(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to her website, a possible motivation for the shooting could have been tied to her many YouTube accounts, which she says have seen a decline in viewership over the past few months. She embedded videos from the biggest YouTubers on the platform on the site, including massive creator Casey Neistat. In them, they talk about the YouTube “Ad-apocalypse” where many users are seeing massive dips in traffic, subscriber count loss, and de-monetization of videos. Neistat has more than 9,000,000 subscribers and made a famous video about the YouTube ad revenue scare for creators. It appears that Aghdam was disgruntled by the changes in the YouTube platform. She wrote on her website, “Be aware! Dictatorship exists in all countries but with different tactics! They only care for personal and short-term profits and do anything to reach their goals even by fooling simple-minded people, hiding the truth, manipulating science and everything, putting public mental and physical health at risk, abusing non-human animals, polluting the environment, destroying family values, promoting materialism and sexual degeneration in the name of freedom and turning people into programmed robots!” She goes on to quote Adolf Hitler saying, “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it and eventually they will believe it.” The rest of her message targets YouTube and censorship. “There is no free speech in the real world and you will be suppressed for telling the truth that is not supported by the system. Videos of targeted users are filtered and merely relegated so that people can hardly see their videos.” Aghdam’s website shows screenshots of her “reduced” and “supressed” videos. She referred to a specific video that appeared to be an instructional video for a workout saying, “This video got age-restricted after new, close-minded YouTube employees got control of my farsi YouTube channel last year, 2016, and began filtering my videos to reduce views and suppress and discourage me from making my videos!” Feb. 20, YouTube enacted a new advertising policy that demonetized channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time. Though Aghdam’s main English channel had more than 5,000 subscribers, many of her videos appeared to be demonetized.)

Two Democratic lawmakers – State Senator Heather Steans and State Representative Anna Moeller – are the sponsors of SB 3249 and HB 5596 respectively. The bills also “require every public elementary school and high school to include in its curriculum a unit of instruction studying the significant role of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in society.” Higgins warns parents that those who live outside of Illinois shouldn’t brush aside this information, believing it will not affect them. “This will come to other states,” she warns. “It started in California; now it’s coming to Illinois. All it takes is a couple of homosexuals and/or leftists in your state legislature to bring this bill and it will be in your schools, too.” And the danger in that, according to Stella Morabito at The Federalist, is that the highly politicized nature of public schools will essentially “draw virtual targets” on the backs of students whose beliefs don’t align with the school’s. “A bully [would be] free to target with the taunt ‘bigot’ any child who comes from a traditional Christian home – and the curricula will back them up,” Morabito writes. Higgins is convinced that should the legislation pass, Republican Governor Bruce Rauner would sign it into law. It would become effective July 1, 2019. She recommends a two-fold approach to parents at this time: fight the bills – but at the same time “plan an escape route for your children from government schools.”)

We are home to large groups of immigrant communities, and we fully embrace the diverse cultures of our immigrant population. Our concern is about criminal illegal aliens who are falling through the cracks because our sheriff can’t talk to federal immigration agents. On March 27 I introduced a resolution to condemn the state sanctuary law and to direct county counsel to take legal action. Every Orange County supervisor present voted in favor. We currently are reviewing the best ways in which to intervene in the federal government’s lawsuit against California. States cannot simply opt out of federal laws they don’t like. If tomorrow California decided that the First Amendment was a nuisance and passed legislation to restrict this constitutional right, Americans wouldn’t accept the new law. I came to this country with a great respect for the freedom and safety that the Constitution affords its citizens. Condemning the sanctuary law has nothing to do with race or politics. It’s about protecting Americans and their constitutional rights. A budget-related document notes that until the MSPB board has a quorum—it has lacked one for more than a year although nominees for the two vacant seats recently were named—it cannot issue the kind of studies it conducts regularly into federal personnel issues. Of my precinct’s 504 registered voters, according to the DuPage County Election Commission (DCEC), 105 (21%) cast Republican Ballots, 98 (19%) cast Democrat ballots, and 301 (60%) did not vote. Beyond outrageously, beyond unacceptably, in 2015, the DCEC let my critics/opponents unethically gerrymander my precinct to punish me and Jeanne Ives. The DCEC let my critics/opponents a) take away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and b) give me about 100 residences out Ives’ precinct to the east. The DCEC let my critics/opponents draw Ives into my precinct. But then, my critics/opponents drew her out of my new precinct and into Precinct 65 because she asked them to.