division.” Finally, Ives said, it is time that Republican lawmakers make sure voters are well aware of why the state is as bad off as it is right now. “Our minority status in the legislature gives us an opportunity to place the blame squarely where it belongs, on the Democrats who have run this state into a fiscal mess,” she said.)

— Rauner talks about the current state of the GOP and its future
https://capitolfax.com/2019/01/08/rauner-talks-about-the-current-state-of-the-gop-and-its-future/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaking of politics, Rauner refused to comment on who should run for governor next, but said he hoped “reform-minded leaders” would step forward, saying he would “encourage them” and perhaps help them. He appeared to wave off a direct return to politics for himself, but said it’s “yet to be determined” what he would do. “We live in such volatile times. I can’t predict yet what makes sense.” When asked about former Gov. Jim Edgar’s admonition that the party choose a moderate and Rep. Jeanne Ives’ warning that the party needs to choose someone who will adhere to the party’s conservative platform, Rauner said the two “are both right [and] they’re both partly wrong, and unfortunately I think they’re both part of the problem”… Republicans won’t win unless we’re moderate in many ways on many things. And I certainly consider myself a moderate on many things. If you look at my record, and the things I’ve advocated and the bills I’ve signed, most people would say I’m a moderate. That said, if you’re gonna be a moderate to win elections, but you’re not going to be a reformer and fix the problems, what’s the point of winning? And, in Illinois, Republicans have won, in the 80s and 90s, but then they did the same bad stuff that the Democrats did. Kick the can on pension payments, don’t reform the system, raise taxes with no reforms, over-regulate businesses. If you’re gonna moderate to win and then do the same thing that the guy or gal that you were running against would do, what’s the point? And I think Rep. Ives is correct that you got to have some principles, and you’ve got to be fiscally responsible/conservative… balance budgets. To me, I hope the Republican Party rallies around a unifying message of being pro-taxpayer and pro-job-creator. I think that can be a unifying message and that should define the party. The other things, we’re going to have some vehement disagreements on. Obviously, some of my fellow party members disagree with me on some of my more moderate views. OK, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t all be Republicans and push for responsible things for taxpayers and for job-creators. And he had a few words about the president… “I support most of the President’s policy goals … and I’m appalled by his personal behavior. Just appalled.” Specifically, Rauner says he agrees on ending “illegal” immigration, with a focus on the “illegal”)

  1. Why do Illinois Republicans lose elections? – Illinois Republican candidates are not conservative enough and do not energize enough of the Republican base. Illinois Democrat candidates typically have more campaign funds than Illinois Republican candidates. Districts are too gerrymandered for Illinois Republicans to be competitive in areas where they otherwise should be.

  1. What do you think are the most important things the Illinois Republican Party can do to promote unity? – Promote the IRP platform.

  1. If you were to define or message what it means to be a Republican to the voters of Illinois; what would that message be? – Promote traditional marriage and the traditional family. Promote the right to life. Enforce immigration laws. Promote Second Amendment rights.
  2. What is your first and last name? – David Diersen

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Outgoing Illinois state Sen. Kyle McCarter was (finally) confirmed Wednesday on voice vote to be U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Kenya, according to a tweet by the U.S. Senate Republican Cloakroom staff. McCarter was nominated March 28. Over his lifetime, McCarter has served as a missionary to Kenya. The Republican from Collinsville has held the 54th state Senate seat since 2009. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Congress in 2016. McCarter announced last year he wouldn’t seek re-election and was succeeded by Jason Plummer, also a Republican. State Rep. Dave McSweeney cheered his McCarter’s news on Twitter. “Senator Kyle McCarter is a great conservative leader in Illinois and will be a great Ambassador to Kenya!” – Shia Kapos

