(FROM THE ARTICLE: Pollino is the owner and founder of My Half of the Sky, a new retailer in downtown Wheaton that sells goods made by people in the U.S. and around the world who have been trafficked, overcome addiction, are rising out of extreme poverty or have faced other adversities. Her items include candles made by teen moms in Chicago, necklaces crafted by people transitioning out of homelessness in Los Angeles, jewelry made by women saved from trafficking in China, and crocheted products from Africa and Peru. The shop is in an 1800s house at 121 W. Wesley St. It opened on Black Friday and will be open Saturday, Dec. 17, as well as Thursday and Friday, Dec. 22 and 23, for holiday shopping. It then will close for a build-out to add a small coffee shop, meeting spaces and a fitness area to the building before reopening at the end of February. “We’re creating this space for people just to hang out, get some work done and do things we love to do, and then the money goes back into the cause,” Pollino said. “(Retail is) a hard business to be successful in and if we just did the retail products, it would probably not pay the bills. That’s where the coffee and everything else comes into the picture.” In addition, a Kickstarter campaign has been launched to raise money for My Half of the Sky to rent a kitchen space where refugees and other local women in need will be employed and make food for the coffee shop. Pollino said she has been planning the business for more than five years, doing extensive research about best practices for social enterprise. “Wheaton is a great community to start an enterprise like this because they care about social justice, they really do,” she said. Pollino said people who have their lives turned around often come to a standstill because they are lacking the education or skills necessary to get a job.)

But our cash-compensation calculation of Flannell’s five-year contract reveals a total taxpayer cost estimate of $786,939. – ADAM ANDRZEJEWSKI  (DIERSEN: When will someone write an article about my Democrat GAO superiors?  In 1997, they succeeded in a) forcing me to stop paying into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) and b) forcing the CSRS to pay me $50,720 a year in today’s dollars.  So far, the CSRS has paid me $976,360 in today’s dollars.)
http://www.news-gazette.com/opinion/guest-commentary/2016-12-18/guest-commentary-what-gives-sullivan.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Earlier this spring, at OpenTheBooks.com, we identified more than 50,000 Illinois public employees who make at least $100,000 per year. These “highly compensated” public servants cost Illinois taxpayers over $8 billion. We found Cook County animal-control officers making $105,000; suburban school administrators at $503,000; university doctors earning $1.3 million; and 72 small-town ‘managers’ out-earning every governor of all 50 states. This research helps explain why Illinois has a net outward migration of residents. In order to pay these exorbitant salaries, Illinois has burdensome property taxes that are driving people out of the state. Illinois also has the double dippers — 15,000 “retired” public employees who go back to work in government and acquire a second pension. There’s former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar, who took $2.25 million in salary from the University of Illinois between 2000-2013 while also receiving more than $2 million in pension from a two-term stint as governor. Former state Rep. Roger Eddy now makes $322,200 — $291,725 as executive director of Illinois Association of School Boards and $30,500 from his lawmaker’s pension. Public pay and pension envy in Illinois is real. The hard-working private sector doesn’t have benefits even remotely close to government workers. Last month, tipped by an article in this newspaper, we found another “highly compensated” double dipper.)

CHRISTIAN TODAY
— 5 Surprising Truths About Nonchurchgoers – Czarina Ong  (DIERSEN: Virtually all of my nasty/disgusting/vicious critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes crow that they are a member of a church, crow that they attend church services, and crow that they give money to a church.  Should I write a book about them and their churches?  They paint themselves as being operatives or as dupes for their churches.  They harm their churches immensely.)
