hundred dollars a month. This was how much money my financial adviser told me to
save, back when I was in my 20s and 30s. “Damn it, Jerry, if you do this you’ll
have a retirement nest egg waiting for you 30 years from now,” George Wilson
told me sternly. He was one of my father’s poker buddies who once sold me a
life insurance policy. He was intimidating and outspoken. He also was 100%
right. Wilson tried slipping me a proverbial ace in the hole for my losing hand
of cards in life. I was too stupid and shortsighted to accept it. After a few
years of scraping together $100 each month to pay into this seemingly mythical
retirement fund, I stopped contributing. I eventually cashed it in to pay off
some credit card bills, telling myself that I couldn’t afford it any longer. It
was the cheapest rationalization I could afford back then. At that point in my
life, I was earning a meager income in a family food business, I had two young
children, and I was already thinking of cashing in my marriage. Putting away
$100 a month, every month for 30-plus years, seemed impossible. My wiser self
in the future has never forgiven my stupid self from the past. In my younger
days, I likely spent $100 a month on “must have” purchases – my Coca-Cola
addiction, drive-through junk food, weekend entertainment in Chicago, a massive
collection of music cassettes and CDs, you name it. These unnecessary
expenditures, in hindsight, have only compounded my anger toward myself. I try
to keep this in mind when I now hear about millennials who believe retirement
savings is a myth or a rumor they’ve been told by gray-haired geezers like me.
What do we know, right? In my 20s, I thought the same thing about “old man
Wilson,” who was only in his 40s at the time. He seemed to be in his 70s or
80s. (He’s still around. Please don’t tell him.) Youth has a way of distorting
our perception of life. We had more answers than questions. We had more time
than money. We had more reasons to not think about getting older, getting
unhealthy, or getting prepared for retirement. It all seemed so… impossible, or
at least improbable. As if it would never happen.)

process to appoint a replacement for state Sen. Toi Hutchinson, D-Olympia
Fields, is veiled in secrecy. That’s the way it usually works. Under state law,
local party leaders have the right to fill legislative vacancies. Unlike other
states, no special elections are held. Because Hutchinson is a Democrat, her
party will choose a successor. When asked about it, a local Democratic Party
leader revealed there were four applicants for the position but declined to
identify them. I’m told Hutchinson’s last day is Sunday. After she resigns, the
state party has 30 days to appoint a replacement. Both Democrats and
Republicans typically cloak the entire appointment process in secrecy. However,
Kankakee County Democratic Chairman John Willard said his party will hold a
public meeting, although constituents will be barred from asking questions of
candidates. I’m glad a public meeting is planned, but I think candidates should
field questions from prospective constituents — something like the interview
process for presidential candidates at Kankakee Community College. Why can’t we
hold special elections when legislators resign? Both Democrats and Republicans
warn that such elections cost taxpayers a lot, while private appointment
processes cost practically nothing. That’s an easy argument for them to make
because they’re the ones filling vacancies. But it could be argued the costs of
special elections are worth the benefits to democracy. Most vacancies occur
when legislators resign. The most understandable reason is health. But many
others quit because they find higher-paying jobs, often as lobbyists.
Hutchinson is leaving to take a $220,000-a-year job in Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s
administration. For years, I have suspected that so many legislators resign in
Illinois because party insiders get to appoint replacements. It would be harder
to quit mid-term if they knew that taxpayers would foot the bill for a special

everything and everyone around it. How close is a DIA to where you live or
work? Illinois Democrats want pot shops to open up in DIAs to revitalize those
areas. Wheaton is the DuPage County Seat. The Democrats who run the Illinois
Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (IDCEO) have outrageously
designated western Wheaton (Census Tract 8426.04) as being a DIA, that is, an
area that has high rates of arrest, conviction, and incarceration related to
cannabis as well as poverty and unemployment. Needless-to-say, that must be a

Applications for licenses to operate 75 marijuana stores are now available,
offering the first path into the industry for those who don’t already operate a
cannabis business in Illinois. A map the state released identifying areas hit
hardest by the war on drugs could play a vital role for some applicants. More
than 2 million people live in the hard-hit areas identified on the map. A
qualified resident of those areas who applies to grow and sell recreational
marijuana will get an additional 50 points on the application, which has a
maximum score of 250 points. . .To create the map, officials broke the state
down by U.S. Census tracts. To qualify, an area had to have an average annual
rate of at least 30 marijuana-related arrests per 10,000 residents or at least
one marijuana-related parole per 10,000 residents. Roughly 10 years of arrest
and parole data was analyzed, said Michael Negron, assistant director of the
Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The data reflects the
addresses of people with marijuana arrests or paroles, not where the incidents
occurred. Additionally, an area either must have a poverty rate above 20%, more
than 20% of households in the area must receive Supplemental Nutrition
Assistance Program benefits, also known as food stamps, or the area’s average
unemployment rate over the past two years must have been at least 20% higher
than the national average. “The data is intended to be objective while still
keeping in mind where we think the impact of the war on drugs is,” Negron said.
“That means the data really sets the map.” Here’s a look at the poverty and
SNAP participation rates of some census tracts identified on the map: . . .

Having some minimum requirements combined with previous hiring data is a great
place to start. However, employers should go beyond that, and focus on hiring
the right culture fit. . .cultural fit is essential. An organizational culture
is a system of shared assumptions, values, and beliefs that govern how people
behave in a company. These shared values have a strong influence on the people
in the organization, and dictate how they act and perform. Unfortunately, many
hires struggle due to culture misfit, where they do not fit in with the team,
they are not aligned with the values and goals pre-established, or their
personality and workstyle is not compatible with what the company offers. A
great way for employers to start seriously considering culture fit when hiring
is to, firstly, define their organization’s culture, and make sure that it is
visible and communicated regularly. Some employers do this by developing a
strong online employer brand that can be viewed by potential job applicants. By
announcing their organizational culture to potential applicants, it is more
likely that employers will receive candidates who truly share their core values
and principles and are able to smoothly assimilate.)

does not believe the president would be in his current predicament if he had
stayed as chief of staff. White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said in
a statement of her own Saturday: “I worked with John Kelly, and he was
totally unequipped to handle the genius of our great President.” Trump
pushed back on Kelly’s comments in a statement: “John Kelly never said

August 2019, the Economic Policy Institute reported that, in 2018, the average
pay of CEOs at America’s 350 top firms hit $17.2 million―an increase, when
adjusted for inflation, of 1,007.5 percent since 1978. By contrast, the typical
worker’s wage, adjusted for inflation, grew by only 11.9 percent over this
40-year period. In 1965, the ratio of CEO-to-worker’s pay stood at 20-to-1; by
2018 (when CEOs received another hefty pay raise and workers received a 0.2
percent pay cut), it had reached 278-to-1. An AFL-CIO study, released in June
2019, had similar findings. Examining compensation at Standard & Poors 500
companies, the labor federation reported that average CEO pay in 2018 had increased
by $5.2 million over the preceding 10 years. This resulted in an average
CEO-to-worker pay ratio of 287-to-1. These figures, of course, are only
averages, and at numerous major corporations, the economic gap between boss and
worker is much greater. According to the AFL-CIO, the CEO-to-worker pay ratio
at Walmart (America’s largest private employer) is 1,076 to 1, at Walt Disney
Company 1,424-to-1, at McDonald’s 2,124-to-1, and at Gap 3,566-to-1. At 49
