(FROM THE LETTER: Thanks to Matt Vespa of townhall.com for pointing out examples of the lunacy of political correctness in academia today. Of course we know that this insanity is due in part to teachers imbuing a belief in young students that America is just not a very nice country. Of course, this too is yet another example of the progressive-left convincing folks that expecting foreigners who we welcome into this country to assimilate is just plain racist, mean and nasty. Democrats and the progressive-left in this country apparently are not able to comprehend the irony of their ideology. Perhaps that is why they are not paralyzed by what should for all intents and purposes be debilitating “cognitive dissonance.” Please look it up and then reflect on their actions, the irony of which should keep them up at night. It apparently does not because, after all, they have good intentions and so the often damaging results of their well intended actions and deeds are irrelevant to them. Crazy right?)

ILLINOIS FAMILY INSTITUTE
— Is White Privilege merely “Fake News?” – Oliver Perry (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I have always benefited immensely from White Privilege. They hint/imply/argue/shout that were it not for White Privilege, I never would have gotten the jobs that I did doing yard work, delivering newspapers, washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assembly line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collecting delinquent federal taxes, and auditing federal agencies. But wait, they demonize, denigrate, and condemn all the aforesaid jobs as being so “bad” a) that they themselves would never take those jobs and b) that no minority, no female, no younger person, and no veteran should ever have to take those jobs.)
https://illinoisfamily.org/education/white-privilege-merely-fake-news/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The White Privilege concept claims that white people have certain invisible advantages. These advantages might merely be the result of acquiring income, education, or a residence in “nice” neighborhood. A Department of Education study states that “Black students are suspended and expelled at a rate three times greater than white students.” But was the study covering disparities in just one school? Or were some data gathered from schools in peaceful communities and other data from schools serving as substitute gang battlegrounds? Again, all of the details matter. An important part of the White Privilege concept is that you can’t lose it, avoid it, or fix it. You’re guilty of racism just by living. This is important for activists, for guilty people are easily manipulated, and you’ll keep doing whatever the accusers ask for. Finally, the White Privilege concept creates its own definition of racism. The common definition of racism judges a person on their thoughts, words and deeds. The White Privilege version says that you’re guilty because the accuser doesn’t like how society is currently structured. These advocates are moving the goalposts to encourage a political and social reengineering of America. So what do we know about White Privilege? It was invented to push people into accepting a socialist or Marxist society. You are accused of being racist, but not for anything you did. There is no way for you to fix this so-called racism. Your only hope is to join your accusers and reshape society to their plans. That sounds like “fake news” to me. It is guilt inducing without cause. Throw it out.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: H-1B visas allow employers to bring in skilled foreign workers; about 85,000 will be given out this year. The visas are in high demand and given out by lottery. It can take six months or longer for an application to be reviewed. But the government announced Friday that, as of April 3, it will suspend the “premium processing” option, which ensures an application will be reviewed within 15 days. It costs $1,225. Trump has accused companies of abusing the H-1B program as a way to hire foreign workers who take jobs away from Americans, at lower salaries. The Trump administration says it’s doing away with quick-turn processing so it can sort through a large backlog of applications and try to “reduce overall H-1B processing times.”)

BRADENTON HERALD
— Progressives wants to silence foes – PATRICK NEYLAN, BRADENTON
http://www.bradenton.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article136275133.html
(FROM THJE LETTER: After four years of national malaise, conservatives were devastated by the presidential election results of 2012 even though they recaptured the House and Senate. While this was a definite setback for Democrats, the incumbent president defiantly declared he had a phone and a pen to enact his vision for America. The progressive reaction to the presidential election of 2016 is something to behold. Unlike conservatives, they destroy property, hold hate rallies, and spread a blizzard of lies, vulgar invective and fake news. The left wants to silence or destroy anyone who doesn’t fit in. They use terms such as the subject is settled, the discussion is over or the subject is not politically correct. This helps their lemmings avoid the headache of independent thought or objective inquiry. The national debt is never mentioned because it might cause the naïve to realize that America cannot afford the benefits that we currently enjoy. World-citizen progressives lobby for open borders and amnesty; this will provide excellent competition for the race to the bottom in jobs, wages and benefits, etc. Progressives’ idea of multiculturalism supports anti-western cultures and laws which document (in writing) a terrible human rights and antidemocratic record. They call it diversity. Qualified conservative professionals have about a one in 14 chance of gaining employment in the news media or academia. Does that sound democratic to you? Before this bias destroys America, laws like Equal Employment Opportunity must be passed. Perhaps readers will notice that world-citizen progressives avoid addressing the economy, existing unenforced laws, patriotism, borders, security, debt control and time-honored ethics, etc. What do they really have in mind, not even their lemmings know?)

