BREITBART
— Conservative Jeanne Ives Gets Massive Fundraising Boost in Illinois Governor’s Race – JOEL B. POLLAK
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/01/30/conservative-jeanne-ives-gets-massive-fundraising-boost-illinois-governors-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative State Representative Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) received a massive donation on Monday from Lake Forest businessman Richard Uihlein, who formerly backed incumbent Republican Governor Bruce Rauner. Crain’s Chicago Business reports that Uihlein wrote Ives’s insurgent campaign a $500,000 check, giving it a boost even as Rauner attempts to look past the March 20 primary and towards likely Democratic nominee J.B. Pritzker. Uihlen’s defection from Rauner may also be a sign of things to come among conservative voters, who may be attracted to a strong alternative. Rauner won in 2014 on an agenda of reform, but has failed to deliver. He vetoed a tax increase by was overridden by the state’s Democrat-dominated legislature. Worse, from a conservative point of view, he broke a key pledge and signed a law expanding state funding of abortions. He also signed legislation making Illinois a “sanctuary state.” Ives is a solid conservative who graduated from West Point and served overseas in the U.S. Army. Her only political weakness is her lack of name recognition outside of her district in the western suburbs of Chicago. She trails Rauner by a wide margin in early polls. However, as Crain’s notes, having a sizable campaign war chest will help her advertise. Recently, Ives told Breitbart News: “Any time conservative voters know that there’s an opponent to Bruce Rauner, they’re motivated to come to the polls and work for me and vote for me. And that’s because my record is one of conservatism, and they are very upset at sanctuary policies, taxpayer funding of abortion, junk science on transgender issues, [and] bailing out Chicago schools with our school money.” Pritzker, like Rauner, is a billionaire with little prior formal political experience, although he has close ties to the state’s Democratic Party establishment.)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTOS OF IVES AND RAUNER: How the suburbs could decide the Rauner, Ives primary – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: According to this article, DuPage County leaders who support Rauner over Ives said “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way” and “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can/will defend/advance their platform. In Illinois, if you state that you are Republican, but you fail/refuse to defend/advance the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) platform, you are not a Republican, you are a RINO, a Democrat plant, a Libertarian plant, or a Green plant. You should not seek or hold any kind of government or political office in Illinois as a Republican. Those who can/will defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Ives. Those who state that they are Republican, but fail/refuse to defend/advance the IRP platform endorse Rauner. I served on the 2008 IRP Platform and Resolutions Committee. The IRP’s 2012 and 2016 platforms are little changed from IRP’s 2008 platform. Needless-to-say, I want to serve on IRP’s 2020 Platform and Resolutions Committee. If Rauner wins the primary election, to win the general election, he will have to stress the planks in the IRP platform that he rejects, that is, he will have to destroy the IRP. Most commonly, RINOs, Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, and Green plants reject the traditional family, right to life, and immigration planks. Most commonly, they promote dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, abolition of the First and Second Amendments, and even worse things. Most commonly, they are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-draft avoiders, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180130/how-the-suburbs-could-decide-the-rauner-ives-primary
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ candidacy continues to roil Republicans as many in the GOP establishment embrace Gov. Bruce Rauner as their best hope in the general election, while conservatives dig in for the challenger in the March 20 primary. And if recent events are any indication, much of the battle will be fought in the suburbs. At a Rauner pep rally with DuPage County GOP leaders a week ago, some Republicans admitted to angst over how Ives, a social conservative from Wheaton, is splitting the party, although Rauner didn’t even mention her name. Instead, he said the real threat will come from Democrats in the November general election. “We can’t have Mike Madigan and J.B. Pritzker in total control,” Rauner said, referring to Illinois’ powerful House speaker and the Hyatt hotel heir who is one of six Democratic contenders for governor. Meanwhile, an undeterred Ives took the podium at Chicago’s Union League Club last week with her own posse of seven elected officials who back her candidacy. “It is unprecedented to have legislators in open revolt against the governor of their own party,” Ives said. The endorsement throwdown ramped up at Rauner’s event in Naperville, where DuPage County Board Chairman Dan Cronin told party members in a private meeting “we’ve got to stick together” to re-elect the governor. “Nobody likes a primary,” Cronin said later. “We can ill afford to fight among ourselves.” Backing Rauner were 14 local mayors, countywide elected officials and four state senators and representatives. But not everyone’s on that bandwagon. While Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico hosted Rauner last week, two days later Naperville Township Assessor Warren Dixon was among those backing Ives. Likewise, state lawmakers Patti Bellock and (Peter) Breen represent neighboring districts in eastern DuPage County. She came out for Rauner and he for Ives. Said Chirico: “I suspect there are some single-issue Republicans that will (endorse Ives) as well, but mainstream Republicans are behind Rauner all the way. In my view, Gov. Rauner has the only realistic chance of winning as a Republican in the general election.” Breen, a Lombard state representative, said “our country was founded on a tradition of vigorous public debate. For these reasons, I’d respectfully contend that the greater good is best served by an open, robust contest for the Republican nomination for governor.” Ives has made some headway in Cook County with an endorsement by the Republicans of Wheeling Township organization. Rather than seeing Ives as a quixotic choice, Wheeling Township Committeeman Ruth O’Connell thinks Rauner “hasn’t accomplished anything” and Ives “has the better chance.” Ives’ opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage won’t sit well with the majority of Republicans in Cook and DuPage counties who are “strong fiscal conservatives and social moderates,” countered Aaron Del Mar, Cook County Republican Central Committee deputy chairman. Ives’ opposition to sanctuary cities also means Hispanic Republicans are with the incumbent, Northfield banker and Republican Joseph Gomez predicted. On the fiscal side, “there’s no doubt the Republican business community will be with Rauner,” Gomez said. The Cook County Central Committee votes on endorsements Feb. 5. “We’re the battleground,” Del Mar said. “I think (Ives will) do well in conservative areas and downstate. It will be uphill in Cook and DuPage.” Cook County lawmaker Tom Morrison of Palatine disagrees. “Consider the numbers of Republican congressmen and General Assembly members who are staying on the fence or actively speaking up for Rep. Ives,” he said. “By his own policy decisions, Bruce Rauner is a man without the base of support he needs to win in a general election.” Just-retired Addison Township Republican Chairman Pat Durante was shaken by Rauner’s signing a bill allowing for Medicaid to be used for abortions. But the veteran political observer said “the talk on the street is he’ll beat Jeanne and Jeanne will pick up that hard-core base.” Could Ives beat the odds? “Sure,” Durante said, “but she’ll need more money and the base needs to work for her.”)