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: Oh, DuPage County, have you forgotten who you are? Generations of Chicagoans fled to you, DuPage, to escape the political corruption of the big bad city. In Chicago, the rule of thumb was to “vote early and often.” In DuPage, a single honorable vote, almost always for a Republican, sufficed. In Chicago, the quiet residents of cemeteries voted. In DuPage, only the living, if sometimes barely. In Chicago, vote returns from the “river wards” could be held up for hours, allowing for a little late-night skullduggery to put a Machine favorite in a tight race over the top. In DuPage, goodness no. But on Tuesday in DuPage, the election process looked about as squared away as in Chicago circa 1947. Final voting results were not released until roughly eight hours after the polls closed, about 3 a.m. A skeptic might wonder if everything was on the up and up. We’re told it was a hardware problem. Elections judges were unable to get results from scanning machines, which are used to read paper ballots, and the judges had to lug 268 of the machines to the election commission office in Wheaton to tally the results. Now, on Tuesday, election officials will be on the hot seat. The DuPage County Board has asked them to attend a board meeting to explain what went wrong and how to fix it. “I promise you, there’s going to be changes,” County Board President Dan Cronin told the Daily Herald. “I am not done with this.” But there’s little mystery about what should be done — it was right on the ballot. An advisory referendum question asked voters whether the DuPage County Election Commission should be dissolved and its responsibilities taken over by the office of the county clerk. Fifty-six percent of the voters said that was a good idea. After Tuesday’s show of incompetence by the election commission, you can bet that even more voters now would say that’s a good idea. Cronin, who has been a leader in Illinois in trying to eliminate unnecessary units of government, is pushing the merger, which he says would make the election process more accountable and save DuPage taxpayers $300,000 a year. But the change requires a change in state law, and the Legislature has been slow to go along. Why? Because the Legislature is always slow to go along when it comes to eliminating unnecessary units of government. It’s about jobs and political turf. For the same reason, the Legislature has been insufficiently aggressive in eliminating township governments. Cronin is right. The DuPage Election Commission bungled it badly on Tuesday. And we were feeling the ghosts of those old Chicago ward heelers.)

She ran on a conservative social platform and since has been accused by her unsuccessful primary opponent of softening her position on conservative ideas to comport with the governor’s socially centrist agenda. Harold’s stance against same-sex marriage has served as a flashpoint in her primary bid. According to the book “Being Miss America: Behind the Rhinestone Curtain” by former Miss America Kate Shindle, Harold’s “ultra-conservative views” had kept her from winning the Miss Illinois pageant for several years. Shindle writes that Harold was asked in a pageant interview about adoption by same-sex couples. “Harold reportedly stated that she would choose to place a child in an abusive heterosexual home rather than with a loving gay couple,” the book says. Harold said she did not remember that exchange, saying she supports same-sex adoption and foster parenting, and “if I said what they alleged, it’s absolutely wrong.”)

Randy Hultgren has fired a top aide after the staffer was found in a car last fall with a 17-year-old boy and no shirt on, according to multiple sources and a police report. Nick Provenzano, 56, was dismissed by Hultgren over the weekend, the sources said. Hultgren’s office declined to comment on the details of Provenzano’s firing. “Nick Provenzano is no longer with the office,” said a Hultgren spokesperson. The Hultgren spokesperson said the office only find out about the incident “late Wednesday and immediately placed him on leave before his eventual termination.” But through a Freedom of Information Act request, POLITICO obtained an Oct. 21, 2017, incident report from the city of McHenry Police Department in Illinois. That report shows police investigated Provenzano for public indecency and other potential criminal acts following the episode, but no charges were ever filed. The name of the teenager is redacted in the report. The report states that a homeowner became suspicious when she saw two men sitting in an SUV on a dead-end street with the lights off and called the police. After a police officer arrived, he approached the car and saw that Provenzano had no shirt on, although the other passenger was fully clothed. When Provenzano was questioned by the police about why he had removed his shirt, he said it was “hot.” Provenzano told the officer the two were “hanging out” and “talking about life.” Provenzano later told the officer that he “did not want to admit to anything, but stated that contact between him and [the teenager] was consensual in nature, that nobody was forced or coerced each other to engage in any acts they did not want to, and that he believed [the teenager] was eighteen (18) years old.” The teenager later told police he had met Provenzano on the gay dating site Grindr. The teenager said he was only 17, but the website changed his age to 18. The teenager said police interrupted them during the middle of their sexual encounter, according to the partially redacted report. Provenzano had removed most of his clothes at one point, the report states. After questioning by police, Provenzano was released without charges. He later hired a lawyer to respond to police inquiries, but Provenzano refused to be interviewed again. State prosecutors decided no criminal case would be filed against him. Provenzano was hired as Hultgren’s deputy district director in August 2016. Provenzano had earlier served as Hultgren’s field director during the 2012 and 2014 campaigns. Provenzano is a graduate of DeVry University with “training in electronics, computer technology and business management,” according to his candidate bio. He was paid more than $80,000 as Hultgren’s deputy district director last year, according to House disbursement records. He also earned another $28,000-plus from Hultgren’s reelection committee during 2017, according to records on file with the Federal Election Commission. Provenzano served as a McHenry County board member for 13 years. He was also the campaign manager for former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) in 2010, according to his LinkedIn biography. Hultgren was first elected to the House in 2010. He was once an aide to former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), who went to federal prison over secret payments to a man he allegedly sexually abused as a teenager. Hultgren, a lawyer, served in the Illinois Legislature for a dozen years before he was elected to Congress.)

