— Walter Jacobson talks about the crucial vote of making Mike Madigan Chairman for the 6th time in a row. Walter explains that Madigan knows the voters and can relate to the voters and why this might be the end to Bruce Rauner’s run as the Governor of Illinois. (DIERSEN: I should write a book about Illinois Republican Party Chairmen since 1999: Richard S. Williamson 1999–2002, Lee A. Daniels 2002, Dallas Ingemunson 2002, Gary MacDougal 2002, Judy Baar Topinka 2002–2005, Andrew McKenna 2005–2009, Pat Brady 2009–2013, Jack Dorgan 2013–2014, and Tim Schneider 2014–present. The book would also cover a) their elections, b) those who backed their elections, c) major events during their terms in office, d) those who unsuccessfully sought the positions, and e) those who backed the unsuccessful candidates. I could title the book “History of the Illinois Republican Party 1999-2018.)

— Looking for a bigger salary? These are the companies with the highest median pay – Jena McGregor (DIERSEN: What did you do to qualify yourself for better paying jobs? I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180429/looking-for-a-bigger-salary-these-are-the-companies-with-the-highest-median-pay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The industries that dominate the top of such a list include biotech and health care firms, technology, finance and real estate, and energy and utilities. Facebook had the highest-paid median employee of technology firms that had filed as of Monday, at $240,430, according to Proxy Insight. The median employee at Valero Energy made $192,837 in 2017. At the real estate investment trust Host Hotels & Resorts, one of the largest owners of luxury and upscale hotels, the median salary is $179,574. The highest median pay in the financial industry, according to Proxy Insight’s data, was at a reinsurance firm rather than a big Wall Street bank. In addition to publishing the CEO pay ratio, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s rule requires companies to disclose the pay of the median employee used in the calculation — determined by statistical sampling or by listing the compensation in the middle after ranking all workers from highest to lowest paid (excluding the CEO) — but they can’t leave out part-timers, the majority of foreign workers or those who only have seasonal jobs. It’s important to note that the companies at the top of the list don’t necessarily have the highest paid employees on average — just who pays the highest at the median. As a result, the numbers don’t tell most people looking to negotiate offers or compare potential jobs much at all. For one, you’d have to be vying for a job in that category — if the job in question is identifiable at all. McDonald’s, for instance, listed the median worker who made $7,017 in 2017 as “a part-time restaurant crew employee located in Poland,” but whoever made $183,304 at Netflix in 2017 is only identified as the “median employee.”)

BLOOMINGTON PANTAGRAPH
— Bull’s-eye on AR-15: Popular rifle at center of debate over gun reform Public safety intersects with right to own firearms – EDITH BRADY-LUNNY (DIERSEN: One reason why countries are discouraged from having their citizens carry firearms when they invade America “is that an estimated 300 million guns, including as many as 5 million semi-automatic rifles (are) in the hands of Americans.” That is why (so far) countries like Mexico have not had their citizens carry firearms when they invade America.)
http://www.pantagraph.com/news/local/bull-s-eye-on-ar–popular-rifle-at-center/article_611eb1ee-0101-5e8c-8a2f-fe341d6aa23b.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But the removal of one weapon from the market is not the answer, said Stephen Stewart, owner of the Bloomington gun store and indoor shooting range. “Banning this gun isn’t going to do a darned thing,” Stewart said recently, during a demonstration for The Pantagraph that included an hour on the range with a reporter on the operation of one model of the AR-15. Often misidentified as a “machine gun,” the AR-15 is purchased for target shooting, hunting and home defense, said Stewart. The AR-15 was banned for 10 years under former President Bill Clinton’s 1993 assault weapons ban and became a big seller in 2004 when the sales moratorium was not renewed. Stewart said his store could not keep the guns on the shelves, with many buyers picking up the weapons because they feared another ban. Americans, more than residents of any other developed country in the world, are in love with guns — an affection some argue has gone too far. With an estimated 300 million guns, including as many as 5 million semi-automatic rifles in the hands of Americans, serious questions exist as to how any practical proposal to seriously reduce the number of guns can be implemented.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Were they coached on what to say? An estimated 300 migrants were counseled in workshops held in a civic group office at Tijuana’s largest migrant shelter and at an art gallery that once housed a cross-border tunnel used to run drugs into San Diego. Journalists were not allowed to sit-in on the sessions. Lawyers reportedly offered information about the U.S. asylum process while children of the migrants played in the background. Migrants were also warned that they could be separated from their children and face detention if they are allowed to stay in the U.S., according to the report. Reportedly, attorneys met one-on-one with some of the migrants, but did not coach them on what to say, Alex Mensing, an organizer of the effort with the Pueblos Sin Fronteras group, told the Associated Press. “We always emphasize you have to tell the truth,” Mensing said. Central American migrants often cite gang violence as the reason they are seeking asylum.)