http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/43348-when-it-comes-to-elections-there-are-more-options-than-endorsing-a-candidate

(FROM THE ARTICLE: To beat these incumbents took a variety of tactics, and the victories are in no way ours alone to claim. In both races, multiple local efforts formed sometimes intersecting and sometimes divergent forces aimed at taking down the incumbents. In Chicago, some groups focused on traditional phone and door-knocking outreach tactics on behalf of Alvarez’s challenger Kim Foxx. In Arizona, an organization received funding to send mailers targeting Republican voters to convince them that challenger Paul Penzone would do a better job at keeping them safer than his opponent. In contrast, each of us put our energies into grassroots campaigns that did not endorse anyone in the race. Instead, the #ByeAnita and #BaztaArpaio campaigns framed the races as watermark moments and motivated voters to set an example by taking down the incumbents for their racist behaviors. In these times, voters — especially voters of color — are cynical. (More eligible voters sat out the 2016 election, despite the stakes, than cast a ballot.) We would attribute this low turnout not only to extensive voter suppression efforts by the GOP, but also to decades of promises from Democrats who either fail to fulfill those promises, or campaign with the assumption that voters of color are a captive base. It’s created a broad disenchantment that any challenger has a hard time overcoming. Some candidates address this by continuing to count out or ignore segments of voters who are seen as notoriously hard to mobilize. Instead, they focus their efforts to tilt the turnout needle in their direction, aiming their messaging strictly at “high efficacy” or “reliable” voters. (Ironically, these “reliable” constituents are narrowly defined as people who have a history of turning out to vote in presidential and midterm elections. It isn’t defined as the Black women who reliably vote for Democrats at a much higher margin than any other demographic.) Others set up town halls and forums to get to know the candidates, particularly when they are lesser known than the incumbents.)

