NEW YORK POST
— What’s ‘immoral’ about caring for America’s poor first? – Betsy McCaughey
https://nypost.com/2018/12/11/whats-immoral-about-caring-for-americas-poor-first/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Not building the wall is what’s truly immoral. Allowing poor migrants to flood across the southern border forces taxpayers to toil longer and pay more taxes to feed and house them, accommodate their children in public schools and pay for their medical care. Americans are already maxed out caring for our own needy, including the homeless sprawled on city streets. This nation has some 40 million people in poverty, one out of every eight people and one of every six children. That’s far higher than the share of people living in poverty in Canada or the UK. Our country doesn’t need to import more poverty. For the same reason, Trump is proposing that only legal immigrants who can support themselves without government handouts be granted green cards. Mayor Bill de Blasio blasted Trump’s proposal as “un-American.” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said “the plan is ugly, it is cruel.” Really? Why should Americans be compelled to provide a safety net for throngs pressing to get into the country? Milton Friedman warned two decades ago that America can have open borders or a generous welfare system but not both. Open borders boost a growing economy by providing a source of labor. But that works only so long as immigrants are barred from government benefits. Trump is tightening regulations under a longstanding law, on the books since 1882, that bars immigrants likely to need government benefits from obtaining permanent status. Starting with President Bill Clinton, the law has been applied so laxly that almost no one is denied a green card for that reason. A staggering 63 percent of households headed by a noncitizen depend on Medicaid, food stamps, housing assistance or in some cases all of these taxpayer-funded programs, according to a December 2018 analysis of census data by the restrictionist Center for Immigration Studies. That figure is almost double what it is for households headed by American-born citizens. Right now, newly arrived legal immigrants who earn little or nothing are eligible for fully subsidized ObamaCare plans, with taxpayers footing the entire bill, even for copays and deductibles. And 6.8 million children of immigrants are enrolled in Medicaid, according to the Urban Institute. Meanwhile, millions of American-born taxpayers who fund this giveaway to newcomers are going without insurance themselves, because they can’t afford it. That doesn’t jibe with the ideal that a democracy’s first duty is to protect its own citizens. Don’t expect the American public to buy into open borders and handouts for all comers. All Americans have to do is look across the Atlantic to see the disastrous results of that policy.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-11/shutdown-impact-would-be-limited-as-only-some-agencies-unfunded
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An estimated 400,000 federal employees would work without pay and 350,000 would be furloughed, according to a congressional Democratic aide. The essential employees who work during a shutdown are paid retroactively when the government reopens and payroll operations resume. After previous shutdowns, Congress also has passed legislation to retroactively pay furloughed workers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: During her remarks, she also said the clerk’s office gave employee Adam Johnson paid leave to try to unseat State Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, in this spring’s Republican primary election, for which she said the county’s personal leave policy had no provision. Kaczmarek compared the allegations against Hinds to recent lawsuits against DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba. Several veteran deputies have claimed they were punished by Zaruba for unionizing and refusing to support the sheriff politically. One suit has been settled, but more are pending. “Prohibited political activity is a big problem in DuPage County. It impacts all of us,” she said. “Yet, this problem is so easy to fix with tougher policies, better training and a willingness to enforce laws which already exist. Our county officials have chosen to do nothing and here we are today.” Hinds did not respond to requests for comment and Paul Darrah, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office, confirmed receipt of the complaint but said he could not speak further on the matter.)

Mine did while I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997 a) because they were Democrats and I was a Republican; b) because I refused to help them get rid of employees because they were Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran and had not made GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40; c) because I opposed political affiliation discrimination; d) because I opposed reverse discrimination; and e) because I opposed age discrimination. Because of the aforesaid, a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The report lists certified personnel from A to Z. It shows their current salaries, years with the district (“step”) and graduate-level education (“lane”). It also shows what they would be paid as their experience increases over the four years of the proposed contract. For some, it also includes a pay increase because of additional graduate education. According to the district’s calculations, individual teachers’ pay would increase, in four years, by as little as 6.56 percent to up to 44.71 percent for one individual. Actual dollar increases per person range from $4,044 over those four years to $28,796. The first figure is for a teacher who is on step 17 and does not have any graduate credits. The latter is for a teacher who is on step 16 with a master’s degree but who has now attained either a doctorate or a second master’s degree.)

— For IBM, Reskilling The Workforce For AI Takes On A New Urgency – Joe McKendrick (DIERSEN: Have you ever reskilled yourself? I have. In 1992, when I was 43 years old, after my Democrat GAO superiors had made it clear that they would never again assign me to audits of IRS, after they had assigned me to audits of federal financial institution regulators, I began taking graduate courses at IIT, and in 1997, when I was 48 years old, I earned a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT.)