There once would have been a time when Stava-Murray would have been a Republican aspirant for political office – except that the Republicans have gone so far overboard to become the political party of rural America that I suspect if she had tried to run in the Republican primary last year, she’d have lost. They wouldn’t want her. She’s a Democrat by default! It may well be that Stava-Murray is showing off her political ignorance and doesn’t fully realize “which side” she’s on. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/government-shutdown-poll_us_5c2d4892e4b0407e9087dc6e
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The HuffPost/YouGov poll consisted of 1,000 completed interviews conducted Dec. 28-30 among U.S. adults, using a sample selected from YouGov’s opt-in online panel to match the demographics and other characteristics of the adult U.S. population. HuffPost has teamed up with YouGov to conduct daily opinion polls. You can learn more about this project and take part in YouGov’s nationally representative opinion polling. More details on the polls’ methodology are available here (http://data.huffingtonpost.com/yougov/methodology). Most surveys report a margin of error that represents some, but not all, potential survey errors. YouGov’s reports include a model-based margin of error, which rests on a specific set of statistical assumptions about the selected sample rather than the standard methodology for random probability sampling. If these assumptions are wrong, the model-based margin of error may also be inaccurate. Click here for a more detailed explanation of the model-based margin of error. NEW YORK TIMES
— Censoring China’s Internet, for Stability and Profit Thousands of low-wage workers in “censorship factories” trawl the online world for forbidden content, where even a photo of an empty chair could cause big trouble. – Li Yan (DIERSEN: Of course, I know exactly what articles my critics/opponents do NOT want me to include links to in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. Of course, I know exactly what comments my critics/opponents do NOT want me to make on those articles. My critics/opponents a) reject planks in the Republican Party platform and/or the Illinois Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, b) reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling and work against those like me who support that resolution, c) focus on destroying those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, d) were defendants in lawsuits that I have filed, and/or e) are operatives or dupes for the aforesaid.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/02/business/china-internet-censor.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Li Chengzhi had a lot to learn when he first got a job as a professional censor. Like many young people in China, the 24-year-old recent college graduate knew little about the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. He had never heard of China’s most famous dissident, Liu Xiaobo, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died in custody two years ago. Now, after training, he knows what to look for — and what to block. He spends his hours scanning online content on behalf of Chinese media companies looking for anything that will provoke the government’s wrath. He knows how to spot code words that obliquely refer to Chinese leaders and scandals, or the memes that touch on subjects the Chinese government doesn’t want people to read about. Mr. Li, who still has traces of youthful acne on his face, takes his job seriously. “It helps cleanse the online environment,” he said. For Chinese companies, staying on the safe side of government censors is a matter of life and death. Adding to the burden, the authorities demand that companies censor themselves, spurring them to hire thousands of people to police content.)

— Do brand politics impact consumer purchases? It’s complicated Multiple variables may affect how consumers react to brands that take a stand. – Greg Sterling (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, companies talk and act like they are operatives or dupes for the Democrat Party. https://marketingland.com/do-brand-politics-impact-consumer-purchases-its-complicated-252772
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A majority of consumers (63 percent), according to a new survey from SAP, say they prefer to purchase holiday gifts from brands that support specific social causes. This echoes earlier surveys that argue consumers increasingly want brands to take public social and political positions. The emerging consensus among marketers is that in the current climate brands are no longer able to “remain on the sidelines” and are compelled to stake out positions on controversial social issues. The most recent, high-profile example of this was Nike’s Just Do It anniversary campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, which was controversial but actually helped Nike financially and with key audiences.)