— Rauner challenger Ives goes on attack during only forum of Republican governor race – Rick Pearson and Kim Geiger
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bruce-rauner-jeanne-ives-debate-20180129-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives, who was on the attack for nearly the entire time, offered a blunt assessment of Rauner’s anti-Madigan strategy. “He’s never going to have a chance,” Ives said. “Republicans across the state don’t trust him. He’s betrayed everything that we stand for.” Rauner repeatedly sought to paint a larger picture for Illinois during a second term and to look past Ives, a three-term Republican state lawmaker from Wheaton. He vowed a “revolution” using term limits and opposition to Madigan would take “power back from the corrupt insiders and (give) it back to the people of Illinois.” Ives, who’s not well known statewide and lacks the personal wealth of Rauner, used the forum to repeatedly attack Rauner’s credibility among GOP conservatives. She said fellow Republican lawmakers can attest to a lack of trustworthiness with the governor. Ives contended Rauner’s signature on legislation that expanded taxpayer-subsidized abortions for women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance demonstrated that all the governor accomplished in his first term was a “progressive social agenda.” “He told us he would veto the bill,” she said. He lied to a cardinal,” she said, a reference to Cardinal Blase Cupich. Rauner would not say what he told Cupich about the abortion legislation, but called Ives’ allegations “outrageous.” “There are a lot of politics swirling around the bill,” said Rauner, who repeatedly added that “the simple fact is I support a woman’s right to decide.” The governor said his choice to sign the bill was either to “follow what I believe or do politics.” But Ives said the March 20 primary contest was a referendum on “character and courage” and that by signing the bill, Rauner was following the “agenda” of his wife, Democrat Diana Rauner. “This is more false vicious attacks,” Rauner replied. “Madigan loves everything that you’re saying, everything that you’re doing.” Ives interjected frequently while Rauner answered questions, seeking to make the most of their only scheduled forum. Rauner repeatedly asked Ives to allow him to finish and at one point used one of his favorite condemnations, “such baloney,” to describe one of her attacks. Ives contended Rauner was “responsible” for the state income tax increase that was enacted over his veto and that he now was making “unrealistic promises” by calling for it to be phased out. Rauner said he “sure as heck did” work to block Republicans from ultimately supporting the veto override and said he was “devastated” when it and a state budget were enacted. The governor maintained that he expected federal court victories that would grant him the power to weaken the influence of unions, which are traditionally aligned with Democrats. “I’m not going to wait for Speaker Madigan to do it with me. I’m going to do it unilaterally,” Rauner said of his union-weakening efforts. “You watch us boom when we get the rest of the changes made in the court system, even if Madigan is still in power.” Rauner said if the courts rule against him, “We keep working, we keep changing, we keep fighting.” Ives, who has backed Rauner’s agenda taking on unions in the past, said her answer to dealing with public employee unions has been to fire workers who don’t accept conditions. “If you can’t impose your final best offer because the courts have blocked it, you start laying off people,” Ives said.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/28/business/metoo-finance-lawsuits-harassment.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Accusations of sexual harassment have felled dozens of executives, but in one quiet corner of the financial world, the #MeToo movement looks like a golden opportunity. Companies that offer money to plaintiffs in anticipation of future legal settlements are racing to capitalize on sexual harassment lawsuits. That is setting off alarms in some quarters because the industry, like payday lenders, has a history of providing cash at exorbitant interest rates to customers who need the money for living and sometimes medical expenses. The largely unregulated companies have operated with less public scrutiny than the rest of the litigation finance industry, which provides money to law firms to fund commercial lawsuits.)

(FROM THE LETTER: U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois recent labeled President Donald Trump a draft dodger and implied that not serving in the military renders one incapable of insight on budgetary matters related to the Defense Department. Yes, Trump was deferred from military service when we had a draft, as were erstwhile President Bill Clinton and Vice President Dick Cheney. Our immediate past president, also from the Land of Lincoln, chose not to serve. Does Duckworth believe then that we should amend the Constitution so that only presidents who have worn the uniform can bear the commander-in-chief title? Animus directed at the orange-maned man in the Oval Office has reached manic proportions when senators can make ad hominem statements in lieu of addressing the issue of the moment. Duckworth may curry favor with other sufferers of Trump Distemper with her intemperate and illogical insults, but she leaves this disabled military veteran who did not vote for Trump displeased.)