JOYCE MEYER
— December 21, 2009 FLASHBACK: What Does Your Future Hold? (DIERSEN: From what I see, unless things change dramatically, every year more and more and more people, organizations, and companies will move into DuPage County, into Milton Township, into Wheaton, and into my precinct that are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time. Of course, the aforesaid will bring down DuPage County, Milton Township, Wheaton, and my precinct. Poverty and crime will increase. To slow down if not stop this disaster in the making, the voters in DuPage County, Milton Township, Wheaton, and my precinct should vote for Republican candidates who defend and advance the Illinois Republican platform rather than “listening to” and “representing” those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/commentary_by_fran_coombs/new_rinos_could_spell_trouble_for_the_gop

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are a lot more GOP voters Republicans In Name Only (RINOs) these days? RINOs has long been a name of contempt on the American political right for those who run for office as conservative Republicans and then “grow and mature” in Washington, D.C. by moving to the left. They play to the voters at home in flyover land and then play a different song to The Washington Post when they’re inside the Beltway. However, polling suggests that a new breed of RINOs is emerging, and it has nothing to do with its namesakes of old. These are longtime Republican voters who are identifying less and less with the party’s traditional leadership. Over 60% of Likely Republican Voters have complained in Rasmussen Reports surveys for years that most GOP representatives in Washington are out of touch with the party base. Yes, they’ve been reelected, but in part that’s the power of incumbency. It also reflects the old adage that all politics is local, and these candidates have done a good job assuring the folks back home that they’re one of us.)

The President routinely argues that he receives unfair media coverage and denounces “fake news.” He has even labeled the media the “enemy of the American people.” Earlier this month, the White House Correspondents’ Association, which represents the White House press corps, put out a statement saying that the White House had informed the association that the President would not be attending the dinner in 2018. — Congressional town halls: Old-fashioned and inefficient or vital to the fabric of democracy? – Erin Hegarty (DIERSEN: Ever increasingly, at town halls, Democrats make it clear that they want Republicans to get rid of individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries that are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, draft avoiders, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-town-hall-constituent-meetings-st-0429-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam found himself in the national spotlight last year after critics said he refused to meet with constituents and dodged requests to hold a town-hall style public meeting. Roskam, however, dismissed the traditional in-person format as unproductive and boasted of his ability to reach far more people via convenient telephone town halls, which are arranged by his campaign. As election season returns. so does the debate over the way candidates communicate with voters. . .Roskam, of Wheaton, has been in office since 2007 and conducts tele-town halls once a month. The system auto-dials people in the district and invites them to join the call to listen or get in a queue for the chance to ask a question. While there is generally a specific topic assigned for each event, Roskam does not limit the questions to the theme. In a typical call, about a dozen people get the chance to ask questions. The calls allow Roskam’s office to “reach people where they are, in their homes, while maintaining the one-on-one, personal interactions,” according to Roskam’s office. Roskam has taken calls from both supporters and critics during the forums, which are arranged via his campaign website, roskamforcongress.com. “In these meetings, we engage in open dialogue where they share their perspective,” Roskam said. “Reasonable people can disagree, and I’ve met with people from all different walks of life holding many different views on any number of issues.” Roskam’s challenger in the November election, Democrat Sean Casten, a businessman from Downers Grove, is pushing the sitting congressman to engage in more public in-person forums. Instead, Roskam quickly called for a series of debates the day after Casten was declared winner of the March Democratic primary. . .U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren has conducted meetings with veterans and other town halls, including one in St. Charles last year that attracted about 750 supporters and opponents. But Cindy Mundell, a 67-year-old Naperville resident, has lobbied Hultgren of Plano, to hold more in-person town halls. “He is supposed to be listening to and representing us,” Mundell said. “He claims the majority of his constituents approve the way he votes, and I feel that is unlikely.” Democrat Lauren Underwood is challenging Hultgren in the general election.)