The Holman Rule, first established in 1876 and reintroduced in the 115th Congress, enables lawmakers to cut individual salaries, programs or agency office sizes in appropriations language. The rule was never successfully used during the two years it was recently in effect, but lawmakers have tried to cut the salary of the Western Area Power Administrator and to remove the Congressional Budget Office’s budget analysis division by invoking the rule.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “This isn’t a slam dunk,” said Moylan, who’s concerned selling marijuana in stores could escalate crime, crashes and addiction rates. “The process should be slowed … I don’t appreciate them trying to steamroll this.” . . . The plan conceptually would allow Illinois residents age 21 and older to buy one ounce of marijuana at a time from a licensed shop and grow up to five plants. The state sales tax of 6.25 percent could apply to purchases, and municipalities would have the final say on whether businesses could operate in their towns. . . State’s attorneys Robert Berlin in DuPage County, Joe McMahon in Kane County and Patrick Kenneally in McHenry County, all Republicans, oppose legalization. “It has a significant potential to increase traffic-related deaths,” Kenneally said. . .AAA Traffic Safety Foundation research found the percentage of drivers in fatal crashes who recently used marijuana spiked to 17 percent from 8 percent from 2013 to 2014, the motorist advocacy group reported. — Poll: 47% of Americans blame Trump for government shutdown – Reuters (DIERSEN: In Illinois, outside of Cook County, anti-Trumps and Trump-haters blame Republican Precinct Committeemen (RPC) for Trump being elected in 2016 and for what Trump has done since then. To justify that logic, they have to stress that RPCs put people in political offices who promote Trump. More specifically, that RPCs elect Republican township and county party officers, Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) members, an IRP National Committeeman, and an IRP National Committeewoman who promote Trump. IRP SCC members elect IRP Chairmen. IRP Chairmen appoint IRP Co-Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, Secretary, and Treasurer. To what extent do the aforesaid promote Trump? How much clout does your RPC have? What is your RPC’s weighted vote? Is your RPC a) the chairman of a Republican township or county party committee, b) a Republican township or county party officer, c) an IRP SCC member, d) an IRP officer, e) the IRP National Committeeman, f) the IRP National Committeewoman?)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes focus on driving out of Illinois, out of DuPage County, out of Milton Township, out of Wheaton, and out of my precinct those who are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, married, older, non-poor, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time, past and present union members, past and present federal employees, federal retirees, America-nameplate vehicle owners, those who are childless, those who are pet-less, etc.)
https://wealthyretirement.com/retirement-planning/two-minute-retirement-solution/loneliness-retirement-health-risk-factor/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But new research by AARP reports that as much as 59% of the decline in both physical and mental health that happens in retirement is due to one factor, and it is somewhat controllable… Loneliness. An AARP study reported that 35% of adults older than 45 are lonely. And that condition is responsible for a 45% increase in risk of death, the development of brain biomarkers associated with Alzheimer’s and an increased need for long-term care. The isolation that leads to loneliness not only takes too many of us too soon but also is the major contributor to the healthcare costs that bankrupt many retirees. But it doesn’t have to be a death sentence. Taking daily microsteps to correct the conditions that lead to isolation can make a difference. The first step is to recognize that you are lonely and want more friends and greater contact with friends and family. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, and it gives us a schedule and a reason to get out of the house.)

My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

https://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20181220/editorial-pritzker-should-set-goal-of-making-tollway-more-patronage-proof
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Today, we share our ideas for true tollway reform: Reduce political hiring. Patronage hiring is permitted in too many jobs, which are called “Rutan-exempt” in Illinois legal shorthand. That allowed the tollway to flood the agency with highly-paid top Republican insiders. More of these jobs needs to be designated as patronage free so they go to the most qualified, not the most connected.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Richard Porter was the fourth person Gov. Bruce Rauner approached to run for governor. The Chicago attorney who also serves as an Illinois RNC National Committeeman told POLITICO it wasn’t so gauche as to be an outright ask. “I would have described it as more of an aside in a strategy conversation focused more on how he could win (rather) than an offer,” Porter said of their telephone call. Rauner also approached state Sen. Karen McConnaughay, Cubs owner Todd Ricketts and then-GOP attorney general candidate Erika Harold. Rauner “was in to win,” Porter said. “He was never a quitter. To the contrary. He was always focused on finding the best path to winning. And if that meant he should fall on his sword, then he was willing to do that — and give millions of his money away to boot. I think Rauner’s comments on this have been misunderstood.” Porter’s referring to political watchers who say Rauner’s courting of others was a desperate act by a candidate who thought he’d lose. But Porter says Rauner just wanted to be assured of a win. – Shia Kapos

