PEORIA JOURNAL STAR
— Will you miss us, now that we’re gone? – Nick Vlahos (DIERSEN: If my critics/opponents succeed in stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out, who would fill the void? Because he who pays the piper calls the tunes, the void should be filled by a volunteer like me. Who can and would spend 10+ hours each and every day putting the emails together and sending them out each and every morning and each and every evening? Who can afford and would pay for all expenses required to put the emails together and send them out? Who has the qualifications and experience needed to do the job?)
http://www.pjstar.com/news/20180916/word-on-street-will-you-miss-us-now-that-were-gone
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Journal Star’s political column is going on hiatus, at least for now, because of the recent departure of co-author Chris Kaergard. We’ve enjoyed sharing Monday mornings with you. And Sunday nights, too, since the advent of the internet has allowed the column to appear there before it hits print. But part of us feels bad about leaving when perhaps this forum might be needed the most. We’ve endeavored to provide spin-less, nonpartisan analysis and commentary regarding local issues. We’ve also tried to pull back the curtain a bit to see how the political sausage is made — while wearing aprons, because that can be messy. As for what lies ahead, we’re not stepping off our soapbox entirely. The other half of this column the past five-plus years will continue to provide state-and-local political commentary from time to time. For that and plenty of other, more frivolous stuff, check Nick in the Morning most weekdays at pjstar.com. Some of those Nick in the Morning items also will appear in the Journal Star print edition, depending on interest and importance.)

To put me under a “cloud of suspicion,” my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) ended my TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairmanship in 2012, b) ended my Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee membership in 2011, c) ended my Milton Township Republican Central Committee webmaster service in 2010 and 2004, d) ended my Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee membership in 2007, and e) ended my American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board membership in 2004. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In an interesting twist, GOP Congressman Peter Roskam’s team hopes 6th District voters reject Democrat Sean Casten for the same reason they turned on Donald Trump in 2016. Republicans see Casten as vitriolic — in a President Trump sort of way — which would be a turn-off for Hillary Clinton supporters. Roskam ran away with a victory two years ago and those 6th District voters also gave Clinton a 7-point victory over Trump. Roskam’s supporters point to Casten’s Twitter storm Friday as an example of the Democrat’s lack of decorum. Between 7:36 a.m. and 7:48 a.m., Casten spit out 11 tweets that addressed Roskam’s record on everything from aid to Harvey victims to the Violence Against Women Act. Casten called Roskam “amoral,” saying the congressman “gives money to those who don’t need it, so they will in turn give him money to help stay in power and give them more.” Casten spokesman Greg Bale says it’s wishful thinking on Roskam’s part that 6th District Dems would side with a Republican this November. “They’re trying to create a narrative that’s just not there. The issues that we’re seeing driving this are choice (and we know Roskam is unapologetically anti-choice) and health care. That’s what voters are paying attention to.”)

Beyond that, McConnaughay said she didn’t want to judge Erford without knowing what standards he was being held to, “which don’t appear to be many,” she said.)

http://www.herald-dispatch.com/business/are-american-muscle-cars-in-peril/article_3d7fb7d0-1ce0-50c1-8d93-3a820c3eea07.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet U.S. sales of the iconic Mustang, which leads the segment in 2018, fell 13 percent in 2016, almost 23 percent last year and 5 percent during the first half of this year. Sports car sales, including those from foreign brands, also have dropped during the past two years. Most muscle cars are owned by Baby Boomers, roughly 74 million people who were born from 1946 through 1964. But the youngest of the boomers are in their mid-50s now, and many are past their peak earning years and don’t have the money for a third car to go cruising. As the generation ages and enters retirement years, they’ll buy fewer new vehicles and fewer muscle cars will be sold.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: LYNDON, Illinois — A woman living in Lyndon said her landlord took down her political sign and replaced it with his own. Melissa Denning had a sign up in the yard, supporting Kris Schmidt for sheriff. “Instead of coming and talking to me about the sign, [my landlord] knocked the sign down and ran it over,” Denning said. Denning said the landlord, John Crady, told her she should vote for all Democrats. Denning decided to put up a smaller “Kris Schmidt for sheriff” sign in the window of her house. But she said the landlord stopped by Thursday night and said that sign had to come down, too. “I should be able to hang the sign in my house because I do not support Booker,” Denning said. “I don’t want Booker for sheriff.”)

