November 10 Morning Edition

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Why Trump’s big win means problems for Gov. Rauner – Rick Pearson and John Byrne  (DIERSEN: In Illinois, in your county, in your township/ward, and in your municipality, after Trump won the Republican nomination, which “Republican” activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. a) failed/refused to support Trump and b) demonized, denigrated, or condemned Trump and/or his supporters?  One could argue that the aforesaid should immediately resign from any government and/or political positions that they might hold as Republicans.  Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform.  Trump has promised to defend and advance the Republican Party platform.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-bruce-rauner-donald-trump-met-1110-20161109-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The impending arrival of Donald Trump in the White House is creating a strange political landscape for Bruce Rauner to navigate at the governor’s mansion. The Republican governor spent the better part of a year refusing to discuss the eventual GOP presidential nominee and wouldn’t even speak Trump’s name. At the time, Rauner was trying to walk the tightrope of not providing Democrats with fodder to attack him during their budget battle while also not invoking Trump’s wrath by directly criticizing him. Now not only will Rauner continue to be asked to weigh in on Trump and every controversial move the future president makes, but he’ll be doing so with his own 2018 re-election bid at stake. Rauner remains the undisputed leader of the Illinois Republican Party, and Trump enjoyed widespread support Downstate in Tuesday’s election, even if he lost badly to Democrat Hillary Clinton in Chicago and the suburbs. Trump won 92 of 102 Illinois counties and racked up 50- and 60-percentage point margins in far southern Illinois. Disagreeing with Trump carries great political risk for Rauner among a key voting bloc two years from now. The great irony of Tuesday’s election for the governor is that as much as he and other top Illinois Republicans avoided or ran away from their party’s presidential nominee, Trump and his strong showing Downstate is a big reason Rauner was able to cut into Democratic nemesis Michael Madigan’s supermajority. Rauner wasn’t quite ready to field a spate of Trump questions the day after the election. The governor has kept a low public profile the past few weeks, and that continued Wednesday. His office issued a statement that didn’t mention the president-elect and said only that after “a long, grueling campaign cycle, both nationally and locally,” it was time to “put the election behind us” and “come together.”)

— Trump lost in Will County, but support was strong  Many wanted Trump, but weren’t saying – BOB OKON  (DIERSEN: For the November 8, 2016 election, how focused were a) the officers of your Republican township/ward party organization, b) the officers of your Republican county party organization, c) your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, and d) the officers of the IRP on electing local candidates as opposed to electing Trump/Pence?)
http://www.theherald-news.com/2016/11/09/trump-lost-in-will-county-but-support-was-strong/a1ltfj5/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump’s victory may have stunned some, but not everyone. Even in Illinois, the only old Rust Belt state that went for Hillary Clinton, some were sensing a strong undercurrent for Trump. “I talk to a lot of people in my position,” said Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, referring to conversations with other mayors. “One out of 50 was voting for Clinton. The vast majority were going to vote for Trump, but they weren’t going to talk about it because Clinton’s supporters were so vocal.” Claar was an open Trump supporter who threw a fundraiser for the candidate and was a Trump delegate at the Republican convention. But, Claar said supporting Trump could bring on a backlash that many wanted to avoid. Clinton won Will County with just less than 50 percent of the vote compared with Trump’s 44 percent. But Trump got almost 130,000 votes, and not all those voters were quiet about who they were supporting. Will County Board member Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, said one question he faced frequently as he campaigned door-to-door was how he was voting for president. “Not everyone wanted to talk,” Balich said. “But when they did, usually they said, ‘Are you for Trump?’ ”  Balich was. But even the party establishment didn’t want local candidates to talk about Trump, he said. “The establishment Republicans were saying, ‘We can’t win Illinois. Don’t talk about Trump,’ ” Balich said. Signs of support  Balich not only talked about Trump, he passed out 350 Trump campaign signs because people wanted them. Balich started out with 100 signs he bought from the Will County Republican Party, which obtained them from the Trump campaign. After passing out the first 100 signs, he said, “I went back and got another 200. I passed all those out. I went back and got another 50 and passed them out.” There was speculation that Trump would hurt local Republicans by being on the top of the ballot. But in the days before the election, Will County Republican Party Chairwoman Kathy Havel said she expected Trump would help local candidates, noting the high demand for signs. “I thought he helped a lot,” Balich said of his campaign in District 7, which saw him re-elected. “But I didn’t run away from him. I don’t know what other people did.”)