http://nprillinois.org/post/state-federal-workforce-low#stream/0
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The past year has been a tough one for the federal workforce. There was a hiring freeze at many agencies. For three days earlier this month, there was a government shutdown, leaving many workers to wonder when their next paycheck would arrive. Now, as President Trump prepares his first State of the Union address, one issue he is expected to take up, if not there then in his soon-to-follow proposed budget for fiscal year 2019, is reorganizing the federal bureaucracy. It’s a prospect that many in the federal workforce are dreading. Already, the state of the federal workforce is described as low. Morale “is the lowest that I have ever seen it in my just shy of 40 years” being a federal employee and working with federal employees, said J.David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents some 700,000 federal workers. Agencies, he says, are already short-staffed, with vacancies unfilled, and Cox worries pay will be frozen. “We are concerned,” Cox says, “because reorganization means let’s figure out a way to cut or do more with less and do away with services that the American people want.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: What is it that makes liberal journalists happy? Sexually harassing their coworkers? Creating fake news stories about Donald Trump? Pushing the liberal agenda day after day? Well, it turns out that what makes male journalists the happiest is a pay cut, at least at the BBC. The BBC said on Friday that it was reducing the salaries of several of its most prominent male journalists following Carrie Gracie’s decision this month to leave her position as the British broadcaster’s China editor to protest unequal pay between men and women at the organization. Among those receiving pay cuts are the presenters Jeremy Vine, Huw Edwards and John Humphrys. Mr. Vine described his decision to take a wage cut as a “no-brainer.”)

https://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/finance/2018/january/how-much-do-you-need-to-retire-learn-how-to-calculate-your-retirement-income-needs
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The next step is to determine what net annual income will be necessary upon retirement. The easiest method I have seen is simply to review a current pay stub and use the “net income” on the pay stub as a good starting point to know how much money is needed in retirement to maintain your lifestyle. I recommend this because some expenses may go up in retirement and some may go down. Many clients might not want to change their lifestyle in retirement, i.e., they want to live off the same income pre- and post-retirement. It’s all part of the discovery process, but I err on the side of overestimating these needs initially.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-bob-daiber-retaliation-lawsuit-settlement-20180126-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But records show that Madison County taxpayers paid nearly $500,000 to settle a 2010 lawsuit after a federal jury found Daiber retaliated against a woman by laying her off after she complained she wasn’t being paid as much as a male colleague. Daiber described the case as an “unfortunate situation,” but denied retaliating against the employee. Daiber said he tried to work with her to find a resolution, and added that he has built a reputation as a fair employer who has worked to help women achieve leadership roles in education and government. “People that know my character, (they) know that’s not my character,” said Daiber, the Madison County Regional Office of Education superintendent, in an interview Thursday. “I treat women as 100 percent equals.” As the only Democratic governor candidate from outside the Chicago area, Daiber frequently touts his government experience as something nearly all of his rivals lack. Daiber has raised just $104,000, a tiny fraction compared to what’s been spent by Gold Coast billionaire J.B. Pritzker, Kenilworth millionaire Chris Kennedy and Evanston state Sen. Daniel Biss. Daiber worked as a school teacher for more than a quarter century, and served on a village board, county board and as a township supervisor.)

WAND
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: According to this article, “Congressman Rodney Davis, (R) Illinois, says he believes elected officials and others working for the federal government are going to be held to a much higher standard of transparency in the future.” I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years. Unlike  other employers, the federal government treats its Democrat employees who are female and/or minority not only like they are members of protected groups, the federal government uses Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to give them preference over its employees who are Republican, male, White, older, and/or non-veteran. The federal government’s top priorities are a) to hire, retain, and promote Democrats, and especially Democrats who are female, minority, and/or young and b) to make way for them by getting rid of its employees who Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.