http://www.christiantoday.com/article/5.surprising.truths.about.nonchurchgoers/103090.htm
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What sets regular churchgoers and nonchurchgoers apart? Their differences aren’t all that stark, and they aren’t the antagonistic, argumentative bunch that some Christians peg them to be. “Because many church leaders and members have such misperceptions about them, churches often fail to reach them, or even attempt to reach them,” Thom Rainer, President and CEO of LifeWay Christian Resources, wrote on his website, referring to Christians who do not go to church. LifeWay Research conducted a study on 2,000 of these unchurched Christians in partnership with Billy Graham Center for Evangelism in Wheaton. The “unchurched,” as defined, are people who have not attended worship service in the past six months. Rainer and his team discovered five surprising truths about the unchurched. First, most of them have some church background. “Contrary to some perceptions, the great majority of unchurched have a church background. Almost two-thirds of them (62 percent) went to church regularly as a child,” he said. Next, most unchurched quit church because they got out of the habit of going to church. A number of them left the church for negative reasons, but majority simply quit because they felt like quitting. Third, one-third of the unchurched actually have plans to return to church in the future. Rainer said this is good enough reason for the church to actively invite them and get them interested. Fourth, the unchurched are actually very open to gospel conversation. “Nearly half (47 percent) would interact freely in such a conversation. Another third (31 percent) would listen actively without participating,” shared Rainer. He said it’s time that Christians stop using the “poor excuse” that the unchurched aren’t really interested in gospel conversations, because in reality, it is the church members themselves who are not interested in initiating gospel conversations. Lastly, Rainer said if Christians invite the unchurched to attend worship services, they will definitely come. “Among the unchurched, 55 percent said they would attend church if invited by a family member. And 51 percent said they would attend church if invited by a friend or neighbor. These numbers are staggering. The opportunities are incredible.” Rainer said this is an incredible opportunity that the church must take, wondering just how many will even seize this God-given moment.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/17/opinion/sunday/white-resentment-on-the-night-shift-at-walmart.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Much of it seemed to come from feeling they had been promised an easy path to the American dream, and had found only a dead end. They weren’t wrong. More than 90 percent of Americans born in 1940 earned more than their parents, but only 50 percent of those born in 1980 will, according to the Equality of Opportunity Project. And while the loss of wealth after the Great Recession was steepest for minority families, it was steep for whites, too. A report by the Social Science Research Council estimates that black families will have 40 percent less wealth by 2031 because of the Great Recession. It also estimates that white families will have 31 percent less. That is better. It is still bad. Nobody I worked with had the luxury of my aerial view. They had high school diplomas and uncertain futures, and no easy explanation for why the dream didn’t work out for them. If being white made life so much easier, the thinking seemed to go, why was it still so hard? The ready-made answers that are front and center in our culture — a rigged system, new workers taking jobs, corrupt politicians — are a big part of what put Donald J. Trump in office. At its ugliest, whites’ resentment is channeled along race lines, often toward groups that many white people believe compete against them for resources — or don’t deserve resources at all. Grappling with this idea of who deserves benefits is a longstanding, difficult conversation. But the anxiety over economic competition is easier to answer. Working-class whites aren’t losing out because other groups are taking limited resources. They, along with the minority workers who the Economic Policy Institute says constitute about 40 percent of the working class, are facing uncertainty because of structural economic change. That ranges from the decline of unions and manufacturing to the rise of an urban service economy. Collectively, this translates to lower wages for working people, while the fruits of economic growth accrue at the top.)

BLAZE
— Blue states that voted for Hillary Clinton share something in common: they’re dying – Sarah Lee  (DIERSEN: Did your precinct, your municipality, your township/ward, and/or your county vote for Clinton?  To what extent is it dying, for example, how long do homes and other buildings that are for sale languish on the market?  When homes and other buildings sell, for how much are they sold below the asking price?  How many homes and other buildings are rented out because they cannot be sold?  How many homes and other buildings are empty?  How many residents are on government assistance?)
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2016/12/17/blue-states-that-voted-for-hillary-clinton-share-something-in-common-theyre-dying/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Apparently the top 10 states that voted for Hillary Clinton over President-elect Donald Trump during the 2016 election have a very disturbing commonality: they’re dying. According to the Independent Journal Review, citing work by noted Washington Times columnist and economist Stephen Moore, those states are performing so poorly economically “people are clamoring to move out of them.” The states include Massachusetts, California, Maryland, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, Illinois and Hawaii. From IJR: According to economic expert Stephen Moore, writing in the Washington Times, the reasons Americans are fleeing these states are all driven by economics — namely, that they share the progressive values of “high taxes rates; high welfare benefits; heavy regulation; environmental extremism; high minimum wages.”)