Congressman Randy Hultgren announced Friday afternoon that one of his staff members quit this week because she was worried about her safety at the office. The police chief in Campton Hills confirmed they have handled a few minor calls. There has been no violence at any of the town hall meetings held across the country, but the congressman says safety is the reason he won’t hold town hall meetings. Republicans have faced protests at home, including Hultgren. He has decided for now to meet with constituents only in small groups, not town halls. “They get frustrated having individual time with me, or a small group meeting with me. They want to have something that is more theatrical. I just don’t know if that is beneficial right now,” he said. Hultgren represents part of McHenry, Kane and Kendall counties. “We just want to make sure that everybody is safe, that we have this respect in the process that we can listen from each other, learn from each other, disagree at times but with a level of respect,” he said. Although Hultgren used former congresswoman Gabby Giffords’ shooting as an example, Giffords recently released her own response, saying politicians must face their constituents and hold town hall meetings. Congressman Peter Roskam, who represents the far northwest and western suburbs, has also had protests in his districts. Instead of town halls, he’s using phone meetings. “Rather than having a meeting with 200 people that are essentially shouting at one another, I thought it was more helpful to meet with 18,000 people on the phone to have a wider range of opinion and much more feedback,” he said. The protests, for some, harken back to the early days of the Tea Party. Senator Dick Durbin, who met with Tea Partiers at the time, sold an old boxing quote to put it in perspective. “They used to say something about Joe Lewis, the great heavyweight champion, they used to say something about his opponents: they can run but they can’t hide. The same is true about members of Congress. You can avoid your constituents for some period of time, but ultimately they get the last word in the election,” Durbin said. Voters have criticized Republican lawmakers for shirking their duty to their constituents and continue to push for town hall meetings. Experts said things will only get worse for lawmakers because soon they will start voting on laws, and voters will follow how their representatives are voting.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-age-bias-edit-plummer-terkel-scully-0304-jm-20170303-story.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Yes, this is often said to be the Age of the Millennial. And virtually every discussion of generations quickly references baby boomers. But assigning stereotypes to different age groups isn’t just annoying. It’s often misleading. Case in point: America’s concept of retirement has changed. Many people are working well into their 70s and 80s. Insert here your own story about the 83-year-old co-worker who never got sick and was always the first to arrive each day. And workers with that depth of life and work experience bring to the table a wealth of institutional and subject knowledge about their fields. That’s a wellspring that millennials can tap into, and employers should covet. Too often, they don’t. Ageism — that is, discrimination based on someone’s age — is rampant in today’s workplace. According to a study by AARP in 2013, 3 of every 5 older workers reported having seen or experienced age discrimination at work. Age discrimination complaints brought to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission have jumped 26 percent over the last decade, from 16,548 in 2006 to 20,857 last year. Madigan is right to take up this issue, and we hope the job search firms that have been warned make the right fixes. A spokeswoman for CareerBuilder told the Tribune’s Alexia Elejalde-Ruiz that the company “is committed to helping workers of all ages find job opportunities, and is fixing this unfortunate oversight.” That’s good to hear. After all, what difference does it make if someone’s 23, 43, 63 or 83 — as long as he or she can get the job done well. Mark Twain put it best: “Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”)

(FROM THE LETTER: Each year it seems that gambling becomes more pervasive. In Illinois, video gambling sites have increased significantly in the past 18 months, and there is serious discussion about expanding the number of casinos. For most people gambling is entertaining, but for the problem gambler it can eventually lead to the loss of a home, job, family and friends. Common signs of a problem gambler often include lying to your partner about where you’ve been and how you’ve spent your money; lost sleep due to gambling stress and anxiety; reducing time one spends with family and work to gamble; feeling guilty about gambling; trying to cut back in gambling without success. Gambling disorders are treatable, but professional help is needed. Renz Addiction Counseling Center is offering free gambling assessments throughout 2017 and free treatment during National problem Gambling Awareness Month this March at our Two American Way location in Elgin. For more information on Renz Center’s problem gambling services, visit www.RenzCenter.org or call the Center at (847) 742-3545.)