My critics/opponents paint me as being far worse than Breuder. Of course, they side with my Democrat superiors in the federal government and all the adverse actions that they took against me. http://www.dailyherald.com/discuss/20180428/editorial-the-expensive-risk-college-of-dupage-has-placed-on-taxpayers-
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It was almost three years ago that we warned that the College of DuPage Board was risking the public’s money in what we described as its “obsessive and oddly venomous” fixation with the destruction of onetime-president Robert Breuder. While allowing that reasonable people could disagree with Breuder’s style and performance, we also noted that his successor Joseph Collins conceded the controversies that enveloped him were “exaggerated” and his board nemesis Kathy Hamilton acknowledged they were “political.” . . .The legal case has yet to play out so theoretically, we suppose, the college could still win that gamble. But as of our latest tabulation in January, the college’s legal bills in the case had already reached $527,600 and who knows if that’s all of it. Transparency, thy name has not been COD when it comes to all the costs. What we do know is that those bills are going to climb considerably higher. And if the college loses, it not only would be on the hook for whatever damages Breuder wins but most likely also his legal bills as well as the college’s. It’s possible the college’s insurance will pay much of the legal bills. Comforting, although if so, it undoubtedly would affect its future premiums. But it’s also possible its insurer could end up challenging its responsibility if it’s found that the college egregiously mistreated Breuder.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/business/20180428/analysis-facebooks-handpicked-watchdogs-gave-it-high-marks-for-privacy
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook’s mishandling of its users’ personal information prompted stiff penalties from the U.S. government in 2011 — including a requirement that the social giant submit to regular privacy checkups for the next two decades. However, Facebook got to handpick its own reviewers, global accounting firm PwC, which didn’t appear to catch marketers, political consultants and malicious actors as they tapped public and private profile data on Facebook without users’ permission or knowledge, even years after the social giant’s first major privacy mishap.)

https://illinoisfamilyaction.org/2018/04/news-from-the-illinois-political-front-lines-part-1-last-weeks-gop-county-conventions/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On the importance of electing leaders that support the entire Illinois GOP platform (both economic and social issues), Klaas said, “You can’t be fiscally conservative without being morally responsible.” One of the local leaders I spoke with explained that the SCC vote that takes place every four years is the most important duty they have. Why? Because the state-wide leadership too often recruits the kind of candidates who not only do not support our state party platform, but typically lack leadership abilities and prove it when they get elected and show no capacity to even comprehend the power of their bully pulpit let alone become informed and vote in line with the party’s platform on legislation when they’re in Springfield. Is there a conservative majority on the SCC? It’s very close now, but regardless, a government conservative majority can be accomplished in four years.)

And when it comes to Casten’s finances, Republicans are already on the attack. “Sean Casten using his daddy’s money to ensure that a qualified female candidate has no shot to make it out of a primary is both unoriginal and deeply concerning,” National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman Maddie Anderson said in a statement. “In the so-called ‘year of the woman’ – it’s a shame that Casten resorted to attacking Kelly Maseski using dark money once he realized his own message wasn’t enough to carry him across the finish line,” she added.)