DAILY HERALD
— FRONT PAGE: McMahon on the move? – Charles Keeshan and Susan Sarkauskas
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161216/news/161219190/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Could Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon be in line for a role in the Trump administration? McMahon’s name has been floated — along with that of DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin — as a possible choice for U.S. attorney from Chicago, should Republican leaders decide not to stick with the current officeholder, Zachary Fardon. When asked about it this week, McMahon quickly stressed that the position is filled. “I am honored to have my name attached to the U.S. attorney’s office. I have great respect for what they do,” he said, adding that he would welcome the opportunity to serve citizens across the state. “I respect (Fardon’s) role and the work he’s accomplished there.” McMahon’s profile has been on the rise in recent months. In August, he was sworn in as special prosecutor in the case of Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke, charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in Chicago. An appointment as U.S. attorney would place McMahon, or Berlin, among the most powerful government officials in Illinois, responsible not only for prosecuting cases involving gangs and white-collar criminals but also political corruption.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Facebook is now taking steps to limit the misinformation on its site. On Thursday, Mike Isaac reports, the company began a series of experiments to better identify, flag and reduce the prominence of false articles, as well as making ad changes to hurt the bottom lines of fake news purveyors. If the tests are successful, they will be rolled out to a bigger audience, the company said. The new measures include partnering with groups that can help fact-check articles. If an article is deemed fake, it will carry a “disputed” designation on Facebook. If people still want to share it, they will see a pop-up that reminds them that the veracity of the information is in question. In an interview, James Goldston, the president of ABC News, which is one of the groups that will be doing the fact-checking, explained how the partnership would work.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet now nearly complete, attention is turning to who will fill the roughly 4,000 other political posts in the next administration. That has elevated the role of Mr. Collins, the first member of Congress to endorse Mr. Trump for president. The New York Republican is the main congressional liaison between the House and Mr. Trump’s transition team, which is charged with staffing political jobs in the executive branch. For Mr. Collins, the role requires him to manage the evolving ambitions of a variety of House Republicans and their constituents. Befitting someone whose office boasts not one but two signs declaring “In God We Trust, All Others Bring Data,” he has turned to spreadsheets to organize the lists of lawmakers and others hoping to be considered by Mr. Trump’s team. A staff aide mans the spreadsheets, which can be sorted by lawmaker, position sought and other categories. “I cannot guarantee an interview; I certainly cannot guarantee you will get a job. http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/obamas-post-presidential-office-to-be-in-washington-d-c/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Barack Obama will open an office in Washington, D.C., after he leaves the White House on Jan. 20, and the Chicago-based Obama Foundation is considering opening a branch office here, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. “As a former president, President Obama will have office space in Washington, D.C., when he leaves office,” said Amy Brundage, an Obama spokeswoman, referring to the official office funded by taxpayers for former presidents. The federal government covers the costs of offices and a small staff for former presidents, plus a pension and other compensation for travel, an acknowledgement of the role — albeit not official — former presidents serve after they are no longer in office. For example, according to the General Services Administration, in FY2015, former President George W. Bush received $796,000 to cover health benefits, travel costs, office space, telephone costs, postage, printing costs, other services, supplies and materials, and equipment. “This was the highest amount of any former President for that year,” the Congressional Research Service noted in a March 2016 report covering the federal benefits provided to former presidents and their widows. As a former president, Obama will receive a $205,700 annual pension — and that’s after just eight years on the job. The