ILLINOIS TIMES
— The vanishing Statehouse press corps  In an era of mainstream news cutbacks, ideological media step in – Tara McClellan McAndrew  (DIERSEN: Since 2000, your GOPUSA Illinois Editor has increasingly stepped in a) to counter the media’s ever-increasingly pro-Democrat slant and b) to fill Republican communication voids.)
http://illinoistimes.com/article-18344-the-vanishing-statehouse-press-corps.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As mainstream coverage of government has decreased, new media have risen to fill the void. According to the Pew’s 2014 study, there was a boom across the nation in “ideological” organizations covering state government after the Great Recession. That includes outlets funded by politicians or partisan groups which can be designed to look like mainstream media. A couple examples are the Illinois Policy Institute and Local Government Information Services, which have links to the Republican Party. Currently, there are no known media outlets covering Illinois government that have ties to other parties. In 2015, the Illinois Policy Institute, which already ran Illinois News Network, purchased Illinois Radio Network. It covers state government, among other topics. In 2013 and 2014, the Institute’s Illinois News Network tried to get press credentials from the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois Senate, but was denied because of its relationship to a partisan, lobbying group – the Institute. The Institute sued and took its case all of the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, but lost. State Journal-Register reporter Bernard Schoenburg has written several columns about Republican ties to the Institute and Local Government Information Services, including donations Governor Bruce Rauner made to both groups, totaling at least $3 million. Local Government Information Services has online websites with articles about communities around the state. One called the Sangamon Sun covers the Springfield area. On Feb. 13, its headline was: “State Comptroller Mendoza added to BossMadigan.com,” referring to an Illinois Republican Party site. Some ideological media, like the Illinois News Network, make their audio and articles available for free. In an Oct. 7, 2015, column, Schoenburg wrote: “Any of those papers or stations using that content and not clearly identifying the source as the Illinois Policy Institute are doing a disservice to their readers and listeners.” Free content is very attractive to small radio stations or newspapers with limited staff and budgets, Wheeler says. “Having fewer Statehouse reporters and fewer independent, unbiased sources of news committed to the consistent practices of journalism will make it easier for the folks who are peddling the slant to have their stuff accepted and used.” In a democracy, media have an important task, Wheeler adds, especially at a time when the federal government is making many decisions that could affect the responsibilities of state governments. “The First Amendment wasn’t created with the idea that we have to help people who are going to be running newspapers to make a lot of money.” As one Statehouse reporter I talked to put it: “Somebody has to cover the news!”)

FEDERATION FOR AMERICAN IMMIGRATION REFORM
— The Impact of New and Expanded  E-Verify Measures on Unemployment Rates Since the Great Recession  (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, all employers should be required to use E-Verify. If an employer does not use E-Verify, a) it shouts that it wants cheap labor, b) it shouts that it hires and exploits illegals, c) it shouts that it despises if not hates American workers, d) it shouts that it encourages people to come to America illegally, e) it shouts that it encourages people to stay in America illegally, and f) it shouts that it encourages people to bring other people to America illegally.)
http://www.fairus.org/issue/the-impact-of-new-and-expanded-e-verify-measures-on-unemployment-rates-since-the-great-recession
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress created E-Verify in 1996, and launched the program in 1997, to assist employers in verifying new employees’ eligibility to work in the United States. The stated goal is to provide fast and reliable verification by comparing an employee’s I-9 form to U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration databases.(1)
Though easy to use and accessible to all employers, participation in the E-Verify program is not required by federal law. However, the 2011 Supreme Court case Chamber of Commerce v Whiting affirmed that states may constitutionally pass legislation requiring some or all employers within their jurisdiction to use E-Verify. Unfortunately, most states have left its use optional, or only require certain employers to use the program.(2) Does E-Verify Work? The E-Verify program protects job opportunities for American workers by ensuring that employers using the program only hire individuals who are authorized by the federal government to work in the United States. Opponents of E-Verify often claim, however, that the program’s 99.7 percent verification accuracy rate isn’t reliable enough and assert that any false-positive returns will remain uncorrected, even when appealed.(3) Some opponents go as far as to argue that requiring widespread usage of the program will result in increased unemployment rates. To determine whether state E-Verify laws impact job markets after their implementation, this report examines the U-6 unemployment rate(4) in states one year after instituting or expanding E-Verify requirements. The U-6 unemployment rate includes discouraged job-seekers who have stopped searching for employment and those who are working part time for purely economic reasons – as opposed to those who may be working part time by choice.)