AMERICAN THINKER
— The ‘progressives’ are sending intimidating emails (in Illinois Congressional District 10) threatening to ‘out’ you – Ed Lasky
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2016/11/the_progressives_are_sending_intimidating_emails_threatening_to_out_you.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I happen to live in a suburb and district that, too often, votes for Democrats (Illinois 10th, where we are currently represented by a Republican, Bob Dold). This year people in my suburb are getting mailed notices with their names on top and underneath their names, in bold print,  “Official Voting Record”.  What follows is a rundown on the history of the recipients’ voting record since 2008 in general elections — not who they voted for but whether they voted. Underneath that record is a notification that, while your vote may be secret, whether or not you vote is a matter of public record. . .The mailing continues: This year we’re sending you and your neighbors those records to help you keep track of your civic participation. How would your friends, family and neighbors feel if they saw your voting record and knew you were an infrequent voter”  Do your part and make a plan to vote on Tuesday, November 8th. In small fine print is a notice that the mailing was paid for by the “Progressive Turnout Project” and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. However, if one turns to the website of the group, http://www.turnoutpac.org/, one can see in bold headlines “Connecting with voters and getting Democrats to the polls.” At the bottom of the first page is a local P.O. Box address, leading one to think (wrongly) that the group is truly a local, grassroots effort-as they pitch themselves to be. That would be, naturally, a lie. Clicking through the website will show no names of who is running and funding this project, but one will see the races they are targeting across the country. They are in battleground districts with a substantial number of Democrats. Every single politician this group is targeting is a Republican. This “grassroots group” is no such thing and though it may boast it is some sort of civic group that is not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee, it is in reality an AstroTurf (fake grassroots) group, funded by the Democratic Party or its allies to increase the turnout of people who will likely vote Democratic. My friend who shared the mailing with me is not registered as a Democrat or Republican. I am registered as a Republican and did not get the mailing. Clearly the mailing was geared towards increasing the number of votes for the Democrat running in my district, since it is likely that people who are not registered as Republicans would be inclined to vote Democratic. As mentioned above, this district is very mixed between Republicans and Democrats. If you exclude from the mailings registered Republicans, the group increases the odds that their mailings can intimidate people into going to the polls and voting Democratic.  But what is most offensive is the intimidation and threat of exposure (blackmail?) to one’s friends, family and neighbors that you chose not to vote. This tactic is underhanded and repugnant-something that should not surprise since the Democratic Party, as Kimberly Strassel has written in her outstanding book, “The Intimidation Game” and as Project Veritas Action has shown with its videos, specialize in intimidation.)

https://www.eparisextra.com/all-business/114668/its-national-save-for-retirement-week-so-take-action__trashed
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Congress has dedicated the third week of October as National Save for Retirement Week. Clearly, the government feels the need to urge people to do a better job of preparing for retirement. Are you doing all you can? Many of your peers aren’t – or at least they think they aren’t. In a recent survey conducted by Bankrate.com, respondents reported that “not saving for retirement early enough” was their biggest financial regret. Other evidence seems to show they have good cause for remorse: 52% of households 55 and older haven’t saved anything for retirement, according to a report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, although half of this group reported having a pension. Obviously, you’ll want to avoid having either financial regrets or major shortfalls in your retirement savings. And that means you may need to consider making moves such as these: Take advantage of all your opportunities. You may well have access to more than one tax-advantaged retirement plan. Your employer may offer a 401(k) or similar plan, and even if you participate in your employer’s plan, you are probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA. You may not be able to afford to “max out” on both plans, but try to contribute as much as you can afford. At the very least, put in enough to your employer’s plan to earn a matching contribution, if one is offered, and boost your annual contributions every year in which your salary goes up.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I have always been “bad” and that they have always been “good.”  To paint me as being “bad,” they stress that I am White, male, old (born in 1948), non-veteran, 100% German national origin, baptized, raised and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, conservative, Republican, a Wheaton resident since 1978, a Crete resident 1948-1972, non-poor, gun owner, my ancestors have been in America since the 1840s, childless, petless, union member for almost 12 years, federal employee for almost 30 years, retired federal employee for more that 19 years, American-nameplate car owner, etc.)