https://www.westernjournal.com/us-immigration-numbers-close-shattering-108-year-old-record/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even as President Donald Trump seeks to reform the nation’s immigration laws and policies, the face of immigration has changed to the point where immigrants make up the largest share of the U.S. population since 1910. The shift that took place between 2010 and 2017 saw Asian immigrant populations on the rise and small states far from major immigration magnets logging double-digit increases in immigrants. Overall, 44.5 million Americans were foreign-born, according to the data. Census Bureau numbers from its American Community Survey, a computer-generated statistical model based on demographic information from around the nation, show that in 2017, 13.7 percent of Americans were born abroad, according to Breitbart. The record is 14.7 percent in 1910. In 2016, the final year of the Obama administration, 13.5 percent of Americans were foreign-born. The Census Bureau projects that despite efforts by the Trump administration to curb immigration and adopt a merit-based system, immigration numbers will keep rising.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Instead of “Americanizing” the Middle East, he notes, that the U.S. has become increasingly “Middle Easternized.” The polarization of American society is so extreme that the Republican and Democratic parties resemble warring tribes that see each other as existential threats. A large number of Republicans seem to regard loyalty to the person of Donald Trump as more important than their commitment to any higher goals like the rule of law or preservation of democracy internationally. The Democratic Party, for its part, has shifted away from the broad class-based coalitions of the New Deal and Great Society to advocacy on behalf of its component identity groups: African-Americans, women, the LGBT community and the like.)

— Mexican flag flies proudly over town where illegal alien killed Mollie Tibbetts – Ed Straker
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/09/mexican_flag_flies_proudly_over_town_where_illegal_alien_killed_mollie_tibbetts.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When an invading army captures a town, they usually run up the flag, to show who’s in charge. But in America, we don’t need an occupying army. We do it to ourselves. Witness the town of Brooklyn, Iowa, where Mollie Tibbetts was murdered by an illegal alien, which proudly flies the flag of Mexico. According to the liberal media, Brooklyn was one big happy multicultural town, until conservatives ruined it by complaining about the illegal alien who murdered Mollie. Really. …police found Tibbetts’s body discarded in a cornfield. They charged Cristhian Bahena Rivera, a local farmhand, with her murder. And they announced that Rivera, who had no prior criminal history, was an undocumented Mexican immigrant. For most people in Brooklyn, though, Rivera’s legal status is a distraction. This time should be about Mollie, they say, not the man accused of killing her. This is the liberal line. On the statistically rare occasions when a white person kills a black, the liberal media can talk about nothing else other than the race of the accused. But when an illegal alien does the killing, they don’t want to talk about perpetrators. They treat it like the weather. It’s just something that happens.)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— The Democratic game plan – Robert Knight
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/sep/2/as-democrats-move-left-they-must-replace-the-ameri/
(
FROM THE ARTICLE: The “progressives”’ game plan to re-acquire power in Washington and make it permanent has been shockingly obvious for some time: Import millions of illegal immigrants, hook them on government aid and turn them into voters — legally or illegally. Two Democrats running for Congress in Texas have come out for decriminalizing illegal immigration, along with Beto O’Rourke, who is running for Ted Cruz’s U.S. Senate seat. Virtually all Democratic office holders oppose voter ID laws. In March, Nation magazine writer Sean McElwee called for abolishing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), a demand repeated by “progressives” around the country. The Washington Post has editorialized against adding a question about citizenship to the U.S. Census, saying it looks “suspiciously like an underhanded way to depress Democratic representation in Washington.” Districts with high numbers of illegal aliens who cannot legally vote have an advantage because the Census determines congressional seats and presidential electors based on population. So, the more illegals, the merrier for Democrats. The Dems must replace the American electorate because their plunge into “free” government health care, “free” college tuition, open borders, confiscatory taxes, anti-police rhetoric, activist judges and bizarre sexual politics is alienating more and more “everyday” Americans. The left needs new voting blocs. It’s the only way they’ll stay competitive, especially when the Trump administration has the economy roaring like a Ferrari. Millions of evangelical Christians and moderate-to-conservative Catholics voted for Mr. Trump because they saw him as their best bet against a hostile Deep State and its media allies. Portions of the IRS, the FBI and other federal agencies had been criminally politicized under President Obama, and Hillary Clinton would have finished the job. With state power unchecked since the Reagan years, Uncle Sam has morphed into Nurse Ratched, presiding over a giant sanitarium. That’s the issue ignored by the media: Democrats are at war with normalcy of any kind and want to impose their cracked view of reality on the rest of us.)