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2017/03/03/illinois-congressman-uses-derogatory-term-when-describing-raucous-town-halls.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “While there was no malicious intent, I regret that my words may have distracted from an important point,” Bost said. “When the booing and shouting drowns out the conversation we’re trying to have with our constituents, it becomes that much harder to govern.” Some Republicans in Congress have participated in rowdy town halls in which crowds have expressed concerns about President Donald Trump’s policies. A few, like Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, have been shouted down and booed. Bost described the town halls as “out of control, which means you don’t actually get to talk to people and listen, and we’re looking for ways to do that.” In an editorial, the Southern Illinoisan noted that the people of his district want to have their voices heard, and doing it over the phone or the internet just won’t do. It went on to say, “It is part of his job description to, from time to time, take the heat. A leader should not be reluctant to meet with his constituents personally.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Journalists Demand Access, but Sometimes They’re Selective   An Illinois reporter Scott Reeder lost his press credential when he left the legacy media to work for a nonprofit. – JACOB HUEBERT
https://www.wsj.com/articles/journalists-demand-access-but-sometimes-theyre-selective-1488498959
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The national press was outraged after reporters from CNN, the New York Times, Politico, BuzzFeed and the Los Angeles Times were kept out of an off-camera White House press briefing last week. CNN anchor Jake Tapper called the action “un-American.” Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron said it was “appalling” and “undemocratic.” National Press Club president Jeffrey Ballou labeled the exclusion “deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable.” Their concerns are valid: Government officials can silence critics by picking and choosing who gets access. But few have noted that the Trump administration’s actions are far from unprecedented. Similar scenes have played out at all levels of government and media, yet the press rarely object so vociferously. Worse, mainstream outlets sometimes are complicit in helping the government limit the access of other journalists. A prime example comes from Illinois. As an attorney for the Liberty Justice Center, I represented a veteran journalist who was denied statehouse press credentials in Springfield. Scott Reeder had been a reporter and editor for more than 25 years. He spent the first 20 years of his career at newspapers in Texas, Nevada and Illinois, racking up journalism awards along the way. He became a well-known fixture in the Illinois Capitol. Then he decided to start a statehouse news service to keep doing the same work he had always done. Joining with the Illinois Policy Institute, a government watchdog organization, Mr. Reeder planned to launch his new venture in 2013. But when he applied for statehouse press credentials, Mr. Reeder got the cold shoulder from lawmakers who decide which outlets can cover them. Mr. Reeder was a tough reporter, ruffling feathers of politicians on both sides of the aisle—as journalists should—and his application was denied because of his association with the institute. Officials determined that under the legislature’s rules Mr. Reeder was no longer entitled to a pass because the institute was registered as a lobbyist and wasn’t “primarily” engaged in news reporting. But the legislature never excluded reporters from for-profit newspapers simply because their parent companies lobbied and engaged in other businesses besides news. The Chicago Tribune had no trouble getting credentials when its then-owner, the Tribune Co., hired a firm to lobby on its behalf and operated businesses unrelated to news, such as the Chicago Cubs. We challenged Mr. Reeder’s exclusion from the press gallery on First Amendment grounds. The courts declined to consider the claim, holding that “absolute legislative immunity” precludes lawsuits over credentialing decisions. The precedent was a 1975 case involving access to the congressional press galleries. In 1972 the Standing Committee of Correspondents had voted to exclude writers from Consumer Reports because the magazine was published by a nonprofit advocacy group rather than a traditional news organization. The publisher sued. A federal judge ruled that the exclusion violated the First Amendment, which prohibits the government from arbitrarily keeping reporters out of press facilities based on who employs them or the ideas they advocate. But the decision was overturned on appeal. The judges held they could not interfere with the internal operations of Congress, even to vindicate the First Amendment. In the Consumer Reports case, it was journalists who made the decision to exclude. The Standing Committee, to which Congress delegates authority over credentials, is composed of journalists from traditional news organizations (including, in some years, The Wall Street Journal). As for Mr. Reeder, he got little support from fellow reporters. Some even published articles attempting to delegitimize his work because he was no longer employed by a legacy media outlet. The White House has not always provided equal access either. In 2009 the Obama administration tried to exclude Fox News reporters from a round of interviews with a Treasury official. A top White House staffer had recently described Fox as “not really a news station.” In that case, other media organizations lined up behind Fox, and the White House eventually relented. But the incident didn’t get nearly as much attention as last week’s brouhaha. It’s good that the media united in objection to the Trump administration last week. Perhaps the incident will serve as an important civics lesson about the dangers of the government granting special privileges to select media outlets. Here’s to hoping the media will continue to advocate equal access, just as forcefully as they are now, for journalists of all stripes covering all levels of government.)