— Why Employers Should Support The Expansion Of Social Security – Nancy Altman (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, all their operatives, and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) because they want to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) because they want to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://www.forbes.com/sites/nancyaltman/2018/12/06/why-employers-should-support-the-expansion-of-social-security/#6e693f784be5
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The nation is facing a looming retirement income crisis where workers will be unable to retire and maintain their standards of living. Age discrimination laws properly prohibit employers from firing older workers simply because of their age. An expanded Social Security will provide those older workers with greater opportunity to enjoy some leisure after a lifetime of work. It will also lower employer costs, since older workers are often the most expensive, and allow younger workers to move forward in their careers. Moreover, retirees are consumers. As they age, they tend to stop saving and start spending what savings they were able to accumulate during their working years. The goods and services they purchase are essential for a strong economy. A report published a half-decade ago found that Social Security’s combined payments in 2012 resulted in the production of approximately $1.4 trillion in economic output, the creation of over 9.2 million jobs, and an increase in the tax revenues of local, state, and federal governments that exceeded $222 billion. And that was a half-decade ago. Those positive effects are substantially larger today. And an expanded Social Security would produce even greater returns.)

ABC7
— FULL COVERAGE: George HW Bush funeral plans, legacy and a look back at his life
https://abc7chicago.com/society/watch-george-hw-bush-funeral-plans-life-and-legacy/4808060/
— More than 50,000 hens killed in egg farm fire in Grant Park, Illinois (DIERSEN: I am related to the Mussmans. I visited this farm with my parents and brother many times during the 1950s and 1960s. For many years, the Mussmans and the Diersens got together once a month on a Saturday evening alternating between their homes. In the early 1950s, Ralph Mussman (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2008-03-06-0803051510-story.html)  saved me from drowning when I fell off a pier at a lake in Wisconsin.   He  took me on my first plane ride; his daughter Sandy and I sat in the back seat of a rented Piper Cub. During the 1970s, his getting a major contract to supply McDonald’s with eggs for its new Egg McMuffin (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMuffin) helped him to dramatically expand his egg business. I hunted pheasants on his farm a number of times. During the 1960s, my father worked for him part-time for a while delivering eggs to homes in Park Forest.  During the 1970s, a friend of mine who worked for the Secret Service rented a small plane in northwest Indiana and we landed on the air strip on this farm and visited with Ralph. Ralph owned a 1964 Oldsmobile Starfire that helped spark my interest in cars.)
https://abc7chicago.com/more-than-50000-hens-killed-in-egg-farm-fire/4829385/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at Mussman’s Back Acres at 9998 N 16000E Road in Grant Park, Ill. and the fire was raised to a fifth alarm before it was struck out, fire officials said. Chopper 7HD flew overhead as firefighters poured water onto the farm. The Grant Park Fire Department said five buildings at the plant were damaged, with two receiving heavy fire damage and the other three damaged by heavy smoke. The company said two of the two barns are a total loss. A spokesperson for the farm, Brian Birch, said the quick actions of the Grant Park Fire Department help to save at least 250,000 to 300,000 hens. No people were hurt. Michigan-based Konos purchased the farm in 2015. Mussman’s serves several Chicagoland retailers. Despite the fire, Birch says Konos will be able to fulfill all of its contracts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Firefighters from a number of south suburban departments responded, including from Orland Park, Palos and Frankfort. Mussman’s Back Acres’ website says it is a family-owned farm and they also grow their own feed. The company said there should be no supply interruption.)

— Here’s how to pay your property taxes now (if you want) — 3 months early – Rachel Hinton
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/county-county-property-tax-treasurer-2019-pay-early/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The decision to post the bills now is in response to a large number of requests from taxpayers, accountants and tax advisors, the treasurer’s office said in a press release. This is the earliest that first installment payments have been accepted by the county. Treasurer Maria Pappas said making the tax bills available this far in advance makes the process easier and more transparent and gives taxpayers more time to get questions answered — particularly about the federal tax law that went into effect earlier this year. Before that law, all local income and property taxes were deductible from income taxes. Now, there is a $10,000 cap on deductions for state and local taxes. “If they want to pay now, they can, and if they want to go to an accountant to understand the new Trump law, they can,” Pappas said.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-berrios-family-new-jobs-20181204-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: t didn’t take long for former Cook County Assessor Joseph Berrios’ sister and one of his close friends to land new government jobs, though they did have to take a major pay cut. Carmen Berrios and Victoria LaCalamita started work Monday with the Illinois secretary of state. That office is led by Jesse White, who cut a campaign radio ad for Berrios, the former chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party and an unabashed defender of old-school patronage politics. The secretary of state’s office, which has around 3,700 jobs, has long been known as a patronage haven under both Democrats and Republicans. The two women will each make $37,992 a year as public service supervisors in the Vehicle Services Department, said Dave Druker, White’s spokesman. Druker said the two were hired to fill open positions after going through an application process and were “graded based on experience and training.” Carmen Berrios and LaCalamita both resigned their executive jobs in the assessor’ office last weekend, before newly elected Assessor Fritz Kaegi took over Monday. Carmen Berrios was being paid $126,000 as deputy assessor in charge of tax services and outreach, and LaCalamita was being paid $139,000 as deputy assessor of financial operations.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A federal appeals court has tossed out parts of a law that would punish those who would knowingly encourage immigrants to come to, or remain, in the U.S. illegally. A three-judge panel of the San Francisco-based 9th Circuit concluded the federal law unconstitutionally bans a range of protected speech. The Justice Department prosecuted a San Jose woman who ran an immigration consulting firm, for allegedly helping arrange green cards for those working in the country illegally. The judges concluded the law’s reach was overbroad.)