I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997. I should a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who hint/imply/argue/shout that because they are FAR SUPERIOR TO ME, they never would have had to take the bad jobs that I took.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) wants you to have a good job. He wants everyone to have a good job. In fact, he wants to guarantee it, and he’s followed Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.) and Cory Booker (N.J.), two other potential Democratic presidential hopefuls, in proposing some sort of program to provide a highly paid job with the federal government to every American who wants one. Unlike other ideas gaining vogue on the left, this actually seems vaguely centrist in its premise, despite its venerable socialist history. Democrats, after all, are the party of big entitlement spending, and Republicans are the party that says “Get a job!” If you smash those two things together, you get something that sounds kind of . . . moderate. At least until you get into the details. Those details, unfortunately, are a devil. Sanders wants the government to provide guaranteed jobs at $15 an hour, plus benefits. His office did not, a representative demurely told Post reporter Jeff Stein, yet have cost estimates for this proposal.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— Winchester retains counsel to challenge voting procedures in GOP Central Committee race – W.J. Kennedy
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511398631-sources-winchester-retains-counsel-to-challenge-voting-procedures-in-gop-central-committee-race
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sources have told Prairie State Wire that Bob Winchester has retained counsel to challenge the voting procedures used in his race for Republican State Central Committee in the 15th Congressional District, which the Illinois Republican Party claims was won by Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet). The first step in the legal action is expected to be an appeal to the Illinois State Board of Elections, which under law, must certify the votes in party elections. Among other charges, Winchester is expected to challenge the use of votes by acclamation in some counties — a move that gives the candidate with more than half of the votes the entire final tally, which violates party rules and may violate state law. Republican sources said that the Republican Party put up Chapin to run against the incumbent Winchester as punishment for his backing Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) in the Republican primary against Gov. Bruce Rauner. Winchester, who could not be reached for comment, also opposes the re-election of GOP Chairman Tim Schneider. The party’s 18 central committee people, one representing each congressional district, is scheduled to meet May 19 to elect a state chairman, and sources say that Schneider’s re-election bid is in jeopardy. Mark Shaw, Lake County Republican chairman and central committeeman in the 10th Congressional District, said that people should not jump to conclusions about the outcome of the race between Winchester and Rose. “Just because the party said Chapin won doesn’t mean he won,” Shaw said. “Until May 19, there is no party governing board, and Chaplin can’t just show up on that day and act like he’s a committeeman. The results have to be certified first, and I expect the board will find a lot of irregularities in the voting process.” He added that he knows Winchester as a man of “integrity and honesty” and he would not be taking legal action unless he was convinced that election law procedures were violated. Results of the election show that Winchester received zero votes in nine of 33 counties, including four of the 10 most populated, a result that Shaw and others said would be impossible. Several counties, sources said, failed to even offer Winchester as a candidate for consideration. In Fayette County, home to Randy Pollard, Rauner’s downstate director, Winchester was not presented as an option. “Pollard asked for a voice vote by acclamation for Chapin (Rose) and just moved on,” a source said. “He didn’t even mention Winchester was a candidate, much less the incumbent.” Rose also received zero votes in 13 counties carried 100 percent by Winchester. In all, 22 of 33 counties voted by acclamation, representing 63 percent of Rose’s vote and 59 percent of Winchester’s. County votes are weighted based on their respective turnout in the March primary. Republican sources also said that aides to U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Collinsville) recruited Rose to challenge Winchester, offering to help him replace Shimkus in Congress when the opportunity presents itself.)

Needless-to-say, no one who uses pot should be allowed a) to own any kind of firearm, ammunition, or weapon; b) to operate any kind of vehicle or equipment, c) to hold any kind of government or political job or office, d) etc. To use pot is to knowingly and willfully damage your brain.)

In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-dupage-salaries-freezes-increases-st-0425-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Board members Elizabeth Chaplin, Tonia Khouri and Brian Krajewski voted against the pay increases. “There’s no justification for giving out those raises,” Chaplin said. “Our county-wides are some of the highest-paid in the state.” “They do a fantastic job, but I think they’re already very well compensated and money is getting tighter and tighter for us,” Khouri said. “We were $3 million short from the state this year, so we need to watch every dollar. For me, it’s an economic issue.” In 2016, County Board members voted themselves 2 percent pay increases, which went into effect in December of that year and again in December of last year. Critics have charged that board salaries are too high in comparison with other nearby counties. Others, however, say the pay is in line with other counties when viewed on a per capita basis. “We understand these are tough times and we don’t feel it’s appropriate to give a pay raise to ourselves,” County Board Chairman Dan Cronin said. “We work very hard, we’ve cut our budget, we’ve cut taxes, we’ve reduced headcount and we’ve got a very compelling story to tell about good government here. We’re not in it for the money, we’re in it to serve.” In other county business, District 1 representative Paul Fichtner has resigned from the County Board due to a job change. Cronin said a replacement will be appointed in two weeks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just over a month after her narrow primary election loss to incumbent Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, state Rep. Jeanne Ives said she’ll continue to spread her message across the state. “I have a responsibility. I can’t just hide,” said Ives, a Wheaton Republican, during a stop at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel to address members of the Restore Our Constitution political group. “I’m not going to hide or go away. I’m not going to do that.” Ives said she plans to tour the state raising awareness of issues such as pensions and fiscal responsibility, and campaigning for fellow Republican candidates in an effort to win a majority in the state House of Representatives. How she will do the latter remains undetermined. She said she has already endorsed several candidates and given them information to use in political ads and talking points, such as their Democratic opponents’ voting records and ratings with different business groups. Ives said it is likely she will also start to make campaign visits with Republican candidates as the election season heads into the summer.)

