(FROM THE ARTICLE: I think Jeanne Ives, or any of another five or six party luminaries, defeats Rauner in the primary on announcement.  His money will not matter. His flannel shirts will not attract. His commercials will persuade no one. He may attack Jeanne, the way he did Aaron and Dan. But for what? Goodness knows. Regardless, it will reduce his vote, not hers. Attacking a Wheaton mom who was among the first female West Point grads, a decorated logistics officer in the U.S. Army, who has earned her spurs in Springfield, worked with Democrats to pass important bills for all of us, and who has never strayed from her stated political beliefs in conservatism and rooting out Illinois corruption? The only campaign person who might recommend such a course probably led Mark Kirk’s re-elect effort. I know, Rauner bought the party. I do not think it matters. I know the State Central Committee is urged to hold the line. But, for what? For this? The party of Reagan? To this we have sunk? What have we delivered to the people – all of the people, from the South Side to Southern Illinois, from Western Illinois University to Northwestern – what have those folks gotten from Rauner and us that is worthy of us holding anything for him? Does any one of us believe that Rauner will get to the re-apportionment table? Or, if one thinks he will, on what basis might one think Rauner would deliver the best map possible for Illinoisans under those circumstances? Instead, for this all-encompassing task, Rauner’s petty personalization against Madigan has shown him uniquely unqualified. I thought Bruce Rauner was a fresh breeze. I thought he was technocrat who would save our finances. I did not expect a conservative, per se, but after his pitch to Jack Roeser, I was promised Bruce would never be a liberal. I got a whopping tax hike, Sanctuary State, Transgender Birth Certificates and taxpayer-funded abortion on demand through nine-months of pregnancy. What is so horrid about Rauner’s incumbency, and what is fatal to his cause, is that his screw-ups repel the reasonable voters, neither stridently “D,” nor “R,” who simply do not want to give everything to the Democrats in November 2018. These folks are the key to 2018. They are not partisans. They are our only path to the reapportionment conversation. I believe Rauner has irrevocably lost them for his serial incompetence. Rauner cannot be our future because of his past 32 months. Will Jeanne Ives, or Dan Cronin, or Peter Roskam, or David McSweeney, or Peter Breen or someone else get those voters? At this moment, I think each would beat Bruce on announcement, and each would qualify as a safe harbor for November voters who have had enough one-party domination. Maybe that is the slogan: “End One-Party Domination, Defeat Rauner.” Count me in. Now, who is the candidate?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE:  About three years ago to this day, I was asked by a supporter to meet with Bruce Rauner in the final stages of his campaign for Illinois governor. I agreed to the meeting, which took place at the Union League Club in Chicago. Family-Pac had not supported Rauner in the Primary, and Rauner had refused to clarify his positions on a host of issues important to all of us. He continued to say that he had no “social agenda.” My friend David Smith of the Illinois Family Institute (IFI) asked that I try to persuade Rauner to complete the IFI candidate questionnaire so that Christian voters across Illinois would be informed of his positions. At our meeting, Rauner said he would not fill out the questionnaire because his “consultants” told him he “had to get every question right to get the “endorsement.” I explained that IFI was a 501(c) (3) organization that did not “endorse” candidates and that no one was looking for “perfection” but only his honest attempt to state his views. Rauner said that he was not filling out any questionnaires (the position also stated by his campaign lieutenants) and that he wanted to keep Personal-Pac “neutralized.” I told him that Personal-Pac and Terry Cosgrove would be running TV spots against him. He seemed surprised. (Shortly thereafter, Personal-Pac TV ads against Rauner began.) This meeting exemplifies the series of lies by Bruce Rauner to Illinois pro-family voters and leaders. First, Rauner said to me that he was not completing any candidate questionnaires—yet this May, after Rauner stated his intention to veto HB 40 (taxpayer-funded abortion), Personal-Pac released a copy of Rauner’s “perfect” questionnaires in which he had pledged to sign taxpayer-funded abortion. In May, after promising Cardinal Cupich that he would veto HB 40, Rauner signed this dastardly bill, which will result in the deaths more than 12,000 innocent victims a year according to reliable estimates. In 50 years, I have never seen a politician as consistently dishonest on family issues as Bruce Rauner. Rauner has become a “cancer” on the Republican Party leadership, who should disassociate from him and declare the 2018 March Primary “open,” but they won’t…because they don’t have the courage to stand up for their “professed” beliefs and are indentured to his money. He was openly pro-abortion, pro-amnesty, and had padded the coffers of everyone from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to the Democrat National Committee. Even Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass, who made his name railing against the Combine, was riding the Rauner train.  In July 2013, he wrote this gushing column, “Illinois Republicans: Get ready for Bruce Rauner, multimillionaire businessman and possible candidate for governor could be just the ticket to take on the status quo, fix broken state.” I’m not kidding. That’s the title of Kass’ column. The equivalent of a sloppy wet journalistic kiss. You can’t pay for that kind of media…or can you? It was official: Bruce Rauner, the Combine millionaire was now Illinois’ newest savior. Today is a different story. In the wake of the political bloodbath of HB40, Rauner’s once merry band of conservative enablers are desperate to rewrite history. All of a sudden, they are pointing the finger at Rauner, calling him a liar, crying that they were “deceived.” This outrage is fake. Republicans who took millions of dollars from Rauner are the ones shrieking the loudest.  In the National Review, political operative Dan Proft lashes out at Rauner’s “radical-left social agenda.” Does that mean Dan will be giving Rauner his $5 million back? By claiming Rauner deceived them on abortion and illegal immigration, Rauner’s shills are lying to voters again. Shamelessly, they are also demanding voters support their hand-picked candidate against Rauner in the GOP primary. Why should anyone believe them after the destruction Rauner has wrought? Or is a ruse designed to help Rauner in this desperate but deep blue state? Suddenly even John Kass is anti-Rauner and he’s pushing his own candidate too. Rauner donated $510,000 to the ACLU in 2012, specifically to fund pro-abortion-related litigation. He named Obama’s former Chief of Staff Bill Daley to his transition team. Since elected, he has continued to fund Planned Parenthood with taxpayer-funded grants.  In 2016, Rauner also signed a bill forcing pro-life doctors and crisis pregnancy groups to promote abortion. He made Illinois a sanctuary state and the day after the bill passed the legislature, Republicans said nothing. Where was the outrage of my fellow conservatives then? Rauner isn’t the liar here. The hacks took his money are. They duped local GOP officials statewide and they duped the voters into supporting Rauner. We need to hold them accountable. I’m relieved local Republican leaders and voters finally know the sad truth about Bruce Rauner. Because Illinois cannot afford for history to repeat itself in 2018 and we cannot afford another Bruce Rauner. We really can’t.)