(THE FREE PART OF THE ARTICLE: The grounds of the Bolingbrook Golf Club melted from white with five-day-old snow back to its former green as day wore on Saturday during the Illinois Republican Party State Central Committeeman meeting, as those inside the Taylor ballroom pondered what went wrong for their party on Nov. 6. FROM THE ARTICLE PER CAPITOL FAX: The main takeaway from the presentation was that Republicans actually did quite well bringing out their own voters. The problem for the GOP, the presenters said, was that the Democrats did much better. Precisely 912,979 more Illinoisans voted on Nov. 6 than did when Rauner was first elected in 2014, the presenters said. Rauner only lost 61,232 votes compared with his vote total in 2014, but Pritzker gained 794,763 more votes than Gov. Pat Quinn received in 2014. It’s this gap, the presenters said, that the GOP should focus on.)

CAPITOL FAX
— As expected, Ives joins call for ILGOP shakeup (DIERSEN: Illinois Republicans anxiously await the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) to publish a report on its December 1, 2018 State Central Committee (SCC) meeting in Bolingbrook. The meeting included reports by IRP Chairman Tim Schneider, IRP National Committeeman Richard Porter, and IRP National Committeewoman Demetra Demonte. IRP SCC members are listed at: https://illinois.gop/who-we-are/officials/. Meeting attendees included Carol Davis, Marianne DeMeritt, Jim Dodge, Diane Evertsen, Jason Helland, Babette Holder, Jeanne Ives, James Marter, Jan Shaw, Ken Shepro, and Allen Skillicorn.)
https://capitolfax.com/2018/12/03/as-expected-ives-joins-call-for-ilgop-shakeup/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Let’s circle back to Hannah Meisel’s report this morning…“We no longer have a governor to lead us, so it’s up to us and it’s up to me to lead this party forward,” [Illinois Republican Party Chairman Tim Schneider] said. “You’re never going to have to fire me. Because if I can’t do this job, I’m going to quit. But I’m not going to quit because we can win and we can achieve victory and we can do great things as an Illinois Republican Party.” It was about then that outgoing State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), who narrowly lost to incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner in the March primary running far to the right of the governor, picked up her belongings and exited the room. “I’ve got better things to do with my time to listen to that,” Ives told The Daily Line when asked why she was leaving the meeting only an hour in. * From the Illinois Conservative Union…Almost one month has passed since the November 6th midterm elections. Many have analyzed the losses suffered by the Republican Party in Illinois. To the base of the Party – Conservatives who stand firmly on the adopted Republican Party platform – the causes are abundantly clear. Party leadership made no attempt to unify the Party, failed to support good candidates and failed to effectively communicate to voters the principles of the Republican Party. Due to this failure of leadership and lack of accepting any responsibility for the losses, Illinois Conservative Union (ICU) calls for Tim Schneider to step down from his position as Chairman. “It’s obvious that some of those in Party leadership are out-of-touch with mainstream grassroots Republicans. The grassroots want leadership to support the Party platform; support candidates approved by the Party base—not those hand-picked by leadership; support and defend the Constitution of the United States and support the policies of the President”, said Babette Holder-Youngberg, Communications Director for ICU. “They [IL GOP leadership] need to know we will work with them and be a force multiplier or we will work around them, but we are the workers in the Party, from every corner of the state,” said Jeanne Ives, Senior Fellow, ICU. The group was founded by the West Suburban Patriots. It has no active political action committee, but it does have a Facebook page with 420 “likes” and several conspiracy theories.)