Governor Rauner and Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti are touring Europe and the state, respectively, to seek answers on vocational and training programs for Illinois youth. YouthBuild Mclean County in Central Illinois is one program close to home that is currently fulfilling the requirements. “Many decades ago our school system used to offer apprenticeship tracks”, said Lt. DAILY HERALD
— Some raises, some pay freezes for DuPage County officials – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180424/some-raises-some-pay-freezes-for-dupage-county-officials–
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Salaries will be frozen for a dozen DuPage County Board members and the chairman for at least the next four years. Meanwhile, several countywide officials will get 2 percent annual pay hikes during each of the next two years before their pay is frozen in fiscal 2021 and 2022. The raises — and freezes — were approved Tuesday when the county board set pay scales for the sheriff, treasurer, county clerk, county board chairman and 12 county board members for the next four years. All the positions are up for election in November. DuPage board members will continue to make $52,102. They also are eligible to receive health insurance and a pension through the county. The board chairman is the only countywide elected official who won’t get a pay raise; the position pays $131,559 a year. As for other countywide officials, the county clerk and treasurer will have their annual salaries increase by 2 percent to $148,395 when fiscal 2019 begins on Dec. 1. Their pay will increase to $151,363 for fiscal 2020. The sheriff will be paid $171,462 for fiscal 2019 and $174,891 for fiscal 2020. Also on Tuesday, the county board agreed to increase the amount DuPage contributes to the annual salary for the regional superintendent of schools. Darlene Ruscitti gets an annual salary of $113,900 from the state. The county then pays her an additional amount. Starting July 1, 2019, the amount will increase by 2 percent to $33,246. It will increase by another 2 percent to $33,911 in 2020.)

As part of the settlement, Cronin said: Liberty Systems will not be paid for the kits that supplied the ender cards. Three other contracts with Liberty Systems will be terminated immediately. The commission will seek other bids for election supplies to be used in the November election and Liberty Systems will not be considered. The company will repair or replace 167 machines damaged by the faulty ender cards. The company will compensate the county for the overtime costs incurred on election night. . .In addition to the settlement, Cronin said the commission is acting on his request to bring in additional staff for election oversight.)

— The more you have, the more you think you need – Matt Wade (DIERSEN: How much money does your standard of living require? My Civil Service Retirement System pension of $51,864 is only 41% of what my 1997 salary was in today’s dollars – $125,325.)
https://www.smh.com.au/national/the-more-you-have-the-more-you-think-you-need-20180420-p4zatb.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In fact, the opposite is true – those on higher incomes felt they needed much more to alleviate their cost pressures than those on low incomes. Respondents who earned less than $35,000 a year (a little less than Australia’s full-time minimum wage) said they needed an extra $183 a week to alleviate cost of living pressures. But for those in the $75,000-100,000 income bracket that figure rose to $220 a week. And people taking home $100,000 or more a year required even more. That well-paid cohort said they needed $239 extra each week to ease the pressure, more than any other income group. But the responses to NAB’s “how much extra money do you need” question shows that for those on higher incomes the problem is a desire for a certain standard of living rather than a cost of living crisis.)

In my defense, I do not ask for such money and I do not accept such money. He who pays the piper calls the tunes, and I do not want any individual, organization, or company to call my tunes. Further, I have enough time (10+ hours a day, 70+ hours a week, 300+ hours a month, 3,650+ hours a year, 36,500+ hours a decade) and money (thousands of dollars each year) to put the emails together and send them out each and every morning and each and every evening free of charge and without any advertising. The training glorifies and praises those who are NOT Protestant, NOT conservative, NOT patriotic, NOT Republican, NOT American, NOT White, NOT male, NOT older, NOT rich, NOT gun owners, NOT German American, and those whose ancestors have NOT been in America for a long time.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/lake-county-news-sun/news/ct-lns-waukegan-60-diversity-st-0421-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The teacher, who is white, retold the rhyme, using the racial slur, during a February vocabulary lesson, Alajakis said. A student then reported the teacher’s use of the slur to the school principal, Alajakis said. The teacher was pulled from the classroom during an investigation into the matter, and later temporarily suspended, Alajakis said. He also was ordered to take cultural sensitivity training and moved to another building, Alajakis said. The teacher has not yet completed the training because the district is still working to identify a course, Alajakis said. Nevertheless, the incident is emblematic of a larger problem at Waukegan District 60, retired Waukegan administrator Harlene Shipley said. District officials should place a greater focus on cultural diversity training so that teachers can better understand their pupils, Shipley said. As another example, Shipley also pointed to a group of former Waukegan High School students who had addressed the school board in February about providing training and specialized resources aimed at students living in the country without legal permission. They also spoke about district staff not understanding them and what they’re going through, Shipley said. If teachers underwent diversity and cultural awareness training they would be less likely to speak insensitively, to know where potential pitfalls existed and to find educational opportunities in cultural items such as the new “Black Panther” movie, Shipley said.)

