http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170125/news/170129345/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “We’re asking you to put on your Sherlock Holmes hats and investigate,” said presenter and Teen Librarian Alice Son. “Constantly play the devil’s advocate.” One evaluation method — which had an acronym that amused the crowd — was the CRAAP Test. It stands for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose — things a reader should consider. “There is a bias for certain sources, so consider both sides,” Son said. The presentation included discussions on reading news on social media and asking people to place different media outlets on a “political bias spectrum.” They encouraged people to read and evaluate articles before instantly sharing them online; to read stories on both side of the spectrum or something that challenges their opinions; to regularly clear the cookies from their internet browsers to prevent the same types of stories from showing up; and to fact-check information at credible websites like Snopes.com, Politifact.com and FactCheck.org. “It’s sad that libraries, and various other institutions, have to teach people how to protect themselves,” said attendee Ralph Blasko of Arlington Heights. “We are all being manipulated every day … we have to be wary of everything.” The library will host another presentation on the topic March 23, and similar events are being planned at other libraries around the suburbs.)

In my opinion, it is a crime to encourage people to come to America illegally, to stay in America illegally, and to bring others to America illegally.  If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1960s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the jobs that did doing yard work, delivering newspapers, washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, and delivering mail. If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1970s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the jobs that did working on an automobile assemble line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, pumping gasoline, and collecting delinquent taxes. If legal and illegal immigration were as high during the 1980s as it is today, I doubt that I would have gotten the job that did auditing federal agencies.  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that all the jobs that I had were bad jobs, but nevertheless, jobs that should be given to immigrants.)

— A wall isn’t “the” answer to our immigration problem – TOM TANCREDO
http://www.denverpost.com/2017/01/14/a-wall-isnt-the-answer-to-our-immigration-problems/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The answer is called E-Verify, an internet-based system for verifying legal work status, the infrastructure for which already exists. It’s is a program operated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. In less than one minute, any employer can use it to verify the legal status of the person seeking employment. Today it is a voluntary program used by over a half-million private sector employers that do not rely on illegal labor. We can halt probably 95 percent of unlawful hiring of illegal labor if E-Verify is made mandatory for all employers except those using a legal guest worker program to obtain temporary employees. But here’s the really scary part to my former colleagues: once in place, it is largely self-enforcing and does not depend on an army of immigration agents doing on-site inspections of paper records. It works, and that’s why it is so vigorously opposed. Mandatory E-verify will reduce illegal immigration dramatically. If we remove the magnet of jobs, far fewer people try to enter illegally, and once fully implemented, most of those already here will be forced to return home and start on a legal path of entry into the United States.)

— Public speaks out on plan to merge DuPage Election Commission into clerk’s office – Gary Gibula  (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform.  Are you a partisan? I have always been one.  According to Wikipedia, “In politics, a partisan is a committed member of a political party.” I have always been a “a committed member” of the Republican Party, and especially since 1999, I have been “a committed member” of the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee (DCRCC), and the Illinois Republican Party (IRP). However, those who dominate the MTRCC, DCRCC, IRP, and the Republican Party and who reject planks in the IRP platform and/or in the Republican Party platform define “a committed member” differently.  According them, “a committed member” a) is someone who rejects the same planks that they do, usually the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, Second Amendment, gambling, and/or equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks and b) serves as one of their operatives or as one of their dupes.)

