(FROM THE ARTICLE: The owner of a chain of Illinois news outlets — including this one — answered critics and defended the right of conservatives to have a voice in the largely blue state during a recent broadcast of a Chicago-based radio talk show that he co-hosts. “I’m the first newspaper publisher in, apparently, modern times who has a point of view,” Dan Proft, co-host of Illinois Rising, said. “And that is a problem, such a problem, that I’m a brazen propagandist engaged in mock journalism, according to Eric Zorn. I’m also something of a political operative, though Mr. Miner over at the Reader imagines I’d prefer a loftier description.” There’s a far more serious motive behind the name calling, Proft’s Illinois Rising co-host, Pat Hughes, said during the same broadcast. “Look at the irony,” Hughes said. “Eric Zorn is commenting on your newspaper from a newspaper. He’s making political commentary. And the fact that there’s other opinion leaders out there that can get out to readers in a way that’s more efficient, in a way that they’re interested in consuming the news, is a threat not just to their model economically but to the monopoly that they feel they have on thought. And from Zorn’s perspective — and I suspect Miner’s perspective — from left-leaning, liberal orthodoxy.” Proft, co-founder with Hughes of the Illinois Opportunity Project, is Liberty Principles PAC chairperson and treasurer, as well as a senior fellow at the Chicago-based conservative think tank Illinois Policy Institute. Illinois Rising is a presentation of the Illinois Policy Institute. Proft is a principal of Local Government Information Services, which owns this publication. Proft and Hughes were responding to a March 23 op-ed article in the Chicago Tribune in which Zorn referred to Proft’s Illinois news outlets as “mock journalism.” Zorn’s column was published a week before a similarly themed piece in the Chicago Reader by Michael Miner titled, “If your community news is slanted, Dan Proft may be to blame.” Zorn’s column wasn’t the first time the Tribune writer has targeted Proft. In July 2009, a few weeks after Proft announced his ultimately failed bid for the Republican nomination in the governor’s race, Zorn used his column to call Proft a “seethingly eloquent conservative attack dog.” The Tribune has allowed Proft space in its columns to voice his views as well. On July 11, 2016, it published Proft’s op-ed piece, “How to (really) achieve the ‘important conversation,’ ” about the sniper attack in Dallas a few days earlier that killed five police officers. Proft criticized the mainstream news media’s coverage of the incident, as well as other incidents in which police officers have been shot by black men, and urged less-biased, more-objective coverage. “There is plenty of intellectual room between ‘cops can do no wrong’ and ‘cops are all racists waging war against minorities,’ ” Proft wrote. “The reasoned room in between is occupied by most of the Americans who are not on television, radio or Twitter.” Proft cited the apparent hypocrisy of critics dismissing his news outlets as not being objective while their own work is published by companies with far less transparent political biases. “I’m transparent about my point of view,” Proft said. “That certainly informs the stories that we select to cover and the way that we cover them. And that’s the case for everybody in journalism. I hate to break it to those who think there’s this superhuman race of journalists who have no point of view. Every human being has a point of view, and it influences how they do their jobs. So, if we could just start from that agreed upon point, then maybe we could get somewhere. But they have an agenda.”)