I would suggest that instead of spending countless millions on radio and TV ads, polling data and opponent research, we post the Illinois governorship on eBay. (FROM THE LETTER: It is ironic that the master architect of the tax cut, who significantly reduced the popular property tax deduction in the first place, would now promote himself as a champion of taxpayers’ rights. His use of taxpayer dollars to fund his self-promotion campaign is a double whammy for District 6 constituents. Roskam is tone deaf to his constituents’ views. Why does he think that all of those people waited in long lines at the end of the year to prepay property taxes? Maybe he thinks they had nothing better to do with their time during the holidays. What about the many families in District 6 that couldn’t prepay property taxes even if they wanted to. Who has an extra $10,000 or more lying around for this kind of expenditure when they are saving for their children’s college, a 401(K), or possibly even their mortgage payment?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Brady acted as a defacto spokesman for Rauner during the primary, making regular media appearances where he would attack Ives, though he was never formally identified as such. He dubbed Ives and her supporters “haters” for opposing Rauner’s policy positions as governor. “There is no room in the Republican Party for racist, bigoted, homophobic candidates like her,” Brady said in February, after Ives ran a television ad criticizing Rauner’s support of taxpayer-funded abortions, “Sanctuary State” legislation and allowing Illinoisans to change the biological sex on their birth certificates.” Brady said Ives was too “extreme” and could not win a statewide election. In 2016, Brady actively opposed President Donald Trump, saying a vote for him is “a vote for Hillary Clinton.” “(Trump) gets creamed by Hillary Clinton,” Brady said. “I don’t care what anybody says, there’s absolutely no way that if he goes against Hillary Clinton, that he’s going to prevail.” Brady served as Illinois GOP Chairman from 2009 to 2013 before he was forced to resign after trying to change the party platform to support gay marriage. He was later hired by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to lobby for gay marriage in Illinois. Stratemeyer feels the local Republican party is in good shape. “Our organization is strong, we have a lot of volunteers, and our slate is full. I do anticipate a very successful election of the local candidates in Marion County,” said Stratemeyer. Shaefer was unanimously elected as 1st Vice Chair after several others declined the nomination. While this election may be over, Harlan is not giving up on his passion for true political reform. “I am never opposed to running if no one else steps forward,” Harland said. “I believe that we should always provide an option for others to vote on. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/syracuse-university-suspends-fraternity-after-extremely-racist-video-surfaces-n867401
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The videos, Syverud said in a letter to the campus, includes “words and behaviors that are extremely racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, sexist, and hostile to people with disabilities. I am appalled and shaken by this and deeply concerned for all members of our community.” Earlier Wednesday, Syracuse students demonstrated in front of the chancellor’s building and the Theta Tau fraternity to demand the release of the videos after they were removed from Facebook. Later, The Daily Orange, an independently run school newspaper, shared a copy of a six-minute video from a new member ceremony last month. In it, the brothers take part in a performance that includes one person reciting an oath: “I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart,” he says, then referring to blacks, Hispanics and Jews in derogatory terms. He then mimics performing oral sex on another person. Participants laugh and cheer throughout. Theta Tau updated its website Thursday to apologize for the video and explain why it was done. The fraternity said that each semester, new members are given a chance to write a skit to roast the active brothers. One skit was meant as a parody in order to roast a brother who is a conservative Republican. The new members pretended to be racist conservative character. “It was a satirical sketch of an uneducated, racist, homophobic, misogynist, sexist, ableist and intolerant person. The young man playing the part of this character nor the young man being roasted do not hold any of the horrible views espoused as a part of that sketch,” Theta Tau said. The fraternity added that it has a diverse membership, but that “many bright lines were obviously crossed.” The group added that it would “maintain a dialogue” with fellow students.)