Bruce Rauner faces relentless criticism from members of his own party over his signing of a bill that expands the public funding of abortion, we were tipped to a curious event promoted on the Illinois Republican Party web site. The site listed an event in Decatur scheduled for this evening featuring David Barton, an Evangelical Christian speaker/author/activist, whom the Southern Law Poverty Center has described as “anti-gay and antigovernment.” Screenshot here. The Illinois Family Institute coordinated the event. Talk about moving from one extreme to the other. Was the state party, almost entirely funded by Rauner, taking a sharp right turn to try to balance out Rauner’s HB40 signature? When we posed the question to Republican Party spokesman Aaron DeGroot, the post was almost immediately pulled down from the site. “This event was posted in error and has been removed,” DeGroot said in an emailed response. “The party website’s calendar is a local party-driven, community calendar that contains events hosted by the Illinois Republican Party, Republican lawmakers, county Republican central committees, and other local Republican organizations. Events that do not fall under those categories do not belong on the calendar and will be removed.” DeGroot further explained: “Inclusion of an event on the ILGOP community calendar should not be interpreted as an endorsement from the state party of that event, organization, or those affiliated with the event. Rather, the calendar is meant to be a resource for local Republican organizations to be aware of Republican-affiliated events occurring in their areas.” More from the Southern Poverty Law Center: “A prolific propagandist, Barton has long promoted the canard that our Founding Fathers never intended the separation of church and state but rather sought to construct a Christian nation,” says a write-up of Barton by the Southern Law Poverty Center. “His Texas-based group, WallBuilders, sells an abundant bounty of books and DVDs pushing Barton’s fun-house vision of religious patriotism. And this distorted message has sold well.” So who posted it on the web site? We asked Illinois Family Institute’s David E. Smith. “Wait, really? It was on the Republican Party web site?” Smith chuckled over the phone. “It doesn’t surprise me that Central Illinois folks are kind of excited about that and maybe someone in web maintenance thought it would be a good event. But somebody didn’t get the memo — you don’t promote stuff from the Illinois Family Institute on the Republican Party website.” Smith said he views the party apparatus as “leftist” and called Republicans who embrace abortion rights “RINOs.” He further said Barton was invited as a historian and author to talk about Christian values. He took issue with a depiction of Barton as anti-gay. “We are Christians and so is David Barton. We believe every human being is made in the image of God … we do love our LGBTQ-I-A-whatever, neighbors. But we love them enough to tell them that this is not how God has designed you. We don’t deny there is such a thing as same-sex attraction. I do believe, however, that you can fight that. That you can overcome it. I do know a few ex-homosexuals.” Hoooo boy. And now we know why the post was taken down. However, one cached version of the GOP website from July shows the event, so it was up there for months. This all led to another question — how much independence can a state party that’s now divided have from Rauner, given that the governor is solidly in support of abortion rights — and that he has bankrolled the Illinois Republican Party? Will the party web site promote events opposing abortion? DeGroot: “The Illinois Republican Party will post pro-life events that are affiliated with an official Republican organization on our community calendar.”)

— OBITUARY: JAMES W. “JIM” RASINS  (DIERSEN: What were your connections with Jim Rasins?  DuPage County Auditor Bill Jacklin introduced me to Jim in 1986, and in 1990, Jacklin asked me to recommend Jim to be a Certified Fraud Examiner. During the mid-1990s, I recruited Jim to speak at an Association of Government Accountants Chicago Chapter meeting. We were fellow Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeemen. The Daily Herald reported that Jim attended a July 5, 2003 picnic the Prairie Path Park in my precinct that I had organized for the residents of my precinct and the residents of the precincts to the east and west. Attendees got to meet the five announced Republican candidates for U.S. Senate – John Cox, Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, and Jack Ryan. Cox brought Jays Potato Chips. Oberweis brought ice cream. The 200+ attendees included now Congressman Randy Hultgren. Jack Ryan won the primary, but withdrew. His replacement, Alan Keyes lost to Barack Obama. Jim served as the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) Treasurer 1998-2004. In 2004, stressing the need for MTRCC to develop and to follow budgets, I unsuccessfully ran to fill the MTRCC Treasurer vacancy.)

His hobbies included gardening, fishing, traveling, woodworking and spending as much time as possible with his five grandsons. — Reforms Allowing Agencies to Hire Faster Advance Through Senate Panel – Eric Katz (DIERSEN: GAO hired me in 1980 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. IRS hired me in 1971 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job.  The Post Office hired me in 1966 because it could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, or veteran who would take the job. Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)