https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/an-inside-look-at-the-international-lgbt-leaders-conference-and-what-really
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Walmart, AT&T, and Comcast were among the major corporate sponsors of the International LGBT Leaders Conference held December 8-10 to promote homosexual- and transgender-affirming laws, abortion, illegal immigration, and other “progressive” Democratic agendas. The conference, put on by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Institute — also known simply as the Victory Institute — was first envisioned as a recruiting event and strategy session to help place LGBTQ activists in a sympathetic Hillary Clinton administration. But with Donald Trump’s surprise victory on November 8, the event turned into a series of panel discussions on how to resist a Trump presidency and GOP-controlled Congress. The conference was hosted by the Washington Hilton Hotel, where President Ronald Reagan and three other men were shot in an assassination attempt in 1981. LifeSiteNews attended the Victory Institute conference, which drew more than 500 homosexual, bisexual and “transgendered” lawmakers as well as allied political and corporate activists from across the globe. This is the first of several articles on the conference, which offered a glimpse into President Obama’s success in pushing his LGBTQ policies in the United States and abroad and how difficult it will be to overturn them if President-elect Trump is so inclined. Victory Institute is associated with the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, a political action committee that works to elect openly homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered individuals to public office. Among Victory Fund’s co-founders in 1991 is homosexual activist and major Democratic Party fundraiser Terry Bean, who in 2014 at age 66 was arrested by Portland, Oregon, police along with his 25-year-old ex-boyfriend, Kiah Lawson, on charges of sodomizing a 15-year-old boy. As LifeSiteNews reported, Bean, who is also a co-founder of the LGBTQ lobby group Human Rights Campaign, was charged with two felony charges of third-degree sodomy and one count of third-degree sex abuse. The sex abuse charges against Bean were dropped after the boy fled and refused to testify following “an offer by Bean to end the case with a so-called ‘civil compromise’ in which Bean would pay the young man $225,000 and avoid a criminal trial,” Willamette Week reported. A transcript of a police interview with Lawson reveals that Bean reportedly knew the boy he was “hooking up” with sexually was underage and tried to coach him to say he was 18. A corporate-funded “gay insiders” army  Far more than on the abortion issue, in the LGBTQ “culture war” the homosexual-transgender lobby has a huge advantage over its pro-family opponents in both funding and the number of fully engaged activists. As homosexual power grew especially through two Obama terms, these conferences have gained more and more funding and sponsorships from large corporations, which have embraced the LGBTQ movement’s paradigm of viewing homosexualism and transgenderism strictly from a “civil rights” perspective. The Victory Institute conference was no exception. Most speaker panels were sponsored by a major corporation whose representative gave opening remarks touting that company’s commitment to LGBTQ issues. Here are some of the themes observed at the International LGBT Leaders conference: Openly “gay” and homosexually “married” American ambassadors — all men — discuss how living “out” proudly and publicly with their same-sex “husband” changes minds in the foreign nations in which they serve. They understand their role in normalizing “gay marriage” and the immoral homosexual lifestyle abroad. LGBTQ activists in the military discuss how they pushed for open homosexuality and then open transgenderism in the Armed Forces, and how transgender activists used key meetings with the Pentagon’s top brass to advance their gender-confusion agenda (without Congress). Why homosexual and transgender activists think it will be difficult to “roll back” many pro-LGBT policies enacted by President Obama — even transgenderism in the military. Representatives of major corporations (all conference sponsors) discuss how they are crucial to stopping “religious freedom” legislation at the state level. Corporate power is now central to LGBTQ lobbying nationwide. Homosexual (illegal) “immigration” activists apply homosexual activist “coming out” and victimhood tactics to their push for amnesty — comparing coming out as “gay” or “transgender” to coming out as an “undocumented” immigrant. How LGBTQ activists work hand-in-hand with other “progressive” agendas including abortion-on-demand, amnesty/“rights” for illegal immigrants, gun control and radical feminism — almost exclusively working with Democrats. When corporate America funds the LGBTQ movement, it mostly finances the left. LGBTQ activists adore President Obama for so aggressively pushing homosexual, bisexual and transgender policies at all levels of the federal government — and across the world by leveraging American power and his bully pulpit. Obama gave LGBTQ activists almost everything they wanted. He is a big part of the success of the “gay” and “transgender” revolution in the United States. But will Trump and the Republicans coming to power in Washington have the will to reverse it in any significant way?. . .Corporate Sponsors  The following were major corporate sponsors of the International LGBT Leaders Conference 2016: AARP, AT&T, Altria (cigarette and tobacco products), Coca-Cola, Comcast, Dow, Gilead (drug manufacturer), Pfizer, PG&E, Southwest Airlines, State Farm, Toyota, Union Pacific, Walmart, and Xylem (water technology). A future article will report on how so many major corporations are pushing LGBTQ policies to the point of becoming culture-war power players in stopping social conservative legislation. That includes laws designed to protect the freedom of citizens and small businesses not to participate in homosexual “marriages” and other aspects of the gay-trans agenda, according to the dictates of their conscience. As the reader will observe from these reports, homosexual and transgender activists lean heavily left and toward the Democratic Party. No panelists were seen speaking in support of Donald Trump or the Republican Party, and no homosexual Republicans, much less traditional GOP conservatives, were represented. Two days after Trump’s electoral win, Victory Fund President & CEO Aisha C. Moodie-Mills issued a statement that read in part, “Today I am heartbroken that racist, xenophobic, sexist and transphobic demagoguery won last night’s presidential election.” Time will tell whether major corporations ostensibly serving consumers of all persuasions — from far-left progressives to tea party conservatives — will pay a price for financing and aligning so closely with leftist LGBTQ politics of this sort.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The impact of hiring freezes enacted during previous Democratic and Republican administrations demonstrates that such measures have not, in fact, significantly reduced the size of our federal workforce or enhanced federal government operations,” the 106 members wrote, citing a still-relevant 1982 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. The previous freezes did not result in a significant reduction in the size of the workforce, yet served, the letter said, “to decrease efficiency, transparency, and accountability government-wide at the expense of the public safety and American taxpayer dollars.” Instead of controlling federal full-time employment, agencies increased temporary and part-time workers. “They also resorted to an extraordinary reliance on private contractors,” the Democrats wrote.)