Jeanne Ives explains to voters why she’s challenging Gov. Bruce Rauner in the primary election, she cites the honor code of her West Point alma mater: “I will not lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those that do.” The governor, Ives contends, lied to her and other social conservatives in 2014 when he said he had no social agenda, and she points to his signature on a law to expand abortion rights. At the same time, however, the Wheaton legislator has embraced Trump and urges what she calls the “silent majority” that elected him to rise up against Rauner. Trump’s lies in office are well chronicled — just Wednesday, he boasted that he made up facts on trade during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump also has a history of cheating, including his affair with actress Marla Maples that broke up his first marriage, and the current fallout from $130,000 paid by his lawyer to a porn star who goes by the name Stormy Daniels as “hush money” about an alleged affair. How does Ives reconcile campaigning on an honor code that prohibits lying and cheating as a rationale to take on Rauner, while not only tolerating but actively promoting Trump? Asked that question recently, Ives paused for several seconds. “For me, it’s a personal affront to what Gov. Rauner has done because I’m part of that Republican caucus he lied to, OK?” she said. “So, it’s a very personal thing. That’s the thing. I can affect him (Rauner) and the outcome of this election. I can’t necessarily affect Donald Trump.” . . . “These two primary races at the governor’s level are pretty good examples of this issue of differentiation. Jeanne Ives has been very clear and very pointed about differentiating herself from Rauner in very specific ways,” he said. “Whereas the Democrats have to say, ‘Well, I’ve got this slightly different take on (things).’ Nuances are a problem.” With Ives, there’s not much nuance to her support for the president. “I think we should have a working relationship with (Trump),” she said after a recent gathering of the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents at Water Tower Place. “And look, I’ve been disappointed by a lot of other politicians who have lied about what their intentions are, have done the wrong thing. But you still work with them. You still work with them,” she said. “But in the case of Rauner, I can actually affect change where he has personally lied about his policies.” Ives has supported Trump attacks on sanctuary cities and illegal immigration while criticizing Rauner’s approval of legislation that would prevent local law enforcement from holding someone based solely on their legal status or detaining someone without a judicially issued warrant. Ives’ challenge means Rauner’s attempts to distance himself from Trump have become a factor for the governor ahead of the primary, Mooney said. “Rauner’s spent his time ignoring (Trump), (the president) is sort of a pariah in the state, and that’s annoyed the Trump supporters in the state, and then Jeanne Ives comes along,” Mooney said. “If she wouldn’t have been there, raising (Rauner’s) ambiguity about Trump and all of that, in the fall, the Democrat, whoever it would be, would definitely hammer him on Trump, associate him with Trump,” he added. “But without Ives putting out these sort of RINO (Republican In Name Only) criticisms and so forth, those (Trump) people might have just gone ahead and would vote for (Rauner).” Trump presents a problem for a Republican governor running in a Democratic-leaning state. For nearly two years, Rauner routinely has avoided using the president’s name in public, and he skipped the 2016 GOP convention that nominated Trump. Asked by reporters about Trump-proposed policies on immigration, health care and other issues and Rauner regularly demurs — at one point saying he had “no obligation” to discuss “every policy change in Washington.” Instead, Rauner has focused his primary campaign on his frequent political target, veteran Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, going so far as to try to link Madigan to Ives despite vast ideological differences between the Democratic leader and the GOP challenger. The assertion rated a “Pants on Fire” from PolitiFact Illinois. The election, Rauner told reporters, is “about the people against a corrupt, broken system. It’s about the people of Illinois demanding more value for their taxes and a lower tax burden, the people of Illinois demanding more jobs, more economic opportunity and the people of Illinois demanding an end to the corruption in our system by getting term limits.” The governor said his campaign message is one of “unification” that transcends party labels. But Rauner has had difficulty finding a base. His approval of legislation expanding taxpayer-funded abortions to women covered by Medicaid and state employee health insurance motivated Ives to challenge him. GOP conservatives viewed Rauner’s move as a betrayal after he had vowed to veto the bill. On the other hand, Rauner’s support of the measure could help him if he makes it to the November general election, winning favor with GOP-leaning moderate suburban women, a critical demographic in an evolving collar county landscape. Rauner followed that up, however, with his Tuesday veto of legislation that would have required the state licensing of gun shops. That’s legislation those same suburban women, many of them mothers of school-age children, would support. Before then, however, Rauner has to win the primary election, and he knows the voting power of Downstate gun-rights