— The Post-Familial Election  How the thinning out of families created fertile ground for Trump. – Ross Douthat  (DIERSEN: How is your family tree doing?  How many children did you and your spouse have, did your parents have, and did your grandparents have?  My wife and I gave up trying to have children, my parents had two children, my grandparents on my father’s side had two children and my grandparents on my mother’s side had four children.  My brother and my father’s sister never married and had no children.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/06/opinion/sunday/the-post-familial-election.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So instead of widening, my family tree tapered, its branches thinned. And it may thin again, since so far the seven cousins in my generation have only three children. All of them are mine. This is a very normal Western family history. Everywhere across the developed world, families have grown more attenuated: fewer and later marriages, fewer and later-born children, fewer brothers and sisters and cousins, more people living for longer and longer stretches on their own. It’s a new model of social life, a “post-familial” revolution that’s unique to late modernity. For a while, conservatives have worried that this revolution is a boon to liberalism, to centralization and bureaucratic control — because as families thin people are more likely to look to politics for community and government for protection. This idea is borne out in voting patterns, where marriage and kids tend to predict Republican affiliation, and the single and divorced are often reliable Democratic partisans. The Obama White House’s “Life of Julia” ad campaign in 2012 — featuring a woman whose every choice was subsidized by the government from cradle to grave, with a lone child but no larger family or community in sight — seemed to many conservatives like a perfect confirmation of our fears: Here was liberalism explicitly pitching the state as a substitute for kith and kin. But while we worried about the liberal vision, our own ideological side was adapting to the family’s attenuation in darker ways — speaking not to singletons or single mothers, but to powerful post-familial anxieties among the middle-aged and old.)

LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL

http://www.reviewjournal.com/the-real-national-embarrassment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All this suggests an obvious immigration agenda.  First, we need to reduce illegal immigrants, both because illegality is bad in its own right and because the constant inflow frustrates assimilation. To further discourage illegal immigration, we should make E-Verify — a system for employers to check the immigration status of job applicants — mandatory for most businesses. We also need to legalize the vast majority of undocumented workers who have been here for years and don’t have a criminal record. Finally, we need to reform legal immigration so that it favors the entry of high-skilled workers, who aid the economy and assimilate more easily.)

http://www.nationalmemo.com/review-listen-liberals-political-rage-americas-dispossessed/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Five years ago, the sociologist Arlie Hochschild set out to better understand what she called the “deep story” of the mostly white, mostly downwardly mobile Americans who made up the fervent constituency of the Tea Party, and now of Donald Trump. These are the people who ostensibly vote against their economic self-interests, as Thomas Frank contended more than a decade ago in What’s the Matter with Kansas? Subsequently, to get 3 years of full-time CSRS credit even though I had only worked part-time for the Park Forest Post Office, I paid CSRS 7% of what the Post Office paid me 1966-1969 plus interest.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Baby Boomers Blew It  We Baby Boomers did fail when planning for our financial future, but part of the problem is that our future is being prolonged. We are living longer and therefore outliving our resources. In 1900, the average lifespan was 47 years. Today, AARP reports that a 65-year old is expected to be able to blow out their birthday candles at 85 years of age. Wow, get out and enjoy your retirement. This is great news unless you happen to be an average American, between the age of 55 and 64, who has only accrued $104,000 in retirement savings, according to the June 2015 Government Accountability Office. To sum this up, a longer life span means that 47 percent of the oldest Baby Boomers are at risk of not having enough money for retirement, as reported by Employee Benefit Research Institute. Options are scary. Keep working? Live with the kids? Your choices get limited. We Baby Boomers have not set a great example for the Gen Z’ers who are just getting out of school, entering the workforce and trying to design their own financial futures.)

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/11/04/gop-congressman-threatens-hearing-on-medias-surreptitious-propaganda/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rep. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said in a letter to television executives on Friday that “national network news has devolved from fact-based journalism to surreptitious propaganda,” and he raised the specter of a congressional hearing to “explore network media bias in coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign.”  Cramer’s timing is a bit odd. The election is Tuesday, meaning that any such hearing would come too late to affect coverage of the race (although, of course, the prospect of such a hearing is being raised in the campaign homestretch). It is possible that Cramer, a strong supporter of Donald Trump, is merely throwing a symbolic grenade at a press corps that the Republican nominee derides on a daily basis. Cramer does not have a hearing on the books; his letter indicated that he has not even requested one. He simply said that he plans to ask for a hearing.)