NATIONAL REVIEW
— It’s Still a Mad, Mad California – VICTOR DAVIS HANSON
http://www.nationalreview.com/article/443466/california-madness-hypocritical-coastal-elites-soak-middle-class
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Coastal elites set rules for others, exempt themselves, and tolerate rampant lawlessness from illegal aliens. One reason for the emergence of outsider Donald Trump is the old outrage that elites seldom experience the consequences of their own ideologically driven agendas. Hypocrisy, when coupled with sanctimoniousness, grates people like few other human transgressions: Barack Obama opposing charter schools for the inner city as he puts his own children in Washington’s toniest prep schools, or Bay Area greens suing to stop contracted irrigation water from Sierra reservoirs, even as they count on the Yosemite’s Hetch Hetchy project to deliver crystal-clear mountain water to their San Francisco taps. The American progressive elite relies on its influence, education, money, and cultural privilege to exempt itself from the bad schools, unassimilated immigrant communities, dangerous neighborhoods, crime waves, and general impoverishment that are so often the logical consequences of its own policies — consequences for others, that is. Abstract idealism on behalf of the distant is a powerful psychological narcotic that allows caring progressives to dull the guilt they feel about their own privilege and riches.)

http://www.fedsmith.com/2017/01/07/opm-touts-its-accomplishments-during-the-obama-administration/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Expanding Diversity and Inclusion  OPM has made a strong push to expand diversity among the federal workforce over the last few years. Consequently, many of the accomplishments highlighted in the report were centered around diversity and inclusion. For example, the report touted accomplishments such as hiring disabled federal employees in record numbers, hiring more veterans, expanding the rights of LGBT employees, establishing the Diversity and Inclusion Government-wide council in 2015, combating implicit bias through leadership training, and highlighting efforts to close the gender pay gap. OPM said in the report, however, that there was more work to be done to further expand diversity and inclusion among the federal workforce: Building a diverse and inclusive workforce is not a task to be delegated. It is a core principle of human capital management that is critical to the success of every project, team, or organization. This should be a priority for senior leaders across government, and agencies should take an enterprise wide approach based on research-informed best practices for hiring, retention, and development.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: OUTSTANDING: E-Verify. A chief rallying cry of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign involved limiting immigration to boost employment among native-born Americans, and a position paper outlining how he would do that includes mandating E-Verify nationwide to keep employers from hiring those in the country without legal permission. E-Verify, a system for employers to electronically check a new hire’s identity information against government databases before permitting them to work, has been required of federal contractors and vendors since 2007. Some states require public or private employers to use the system; Illinois does not. Critics of E-Verify raise concerns about privacy, implementation burdens and inaccuracies that keep legal immigrants from working.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. YOUR WEALTH RATIO  A wealth ratio is a measure of how effectively you’ve converted your lifetime income into wealth. . .2. YOUR OVERHEAD RATIO  How much of your after-tax income is eaten up by basic, must-have expenses? If you’re having trouble making ends meet, calculating your overhead ratio can help explain why. It also can be handy to know when you’re determining if you can afford new loan payments or how much to save in an emergency fund. . .3. YOUR TAX RATES  Your tax bracket doesn’t reveal the amount of taxes paid on your total income. Instead, the bracket (also called the marginal tax rate) reflects how much Uncle Sam claimed of the last dollar you earned. If you’re a single filer in the 25 percent federal tax bracket, the first $9,275 of your 2016 taxable income is taxed at the 10 percent rate, the next $28,375 at 15 percent and the amount above $37,650 at 25 percent.)

On my father’s side, in 1844, my great great grandfather immigrated to Chicago and worked in a brick factory. In 1854, he homesteaded a farm in southeast Crete Township.  In 1864, he bought 10 acres in northeast Crete and he and my great grandfather began operating Crete’s only hardware store at the northeast intersection of Main and Exchange; tragically, in 1966, the building was torn down and the land sold.  In 1902, my great grandfather had the 1285 Main Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres; it is one of Crete’s landmark homes; tragically, it was sold during the 1940s.  In 1926, my grandfather had 1286 Wood Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres. Between 1948 and 1954, my father, my mother, and I lived in an apartment above the aforesaid hardware store.  In 1954, my father, my mother, my brother, and I moved into the 1286 Wood Street home.  My father lived there until he died suddenly in 1969.  My mother lived there until she died last year.  I lived there until 1972.  My bother continues to live there.)

