(FROM THE ARTICLE: About eight years after the financial crisis, the turmoil that began on Wall Street and then drifted into companies of all types has left the ranks of the unemployed and underemployed heavy with people who once enjoyed senior financial positions in a variety of industries. They face a sharply reduced market for the types of jobs they used to take for granted. Rosengard stated adamantly: “Banking is not a stable position.” Since the crash, she’s had well-paying short-term consulting positions and poor-paying temp work, but nothing like the security she used to have. Now, as she continues her search, “It’s like a twilight zone. You are either offered a position that has good pay, but a position way below your capabilities, or you are offered a top position with no pay.” Rosengard isn’t alone. She’s beginning to attend meetings of the Financial Executives Networking Group, or FENG, that are filled with people who’ve gone to premier MBA programs, guided companies through multimillion-dollar decisions, had titles like chief financial officer, treasurer and vice president of finance, and generally excelled at what they’ve done. At a recent downtown Chicago event in an Addison Group boardroom, Rosengard and 31 others exchanged job leads with one another and listened to a motivational speaker. “You aren’t getting recognized for your skills,” said the speaker, Conor Cunneen. “I know it’s a pain in the butt when you know you can do the job with your eyes closed, and they are going to give it to someone new at it, taking half the salary.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there has been almost no recovery in the number of financial positions in Illinois since the financial crisis set off thousands of layoffs. During summer 2006, as the economy seemed strong and few worried about jobs, financial positions peaked at 335,100 in Illinois. But by March 2011, only 283,000 remained, and by June this year the numbers had improved only slightly to 295,200. Nationally, many of the 718,000 financial jobs that disappeared have returned, but commercial banking is still short more than 58,000 jobs. Positions in leasing and rental equipment are down 93,200. “Whatever the government says, the recession continues,” said Matt Bud, national chairman of FENG, which holds sessions like the Chicago meetup in cities throughout the country. About 50,000 out-of-work or underemployed executives are members nationwide.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: College students whose majors don’t turn out as they envision will be able to walk away from their loan debt simply by claiming their schools bamboozled them, as allowed under a new rule. Proposed by the Department of Education, published in June in the Federal Register and scheduled for approval on Nov. 1, the rule will allow students to “discharge” their federal student loan obligation if they can show — and rather broadly — that they were hoodwinked by a university’s “misrepresentation.” This easy out would leave taxpayers and colleges on the hook for between $2 billion and $43 billion over the next 10 years, according to a federal estimate. And what could be easier than for the lame-duck administration, in its 11th-hour regulatory push, to ship off this sour tart and simply walk away? For starters, the rule is entirely unnecessary. An existing provision allows students to sue for loan forgiveness in cases of intentional fraud or in other violations of law. What’s proposed is preposterously unspecific, leaving schools with little recourse. It’s akin to allowing mortgage holders to dump their loans because they picked the wrong neighborhood in which to reside. In the end, this latest get-out-of-debt free nonsense helps no one. It simply abrogates personal responsibility. And unfortunately for young people sucked into these liberal escapades, life is not so forgiving.)

Sandack would not talk by phone. SO … why are so many people having trouble believing him? Here’s a few reasons we want to hear more (anything?) from Republican leaders today: 1. Something seems off with the equation. (High-profile statehouse Republican) + (close to most powerful Republicans in state) + (social media accounts hacked into) = immediately resigns? 2. Crickets. The governor, Illinois House Republicans, others in leadership, said a big nada on Sunday at the news of the loss of a top lieutenant. No statements released by leaders. No response from a governor’s spokeswoman when asked for reaction late Sunday. No answer from several Republican party and legislative leaders (with the exception of House Republican forwarding a copy of Sandack’s statement.) That won’t hold today though. 3. Timing. Sandack took down his own social media accounts last week, which prompted all kinds of speculation. He said on Sunday the cyber hacking/harassment started around July 4. He resigned days after taking down his accounts. In the midst of this, Sandack says he experiences a moment of clarity, realizing he doesn’t want to miss any more of his kids’ events. What was missing from the CapFax piece was any description as to what actually happened on these fake accounts. Had they actually posted content pretending to be Sandack? Were they threatening? Embarrassing? The piece said Sandack filed a police report. Beside Sandack, the other person quoted in the CapFax writeup was a recent Rauner appointee, John Bambenek, who talked about how unusual and dangerous it was to have such an open attack against a public official. He also talked about the difficulty of prosecuting computer crimes.