— It’s Tax Time: What to Remember – Ann Carrns (DIERSEN: Do you prepare and file your own income tax returns? I have since 1964. I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO on audits of IRS 1986-1988. I itemized 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized since 1978. I won a split decision in Tax Court when my Democrat IRS superiors and Money Magazine disallowed my education deductions in 1978. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979. I earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980. I have used Quicken and Turbotax since they became available. These employees, many of whom volunteer as diversity advocates, say they’ve been targeted by some of their own coworkers for fighting to bring greater diversity to Google’s 78,000-plus staff of mostly white and Asian men. https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2018/01/from-janitor-to-tsp-millionaire/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thanks to the booming stock market, the miracle of compounding and a steady-as-she-goes investing plan, the number of federal workers and retirees with $1 million-plus Thrift Savings Plan accounts is rapidly expanding. Except for a relatively small number of political appointees (many successful lawyers named federal judges) most of the millionaires are rank-and-file civil servants who did it the old-fashioned way. They invested from day one, took advantage of the government’s generous 5 percent match and stuck with the C and S stock funds through good times and bad. They didn’t flinch during the Great Recession and kept on buying the C and S funds when they were on sale. One of the newest members of the Millionaires Club started out as a janitor at the Veterans Administration, spent 10 years in the Marine Corps and for the last 35-plus years has been a senior counsel at a federal agency. — It was to be a “rollout of major endorsements,” according to an advisory sent out by the campaign of Jeanne Ives, the three-term Wheaton lawmaker challenging Gov. Rauner in the Republican primary. But when a reporter arrived at the Union League Club of Chicago for the scheduled 1:30 p.m. event, a person at the front desk said the Ives news conference had already occurred — at 11:30 a.m. The Ives campaign apologized for the mistake and released video of the endorsers as well as the candidate. For the record, Ives picked up the backing of Republican state Reps. Peter Breen of Lombard, Allen Skillicorn of East Dundee, Tom Morrison of Palatine and Margo McDermed of Mokena. This micro-elite controls over $7.6 trillion, an increase of 18 percent from 2016. A billionaire’s spending power is difficult to grasp, both because most people do not correctly intuit large numbers, and because a billion dollars far outstrips most people’s experience. — Flatlanders of Illinois shouldn’t rush to get a Rocky Mountain high – Editorial (DIERSEN: If you promote pot, you promote destruction.)
http://www.bnd.com/opinion/editorials/article196449134.html
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: “We also support legalizing small amounts of marijuana, which could bring in a few billions of dollars,” Democratic candidate Tio Hardiman told the Sun-Times. He’s blowing smoke. Billions in taxes only come with bales of pot. Republicans see a problem. Incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner said Illinois should wait and see the impacts in Colorado and California, allowing them to experiment on their people, especially their youth, before we subject ours to recreational marijuana use. His March 20 primary opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives, said impacts are already evident — literally. She cited the 48 percent boost in Colorado’s marijuana-related traffic deaths and boost in youth use of the drug. Not to mention, until the U.S. Congress changes federal law on marijuana, no state should be in the business of making it legal. It is one thing to decide the priority we place and resources we use on crimes related to marijuana. It is another to be so irresponsible, undisciplined and unimaginative about your state’s fiscal salvation that the only path you can see is taxation and proliferation of weed, especially without knowing how many lives you will lose or ruin.)

Roskam is stockpiling as he is the target of a fierce anti-Trump movement that’s packed events in the Democratic primary with 800 people. — BANNON TO SPEAK AT U OF C — “Steve Bannon Accepts Invitation to Speak at the University of Chicago,” by the Chicago Maroon’s Pete Grieve and Euirim Choi: “Steve Bannon has accepted an invitation from Booth professor Luigi Zingales to come speak at the University of Chicago, Zingales told The Maroon. The former White House chief strategist has not spoken at a public event since his departure from Breitbart. Zingales told The Maroon that Bannon could provide some insight into the current political and economic climate in the United States. “Whether you like his views or not, he seems to have understood something about America that I’m curious to learn more about,” he said. … The Provost affirmed the University’s policy that members of the University of Chicago can invite anyone they please to come speak.” The Story UofC Faculty have signed onto an open letter opposing the Bannon invite. – Natasha Korecki

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress’s use of repeated continuing resolutions rather than a full budget authorization to fund the government damages the Congressional Budget Office’s ability to effectively produce reports, director Keith Hall told members of the Senate Budget Committee on Wednesday. “It does make things harder. We’ve actually put off some things that we weren’t intending to put off, some computer work and some things like that,” said Hall. “If we continue under a CR, right now we’ll have to curtail our hiring, we’ll have to move down a few slots, we’ll have to cancel some training and travel. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Is a fair immigration compromise possible out of failed Schumer shutdown? – John Kass
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/columnists/kass/ct-met-shutdown-immigration-kass-0124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Dreamers are in limbo through no fault of their own, trapped between two cultures, with no place of their own to legally call home. Yet opinion polls show that much of the America public is sympathetic to their plight. So let the Dreamers stay. Those who are in criminal gangs or have violent criminal records have no right to be here. But the others, sure, why not? It would be quite easy to protect the Dreamers and their parents, except for the politics. Democrats want them as votes. Republicans are worried this could tip elections. So why not take the politics out of it? Here’s a possibility to consider: Let Dreamers stay — given permanent work and resident status — but not citizenship and voting rights. Conferring something as precious as citizenship upon people as a reward for their parents’ breaking the law isn’t the right way to go about this. If they want to become American citizens and vote, they’d be free to leave and attempt to re-enter the country as legal immigrants. If protecting Dreamers is the issue, then you’ll agree with me. But if weaponizing the Dreamers for the next election is your plan, then you won’t. And what about their parents, who crossed the border illegally and who worry about being deported? We can protect them, too, with some reasonable amnesty. Why not give them permanent work status, like green cards? But no welfare. Yes, you read that correctly.)