— Surviving Trump: Ex-Blagojevich aide’s tips for White House staff  (DIERSEN: Have you been fired from a paid job, and if so, why?  Constructively, my Democrat GAO superiors fired me in 1997 when I was 49 years old by forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” because since 1988, I had been an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged GAO with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation and because I had complained about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and retaliation before then. My Chicago Heights Firestone Store Manager fired me in 1971 immediately after I told him that I had accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile.  Constructively, my Democrat Park Forest Post Office superiors fired me in 1969 because I could only commit to be available to work Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays, and all days that NIU was not in session.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/a-former-blagojevich-aides-survival-guide-for-trump-staffers/amp/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Absorb the “boss’ anger and craziness.” Focus on doing your job well, and ignore the “circus in the West Wing.” And don’t be afraid to tell the president “no” — if it means stopping “stupid things from happening.”  That’s Bradley Tusk’s advice for newly appointed members of the Trump Administration. “If you’re not willing to fight — and to be fired for it — don’t take the job,” Tusk writes in an article published on inc.com. Tusk figures he knows what he’s talking about. At 29, he was named Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s deputy governor, a position for which he says he was “totally unqualified.”)

The Urbana campus has 5.4% black enrollment, with higher percentages at the Chicago and Springfield campuses. WINNETKA PATCH
— New Trier Civil Rights Seminar Draws Ire From Right  Feb. 20 school board meeting targeted by supporters and opponents of NTHS “racial civil rights” curriculum. – Jonah Meadows
http://patch.com/illinois/winnetka/new-trier-civil-rights-seminar-draws-ire-right
(LAURIE HIGGINS POST: Here are the three primary defenses of All-School Seminar Day offered by its ardent supporters: 1. Most community members support it. 2. Students are permitted to dissent. 3. Racism exists. First, it shouldn’t matter how many or few oppose it. Minority voices should be honored. Second, no one is arguing that the seminar prohibits discussion, debate, or dissent. Opponents are arguing that a good debate (and sound pedagogy) requires that students be exposed to the best arguments from the best thinkers on all sides of arguable issues. Conservative students should have their views reinforced and challenged by session speakers and materials, and liberal students should have their views reinforced and challenged by session speakers and materials. Third, no one is arguing that racism doesn’t exist. What seminar critics are arguing is that the seminar approaches the manifold issues surrounding race from a leftist perspective. Surely the seminar organizers and supporters know that blacks like Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Jason Riley, Carol Swain, Condoleeza Rice, Star Parker, Allen West, and Ben Carson think differently about racial issues than do John the Author, Monica Trinidad, and Andrew Aydin. What’s most notable in the public comments from New Trier administrators, faculty, and community supporters of the seminar is that no one addresses the concerns of community members who oppose the ideological bias inherent in the seminar. In other words, not one seminar defender claims that the seminar sessions are unbiased or ideologically balanced. That should trouble anyone concerned with sound pedagogy.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2017-02-16/trump-s-immigration-raids-aren-t-the-problem
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Deportation raids make for lurid headlines that may please Trump’s political base. But less theatrical measures would have far more dramatic effect. The single most effective way to reduce the illegal immigrant population, for example, would be to implement the E-Verify employment and biometric entry/exit tracking systems. The sooner Trump realizes this — both the practical ways to enforce existing law and the realistic ways to bring about more effective policy — the better off the country will be.)

