(FROM THE ARTICLE: So, Adam has become the darling of suburban Dems and maybe 15-20% of GOP voters who, like me, agree with his criticism of Trump. Not a recipe for success in a statewide primary for U.S. Senate or governor, unless he stirs up several opponents, and can then win with 30% or so of the vote. Trump loyalists in my rural area appear to be sticking with the ex-president. They believe he speaks their blunt language to the powers that be and represents them more effectively than anyone ever has or ever will. Their loyalty to him is fierce; to the GOP, their faithfulness is secondary, if at all. For the near term, Trump needs a big objective, and that has to be the presidency in 2024. He will seek to become the first non-successive, two-term president since Grover Cleveland. But the Trump Party, post-insurrection, will always be a minority in America, probably 35% or so of voters. GOP officials are desperate to make their party more than the Trump Party, but Trump will make that nigh impossible. Trump is a cult figure, not a party leader. If you’re not for him 100%, you’re against him, to his mind. GOP candidates will have to pass the Trump loyalty litmus test, or face his wrath and that of his base. In downstate Illinois, Trump loyalty from candidates will come easy, and be mostly sincere. It will certainly be required to avoid a primary challenge next spring. I think the loyalty test will be trickier in the vote rich suburbs. I expect many district-level GOP primary contests between pro- and anti-Trump candidates. Also here in Illinois, Big Money appears to have replaced party organizations as the critical element in election contests. Gov. JB Pritzker and billionaire investor Ken Griffin each put more than $50 million into the single contest over whether to tax the rich more than others, which Pritzker favored and lost. Without Griffin’s money to blanket the airwaves with trenchant advertising attacks on increased taxation, Priztker would likely have won. Pritzker is vulnerable to defeat in a 2022 re-election bid. But who will credibly take on him and his money? (The governor spent $171 million of his own money in his election win in 2018.) The answer is only someone who can find a Daddy Warbucks funder of the Ken Griffin class. Not to be cast aside entirely, the Illinois GOP recently narrowly defeated a Trump conservative, and elected as state chairman a calm, mainstream Republican lawyer from the remarkably successful Tracy family of western Illinois. Tracy siblings operate and wholly own the 6,000-employee DOT Foods enterprise of tiny Mount Sterling in equally miniscule Brown County. Don Tracy may not himself be in the Griffin billionaire class (I don’t know), but he sure has the stature to get his phone calls returned from traditional, major GOP donors. At present, the Illinois GOP holds no state offices and but one-third of legislative and congressional seats. It has no money, and an uncomfortable, at best, relationship with the Trump base; after all, the Tracy forces worked hard to eke out a narrow win over a Trump candidate for party chair. Illinois needs a competitive two-party political system. I commend Don Tracy for taking on a thankless role, but I worry that the GOP, both nationally and in Illinois, is in for a rough ride until we get past the Trump era. Trump backer and suburban businessman Gary Rabine has already announced his candidacy for governor in the 2022 GOP primary. Expect more. Will Kinzinger join the fray? Stay tuned.)

Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore. “A climate of intolerance has been established and has stifled healthy and normal debate. Anyone who values their own freedom of speech should be concerned.” Senate Bill 238, also known as the Diversity of Thought Act, seeks to add political affiliation as a protected class under the Fair Employment and Housing Act. That law currently bars employment and housing discrimination based on someone’s race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, sexual orientation, familial status, marital status, disability, nationality and source of income. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Now, new legislation from Senator Mark Warner will make changes to the bill. Democrat Warner introduced the Safe Tech Act to the Senate on February 5. This bill would essentially update the protections that social media corporations would have enjoyed under section 230 and hold them more accountable for the content that is posted on their platforms and expose them to many more lawsuits. What lies at the heart of this though, is the voices of the users of social media platforms. They would need to be a lot more rules put in place and a lot more moderators working around the clock to make sure that these rules are being adhered to. In a tweet, Warner said that “The SAFE TECH Act doesn’t interfere with free speech – it’s about allowing these platforms to finally be held accountable for harmful, often criminal, behaviour enabled by their platforms to which they have turned a blind eye for too long.” Should this bill be successful, it will certainly be a game-changer for the way social media companies are run if they don’t want to be caught on the wrong side of the law.)

State Rep. Andrew Chesney, R-Freeport, took to Facebook Thursday to call Kinzinger “a political embarrassment,” adding that the Republican congressman’s newly formed political action committee Country First should be called “Adam First.” “I don’t think he’s in touch with what mainstream Republicans are really saying,” Chesney said. “The area that I take greatest exception to is that while he’s been on his media blitz trying to talk about conservatism, the congressman is always the last one to attend the Lincoln Day dinner and the first one to leave. “He’s listening to a D.C. crowd rather than listening to what Republicans are saying.” On a Tuesday media call, Kinzinger said he created his Country First video and website about a week ago as a way to express what he felt was happening — “kind of my mourning for the Republican Party” — and give people a place to take action if they agreed with him. “The outpouring of support has been incredible,” Kinzinger said. Kinzinger wouldn’t say how much money has been raised thus far. He said raising money wasn’t the goal. “It’s about building a movement, and my goodness it’s shown that there is a real desire out there for something different.” Rockford Republicans state Sen. Dave Syverson and state Rep. Joe Sosnowski also said that the congressman’s Country First message, which says that the “Republican party has lost its way,” doesn’t ring true with them or the Republicans they work with in Boone and Winnebago counties. “I don’t think splitting up the party is the answer,” Syverson said. “Who doesn’t want country first? That sounds almost like ‘Make America Great Again.’” Kinzinger’s actions and statements of late are actually the cause of some of the dissension in the today’s Republican party, Syverson said. Syverson said he heard from many Rock River Valley Republicans in recent weeks who are concerned over Kinzinger’s stance on the impeachment. He said he tells those voters to call Kinzinger’s office. “If you feel you disagree with him on something, let him know,” he said. Sosnowski said Kizinger’s message of focusing on what’s best for the country and de-escalating the rhetoric and political in-fighting are admirable and valuable goals. “I disagree with his approach,” Sosnowski said. “It’s a conflicting message.