— Short-term senator gets committee leadership pay – Bernard Schoenburg
https://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20181219/bernard-schoenburg-short-term-senator-gets-committee-leadership-pay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Republican state senator appointed to the legislature to fill a 45-day gap is getting not only his base pay, but $1,270 extra to be minority spokesperson on a committee that hasn’t met since months before he took office and has no meetings planned. Sen. YADAV “NICK” NATHWANI of Glen Ellyn was sworn in Nov. 26 after being appointed to the vacancy left with the resignation of former Sen. CHRIS NYBO, R-Elmhurst, who lost the Nov. 6 election to Democrat SUZY GLOWIAK of Western Springs in the 24th Senate District. In addition to filling out Nybo’s term, Nathwani is listed as minority spokesman of the Senate’s financial institutions committee. That committee hasn’t met since May 23. Nathwani will be out of office when Glowiak is sworn in on Jan. 9. Base pay for legislators is $67,836 annually, and committee chairs and minority spokespeople get an extra $10,327 annually. For his 45 days, Nathwani will thus get about $8,360 in base pay and about $1,270 in pay for his committee position. I asked JASON GERWIG, spokesman for Senate GOP Leader BILL BRADY, R-Bloomington, if it was right for Brady to name Nathwani to the leadership post for such a short stint in the Senate and when the committee is apparently not meeting. “Unfortunately, we don’t control the scheduling process of when committees meet,” Gerwig responded. “Maybe if we get a fair map that’ll change someday.” Gerwig noted that Nathwani served the last three days of the veto session and will be there for session on Jan. 7 and 8, before the swearing in on Jan. 9 of the new General Assembly. A message left for at Nathwani’s Senate office went unanswered. He is chief financial officer of Professional Paving & Concrete Co. in Glen Ellyn, a Milton Township trustee and vice-chair of the Milton Township GOP. Nathwani came on my radar due to a something published on the Chicago Tribune website headlined: “From the community: New Senator seeks input from residents.” The author of the piece, which quotes Nathwani encouraging constituents to “reach out to me during this time to discuss the state and local issues important to them,” was listed only as “Community Contributor tbryers.” That would be TIM BRYERS of Elmhurst, who is on the Senate GOP communications staff. He said he is a community contributor to the Tribune, and said in this case, he posted a news release. He said other communications people, as well as representatives of local community groups, use that and similar sites to get out community information. The Trib website says that community contributors are registered users of TribLocal.com and Chicagotribune.com who have photos, articles, announcements and local events to share. The site is not for advertisers. Bryers also said that with many newspapers having fewer reporters than in the past, such openings for outside digital content allows information to get to the public. The Tribune used to have two reporters based in Springfield and there was one in recent years, but since MONIQUE GARCIA left in August to join a public affairs firm, nobody from the Trib is based in the capital city. MARISA KOLLIAS, spokeswoman for the Tribune, had no comment on the status of the Springfield opening, but did say the Tribune “is committed to state government coverage.” As to having a news release from a state staffer published on the Trib website as community news, Kollias had no comment.)

JOURNAL GAZETTE TIMES COURIER
— How to Properly Use Internships to Find Employees – Daniel B. Kline (DIERSEN: GAO audits IRS. When I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates did not want me to transfer, but failing that, they wanted me to transfer as a GS-4 Step 1 (currently $32,978/year) Intern, that is, to suffer a $58,902/year (64%) pay cut in today’s dollars. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. They viciously demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact a) that I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year, b) that much of what IRS Revenue Officers do is similar to what GAO Analysts do, c) that I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, d) that I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and e) that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul. They were furious that I transferred with me almost 12 years of federal seniority, 30 days of unused vacation days, and 130 unused sick days.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Although her office doesn’t have any specific duties outside of being 2nd in line and doing what the governor wants, Sanguinetti and her staff have done a lot on the issue of local government consolidation, reducing LLC fees (she took the lead on that before Rauner), rural education and healthcare, and aggressively working to fight against and recommend the best policies that help those suffering from opioids. AMERICAN GREATNESS
— Immigration Is Making U.S. Poorer and Dirtier – Pedro Gonzalez

Immigration Is Making U.S. Poorer and Dirtier

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As a matter of fact, immigration is making our country poorer—save for those who profit from cheap labor—for one simple reason: we are absorbing masses of poor people who remain concentrated in lower-skilled, low-paying jobs. Many of those poor, whether they arrive illegally or by chain migration, happen to be minorities, and in particular Latinos. Latinos experience the third-highest rate of poverty behind blacks and Native Americans—but as the second-largest ethnic group in the United States, they constitute a greater number of poor than blacks and Native Americans combined (10.8 million, 9 million, 700,000, respectively), according to the Center for American Progress. So, yes, immigration is bringing in disproportionate numbers of poor people and making America poorer.)