ATLANTIC SENTINEL
— Prevalence, Impact and Assimilation of German Americans  German Americans have been something of a silent majority, despite their significant contributions to the culture. – Nick Ottens (DIERSEN: What is your national origin?  During the 1840s and 1850s, all my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois from what is now Germany.  Of course, obviously, needless-to-say, and without question, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always used that against me. In my defense, I stress that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans during WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII, and that my father would have fought the Germans during WWII if he had not been 4-F.  Further, according to
http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece.)
http://atlanticsentinel.com/2016/11/prevalence-impact-and-assimilation-of-german-americans/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: German Americans are the largest ancestry group in the United States. Some 46 million Americans, comprising 14 percent of the population, claim German roots. Germans have been part of American history almost from the start. The first German immigrants settled in rural Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Many were Protestants who had made the journey to the New World from predominantly Catholic parts of Central Europe. A second, larger immigration wave would come in the nineteenth century, when around seven million Germans arrived, doubling the population of the United States at the time. Many of them established farms in the Midwest, leading to a heavy concentration of German Americans in states like Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas. Impact  German Protestants and Jews tended to vote Republican; most Catholics were Democrats. What united them was opposition to slavery and Prohibition and in general a mistrust of Southern populists and New England puritans alike. Germans played an important role in the early American labor and socialist movements, which were strongest in those Midwestern states that had large German minorities. Milwaukee, for example, was the only major city in America with socialist mayors for a long time. German contributions to American culture include beer, hot dogs, Christmas trees and kindergarten (literally, “garden for children”). Companies such as Boeing, Goldman Sachs, Heinz, Kraft Foods, Lehman Brothers and Levi’s were all started by Germans. Prejudice  There had been little prejudice against German until the United States entered World War I on the Allied side in 1917. Former president Theodore Roosevelt denounced “hyphenated Americanism”. Anti-German bigotry became widespread. A German minister was tarred and feathered in Minnesota after he was overheard praying in his native language with a dying woman. A man suspected of spying for the Germans was lynched in Collinsville, Illinois. The Justice Department was no help. It drew up a list of all German aliens in the country, counting some 480,000. More than 4,000 of them were incarcerated until the hostilities in Europe ended a year later. Ordinary Germans responded by speaking English in public and anglicizing their names: Koenig became King, Müller became Miller, Schmidt became Smith. The German American experience during the Second World War was mixed. Nearly 11,000 German citizens were interned and some 300,000 German-born residents were restricted in their travel and property rights. But President Franklin D. Roosevelt — Theodore’s nephew — also sought out German Americans for top war posts, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who spearheaded the Allied war effort in Europe, and Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was the American naval commander in the Pacific. German speakers were recruited as translators and spies. Very few sympathized with the Nazis. Assimilation  Despite their numerical preponderance, German Americans have been something of a silent majority throughout American history. Partly that’s because they themselves deemphasized their Germanness in the first half of the twentieth century. Barely any German speakers remain. Many first-generation German immigrants were also poor, uneducated farmers, who spread out across the Midwest, unlike, say, more middle-class Irishmen and Italians, many of whom settled in the big cities of the Northeast where they could more easily become a political force. Whether it is in spite or because of this process of assimilation, German Americans now do better than most ethnicities on many metrics. They are more likely to have college degrees and less likely to be unemployed. Their median household income is 18 percent above the national norm. Well-known German Americans include former House speaker John Boehner, former secretary of state Henry Kissinger, the architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the oil magnate John D. Rockefeller and the actress Meryl Streep — as well as the current Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161102/discuss/161109662/
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The public pension crisis in Illinois is a runaway train. So when we see someone actually try to apply the brakes, we take notice. The DuPage County Forest Preserve District this week approved a sweeping series of changes to its employee pay policies that leaders predict will save the county $6 million over the next 20 years. That might not seem like a lot of money, but it’s not chump change. What it is an important step in the right direction. Just think of how this could mushroom if similar steps were taken in many of the other 6,900-plus taxing bodies in Illinois. A story today by staff writer Robert Sanchez lays out how forest preserve commissioners have decided to ratchet down an established bonus program and also put the brakes on lump-sum payouts to qualifying or retiring employees for unused sick time. “These changes will curb long-term spending, especially in the area of pension costs,” Commissioner Jeff Redick said, “and allow us to responsibly serve the taxpayers and both our current and future employees.” The district for years has handed out longevity-based bonuses to retiring or qualifying employees that averaged $15,000 to $20,000. You don’t find that in a lot of private-sector jobs. Not anymore. Nor do you find many companies that still — if ever — reimburse employees for unused sick time. The district isn’t going to take money from people already expecting it. Like companies that have eliminated their 401(k) contributions in lean times, those employees who already are in the bonus program — called a “retention incentive” program — will still get bonuses, but starting Jan. 1 they no longer will grow. Those who haven’t yet qualified for the bonus program never will. The district also is putting limits on lump-sum payments for sick days accrued after the start of next year. What is even more important is that the forest preserve district has decided to eliminate both the bonus and sick time payback from the calculation of pensions. That in itself is expected to save $4.5 million in pension liability over the next 20 years. In a time when pension payments in some cases are reaching a tipping point with operational costs for governmental bodies, it’s important to look toward ways in which the private sector has managed to stay afloat in tough financial times. Other taxing bodies should follow this example.)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/trump-katy-tur-florida-rally_us_581aa7b8e4b0c43e6c1e1795
(FROM THE ARTICLE: GOP nominee Donald Trump singled out NBC News reporter Katy Tur on Wednesday during a rally in Florida, continuing to taunt reporters covering his campaign. Tur has been embedded with the Trump campaign, following the candidate throughout the presidential race. Trump in the past has called out Tur publicly by name, and has referred to her as “Little Katy, third-rate journalist.” During his usual takedown of the “dishonest media” in Miami on Wednesday, Trump called out the press  – and specifically Tur – for being biased and not reporting fairly on his campaign. “We have massive crowds. They’re something happening. They’re not reporting it. Katy, you’re not reporting it, Katy.” Trump said to cheers. “But there’s something  happening, Katy. There’s something happening, Katy.” CNN host Wolf Blitzer last week asked Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway to talk to the Republican nominee about singling out reporters, especially those embedded with the campaign, citing safety concerns. “He points to them, he sort of eggs the crowd on to go after them,” Blitzer said. “There are a lot of young journalists. He shouldn’t be doing that.” Conway appeared on Blitzer’s CNN show later Wednesday and defended Trump, saying he didn’t intend to suggest that anyone be mean to Tur or to attack her. “After he did that . . . she was harassed by a lot of the people over there,” Blitzer said. “The last time we spoke, you told me you shared my concerns about the singling out of these embeds … You said you would talk to him. How did that conversation go?” “The conversation was very productive and I’ve also talked to NBC News today,” Conway said. “Look, we want fair coverage and we wan’t everybody to be safe at our rallies. I don’t appreciate a lot of the threats I get either from people who I guess are worried that we may actually win this thing.” After Trump taunted Tur, other journalists tweeted #ImWithTur in support of the NBC News reporter. Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims – 1.6 billion members of an entire religion – from entering the U.S.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-staples-student-loan-help-1102-20161102-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Saples has become the latest company trying to attract and keep young workers who are fretting about how they will pay their college student loans. The company announced Wednesday that it will provide $100 a month for up to 36 months to full-time sales associates and “high potential” and “top performing” employees who are paying off student loans or in the process of earning a degree. With unemployment low, many companies are struggling to pull in and retain dedicated young workers with good skills, and increasingly they are eyeing help with student loans as a means to stand out as an employer, said Gary Kushner, president of Kushner & Co. a Michigan-based benefits consulting firm. While large companies such as Fidelity Investments and PriceWaterhouseCoopers have received national attention for providing the new benefit, small and medium-size companies are especially interested in it as a retention tool, he said. “If you are fortunate enough to get skills and the right cultural fit, you want to hold onto the person as long as you can,” said Kushner. He noted that retailers especially face a struggle. About 4 percent of employers have been offering student loan repayment help this year, according to a Society for Human Resource Management survey of employers. Americans have about $1.2 trillion in student loan debt and about half of those with loans have monthly payments that are excessive based on their incomes, according to a study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Academic research has shown the pressure of college loans is causing some millennials to delay marriage, children and home purchases. . .The company also is offering a tuition reimbursement program for some employees who pursue education while working and gives 30 college scholarships of $3,000 each to children of employees. Helping employees pursue education while on the job is not a new benefit. In contrast to the new perk aimed at new workers with student loans, the old programs were designed to increase skills of existing employees. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, tuition reimbursement programs for employees who go to undergraduate or master’s programs have been cut back in recent years. In 2012, 58 percent of employers were offering the benefit to employees going to graduate school. In 2016, that had dropped to 52 percent. For undergraduate tuition, 61 percent were giving benefits in 2012, but that had dropped to 55 percent in 2016. Tanya Mulvey, researcher for the human resources group, said that employers have been looking for ways to cut some benefit costs to make up for the extra cost of health insurance. The average tuition reimbursement per employee per year was $4,442 in 2016, she said. Companies offering tuition reiumbursements can receive a tax deduction.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161102/NEWS02/161109955/illinois-pension-woes-are-not-so-bad-after-all
(FROM THE ARTICLE: New Jersey became the state with the worst-funded public pension system in the U.S. in 2015, followed closely by Kentucky and Illinois. The Garden State had $135.7 billion less than it needs to cover all the benefits that have been promised, a $22.6 billion increase over the prior year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Illinois’s unfunded pension liabilities rose to $119.1 billion from $111.5 billion. The two were among states whose retirement systems slipped further behind as rock-bottom bond yields and lackluster stock-market gains caused investment returns to fall short of targets. The median state pension had 74.5 percent of assets needed to meet promised benefits, down from 75.6 percent the prior year. The decline followed two years of gains. The shortfall for states overall was $1.1 trillion in 2015.)
— Conspiracy theories abound – GREG HINZ
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20161102/BLOGS02/161109949/trump-rauner-madigan-conspiracy-theories-abound
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This being the election year of the conspiracy theory, allow me to let you in on a couple of the better ones floating around the Land of Lincoln. They’re not quite as provocative as tales about who’s really pulling FBI chief James Comey’s strings, or what Vladimir Putin promised Donald Trump. But anything that involves Bruce Rauner, Mike Madigan, zillions of TV ad dollars and hidden income tax returns reaches a certain level of interest. Story No. 1 concerns the big super PAC that state Sen. Dan Biss put together, the one no one had heard of until a couple of weeks ago, when it suddenly started spending big money—now $10 million or so—on ads tying Gov. Rauner to the GOP presidential nominee, who may be popular in some places but not in most of Illinois.)

