(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the years go by, Americans are getting heavier and less active. These factors are directly related to the increased prevalence of diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 30 million American adults – nearly 10 percent – have been diagnosed with the disease. The majority of people diagnosed with the condition have type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes occurs when you produce insulin but your body’s cells are unable to use it as efficiently as they should. This leads to the pancreas producing extra insulin to get glucose to your cells but eventually sugar builds up in your blood instead. The main risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes include: Genetics – Your DNA can affect how your body makes insulin African-American, Native American, Asian-American or Hispanic ethnicity Being overweight or obese – a BMI over 25 (my BMI is 30), especially if you carry extra weight around your waist Inactivity Poor nutrition High blood pressure High cholesterol Even if you do not have any of the risk factors for diabetes, you could still develop the disease. In fact, we’re seeing diabetes at younger ages and in populations where it wasn’t prevalent in the past. Even if you’re not at high risk on paper, it’s important to get routine checkups with your primary care physician. He or she can evaluate your blood glucose level with a fasting blood sugar test.)

Asking applicants for a salary history helps to perpetuate wage discrimination and the gender pay gap, given women’s long history of unequal pay. If an employer offers you a prestigious job that’s worth a big salary, they should pay you that salary regardless of past earnings. Bruce Rauner (R) Even before the March 20 primary, Rauner was vulnerable, thanks in part to an ongoing battle with the Democratic-controlled legislature, which kept the state without a full budget for more than two years, as well as from a conservative backlash over his decision to sign a bill providing state funding for abortions for low-income women. On primary day, he barely edged out socially conservative challenger Jeanne Ives. Meanwhile, J.B. Pritzker, a multibillionaire and the brother of the former Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, easily defeated Chris Kennedy, a businessman and the son of Robert F. Kennedy, and progressive state Sen. Daniel Biss. The contest between Rauner and Pritzker is expected to get ugly, as Rauner has already been spending money on TV ads attacking Pritzker, linking him to impeached and jailed former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. But in a Democratic state in a Democratic year and with an unpopular Republican governor who has lost faith on the right, this is Pritzker’s race to lose.)

Any law to protect journalists as a special class needs to define who is a journalist, and this leaves an opening for the government to start making judgement calls about who is not a journalist. While the definition adopted in the bill is fairly broad, and would encompass freelancers and all kinds of media, there are still concerns about defining who is and who is not a reporter. This is especially true because 31 of the 44 attacks documented on the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker occurred during protests. As more livestreamers and citizen journalists show up at protests, it can be tricky, even for press freedom groups, to determine who to count as a journalist. The government is often far more conservative. In December, federal prosecutors tried photojournalist and livestreamer Alexei Wood on chargers of riot, conspiracy, and destruction of property. Even though Wood’s video footage from the day shows that he took no part in any vandalism, the prosecution tried to make the entire case about whether he was a journalist or not. The definitional issue exists with other legislation to protect reporters. A shield bill, for instance, would also require the government to define journalists. This was one of the major areas of debate in 2013 when there was serious energy to put in place a bill protecting journalists from federal subpoenas that would require them to divulge their sources. In the end legislation is always about weighing the costs versus the benefits. In the context of an attorney general who claims to have 27 open leak investigations and wants to make it easier to subpoena reporters, a shield law would at least have immediate concrete benefits to weigh against potential drawbacks. The Journalist Protection Act is an effort in the right direction, and there is an argument that it could serve as a useful global model. The diagnosis of increased hostility bleeding into physical threats is spot on, given what we’ve seen in the data. However, Swalwell’s proposed legislation would not offer journalists any material benefit, even as it would allow the federal government to define who is and who is not a journalist. In the current climate, that may not be a worthwhile tradeoff.)

So far, sadly, if not outrageously, my many requests have been denied that the DCEC notify elected precinct committeemen directly and in a timely manner of any proposed changes to their polling place or to their precinct lines. Sadly, if not outrageously, the DCEC continues to insist on only notifying the chairmen of political organizations. I should write a book about when those chairmen failed to notify me in a timely manner about changes to my DuPage County Milton Township Precinct 9 in Wheaton polling place and to my precinct lines. Sadly, if not outrageously, the location of the current polling place for my precinct discourages those in my precinct from voting. In 2015, the DCEC outrageously gerrymandered my precinct. The DCEC took away about 100 residences on the west side of my precinct and gave me about 100 residences to the east out of Jeanne Ives’s precinct. Initially, the DCEC drew Ives into my precinct, but then, I am told, Ives successfully insisted that she be drawn into Precinct 65 to the southeast. Many, if not most, chairmen of political organizations want to run for government offices and they are under tremendous pressure raise money for their organizations. Consequently, they are likely, if not extremely likely to do the bidding of those who have the most religious, government, political, and/or financial clout in their municipality, in their township, in their county, and in Illinois.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wealthy twin brothers Thomas and Timothy Pearson planned to donate $100 million to the University of Chicago for creation of an institute that would study global conflict resolution. Now they’re battling the university in federal court, demanding it return the $22 million they provided since the gift was agreed to in April 2015. They and their foundation allege that the school has breached their agreement on several fronts, from failing to appoint an institute director to organizing a major conference. The contribution was tied at the time it was given with several others for the second-largest donation ever received at the school. “Rather than address these breaches with forthrightness and transparency, the U of C has repeatedly sought to avoid and deceive the foundation regarding these and other failures,” the Pearsons say in the lawsuit filed Feb. 20 in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma. “The U of C has failed to deal with the Foundation honestly and in good faith.” The university in a statement called the Pearsons’ allegations “baseless” and says it will “vigorously defend itself” against them. “The university honors its grant agreements with its donors, and it did so with the Pearsons,” it says in the statement. “Further, all academic and hiring decisions are the sole purview of the University and its faculty, guided by the principle of academic freedom.”)