— Illinois Lawmakers Explore Tax Workaround – Cole Lauterbach (DIERSEN: Why not just cap real estate taxes at $10,000 per home?)
http://www.altondailynews.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=17&id=258980#.WmhmRIzR-M8
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rather than working to lower one of the nation’s highest property tax burdens, some Illinois lawmakers want to sidestep the federal tax reform bill by allowing for donations to government. One bill would create the Illinois Excellence Fund. It would allow taxpayers to donate and receive a tax credit for the exact amount. This shuffling of money back and forth would allow a taxpayer to deduct that amount on their federal taxes, effectively thwarting the $10,000 cap on state and local tax deductions put in place by the tax reform bill passed last month. The state treasurer can then use that money as he sees fit. “[The SALT deduction cap] sort of came out of nowhere,” said state Rep. Jonathan Carroll, D-Northbrook. “This is trying to offer a solution to give tax relief to the middle class.” The bill has a populist tone, appealing to the cries of high property taxes across the state. Nearly all of the current sponsors of the bill are likely to face a challenging re-election effort this November. Carroll said he expects the Internal Revenue Service would object to such a law. “They’re not likely to take it lying down,” he said. The IRS classifies a charitable donation as “voluntary and is made without getting, or expecting to get, anything of equal value.” Being a federal tax deduction as well, the state-bound donation would actually turn into a money maker. In addition to a 100 percent credit from the state, the donor would get up to 37 percent of that donation back in a federal write off. The bill would also allow a county to set up a similar charity, which could cause different issues. Local taxes are devised in reverse compared to state and federal taxes. A taxing district sets percentages based on a target revenue number and then properties are taxed at that percentage of the assessed value of their homes. State Rep. Steven Reick, R-Woodstock, said in an online post that the sponsors would tell counties that “they can set up a fund to accept donations to be used for undefined charitable purposes in exchange for a reduction or elimination of your property tax bill, which will either raise taxes on everybody else or destroy the budgets of every school district and taxing body in the County.”)

BREITBART
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Will Trump fall for those who argue that if Republicans give illegals citizenship, those illegals will eventually vote for Republicans? Ever-increasingly, illegals and their supporters talk and act like they are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.
http://www.breitbart.com/radio/2018/01/24/rep-roger-marshall-on-daca-recipients-these-kids-are-the-american-dream/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pollak questioned Marshall’s prediction of future voting trends among Hispanics. Americans originally from Mexico and Central America do not typically transition toward support for conservatism or the Republican Party, he said. . .Pollak challenged narratives framing DACA recipients as wholly Americanized, noting DACA-amnesty movement’s expression of hostility toward America and alignment with Mexican nationalism. “I’m again asking, for people who want to do something for DACA beneficiaries, for people who say that they’re Americans, why can’t they find a public face to this movement who at least appeals to Republicans or conservatives?” asked Pollak. “I’ve got to tell you, I was open to the idea of this DACA thing until I started covering some of these demonstrations, and you see the Mexican flag, and you see the hostility toward Republicans, the hostility toward America; and you ask yourself, ‘We’re being told these are just like other Americans, but they’re so radical, or at least they’re being led by radicals, why would we want them as fellow citizens?’ They don’t seem to be want to be part of a broader American community. They want to change that community. I mean, I think it’s a serious problem for anybody who wants to legalize 700,000 or 800,000 DACA recipients. . .Asked to address the concerns of parents whose children has been killed or murdered by illegal aliens, Marshall broadly called for more effective deportation measures to remove illegal aliens who “commit crimes.”)