The College Board pegs the average annual cost, over all, at in-state institutions at $25,290. If your student is turning the tassel this spring, congratulations. Your checkbook deserves a well-earned breather. It might have to endure one last flogging, though. Should that sheepskin result in a job (and let’s hope so!) a vehicle may be needed. Or maybe you have a high school graduate who will be commuting to college, or one diving straight into the working world. Sending them off with a solid automobile is a terrific — albeit extravagant — graduation gift. Even if it’s simply a hefty down payment to get them started, think of it as a final investment. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2018/04/20/mulvaney-defends-pay-freeze-even-for-feds-he-knows-are-underpaid/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Office of Management and Budget director Mick Mulvaney told a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday that an “analysis of the way that we paid federal workers seemed to indicate that we overpay at the lower levels and underpay at the upper levels.” But he defended the freeze proposed in Trump’s fiscal 2019 budget plan, saying, “We’re going to freeze everybody, and then put a bunch of money in this pot to try to give us the flexibility necessary to reward the people that were really performing well.” Some employees “might be really good at their jobs,” he added, “and some of the might not be, yet we . . . come close to paying them pretty much the same. ” Mulvaney indicated that the General Schedule (GS), the federal pay system for 70 percent of federal employees, has outlived its usefulness. It was created in 1949 and “hasn’t really been dramatically overhauled since then,” he said. “And it’s led to a situation where we pay entry level more than we probably should, but we don’t pay the really advanced, experienced people as much as we should.”)

– Who are the candidates for the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committee position for your congressional district, how well do you know them, what have they promised to do if elected, who has endorsed them, which ones are you going to vote for, and why?
– Who are the newly elected officers of your Republican township party organization, how well do you know them, what did they promise to do if elected, who endorsed them?

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Toni Preckwinkle expected to ascend to Cook County Democratic chairman today – Hal Dardick (DIERSEN: Why isn’t the Chicago Tribune reporting like this on races for a) Illinois Republican Party (IRP) county and township party offices and b) IRP State Central Committeemen offices?)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-preckwinkle-democratic-chairman-20180417-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every two years, potential candidates line up to make their pitches to party leaders. The ones who win endorsement are asked to contribute $40,000 to the party, which uses the money on election mailings, robocalls and get-out-the-vote efforts. And when the primaries are done, the party works to elect the nominees in the general election. The names of endorsed candidates are placed on palm cards — lists of party-endorsed candidates handed out by precinct committeemen. But what was once a monolithic effort is no longer. Many ward and township committeemen now go their own way, omitting the names of endorsed candidates and sometimes replacing them with their preferred candidates — as happened with Kaegi in many townships and wards.)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/machine-shifting-gears-toni-preckwinkle-poised-to-make-history/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Given this moment of heightened racial awareness … having a black woman as head of the political party in Cook County says that at least there is an overt acknowledgement that African Americans and women are good leaders,” said Jacky Grimshaw, a former aide to Mayor Harold Washington, the city’s first black mayor. “That’s not to say that the party has overcome its racial bias.” The party that Preckwinkle would lead looks different than the one Berrios took over in 2007. Berrios spokeswoman Monica Trevino said in a statement that under Berrios’ leadership, the number of minority Democratic candidates increased by 76 percent, and twice as many women have been slated for countywide office. “The leadership of the Cook County Democratic Party is mostly men, mostly white and mostly old school,” Carol Marin wrote in a 2007 Sun-Times column prior to Berrios’ election as chairman. Berrios took over shortly before Barack Obama won his election as the first African American U.S. president. “There’s even more reason to breathe some life, some youth and some real diversity into the leadership of this sickly organization,” Marin wrote back then.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— The top large companies to work for – MONICA GINSBURG (DIERSEN: The Democrats who run the federal government could hint/imply/argue/shout that the federal government is the best place to work for if you are a Democrat, and especially if you are minority, female, younger, and/or veteran. The federal government uses Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion to waste the careers of and to get rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran that it does not promote to GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20180417/bill-giving-cities-control-over-assault-weapons-rules-passes-senate-committee
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Critics charged, however, the legislation would threaten people’s constitutional rights and the lack of uniformity in the “patchwork” of ordinances could lead to confusion that would open up gun owners to criminal liability. “When you talk about patchwork and you bring in cell phones and cigarettes, they don’t compare,” said Ed Sullivan of the Illinois Rifle Association. “You don’t have a right to a cigarette or a right to a cell phone, but you do have a constitutional right to a semiautomatic weapon.”)
— Time to throw away golden parachutes for public employees – Editorial (DIERSEN: Do/will my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes paint my early retirement as being a “golden parachute?” Since September of 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors have had the Civil Service Retirement System pay me $4,322/month in today’s dollars TO NOT COME TO WORK. So far, in today’s dollars, that has been $1,067,534. However, being forced to retire is an “adverse action.”)