supporters. David Yepsen, the former head of the Paul Simon Public Policy Center at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, said the Trump impact in the primaries may only be just the beginning heading toward the outcomes of the November general election. “There is a Trump effect, and it can be a harmful one to Republican chances in Illinois in November. There is a Democrat wave starting to form, and it manifests itself in the energy you see in these groups, the turnouts in primaries in other states,” said Yepsen, a former national columnist for The Des Moines Register. “It’s history. Five Naperville precincts were identified as having some of the lowest voter turnout in terms of the number of registered voters, so students went door to door in those precincts to encourage people to vote. Students returned with feedback from residents, some of it positive, and some of it negative. Sherer said the bill was about giving more rights back to local control. “I agree with that too; however you have issues here because once you leave it open to interpretation by the school district then you are absolutely opening it up for discrimination, because they forced someone to get a physical or they declined them because they felt like they were not physically fit enough for the position,” Ives said. “Then you put them (school districts) in a conundrum, you see.” Next comes workers’ compensation problems, Ive said, noting if a substitute gets injured doing an exercise they are not up for, the school district could become liable; however, Scherer said it is “about local control and it is as simple as that.” After Ives voted no and left the meeting, Rep. Robert Pritchard (R-Hinckley) sought clarification on the bill, asking if Sherer was looking to temporarily waive the licensing in an effort to get needed teachers sooner and was told no; he then asked if the “teachers association and management alliance” approved the bill. “There are no opponents,” Sherer said. Rep. David Olsen (R-Downers Grove) said he was confused. “Maybe I am the only confused one whether it is evidence of physical fitness or a physical where I go to my doctor and I get a physical,” Olsen said. Sherer said it is not about how many sit-ups a substitute can perform or times they can run around the block, it is a money issue, alleviating the ancillary educator from coming up with even more funds than necessary to be certified. “I respect the concerns Rep. Ives had about workers’ comp and such, but you are correct we do have a teacher shortage and I think we need to take some steps to address that shortage,” Olsen said. Rep. John Cavaletto (R-Salem) shared Ives’ apprehension. “I really don’t like that,” Cavaletto, adding though he understands the shortage, that should not be a reason to exclude some substitutes from mandates teachers themselves are required to follow. He then asked about the cost of a physical, which Sherer said could cost up to $400, but physical or not a substitute would have to be free of communicable disease. “How many of those are there I wonder,” Cavaletto said. Though he was not thrilled with the bill, Cavaletto said he would support the bill due to the teacher shortage. The panel approved HB4706 and the bill moved to the House floor.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The bill has bigger drawbacks. Any law to protect journalists as a special class needs to define who is a journalist, and this leaves an opening for the government to start making judgement calls about who is not a journalist. While the definition adopted in the bill is fairly broad, and would encompass freelancers and all kinds of media, there are still concerns about defining who is and who is not a reporter. This is especially true because 31 of the 44 attacks documented on the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker occurred during protests. As more livestreamers and citizen journalists show up at protests, it can be tricky, even for press freedom groups, to determine who to count as a journalist. The government is often far more conservative. In December, federal prosecutors tried photojournalist and livestreamer Alexei Wood on chargers of riot, conspiracy, and destruction of property. Even though Wood’s video footage from the day shows that he took no part in any vandalism, the prosecution tried to make the entire case about whether he was a journalist or not. The definitional issue exists with other legislation to protect reporters. A shield bill, for instance, would also require the government to define journalists. This was one of the major areas of debate in 2013 when there was serious energy to put in place a bill protecting journalists from federal subpoenas that would require them to divulge their sources. In the end legislation is always about weighing the costs versus the benefits. In the context of an attorney general who claims to have 27 open leak investigations and wants to make it easier to subpoena reporters, a shield law would at least have immediate concrete benefits to weigh against potential drawbacks. The Journalist Protection Act is an effort in the right direction, and there is an argument that it could serve as a useful global model. The diagnosis of increased hostility bleeding into physical threats is spot on, given what we’ve seen in the data. However, Swalwell’s proposed legislation would not offer journalists any material benefit, even as it would allow the federal government to define who is and who is not a journalist. In the current climate, that may not be a worthwhile tradeoff.)