— Want to Take on the Trump Administration? These Congressmen Have Released a Guide to Help You – Ian Smith  (DIERSEN: Because I blew the whistle on political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation in the federal government and I became an active member in a class action lawsuit that charged the federal government with reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation, THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WASTED MY CAREER AND FORCED ME TO RETIRE IN 1997 WHEN I WAS 49 YEARS OLD.)
http://www.fedsmith.com/2017/02/16/want-to-take-on-the-trump-administration-these-congressmen-have-released-a-guide-to-help-you/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two Congressmen are encouraging federal employees to speak out against the Trump administration. They have released a new guide to encourage whistleblowers to speak out and defy orders from the new administration which they say has “strapped a muzzle on federal agencies and attacked legitimate whistleblowers.” Congressmen Don Beyer (D-VA) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) released the guide (included below) which they said is “a resource for the safe and responsible disclosure of information.” Probably not coincidentally, it was released on the same day that President Trump vowed to punish those who leaked classified information in the situation surrounding the resignation of Michael Flynn. . .Caveat Emptor  Here is another point to ponder: if you decide to speak out against the new administration or your agency and find yourself on the losing end of a lawsuit, you have something to lose: your job as a federal employee. If it happens to involve classified information, you could find yourself in jail or on the run from the government (anyone remember Edward Snowden?). Congressmen Beyer and Lieu are not going to be the subject of a First Amendment lawsuit that could upend their lives if you decide to follow their advice but end up getting burned in the process. In fact, they may well remain in Congress until they decide to retire. While their guide was probably written with good intentions, the legal ramifications surrounding what they are suggesting has the potential to upend lives and careers. Caveat emptor.)