That cash haul seems a bit lower than in the past, but the good folks at LSSI also told me today that online contributions are still coming in, so click here if you weren’t able to attend, or if you forgot to bring a toy with you yesterday. http://thehill.com/homenews/media/311116-liberal-media-enjoys-post-trump-election-boom
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump’s November victory has been a boom for liberal news outlets, which are getting big business from voters shocked by the billionaire’s surprise win over Hillary Clinton. Instead of wallowing in despair, left-leaning voters are buying subscriptions to The New York Times and Vanity Fair while tuning in to television programs with a liberal slant. “We’ve seen weeks of 10 times the subscription adds that we saw in the same period last year,” Times CEO Mark Thompson said at the Dec. 5 UBS Global Media and Communications Conference. Attacks by Trump on the Times have been frequent, but don’t appear to have hurt the publication. The Times has exceeded 200,000 new digital-only subscriptions during the fourth quarter alone, Thompson said. “We’re seeing … a surge and I would say more broadly that we expect the lively news cycle to continue in America well into 2017,” he added. he Washington Post, which like the Times has been attacked by Trump, reported 99.1 million unique visitors in November 2016, according to comScore, a global media measurement and analytics company. The number of unique visitors to WashingtonPost.com marks a 38 percent increase over last year. Liberal commentators have called on people to subscribe to such publications, in part as a response to “fake news” stories that some blamed for the election result.)

OBSERVER
— The Top 5 Reasons Headhunters Aren’t Reaching Out to You – Keith Liscio
http://observer.com/2016/12/the-top-5-reasons-headhunters-arent-reaching-out-to-you/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You have the wrong experience  This is probably the hardest obstacle to overcome both from a qualitative and quantitative standpoint. Recruiters are generally highly specialized in what we do and, remember, we’re putting round pegs in round holes. If you are a square peg, it is unlikely that a round peg recruiter can help you. If you are a round peg of the wrong diameter, there are some searches you’ll be excluded from. For instance, recruiters are very rarely hired to bring in entry level employees. Because the pool of talent is generally large for these positions and recruiters are not inexpensive, most businesses choose to fill these slots through campus recruiting, advertisements and the resumes they receive unsolicited. It also means that for certain oversubscribed college fields of study like psychology, sociology, or history, graduates may never be in a position to be helped by the services of a recruiter in obtaining a job in their chosen major. Generally speaking, recruiters start being helpful to younger workers once they have two to three years of experience in a given field—but only to move to another company within that same field. So, for instance, if a candidate excels in engineering (or accounting, or marketing) at their current company, recruiters will be interested in taking them to engineering (or accounting, or marketing) roles at other companies. Recruiters are paid to find people who have specific experience. For example, marketing means marketing to a recruiter. While sales people sometimes move into marketing roles on their own, it is rare that a company will pay a recruiter to find them a sales person that they’ll hire for a marketing position. By the same token, companies use recruiters to hire client-side employees for client-side roles and agency-side people for agency roles. Employees switch on their own from agencies to clients and vice-versa all the time. It is also common for employees to move from a specific function in one industry to the same function in another industry. When using a recruiter to find an employee for a specific role, however, firms may require that the industry experience more closely match their own. You have a non-linear career path  It is very common in today’s workplace for employees—even good ones—to change jobs more frequently and switch functions and industries with greater regularity. However, companies generally won’t pay a recruiter to find somebody like that. Say I’m hired to fill the job of Chief Cook and Bottle Washer for a client. Ideally, they’d like to see somebody who had a part-time job washing bottles in high school, graduated from culinary school with a degree in cooking, and moved on to progressively more responsible positions such as Cook and Bottle Washer Assistant, Associate Cook and Bottle Washer, Cook and Bottle Washing Manager, Director of Cooking and Bottle Washing, before culminating as Vice President of Cooking and Bottle Washing. In fact, some may require that I only target those that have not only done all that but are already serving as Chief Cook and Bottle Washer at another firm. It is sometimes difficult to meet all of a client’s expectations on any given position. Depending on the nature of the job and the client, however, we do usually come remarkably close. The higher up the chain you are in your career, the more closely my clients will want you to have very specific experiences. If you’ve come to your job as Director of Cooking and Bottle Washing by a more circuitous route, the client who’s hired me to fill that job as Chief may not want to meet you.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to new research from Pew Research, there are eight million illegal immigrants working or looking for work in the U.S., totaling five percent of the U.S. work force and the vast majority of the over 11 million illegal immigrants commonly estimated to be in the nation. While many of those immigrants pay taxes, there is a net cost to taxpayers of tens of billions of dollars per year, according to fluctuating estimates. Many of these costs are borne by state and local governments. Building an expensive wall won’t force any illegal immigrants, about 40 percent of whom have overstayed their visas after legally crossing our borders, to leave the country. Enacting an effective E-Verify program enforced by fining businesses who hire illegal immigrants would, by removing the financial incentive of employment. Likewise, Congress and Trump can simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars and remove at least some of the financial and legal protections provided to illegal immigrants by pulling funding from more than 200 sanctuary cities that refuse to work with federal customs officials.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Once thought a sure way to block illegals, the federal web-based E-Verify system was supposed to allow “businesses to determine the eligibility of their employees to work in the United States.” It doesn’t really. “We’ve got to talk about E-Verify,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “People come here for jobs. Reducing the power of that magnet reduces the cost of securing the border.” E-Verify now is riddled with holes. Even the official Department of Homeland Security website bears this proviso: “E-Verify does not provide your employer with any immigration, citizenship status or document information about you.” “A more effective system is more expensive,” Mr. Hutchinson said. “You have to check more databases to authenticate the identity of the person who presents a card. A truly comprehensive E-Verify burdens small businesses financially, but if you exempt businesses that employ fewer than 50 people, you leave the door open to fraud.”)