NADIG NEWSPAPERS
— Election ‘environment’ portends GOP losses – RUSS STEWART  (DIERSEN: What class are you in? (1) the won’t haves; (2) the entitlement class; (3) the keep what I haves; (4) the haves; or the (5) the wealthy?)
http://nadignewspapers.com/2016/11/02/election-environment-portends-gop-losses/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Instead of having to plow through 1,500 words to ascertain this columnist’s Nov. 8 predictions, here is the list, in the first paragraph: Hillary Clinton, Tammy Duckworth, Susana Mendoza, Brad Schneider, a Democratic U.S. Senate majority, a narrow Republican U.S. House majority, Mike Madigan and a 68-50 House majority, Laura Murphy, a Cook County Democratic tsunami, and, in an oddity, Republican state Representative Mike McAuliffe. The biggest loser will be Bruce Rauner, and the biggest winner will be the status quo. On Nov. 9 the nationwide and Illinois political environment will be barely different from Nov. 8. Environment. In real estate, success in selling famously is determined by location, location, location. In politics, success in winning is determined by environment, environment, environment. The end of the 2016 election campaign is decidedly un-Trump, non-Trump and anti-Trump. Being a Democrat in a Democratic-friendly nation, state or district, is the ticket to victory. That was not always so. The campaign, which began in mid-2015, shaped up as an anti-status quo year. It is ending as a status quo year. There is so much wrong in America and with America — the economy, the political system, the criminal justice system, wealth allocation, the health care system, the education system and the country’s foreign policy. Should not the Obama-Clinton Administration be held accountable? It’s not. It’s all just sound and fury. Up until the 1990s the country was divided between the haves and the have nots. Now it’s schismed between (1) the won’t haves, essentially the Millennial generation, which has maximum debt and minimal job opportunities and which views income redistribution as the solution; (2) the entitlement class, which includes retirees and all those who receive some income from some government source; (3) the keep what I haves, primarily the working class, struggling to pay their bills and affected the most by crime, property taxes and neighborhood change; (4) the haves, those families earning more than $100,000, spending more than they make, worth maybe $1 million, and worried about the future; and (5) the wealthy, the infamous top 1 percent, whose net worth is $10 million and up. Of those demographic sectors, only two in 2016 sought to upset the status quo, the Millennials, who embraced Bernie Sanders’ socialism, and the working class, who embraced Donald Trump’s anti-elitist populism. Each was sending the message no more Clintonism, Obamaism, Bushism, elitism, insiderism and favoritism. Yet, on Nov. 8, all of those “isms” will triumph.)