pension is paid monthly with eligibility beginning at noon on Jan. 20, after President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office. Obama will get his pension check monthly. The Obama family is remaining in Washington after they move out of the White House, renting a home in the Kalorama neighborhood here. The family is staying in Washington until Sasha, 15, a sophomore at the private Sidwell Friends school here, graduates from high school. So while Obama and first lady Michelle are locating their Obama Center, a library and museum complex, in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, Obama’s taxpayer funded office, for now at least, will also remain in Washington. The Washington Post reported that Obama is renting space in a building owned by an environmental group, the World Wildlife Fund, at 1250 24th St. NW, not far from the Kalorama residence. Former presidents have no rules binding them when it comes to locating their taxpayer-funded offices. The General Services Administration is authorized to write rent checks for space anywhere in the U.S. The location does not have to be connected to the presidential library or foundation headquarters.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-chicago-bond-salesmen-20161209-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Arthur Main learned the hard way that Wall Street is a young person’s game. After a quarter-century at Morgan Stanley, Main — like countless old-school types who came of age in the ’80s — was kicked to the curb as banks turn to youth and technology in the face of tighter regulation and lower profits. And so, at 54, he’s working at one of the last stops in high finance: a small West Loop firm called TJM Institutional Services. He considers himself lucky. “Being my age is a hindrance for a lot of people,” says Main, keeping his eyes fixed on charts and chat boxes arrayed across his computer screens. “They don’t continue to learn, they don’t embrace technology, they try to fit that square peg in the round hole, and their skill set doesn’t apply anymore.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-poor-americans-death-stress-20161212-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Stress, I’ve long suspected, may explain why lifespans have been lengthening for high-income Americans but have remained the same or even shortened for low-income and middle-income people. A new analysis from the Hamilton Project released Monday adds important evidence: Biomarkers of stress have risen much more rapidly for low-income people than for high-income ones. The most recent national data show that life expectancy declined in 2015. Although these statistics are not broken down by income, it’s a good bet that the greatest declines were concentrated among lower- and middle-income people, because for decades gaps in life expectancy by income have been widening — as a National Academy of Sciences panel I co-chaired documented. Our panel was unable to explain why this has been happening, however. A sharper decline in smoking among high-income people is one partial explanation, but this and other identifiable factors can’t account for most of the growing longevity gap. And so I’ve come to suspect that the hidden factor is stress: As income inequality has increased, life has become substantially more stressful for low- and moderate-income families than it is for high-income families, and prolonged exposure to such stress is literally killing people.)

ABC7
— EX-CONGRESSMAN AARON SCHOCK SAYS GOVERNMENT WANTS TO SILENCE HIM – Chuck Goudie and Ross Weidner, Barb Markoff and Christine Tressel  (DIERSEN: Democrats run the federal government.  The federal government never sough a gag order against me in Diersen v. GAO (
https://gopillinois.com/documents/). Just the opposite.  The facts in the lawsuit show that the federal government discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.  The federal government wants potential and current federal employees to know that.  It is called Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion. The facts in the lawsuit help the federal government waste the careers of and get rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran. Therefore, the facts in the lawsuit help the federal government hire, retain, and promote those who are Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran. RINO elected officials and RINO party leaders stress that RINOs never came to my defense in Diersen v. GAO.  RINOs promote political affiliation discrimination (SEE: http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/13/us/seeking-return-to-ways-of-patronage-in-politics.html), RINOs promote reverse discrimination, RINOs promote age discrimination, and RINOs promote retaliation for complaining about the aforesaid.)