— The Post-Familial Election  How the thinning out of families created fertile ground for Trump. – Ross Douthat  (DIERSEN: How is your family tree doing?  How many children did you and your spouse have, did your parents have, and did your grandparents have?  My wife and I gave up trying to have children, my parents had two children, my grandparents on my father’s side had two children and my grandparents on my mother’s side had four children.  My brother and my father’s sister never married and had no children.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/06/opinion/sunday/the-post-familial-election.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So instead of widening, my family tree tapered, its branches thinned. And it may thin again, since so far the seven cousins in my generation have only three children. All of them are mine. This is a very normal Western family history. Everywhere across the developed world, families have grown more attenuated: fewer and later marriages, fewer and later-born children, fewer brothers and sisters and cousins, more people living for longer and longer stretches on their own. It’s a new model of social life, a “post-familial” revolution that’s unique to late modernity. For a while, conservatives have worried that this revolution is a boon to liberalism, to centralization and bureaucratic control — because as families thin people are more likely to look to politics for community and government for protection. This idea is borne out in voting patterns, where marriage and kids tend to predict Republican affiliation, and the single and divorced are often reliable Democratic partisans. The Obama White House’s “Life of Julia” ad campaign in 2012 — featuring a woman whose every choice was subsidized by the government from cradle to grave, with a lone child but no larger family or community in sight — seemed to many conservatives like a perfect confirmation of our fears: Here was liberalism explicitly pitching the state as a substitute for kith and kin. But while we worried about the liberal vision, our own ideological side was adapting to the family’s attenuation in darker ways — speaking not to singletons or single mothers, but to powerful post-familial anxieties among the middle-aged and old.)

— The real national embarrassment – Robert Samuelson
http://www.reviewjournal.com/the-real-national-embarrassment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All this suggests an obvious immigration agenda.  First, we need to reduce illegal immigrants, both because illegality is bad in its own right and because the constant inflow frustrates assimilation. To further discourage illegal immigration, we should make E-Verify — a system for employers to check the immigration status of job applicants — mandatory for most businesses. We also need to legalize the vast majority of undocumented workers who have been here for years and don’t have a criminal record. Finally, we need to reform legal immigration so that it favors the entry of high-skilled workers, who aid the economy and assimilate more easily.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Baby Boomers Blew It  We Baby Boomers did fail when planning for our financial future, but part of the problem is that our future is being prolonged. We are living longer and therefore outliving our resources. In 1900, the average lifespan was 47 years. Today, AARP reports that a 65-year old is expected to be able to blow out their birthday candles at 85 years of age. Wow, get out and enjoy your retirement. This is great news unless you happen to be an average American, between the age of 55 and 64, who has only accrued $104,000 in retirement savings, according to the June 2015 Government Accountability Office. To sum this up, a longer life span means that 47 percent of the oldest Baby Boomers are at risk of not having enough money for retirement, as reported by Employee Benefit Research Institute. Options are scary. Keep working? Live with the kids? Your choices get limited. We Baby Boomers have not set a great example for the Gen Z’ers who are just getting out of school, entering the workforce and trying to design their own financial futures.)