EVANSTON ROUNDTABLE
— Nichols’ Use of Racial Affinity Groups Questioned, and Defended – Larry Gavin
http://evanstonroundtable.com/Main.asp?SectionID=16&SubSectionID=27&ArticleID=14941
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Commissioner Kirsanow’s Letter Mr. Kirsanow, an African American who is generally regarded as holding conservative views, made clear in his letter that he was sending the letter as one member of the Commission, not on behalf of the Commission. Mr. Kirsanow said he assumes the segregated meetings were instituted in response to a recommendation in District 65’s May 2017 Equity Report that the District create “social identity affinity groups.” He said, “I am astonished that District 65 spent taxpayer money on a report that includes the recommendation, ‘separate teachers by race.’ Separating teachers by race fosters racial division and is prima facie unlawful. By its nature, it forces teachers to view themselves in terms of what divides them, rather than what they have in common. It also encourages a binary view of society that, depending on your perspective, is either, ‘whites against everyone else’ or ‘everyone else against whites.’ It may even foster a sense among both groups that they are threatened by the other. “However well-intentioned, this is segregation for the 21st century,” Mr. Kirsanow said. “Unless a legitimate, nondiscriminatory educational reason can be articulated, the segregation almost certainly would be found unlawful. Discussions of politically correct notions of ‘privilege,’ unsupported by methodological rigor, do not qualify as legitimate reasons, and they are by their own definition discriminatory.” The letter also suggested that the District’s hiring practices may run afoul of prohibitions against racial discrimination in hiring. He also raised a question about the Equity Report’s analysis of the achievement gap. While stating that the achievement gap is concerning, he says, “It’s interesting that the equity report assiduously avoids any examination of the home lives of the children as a possible partial explanation for the achievement gap. “The racially-conscious efforts you and District 65 have undertaken will foster racial division instead of racial understanding. Sending teachers to racially separate meetings is a stark picture of the future you are sowing. You are encouraging students and teachers to view each other as members of groups, not as individuals.”)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives disappointed with House members who shot down victims right to notification about ethics complaints – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: Constructively, federal employees who file complains about patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation have “no rights at all.” The federal government is run by Democrats who promote patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation. Republican Presidents, Republican U.S. Senators, and Republican U.S. Representatives have done little or nothing about the aforesaid. They certainly threw me under the bus, they certainly flushed me down their toilet.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) has rarely ever been more disappointed in the actions of lawmakers in Springfield than she is over the way they ultimately responded to House Bill 4840. “I thought this would be an easy bill to get out of committee,” Ives told the Prairie State Wire of the bill she argues would have given Illinois residents who file an ethics complaint with the sate inspector general more of a voice in the process. “It made complete sense to me because as it is they have no rights at all.”)

— Prizes for Everyone: How Colleges Use Scholarships to Lure Students Merit awards are important component of many schools’ enrollment strategies – Melissa Korn (DIERSEN: When you were in high school, how much “merit” did you display? Were you considered to be college material? While I attended Crete-Monee High School 1962-1966, I took college preparatory courses notwithstanding the fact that many, if not most, if not virtually everyone at the time viewed me as NOT being “college material.” Neither of my parents had attended college. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, I was draft bait, my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, I had partial red/green color blindness, and I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). Further, my father had fought type 1 diabetes from age 14. I am sure that many thought that I would soon come down with type 1 diabetes too.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/prizes-for-everyone-how-colleges-use-scholarships-to-lure-students-1523957400
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At George Washington University, nearly half of all undergraduates receive the school’s Presidential Academic Scholarship. The prizes go to “the most competitive applicants in the pool,” admissions materials say, and include awards of $5,000 to $30,000 for each student. At some other colleges, a solid majority of students get similarly hefty scholarships. At still others, virtually everyone gets them. Hundreds of colleges and universities are using academic scholarships and other merit-based financial aid to gain an edge in a battle for students. The scholarships make students feel wanted and let families think they’re getting a good deal, like a shopper who buys an expensive sweater on sale.)