Howland says she’s definitely in the contest and points to the name recognition she built up in her prior race. DCCC isn’t tipping its hand, other than saying that the 6th is on its short list of national targets for next year. Says a spokeswoman, “There’s no question that Rep. Peter Roskam is out of step with Illinois voters. We fully expect to have a strong recruit in the sixth district and it’s why we’ve made an unprecedented investment in the region by investing in a full-time, local organizer to harness the grassroots energy we’re seeing on the ground.” To emphasize the point, the DuPage County Democratic Organization says it’s expecting quite a turnout for its annual dinner on April, with at least three Democratic candidates for governor expected to attend: Chris Kennedy, Ameya Pawar and J.B. Pritzker. Robert Peickert, chair of the DuPage County Democratic Organization, says he hopes to build on momentum from the fall, when the party increased from 1 to 18 the number of township slots it holds in the county. However, the other 54 township positions are held by Republicans, and Roskam says he’s not sweating. “DCCC is not unknown to me. I saw them in ’06 and ’08,” he told me in a phone call. While Hillary Clinton may have out-polled Trump in the district in November, “I did better than John McCain (when he was the GOP presidential nominee) and outdid Obama in Obama’s big year (2008,) says Roskam. “I know the district and the playbook.” It looks like 2018 could be interesting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A mystery website, realgopillinois.com, is billing itself as “the official news site for real Republicans.” But welcome to campaign season, where things are not always as they seem. The site is professional-looking, with items presented as news stories and a solicitation for tips. AARON DeGROOT, a spokesman for the state GOP, said the site has no connection to the party and he has “no idea who these folks are.” Its creators aren’t making it easy to find out, either. A computer expert at my newspaper tells me there’s no easy way to track the origin of the site because its domain was registered anonymously. An address listed at the bottom of the group’s email is in Champaign, but turned out to be a UPS store. An employee there said they do rent mailboxes. The group name doesn’t turn up in the Illinois State Board of Elections, but it appears to have started a Facebook page recently. I emailed to find out more. The response came with no name attached. “We are just a group of everyday citizens who are upset with the Democrat Party and how they’ve ruined this state,” the response stated. “We are also upset with the Illinois GOP and Gov. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Google will expand the use of “fact check” tags in its search results — the tech industry’s latest effort to combat false and misleading news stories. People who search for a topic in Google’s main search engine or the Google News section will see a conclusion such as “mostly true” or “false” next to stories that have been fact checked. Google has been working with more than 100 news organizations and fact-checking groups , including The Associated Press, the BBC and NPR. Their conclusions will appear in search results as long as they meet certain formatting criteria for automation. Google said only a few of those organizations, including PolitiFact and Snopes.com, have already met those requirements; The Washington Post also says it complies. Google said it expects the ranks of compliant organizations to grow following Friday’s announcement. Not all news stories will be fact checked. Multiple organizations may reach different conclusions; Google will show those separately. Still unanswered is whether these fact-check analyses will sway people who are already prone to believe false reports because they confirm preconceived notions. Glenn Kessler, who writes “The Fact Checker” column at The Washington Post, said in an email that Google’s efforts should at least “make it easier for people around the world to obtain information that counters the spin by politicians and political advocacy groups, as well as purveyors of ‘fake news.'” He added that “over time, I expect that people increasingly will want to read a fact-check on a controversial issue or statement, even if the report conflicts with their political leanings.” Google started offering fact check tags in the U.S. and the U.K. in October and expanded the program to a handful of other countries in the subsequent months. Now the program is open to the rest of the world and to all languages. False news and misinformation, often masquerading as trustworthy news that spreads on social media, has gained attention since the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Officially known as the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the 98-story skyscraper on Chicago’s riverfront has become so popular with refugees because they are paid up to $18.00 per hour for entry-level jobs. That’s according to a Chicago-based organization that helps refugees who are “fleeing war, terror and persecution.” Illinois is currently ranked 10th nationally in the number of refugees resettled, with 3,125 permitted residency here in 2016. Besides the Trump Tower, refugee aid officials told the I-Team that other Chicago-area employers popular with refugees are Tyson Foods, Five Star Laundry, Rivers Casino, Lettuce Entertain You and Eli’s Cheesecake. Since September 2015 the United States has admitted more than 117,000 refugees, including more than 1,000 since Trump became president on January 20. But the inflow took a hit under a Trump executive order signed in January that banned citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Last year according to state department data Muslims accounted for nearly half of all refugee admissions into the country. The Trump executive order will reduce the number of refugees annually admitted into the U.S. from 110,000 to a mere 50,000 people-the lowest ceiling in 35 years. It is currently estimated that more than 23 million refugees-half of them children-are fleeing war and repression around the world. Officials at the Trump Tower in Chicago have not responded to messages left by the I-Team. Eli’s Cheesecake officials said they currently employ 10 refugees and many other new immigrants.