Lamar Smith: ‘E-Verify Would Stop the Jobs Magnet’ for Illegal Immigration and ‘Put Americans First’ – ROBERT KRAYCHIK (DIERSEN: QUESTION: What kind of employers prefer citizens of foreign countries over citizens of America? ANSWER: Employers that want cheap labor and are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)

PUBLIUS FORUM
— You Can’t Be Both a Liberal AND an American at the Same Time – Warner Todd Huston
http://www.publiusforum.com/2018/01/23/cant-liberal-american-time/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals live in America, but they don’t love America. So, it’s not a surprise that they have an affinity for law breaking illegal aliens. After all, liberals don’t care about our laws or our sovereignty any more than transient illegals who come to the U.S. only to use it for its freebies and welfare, or to get a job to make a quick dollar to send back to their home country. These transient illegals don’t have any more interest in being an American than liberals do. So, when liberals fight for illegals, understand that they are doing so not out of love, but hate. Indeed, the modern Democrat Party is the biggest hate group in American history. Today’s liberals are all about hate. They hate democracy, they hate the Constitution, they hate white people, they hate capitalism, they hate democracy, they hate republican government, they hate religion, they hate the family structure, they hate guns, they hate history, they hate freedom of speech and liberty… in short they hate everything about the U.S.A. and you can’t love a place that you hate so thoroughly. In fact, the only thing they love about America is their assumption that they can “do whatever they want,” a concept they treat with licentiousness and wanton instead of the virtue and probity the founders hoped Americans would observe. It might seem a natural progression, this party now having drifted to its logical extremes. Born of a hate for the equality of negroes, the Democrat Party morphed into a party that hates America itself as the nation struggled with the post Civil War reconstruction era.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/01/24/new-cost-controls-sought-in-federal-employee-health-care-program/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Almost all federal employees and retirees are eligible for coverage under the FEHBP, the largest employer-sponsored health-insurance program in the country. The program has about 4 million enrollees, approximately the same number of covered spouses and children up to age 26, and about 260 participating plans — a dozen available nationally and the rest only regionally. The government pays about 70 percent of a plan’s total premium cost on average. The enrollee share of premiums has increased about 6 to 7 percent annually in recent years, about in line with other large employer-sponsored health plans.)

— Is a Medicaid work requirement fair? – Editorial
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/editorials/ct-edit-medicaid-rauner-work-trump-20180116-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this month, Kentucky made Medicaid history: It will now require some of its Medicaid recipients to work or risk losing benefits. Critics say this 20-hours-per-week rule is a draconian plan to toss people off the rolls. Let’s talk about that. Kentucky’s plan is flexible: Recipients could meet the requirement through volunteer work, job training, searching for a job, taking classes, or caring for someone elderly or disabled. Pregnant women, full-time students, the medically frail, the homeless and people who aren’t healthy enough to work will be exempt. . .Illinois, like almost every state, struggles to control rising Medicaid costs. You’ll remember that Obamacare not only offered a way for the uninsured to buy coverage, but also hugely expanded Medicaid beyond its traditional role of helping the neediest Americans afford health care. Illinois added hundreds of thousands of people to the rolls, many of them able-bodied adults — and Washington, not Illinois taxpayers — paid almost all of the new costs. As a result, 1 in 4 Illinoisans now is a Medicaid beneficiary.)

