(FROM THE LETTER: An Oct. 28 letter to the Daily Herald advocated greater access to marijuana for people suffering chronic pain, citing a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). But if you visit the JAMA website and enter the search word “marijuana,” you’ll also see dozens of articles showing that marijuana can kill more than just pain: it can negatively impact things like cognitive function, moral clarity and the general health and well-being of users and their children and grandchildren. Another recent letter in the Herald, this one in Carolyn Hax’s advice column, highlighted marijuana as a killer of ambition. Hax’s correspondent told about her 20-something boyfriend, a daily user of marijuana who, among other things, hadn’t driven his own car in two years simply because he had lost his car keys! A question, dear reader: when you were 20-somelthing — maybe you still are — would you have given up driving your car even for two days, let along two years, just because you couldn’t find your keys? I’m writing this letter on the day before Halloween and can’t help but wonder, as our nation rushes headlong toward allowing greater access to marijuana, are we in danger of producing endless generations of ambitionless, leisure-loving, mentally challenged zombies? (FROM THE ARTICLE: In a new Money Magazine article, financial guru Suze Orman says we should retire at 70 – not a month or year before. She writes that for healthy people in their 60s, retirements can last 30 years. So, how far do we have to go to meet her goals? When are we retiring now? Good Question. According to the U.S. Census, the average American retires at age 63. That’s up from age 62 in 1997. So what’s changed? “Our culture has changed, our concept of independence has changed and the cost of living has changed,” Ernie Owens, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Business said. Owens says back in the 1970s and early 80s, many families relied on one income and a pension. The concept of the 401(k) then took over which meant more people had to rely on putting away the savings themselves. At the same time, health care costs have increased, people are living longer, healthier lives and some are choosing to stay on in the workforce. “The attitude toward work has changed,” Owens says. “A lot of people want to work because it’s something to do, it gives them worth.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 32 percent of Americans age 65-69 were employed at least part time. And for Americans between age 70-74, workforce participation was 19 percent. But, just because people want to work doesn’t mean they can. According to the Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey 2017, 61 percent of Americans say they retired sooner than planned. They cites bad health, unemployment and family responsibilities as the top three reasons.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The focus on D.C. allows the first-term governor to show supporters he has a plan for delivering on the promises he made as a candidate despite losing a two-year budget battle with Democrats over the summer. And it comes as Rauner prepares for a re-election campaign in which he needs to win back his conservative base after his approval of controversial abortion and immigration legislation left many of them angry. Much of the major legislation Rauner signed this year — an overhaul of the state’s education funding system and a boost in spending on schools; a bill protecting immigrants from federal deportation efforts; an expansion of taxpayer-funded abortions; and a new law allowing automatic voter registration — are measures that Democrats first pushed. Left undone is his promise to get the state’s financial house in order, which hinged in part on cutting the cost of Illinois’ unionized government workforce. Speaking to a gathering of business leaders in late September, Rauner said he was turning to Washington for help with one part of that effort — getting control of Illinois’ massive pension debt, which stands at about $130 billion and ranks among the worst in the nation. “We need the help. We need the help because the system’s rigged. Can’t change it, can’t fix it,” Rauner said. As a candidate and as governor, Rauner had proposed cutting pension costs by transitioning workers to less generous benefit packages or 401(k)-style retirement plans. But past attempts to cut retirement costs have run up against legal problems. The Illinois Constitution stipulates that benefits cannot be “diminished or impaired” once they are bestowed to workers, and the state Supreme Court has stood by those words. The governor thinks Congress can release the state from that restriction by passing a law that would give states permission to come up with cost-saving changes to their pension programs. The option would be available to states only after they had established that spending money on workers’ retirement plans is hampering other essential services.)