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/ex-congressman-aaron-schock-says-government-wants-to-silence-him/1648698/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Prosecutors have filed for a gag order against ex-congressman Aaron Schock in Springfield federal court. But as Schock and his lawyers prepare for Monday’s arraignment on corruption charges, they are first firing a free-speech shot charging that the government is illegally attempting to muzzle them from talking in public. Two years ago, from his Capitol Hill office, Congressman Aaron Schock, 35, was celebrating the First Noel. Now, he is fighting for the First Amendment. He was indicted on 24 corruption counts last month after a lengthy investigation. “After the government realized there was no crime, they chose to spend the next 19 months, using two grand juries and millions of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to manufacture a crime,” he said. Now the government has filed a motion for a gag order claiming the judge should “restrict extrajudicial statements that pose a serious and imminent threat to the fairness of a judicial proceeding.” The request for a gag order was aimed not only at Schock, but his attorneys, who said the government made up the case: “Those charges are the culmination of an effort to find something, anything, to pull down Aaron Schock,” George Terwilliger, Schock’s attorney, said. Schock will be arraigned Monday in Springfield on charges he misused government and campaign money, underwriting a lavish lifestyle including the now infamous redecoration of his Washington office to look like the “Downton Abbey” television show. Schock’s argument against the gag order, twice as long as the request itself, observes that “after months of lobbing outrageous accusations…the government comes before this court asking for a gag order to silence Mr. Schock and his attorneys.” They call it an “invasion of core, constitutionally-protected speech.” Targeting a former congressman who once thrived on self-generated publicity, social media depicting his world travels and encounters with the rich, the famous and both. Prosecutors, conceding that Schock is a public figure, said they are not trying to broadly limit his free speech and only want to block statements that might impugn the fairness of the criminal proceedings.)

http://www.nytimes.com/1996/03/13/us/seeking-return-to-ways-of-patronage-in-politics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So perhaps it is fitting that Republican politicians here are rising to the defense of political patronage. In 1990 the United States Supreme Court, ruling in a case brought by five frustrated job seekers against the Republican Party of Illinois, outlawed political favoritism in all government hiring except for policy-making posts, saying that only merit should count. This was a strange concept in Illinois, where the spoils system had always been rather the point of politics. This spring the issue is heading for the Court again in a different case, and Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, filed a brief last month asking the Justices to reverse its ban on government favoritism. He argues that patronage actually helps the democratic system. As another top Republican here, State Representative Lee Daniels, put it, patronage “doesn’t need to be a dirty word.” In response, civil libertarians say it is an embarrassment for the state to have political leaders arguing against meritocracy. “It seems only in Illinois,” said Harvey Grossman, the head of the American Civil Liberties Union office in Chicago, “would state officials be willing to publicly endorse the corrosive practice” of patronage. But Jeffrey Coleman, a lawyer for Governor Edgar, said it was simply logical for a political leader to prefer workers who are friends, rather than foes. “George Washington and Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson and every administration at the Federal and state level for 200 years used political consideration in hiring,” Mr. Coleman said. “And it seems rather ironic that nine men and women who were appointed to the Supreme Court for political reasons would say that politics should play no role in the selection of public employees.”)

— Will Democrats take Trump’s bait on federal workers?  Conservatives often win elections because of the hysterical, overblown reaction their common-sense plans receive from the left. – Christian Schneider  (DIERSEN: Anyone seeking a federal job should be warned that federal employees and federal retirees are viciously demonized, viciously denigrated, and viciously condemned.  I was a federal employee for almost 30 years and I have been a federal retiree for more than 19 years.)
http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2016/12/06/democrats-take-trumps-bait-federal-workers-christian-schneider/95016922/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: During the campaign, Trump promised a tightening of the federal government workforce; reportedly, his allies are working on plans to freeze hiring, end automatic raises, make it easier to fire incompetent workers, and convert federal retirement benefits to resemble more of a private sector, 401(k)-style plan. According to The Washington Post, Trump will likely seek counsel from Republican Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who famously angered public sector unions in 2011 when he ended mandatory union dues, required public employees to begin paying a portion of their health and retirement benefits, and all but eliminated collective bargaining for government employees.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Help Wanted at Google  The tech giant is looking for someone who can speak Republican. – Editorial (DIERSEN: Should I apply for this job?  Who in Illinois would my critics/opponents want to apply for this job?)
