House Bill 5977, now pending in the Illinois General Assembly, informs us. The bill would provide that any expenditure made by a news publication or an entity that owns a news publication for the purpose of supporting or opposing a public official or candidate shall be treated as an in-kind contribution for the purposes of the Illinois Election Code. “Expenditure” does not include normal publication costs associated with a news story, commentary, or editorial, but does include costs associated with advertising related to a particular news story, commentary, or editorial. Think about that. Wirepoints certainly would be considered a “news entity.” So would countless other publications beyond traditional media, such as Huffington Post, Politico and dozens of others, including many with a particular ideological bent. Now, suppose we write a glowing article explaining why State Rep. Robert Martwick (D-Chicago) is the finest statesman in Illinois government. (That requires some imagination because, among many other reasons, he’s one of the bill’s sponsors.) No problem so far. But suppose we take the additional step of spending some money to promote our article, maybe by sending money to Facebook or Google to run an ad highlighting it. Boom. Or suppose, instead of a cash payment like that, we have somebody working Facebook and Twitter all day, as many organizations do, to help spread and post our work. Is that person’s salary any different? Consider even standard SEO software most websites use. It’s designed to optimize search engine results to drive pageviews. Isn’t the cost of that essentially the same?)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hugh Heckman, former editor for PBS NewsHour, has sued his former employers over his termination, which he alleges came two days after he referred to Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex as “not bad.” Heckman claims he was fired as a result of sex discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the New York State Human Rights Law because a similar comment by a female colleague about a man wasn’t subject to investigation or discipline. According to the complaint filed in the District Court for the Southern District of New York, Heckman, an at-will employee, was working on a story about the British Royal Family in November 2017 when he viewed a photo of Markle. To his male colleague next to him, Heckman said “‘not bad’ . . . in a low tone of voice.” This comment was overheard by a female colleague 20 feet away, who remarked that Heckman wasn’t abiding by the principles of the recent sexual harassment training session the employees had attended. Another female co-worker commented, “haven’t you learned?” The complaint alleges that Heckman “immediately explained that he had not intended any sexually harassing remark,” and that he was referring to Markle’s suitability as a match for Prince Harry with regards to her charm and beauty. One of the female co-workers reported Heckman’s comment to executive producer Scott Davis, who, two days later, told Heckman he was “regretfully” terminating his employment, offering “this latest incident” as a reason.)