— Why It’s so Hard for Republicans to Win in Illinois Democrats and Republicans were once evenly matched in Illinois. So how did the Party of Lincoln fall behind in his own homeland? – EDWARD MCCLELLAND
http://www.chicagomag.com/city-life/August-2018/Why-Its-So-Hard-for-Republicans-to-Win-in-Illinois/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s possible to trace the divergent fortunes of the Republican and Democratic parties in Illinois by looking at the voting histories of two counties: DuPage, in the suburbs of Chicago, and Williamson, in Southern Illinois coal country. DuPage was once a bulwark of the Illinois Republican Party, having supported its presidential candidates since the days of Abraham Lincoln. After World War II, DuPage’s villages burgeoned with middle-class homeowners who had fled Chicago’s corrupt political machine, and considered Republicans the party of good government and fiscal responsibility. . .How times have changed. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won Illinois by an even larger margin than her husband, but she won only 12 counties, most of them in the Chicago area. She won DuPage County 53%-38%, and lost Williamson County 67%-28%.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that one should introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility in Russia for dismissing employees of pre-retirement age. “I deem it necessary to introduce administrative and even criminal responsibility for employers for dismissing workers of pre-retirement age, as well as for refusing to hire citizens for work because of their age,” Putin said in a televised address to the nation in connection with the widely discussed pension reform in Russia. One should envisage such responsibility within in the framework of additional guarantees that will protect interests of older citizens on the labor market. Today, the retirement age in Russia is 60 years for men and 55 years for women. This retirement age was introduced during the 1930s. The need to raise the retirement age in Russia has been discussed for a long time already due to the increased life expectancy and the inability to provide a decent pension while the number of employed individuals in the country is decreasing, and the number of pensioners is growing. In most countries of the world, the retirement age is 60-65 years.)

One could argue that without DuPage County, Illinois would have to immediately file for bankruptcy. DuPage County is run by Republicans. One could argue that if more statewide candidates were elected from DuPage County, Illinois would not be having the financial problems that it is having. DAILY CALLER
— CONSERVATIVES AT FACEBOOK FORM ‘FB’ERS FOR POLITICAL DIVERSITY’ TO COMBAT COMPANY’S IDEOLOGICAL ECHOCHAMBER – Kyle Perisic (DIERSEN: Conservative Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains in Illinois should organize and form an association. It could be named the “Association of Conservative Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains of Illinois” or ACRPCI. In your township/ward and in your county, what percent of the Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains are conservative? What have they done that shows that they support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, Second Amendment, and the rest of the planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform?)
https://dailycaller.com/2018/08/28/facebook-political-diversity-james-damore/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than one hundred conservative Facebook employees have joined an internal employee message board to protest what they call the company’s “intolerant” liberal culture. The group, “FB’ers for Political Diversity,” was created last week, The New York Times reported Tuesday, and aims to promote ideological diversity within the company. Facebook’s workforce of more than 25,000 is viewed as largely liberal. “We are a political monoculture that’s intolerant of different views,” wrote senior Facebook engineer and group cofounder Brian Amerige in a post, The NYT added. “We claim to welcome all perspectives, but are quick to attack — often in mobs — anyone who presents a view that appears to be in opposition to left-leaning ideology.” Amerige’s post continues to criticize Facebook’s emphasis on racial and gender diversity and how it, along with the company’s overt liberal bias, threatens the “viability as a company.” Facebook banned a dissenting conservative group in December 2016, Business Insider reported in August 2017. The group, “Facebook Anon,” was an anonymous group chat for supporters of then-candidate Donald Trump. It was shut down for violating Facebook’s policies against anonymous accounts, but Business Insider reported that the talks “turned ugly and … alarmed management.” Amerige’s post echoes similar concerns of a memo former Google engineer James Damore wrote in August 2017 that criticized Google’s “ideological echo chamber,” The Daily Caller reported. “[W]e tear down posters welcoming Trump supporters. We regularly propose removing [tech investor Peter] Thiel from our board because he supported Trump,” Amerige wrote. “We’re quick to suggest firing people who turn out to be misunderstood, and even quicker to conclude our colleagues are bigots.” Amerige added that Facebook has made “all lives matter” a “fireable offense” and that human resources investigates anyone who dares “criticize Islam’s human rights record.” Amerige’s concerns are not without any evidence. Facebook cofounder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has donated to left-leaning campaigns in the 2018 and 2020 elections, The Daily Caller News Foundation reported on Aug. 23. Facebook also has a well-documented history of removing conservative content, some of which was restored with an apologized after public backlash. (RELATED: Facebook Flags New York Post Article About Trump Voters As ‘Spam’) Facebook has also removed videos and shadow banned content. Facebook apologize for mistakenly removing videos from the popular conservative page PragerU on Aug. 17, The Daily Caller reported. FB’ers for Political Diversity’s only rule is “if you attack a person’s character, rather than their ideas, you will be banned.”)