— Republicans deliver ethics complaint over CPS Rauner letter – Lauren FitzPatrick
http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/republicans-to-file-ethics-complaint-over-cps-rauner-letter/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Angry about an anti-Rauner letter that went home to Chicago Public School parents earlier this week, Chicago’s Republican Party announced an ethics complaint Wednesday against schools CEO Forrest Claypool. Chris Cleveland, head of the city’s Republican party, met with reporters Wednesday afternoon outside the office of the schools’ inspector general, where he dropped off his complaint. “It’s entirely improper to send political propaganda home with children,” said Cleveland, whose child attends Lincoln Elementary School in Lincoln Park. He was surrounded by sign-waving supporters — Republican activists, not CPS parents. “Earlier this week, Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool used taxpayer resources to send a blatantly political letter home with students,” read a copy of Cleveland’s complaint to the schools’ watchdog. “Using public time and resources on such a letter should always be considered a misuse of taxpayer funds, but it is made even more egregious in light of CPS’s self-declared financial crisis.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Gov. Bruce Rauner have battled over Rauner’s veto of a bill that would have sent $215 million to CPS for teacher pensions. The governor nixed the measure in December right after Illinois Senate President John Cullerton said it wasn’t tied to overall pension reform. The money is now attached to the Illinois Senate’s grand bargain package, which also now includes a statewide fix to how the state doles out money to school districts. This week, Claypool and Gov. Bruce Rauner ramped up their rhetoric, each blaming the other for CPS’ budget woes. On Monday, Claypool likened Rauner to unpopular President Donald Trump, while announcing another $69 million in mid-year cuts he’s calling spending freezes at the state’s largest school district. He gave principals letters to distribute to parents and to Local School Council members the same day he told them that half of their discretionary spending for things like school supplies would be frozen indefinitely. “Governor Rauner, just like President Trump, has decided to attack those who need the most help. Governor Rauner and President Trump regularly attack Chicago because they hope to score political points. It is shameful,” read the first line of the parents’ communique. Tuesday, Rauner fired back via an open letter penned by his education secretary Beth Purvis who told Claypool to look in the mirror. She placed the blame for the financial mess squarely on CPS’ “continued mismanagement” and calling the latest cuts “curiously timed.” She called the spending freezes “a shock to all of us,” noting that CPS’ pension payment isn’t due until June. CPS’ code of ethics does specifically prohibit political campaigning, saying that, “No Official or Employee shall use his or her official Board position to engage in Political Activity or endorse a Candidate for Elective Office” and “No Official or Employee is permitted to use Board resources to perform any Political Activity. But as long as no staffer is coerced into the activity, “Nothing in this Section prohibits Political Activities that are otherwise appropriate for an Employee to engage in as part of his or her official employment duties,” the policy reads. The news comes after Puzder admitted in a statement Tuesday to having employed an undocumented maid for years. http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170127/news/170128917/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The attorney representing petitioners who want to merge Lisle, Warrenville and Woodridge with Naperville says the initiative is all about money. Annexing the smaller communities to Naperville would allow the larger city to use economies of scale to reduce the property tax burden on residents, Frank Avila said. The Chicago attorney said he still “is not authorized” to say who is behind the merger push. “This is about making life more affordable,” Avila said. But mayors of the four communities say talk of lowering taxes is “smoke and mirrors” and those behind the proposal have a political motive, especially because of the “clandestine and haphazard” way the idea has come to the fore. “People with serious issues bring it forward in a little more responsible manner, and this certainly was not done in a responsible manner,” Warrenville Mayor David Brummel said. “I just don’t think it’s all about taxes.”)

http://www.wjbdradio.com/politics/2017/01/27/trump-pushes-voter-fraud-claim-citing-fringe-blogger
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump cited a new study Thursday to back up his claim that millions of ballots were cast illegally in the 2016 election – this one from a widely discredited blogger who has thus far declined to provide any evidence. The president’s latest source: 56-year old Gregg Phillips of Austin, Texas, a man who has been roundly criticized by mainstream academics and political opponents as a conspiracy theorist. His critics note that Phillips has claimed the Obama Department of Homeland Security hacked the election. Asked by ABC News if he had evidence to support his claim that millions of people voted illegally, Phillips demurred, saying he “is building that case right now.” “I may be a whacko, I may be a nut, I don’t know, I don’t really care what they say about me,” he said. Trump thought enough of Phillips’s theory that he cited it on Twitter. “Gregg Phillips and crew say at least 3,000,000 votes were illegal. We must do better!” he tweeted on Friday morning. To Phillips, who has argued that a recent tax lien against him is the product of political persecution by the IRS, the presidential attention came as a shock. “That was a little unexpected,” Phillips said of the Trump tweet. “What are you going to say? I mean, I’m just a regular guy and all of a sudden the President tweets my name and my whole world lit up for a little while today.” . . . On Thursday, Trump made Phillips the newest expert to bolster his voter fraud claims.)

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/obama-gave-foreign-students-180000-u.s.-jobs-32b-in-lost-wages/article/2613146
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A pro-immigrant program was expanded under President Obama that paid U.S. firms $2.7 billion to hire 180,000 foreign “students,” jobs that likely otherwise would have gone to Americans, according to a new report. The so-called “Optional Practical Training” was supposedly set up for foreign students but actually included no training and put college graduates in the high-paying jobs for three years. The Center for Immigration Studies, which on Friday urged President Trump to stop the program, estimated that the jobs paid $60,000, suggesting a total of $11 billion in annual wages lost to American workers, over $32 billion over three years. In his Inaugural Address, Trump advocated an “America First” theme. The Center said the program, also used under former President George W. Bush, paid companies $10,000-$15,000 to hire the foreigner college grads for three years.)