HUFFINGTON POST
—  Illinois Opportunity Project Denies Sitting On People’s Ballot Applications  But state Democrats suspect a voter suppression effort. – Arthur Delaney
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/illinois-ballot-applications_us_581a1a26e4b08f9841aca2d3
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pat Hughes, the co-founder of the Illinois Opportunity Project, the conservative group that distributed the applications, said the criticism is bogus because the applications have, in fact, been submitted to the clerk. “It’s a red herring,” Hughes said. “It’s a pretext for harassment.” The Illinois attorney general’s office last week warned voters that if they filled out vote-by-mail ballot applications, they should “stay alert and monitor whether they then receive a ballot in the mail.” The office, which is headed by Lisa Madigan, a Democrat, sent several letters last month to the Illinois Opportunity Project demanding information about its vote-by-mail efforts in Rock Island and six other Illinois counties. Maura Possley, a spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office, said people were confused because the group’s vote-by-mail solicitation didn’t say who it was coming from. “Because the Illinois Opportunity Project’s mailings do not identify that organization and, instead, are sent from ‘[Name of County] County Vote By Mail Center’, they have led to voter confusion regarding whether they are official documents from the counties,” Possley said in an email. The Illinois Opportunity Project has ties to Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican. One of the group’s co-founders, the conservative radio host Dan Proft, also heads up a big-spending political action committee that is funded partly by Rauner. The governor is looking to chip away at Democrats’ supermajority in the state legislature. Madigan’s father, state Rep. Michael Madigan (D), has been speaker of the Illinois House for decades. The Illinois kerfuffle is one of several voting controversies, some more serious than others, unfolding in various states as Election Day nears.)