One of the homeowners in my precinct, a registered Republican voter, angrily phoned me, angrily claimed to be out of town, angrily claimed that she had just been alerted by her doorbell camera that I had just left Republican literature on her front door, angrily claimed that literature encouraged burglars to break into her home, and angrily demanded that I immediately come back and take that literature back, which I did. WASHINGTON MONTHLY
— Republicans Make a List of Trump Scandals They’re Covering Up – Nancy LeTourneau (DIERSEN: I worked for GAO 1980-1997. One could say that the Democrats who ran GAO in 1997 forced me to take their early retirement “offer” to punish Newt Gingrich.)
https://washingtonmonthly.com/2018/08/28/republicans-make-a-list-of-trump-scandals-theyre-covering-up/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: What Newt saw to is what Paul Glastris and Haley Sweetland Edwards called, “The Big Lobotomy.” A quick refresher: In 1995, after winning a majority in the House for the first time in forty years, one of the first things the new Republican House leadership did was gut Congress’s workforce. They cut the “professional staff” (the lawyers, economists, and investigators who work for committees rather than individual members) by a third. They reduced the “legislative support staff” (the auditors, analysts, and subject-matter experts at the Government Accountability Office [GAO], the Congressional Research Service [CRS], and so on) by a third, too, and killed off the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) entirely…Since 2011, with a Tea Party-radicalized GOP back in control of the House, Congress has cut its budget by a whopping 20 percent, a far higher ratio than any other federal agency, leading, predictably, to staff layoffs, hiring and salary freezes, and drooping morale.)
— JUNE/JULY/AUGUST 2014 FLASHBACK: The Big Lobotomy How Republicans Made Congress Stupid – Paul Glastris and Haley Sweetland Edwards (DIERSEN: I worked for GAO 1980-1997. One could say that the Democrats who ran GAO in 1997 forced me to take their early retirement “offer” to punish Newt Gingrich.)
https://washingtonmonthly.com/magazine/junejulyaug-2014/the-big-lobotomy/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The third target of Gingrich’s attacks was the legislative support agencies. The Government Accountability Office, Congressional Budget Office, Congressional Research Service, and now-defunct Office of Technology Assessment operated on a bipartisan basis, offering measured reports on topics suggested by members themselves. Sometimes, these agencies act as helpful librarians, and sometimes they’re more like referees, carefully adjudicating among the competing quantitative claims of various members and outside groups. Gingrich, perhaps not surprisingly, viewed them all as potential rivals to his singular narrative.)

ENTREPRENEUR
— 6 Ways Healthy Office Competition Builds Teams and Improves Productivity – John Rampton (DIERSEN: When you got promotions, what competition did you face? GAO is in the legislative branch. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates had a very low opinion of executive branch employees like I was for almost 12 years (Post Office 1966-1969 and IRS 1971-1980). They always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I got promoted in 1972, 1973, and 1974 only because the IRS employees who I competed against for those promotions were inferior people. They always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that GAO would never have hired me in 1971, and if it had, it would never have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974. They stressed that I did not earn an MBA until 1976, that I did not pass the CPA examination until 1979, and that I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting until 1980.)