http://www.wsj.com/articles/help-wanted-at-google-1481070488
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The reality of a Donald Trump Presidency has been hard to process for much of Washington, but one example is especially notable. The good progressives at Google have announced they are looking for someone who can communicate with those strange humanlike life-forms: conservatives. Google recently posted a job opening (https://www.google.com/about/careers/search#!t=jo&jid=227695001&) in Washington for a manager of “Conservative Outreach and Public Policy Partnerships.” The employee “will act as Google’s liaison to conservative, libertarian and free market groups” and will be “part organizer, part advocate and part policy wonk.” Ideal candidates have eight years experience—and have attended at least one but no more than three Tea Party rallies. OK, we made that last one up. The company has been known to hire Republican politicos in the past, but Google will need greater political diversity soon. The company’s lobbyists, executives and other affiliates visited the Obama White House 427 times between 2009 and November 2015. The top lobbyist stopped by more than many of her counterparts in the industry combined. Google no doubt planned to continue wielding influence in a Hillary Clinton Administration. Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google’s parent company, advised John Podesta and Mrs. Clinton’s campaign on digital strategy and targeting voters, though perhaps not in the Upper Midwest. A report from the Campaign for Accountability turned up 57 people affiliated with both Mrs. Clinton (whether her campaign, foundation or State Department) and Google entities. Now Google will have to scramble to preserve its enormous influence on everything from copyrights to privacy regulation. Whether Mr. Trump will indulge rent-seeking from Google and friends is anyone’s guess. But maybe Google’s Republican unicorn can host a staff seminar on the free-market philosophy that made the tech giant possible.)

LUBLIN  (DIERSEN: They should hire Charles Bowsher.  During the 1980s and 1990s, Bowsher had great success in getting rid of GAO’s employees who were Republican, White, male, older, non-veteran, non-Ivy League, etc.)

SUBURBAN LIFE
— Wheaton officials voice concerns about proposed facility for new, expectant single mothers  Facility proposed for former Wheaton Inn – ERIC SCHELKOPF
http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2016/12/06/wheaton-officials-voice-concerns-about-proposed-facility-for-new-expectant-single-mothers/ah07kpi/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Greg Dose, attorney for the applicant, said the facility would not be considered a day-care facility and therefore would not have to be licensed by the state. “This is their own residence,” Dose said. “They are not taking their child to another location.” That drew concerns from councilwoman Suzanne Fitch, who said she thought the facility would provide child care so mothers could attend college classes. As proposed, they would have to be enrolled in college to participate in the program. Mayor Michael Gresk also voiced concerns about who would be watching the infants. “To the casual observer, it would appear that if you are going to have 8, 10, 12 kids and you are going to have mothers going to classes during the course of the day, somebody’s got to watch the infants and perhaps toddlers along the way also,” Gresk said. Dose said he thought some of the women would do the babysitting while others attended college classes, but he was not sure of the arrangement. Florczak-Seeman was not able to attend the Dec. 5 meeting. Councilman Thor Saline also noted that floor plans for the facility show only 10 beds, although the facility could serve as many as 12 women. “Did I miss something, or will the plans change?” he asked. In response, Dose said he wasn’t sure. This would be the company’s first facility, which will be called The Butterfly Garden…A Place for Healing and Transformation.)

— Black Activists Launch Monthly Fee System For Whites To Pay Blacks – Alex Pfeiffer
http://dailycaller.com/2016/12/05/black-activists-launch-monthly-fee-system-for-whites-to-pay-blacks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberal black activists have launched a monthly “subscription box” designed for white people “to not only financially support Black femme freedom fighters, but also complete measurable tasks in the fight against white supremacy.”  The subscription service is called Safety Pin Box and was launched last week. Wearing a safety pin has recently become a symbol within the liberal community for one to show solidarity with minorities. The group is headed by Leslie Mac and Marissa Jenae Johnson. Johnson is one of the Black Lives Matter protesters who interrupted Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders during a speech in Seattle last year. There are four different types of subscriptions offered by the group. The “e-ally box” is $25 a month and is “an electronic form of solidarity.” It comes with “exclusive ‘calls to action’ when urgent ally services are needed in times of crisis.” Ally is a term used by Black Lives Matter activists to describe white comrades.)