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/12/19/paul-ryan-immigration-rules-should-offer-jobs-to-anyone/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Retiring Paul Ryan today lamented his failure to deliver a global supply of migrant labor to businesses and investors — regardless of ordinary Americans’ desire for decent wages. Ryan’s failure was ensured by Donald Trump’s 2016 election — and so Trump’s “Hire American” policy is now allowing Americans’ wages to rise amid a shortage of blue-collar workers and protests by business leaders. Ryan’s lament came as his final efforts to outsource more Americans jobs to foreign workers were discarded in the confused negotiations over Congress’s failure to pass a 2019 budget for the Department of Homeland Security. That defeat for Ryan was missed by media coverage over funding for the border wall.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Indeed, when Trump won the presidential election, the hard-line Freedom Caucus stood at the ready to push Ryan out of office for jabbing Trump on the campaign trail. The only reason Trump kept him around was because Vice President Mike Pence and other pro-Ryan Republicans argued in favor of having a true legislative tactician and wonk shepherding his priorities through a convoluted Congress. Had Ryan forcefully criticized Trump during his presidency, the leader of the party might have come after him, Ryan’s allies say. “That’s the toughest job in American politics,” said former Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), an Illinois Republican who lost in the midterm election.)

BLOOMBERG
— Americans Earning Over $200,000 Are Flocking to These Neighborhoods Everyone knows wealth is concentrating. This is where the rich are going.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-12-18/these-are-the-neighborhoods-attracting-america-s-richest

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Cook County, Illinois Cook County, which includes the county seat of Chicago, is home to the No. 1 and No. 7 fastest-growing concentrations of $200,000-plus households. No. 1 is, ironically, the area around where the Cabrini-Green public housing projects once stood. Cabrini-Green was notorious for violent crime, poverty and de facto racial segregation until its demolition beginning in the 1990s at the behest of the Chicago Housing Authority. Even back then, authorities fretted that redevelopment plans might displace low-income families. They were right to be worried. Two decades later, the area’s concentration of $200,000-plus households has skyrocketed from zero to 39 percent. For some of the longtime residents who remain, the neighborhood’s transformation has been isolating. . .About 20 miles to the north, Cook County has another top 10 neighborhood: the Glen, in the suburb of Glenview. Converted from what used to be Naval Air Station Glenview, the planned community has hundreds of families living in condos, town houses and single-family homes that go for as much as $2.5 million each, according to realtor Margaret Ludemann.)

USA TODAY
— ‘Unscrupulous politicians’ blamed for worst year on record for journalist killings – Kim Hjelmgaard (DIERSEN: I should write a book about politicians and others who have demonstrated the most hated of me.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The hatred of journalists that is voiced, and sometimes very openly proclaimed, by unscrupulous politicians, religious leaders and businessmen has tragic consequences on the ground and has been reflected in this disturbing increase in violations against journalists,” said Reporters Without Borders’ Secretary-General Christophe Deloire. “Amplified by social networks, which bear heavy responsibility in this regard, these expressions of hatred legitimize violence, thereby undermining journalism, and democracy itself, a bit more every day,” he said.)

AUSTIN STATESMAN
— DISGUSTING, TRAGIC: Texas marijuana advocates set sights on 2019 legislative session – Bob Sechler (DIERSEN: QUESTION: Who does not want Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee (SCC) member Bob Grogan to appoint me to the 2020 IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee, like IRP SCC member Ron Smith appointed me to in 2008? ANSWER: Those who reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, and/or Second Amendment planks in the 2016 IRP Platform. Those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
https://www.statesman.com/news/20181213/texas-marijuana-advocates-set-sights-on-2019-legislative-session
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2018 platform of the state’s Republican Party is among their evidence. It includes a plank calling for civil, instead of criminal, penalties for possessing small amounts of pot, as well as one calling for expansion of the Compassionate Use Act “to allow doctors to determine the appropriate use of cannabis to certified patients.” In addition, Gov. Greg Abbott for the first time recently voiced support for reducing penalties for some pot possession — albeit not all the way to a mere civil offense. Abbott, a Republican, said during his successful re-election campaign against Democrat Lupe Valdez that he’s open “to talking to the Legislature about … reducing the penalty for possession of 2 ounces or less from a Class B misdemeanor to a Class C misdemeanor” because he doesn’t want to see “jails stockpiled with people who have possession of a small amount of marijuana.”)