— DISGUSTING, TRAGIC: POT PUSHERS ARE OVERJOYED: Rauner set to sign medical marijuana expansion bill allowing drug as painkiller alternative – Robert McCoppin
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-medical-marijuana-opioids-illinois-expansion-20180827-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In general, Rauner has opposed expanding the medical marijuana program, but a recent poll showing Pritzker with a large lead may have put pressure on him to support the politically popular measure. In addition, Rauner recently approved other measures requiring insurance coverage for opioid abuse and continuing education for doctors about opioid prescriptions. Kevin Sabet, president of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, opposes the expansion of medical marijuana, warning that it could lead to more addiction, more drivers who are under the influence and more users suffering from the drug’s harmful effects on attention, memory, decision-making and brain development. “From a scientific perspective, it makes no sense,” Sabet said. “The most comprehensive study on the issue was just published in The Lancet and found marijuana didn’t help with pain, nor did it reduce opioid use. “From a political perspective,” Sabet added, “it likely signals he feels pressure from J.B. Pritzker, who has welcomed pot with open arms.” But in states that have legalized medical marijuana, some studies have shown a decrease in opioid prescriptions and in opioid-related overdose deaths. Cannabis remains illegal under federal law.)

Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986. CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE WITH COLOR PICTURE: HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: If you’re marching, someone’s watching – Christopher Borrelli (DIERSEN: My policy has been to deliver Republican literature to all the homes in my precinct that have at least one Republican or one Independent voter. Needless-to-say, if you are a Republican who delivers Republican literature door-to-door, you should assume that Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, RINOs, and other anti-Trumps are watching you very closely, if not recording every move that you make and recording every word that you say. In my precinct, the anti-Trumps (of whom I estimate about 30 are registered Republican voters) watch me very closely when I deliver Republican literature door-to-door and they do everything that they can to discourage me from delivering that literature. Their tactics include closing their garage doors as I approach their homes. One registered Republican voter in my precinct angrily phoned me and demanded that I immediately come back to her home and take back the Republican literature that I had just left on her door. That literature was addressed to both her and to her registered Republican husband.)

Further, I went on vacations with a coworker to Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Jamaica while I worked for IRS 1973-1976. D&M Corvette in Downers Grove has appraised my 1972 Corvette at $41,500. But that was after I recently invested $6,702 in the car – $5,228 to D&M ($3,466 labor and $1,762 parts) and $1,474 to Coker Tire for 5 Firestone Wide Oval radial tires. I had not started the car for almost 9 years. Most of D&M’s bill was for repairing major damage that ethanol had done to car’s entire fuel system. The master cylinder and four calipers were replaced, A/C was charged, carburetor was rebuilt and fuel pump replaced, minor electrical and mechanical problems were fixed, five new tires were installed, new battery was installed, etc. I could have avoided much if not all of the fuel system and brake problems if I had driven the car more – at least once each summer. But my excuse for not starting the car since 2009 is that since 2004, I have spent 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)

— Maybe the suburbs should secede from the state – Doug Finke

In the suburbs, people paid more than $4.2 billion more in taxes than they got back. And downstate? They paid about $8 billion in taxes and got $12 billion worth of spending. The paper further separated areas of downstate and determined the central part of the region got back nearly twice as much as it paid in.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Their increasingly combative relationship has served as a metaphor of sorts for the Republican Party: the former Vietnam POW and “proud conservative” who fell short to Barack Obama in his run for president in 2008 versus the loud draft avoider who rapidly seized control of the GOP and White House eight years later. . .Not long afterward, McCain appeared to take a shot at Trump for avoiding the draft during the Vietnam War. “One aspect of the [Vietnam] conflict by the way that I will never ever countenance is that we drafted the lowest income level of America, and the highest income level found a doctor that would say that they had a bone spur,” McCain said during an interview with CSPAN. McCain did not mention Trump by name, but his meaning appeared clear. Trump received five wartime deferments, including one in which a doctor diagnosed him with bone spurs.)
