Qualified individuals will be asked to submit resumes or applications that will be reviewed by council and made available to the public for its review. The candidates will all be interviewed in an open meeting and a vote on the new council member will take place in the open. Anyone who fills a vacant seat in the middle of a term has to establish their legitimacy as a full-fledged, creditable member of the council because they were not elected directly by the voting public. But the council’s decision to hold their deliberations in public and to let the public hear from the candidates before a candidate is chosen, will go a long way torward establishing the bona fides of the eventual appointee. With Roxboro’s council currently operating without hospitalized council member Sandy Stigall, the body is at a bare minimum. The process Newell laid out earlier this week sets out a deliberate, steady process to fill the vacant seat. We encourage people interested in community service to consider putting their name in the hat.