FED WEEK
— Pay Gap Little Changed at 34 Percent  (DIERSEN: Are you non-veteran, White, male, and/or older?  Are/were you accused of being overpaid? My critics/opponents have always accused me of being overpaid. In my defense, I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)
http://www.fedweek.com/fedweek/pay-gap-little-changed-34-percent/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The federal-private sector pay gap remains essentially unchanged from a year ago at 34.07 percent, the Federal Salary Council has reported. While that represents the official word, based on BLS data, it likely will have little to no impact on the prospects for the January 2017 federal employee raise, which will be 1.6 percent unless political leaders take up the raise issue. They have shown no sign of interest in doing so this year, similar to the pattern of the prior three years when the council also reported a pay gap in the 34-35 percent range but raises only in the 1-2 percent range were paid—also in each case by default when no figure was enacted. The 1.6 percent raise is to be paid as 1 percentage point across the board and the 0.6 percent divided as locality pay. The largest gaps, and thus the largest locality pay portions to be paid, were found to be in the San Francisco, Washington-Baltimore, New York, Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. However, even in those areas, the raise likely will be only in about the 1.8 percent range. The lowest-paid locality, meanwhile, is the catchall rest of U.S., which covers areas in the contiguous states outside one of the 44 city areas (Alaska and Hawaii are separate localities in their entirety) as well as U.S. territories and possessions. The raise in those areas likely will be around 1.4 percent; exact figures are to be set by a late-year executive order formalizing the raise. Locality rates are paid according to where employees work, not where they live, and reflect comparisons of labor market conditions, not cost of living.)