— Rauner’s new take on federal tax overhaul – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-chicago-riverwalk-noise-proposal-20180122-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this year, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner appeared on a Joliet radio station and said the GOP-led tax overhaul in Washington was “punishing” to the middle class for capping the deduction of state and local taxes at $10,000. But late last week, the governor unveiled a new “point of view” blog on the state website. He lauded the new federal tax law and said it means “tax relief is coming for the vast majority of Illinois families and businesses starting in 2018.” It’s the latest of shifting positions Rauner has had on Republican efforts in Washington. The governor previously declined to discuss his thoughts on changes to the tax code, saying he had “no obligation to comment on every possible policy change in Washington.” In his new blog post, Rauner said: “Members of Illinois’ middle class will keep more of their hard-earned dollars as a result of the federal tax changes.” Rauner said seven out of 10 federal tax returns in Illinois do not itemize deductions and will be able to take advantage of a doubled standard deduction and lower tax rates. He said “most families who itemize their returns will also see lower taxes,” even with the cap on state and local tax deductions and a $750,000 limit on mortgage interest for new home sales. If anything, Rauner said he sees the new federal tax law as sending “a clear message to the Illinois General Assembly: Get busy reducing state and local taxes.” Rauner has long been rebuffed in calling for freezing and making it easier for citizens to reduce local property taxes. And he’s also called for a rollback of the state income tax hike enacted last year.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hobbes cited the spiraling costs of health care, housing and education that affect his generation. He drew attention to stagnating wages, the rise of lower-quality contracting work that has replaced jobs with real benefits, the expensive real estate and cost of living required to live in the highest growth cities like San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and the right-leaning attitude toward more personal responsibility that has shifted significantly over the past two decades. In addition, Motley Fool points out that millennials are delaying life events such as marriage and home ownership because of money uncertainty. When adjusting for inflation, the average worker in the 24-36 age group earns $10,000 less than their parents’ generation did at the same age, which is roughly 20 percent less purchasing power. Many younger workers (66 percent) are contributing to an employer-sponsored retirement plan, but at lower rates than older generations, and that’s largely because of limited earnings and student debt, Motley Fool reports. The average student debt for a millennial is double that of the previous generation, Motley Fool notes. And, according to a T. Rowe Price study, nearly half of millennials expect to work at least part-time in retirement.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook is rolling out a major change to its News Feed: pushing up news articles that come from “high quality” sources, and pushing down the others. The move signals that, in an effort to combat the problem of fake news, the social media giant is willing to play a kind of editorial role — making decisions based on substance, not just how viral a headline may be. . .The company asserts that its own executives will not pick and choose favorites. Rather, they’ll let the users decide what counts as a trusted source.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD: HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: Tax Confusion As New York Rethinks Code – Vivian Wang and Jesse McKinley (DIERSEN: One could ask what is Illinois doing to “sidestep the effects of President Trump’s new federal tax plan and its sharp reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes?” In Washington, your Congressman represents you. Roskam represents me. In Springfield, who represents those in your county, in your township/ward, and in your municipality who pay more than $10,000 a year in real estate and state income taxes? For me, it is Bruce Rauner, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Mike Connelly, and Jeanne Ives. In addition to the aforesaid, Morthland, Harold, Grasso, Minor, Grant, and Byrne want to represent me in Springfield.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/18/nyregion/cuomo-trump-payroll-tax-income.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If taxpayers and lawmakers were expecting that a new 37-page report would provide a definitive road map of how New York State might sidestep the effects of President Trump’s new federal tax plan and its sharp reduction in the deductibility of state and local taxes, they instead got a view of just how complicated this is. The report, released this week, laid out at least a half-dozen ways New York could rewrite its tax code, with no indication of which option legislators might pursue. There was a potpourri of progressive rates, wage credits and tax-withholding schemes, with officials cautioning that all the options would require further study. No bills have been drafted. The possibilities included completely replacing the state income tax with an employer-side payroll tax; introducing a new progressive payroll tax in addition to the existing income tax, with tax credits to make up the difference; or designing a payroll tax only for wage earners above a certain income threshold — the taxpayers most likely to be hurt by the federal tax plan in the first place. Some versions would be mandatory. Others would be opt-in.)

An Unwelcome Tax Surprise Could Soon Lurk in Your Paycheck
— Workers’ withholding may no longer reflect what is owed for the current year or anticipated refunds – Laura Saunders (DIERSEN: From what I see, outrageously, the less federal income tax that you have paid in the past because you have itemized your deductions, the more federal income tax that you will pay in the future. I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since we got married in 1978.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-unwelcome-tax-surprise-could-soon-lurk-in-your-paycheck-1516363200
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to Treasury officials, the new withholding tables have been adjusted to reflect the larger standard deduction, lower tax rates, and the repeal of the personal exemption. But the tables couldn’t take into account changes that affect individuals differently. So they don’t include the shrinking alternative-minimum tax, the expanded child credit, or the repeal of deductions for state and local taxes. . .Or, say that Mike owes high federal and state taxes that he will no longer be able to deduct, other than $10,000. But his W-4 form on file with his employer reflects his ability to take these deductions in prior years. As a result, Mike might be under-withheld for tax year 2018. . .Many agree that taxpayers at high risk of being under-withheld are those with large itemized deductions that have been repealed or limited. These include write-offs for state and local taxes and miscellaneous expenses, such as those not reimbursed by an employer.)

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/01/19/blue-state-blues-whats-behind-coming-democratic-surge/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With Democrats surging, talk of insurgency in Republican primaries has faded — especially after Roy Moore’s defeat in Alabama. People feel less inclined to stoke internal fights when the general election is in doubt. There are exceptions, where the incumbent Republican is likely to win — or to lose. An example of the latter is in Illinois, where Governor Bruce Rauner buckled on taxes and abortion. He faces a primary challenge from a solid — but long-shot — candidate, State Senator Jeanne Ives. Regardless, Republicans are in trouble. The party’s message for 2018 will be less about the achievements of the past two years, and more about preventing Trump’s impeachment and keeping the Speaker’s gavel out of Nancy Pelosi’s hands.)