AMERICAN GREATNESS
— Limousine Liberalism Goes Mainstream – Scott Yenor and Jackson Yenor (DIERSEN: What percent of the voters in your neighborhood, in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, in Illinois, and in America are limousine liberals?)
https://www.amgreatness.com/2018/11/30/limousine-liberalism-goes-mainstream/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The new suburban problem defies the old logic of American politics, where we learned to expect the upwardly mobile to favor the lower taxes, limited government, and local control offered by the Republicans. Instead, the “suburban problem” appears to be limousine liberalism gone mainstream. In the 1970s, limousine liberals forced busing while sending their own kids to tony private schools. They willingly paid high taxes that crippled small business, among other things. Today’s limousine liberals have different policies, but signal their membership with similar hypocrisies. They define themselves by “values” more than by wealth, though they are mostly well off or, at least, better off than most. They bemoan the racism and other phobias in America while pricing the middle class and minorities out of their school districts; they drive SUVs; heat and air condition large mansions while worrying about global warming; they favor amnesty and open borders, benefit from its cheap labor, yet defer the costs elsewhere; they live family life in a pretty traditional way, but they are happy to embrace policies and mores that unwind the family for the less fortunate. Despite high levels of church attendance for themselves and their neighborhood friends, they worry that faithful Christians are sources of misogyny, homophobia, and patriarchal power, and they vote to undermine the role of faith in politics accordingly.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: 8. Highlight the chasm between legal and illegal alien entry into the United States. The Democrats conflate the categories in their lawless attempt to flood America with an unskilled, aggressive, and fairly anti-American underclass. Don’t let them get away with it. 9. Support President Trump. Don’t be swayed by snarky comments regarding his tone and style. He is fighting for you, a citizen. If he loses, you probably will, too. 10. Be proud. BELLEVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
— OUTSTANDING: Activist voices opposition to legal Illinois marijuana sales – AP
https://www.bnd.com/news/state/illinois/article222349210.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An opponent to legal marijuana in Illinois says it will allow white corporate exploitation of minority customers. Chicago activist the Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston on Wednesday called the effort to take over a lucrative illegal market “a gangsta move worthy of Al Capone.” He added “profit is the motive,” in legalizing the drug. Illinois has already decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Livingston was joined in voicing opposition to legal marijuana sales by members of Healthy and Productive Illinois. That is a group that opposes legalization and is supported by Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a national anti-cannabis organization. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation this summer that expands medical marijuana use to people prescribed opioids. The move increased the number of medical marijuana users by more than 46,000 patients. Democrat governor-elect J.B. Pritzker has said he hopes to legalize cannabis soon after he takes office.)

— ILLINOIS PASSES STATE LAW GIVING PENSION BOOST TO ONE CHICAGO ALDERMAN – Vincent Caruso (DIERSEN: My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, I brought with me almost 12 years of Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) credit – almost 9 years that worked for IRS 1971-1980 and almost 3 years that I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969. They were beyond furious that while I worked for the Post Office part-time, I earned full-time CSRS credit. The aforesaid made me eligible for GAO’s $25,000 buyout and early retirement offer in 1993 when I was 45 years old. Overwhelmingly, those who GAO hires have no job-related work experience, let alone experience working for other federal agencies. GAO audits IRS and the Post Office.)

Rauner’s veto of a bill that allows one former firefighter serving as a Chicago alderman to credit his political salary toward a more lucrative fire pension. The pension boost will also apply to future aldermen with a history of fire department work.)

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/11/28/gops-h-2b-expansion-gives-business-unlimited-supply-of-foreign-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican lawmakers are looking to slip the more than doubling of the H-2B visa program into a last-second spending bill that is expected to be passed before the new year. In total, there are roughly 1.5 million foreign workers in U.S. college-graduate jobs, plus at least 300,000 blue-collar or manual labor jobs. Meanwhile, there are five million Americans who are not in the labor force who want a job with more than 500,000 Americans saying they are discouraged by their job prospects. Every year, America’s working and middle class have their wages reduced by an inflow of more than 1.5 million mostly low-skilled foreign workers who are admitted to the country. This importation of illegal and legal foreign workers has left the country’s bottom line of workers with stagnant wages since the 1970s and forces them to compete with foreign workers for blue-collar jobs.)

That’s a pity, says Dan Neil. because this year’s front-engine ZR1 is the most dynamic ’Vette yet – Dan Neil (DIERSEN: I own a 1972. Per Wikipedia “1972 was the last year for chrome bumpers at both front and rear, the vacuum actuated pop-up windshield wiper door, as well as the removable rear window common to all 1968-72 coupes. The key activated anti-theft alarm system became standard. The increasingly popular choice of an automatic transmission was installed in most Corvettes for the first time, with nearly 54 percent so equipped. This year SAE net measurement for horsepower was now utilized (away from the previous SAE gross standard), and was largely responsible for the much lower engine output figures such as the 200 hp (149 kW) rating on the standard 350 cu in (5.7 L) motor.”)

It being a holiday, we even let him park it in the driveway. The ’82 Corvette—the last of the third-generation (C3) design—is perhaps the least-loved model-year of all, due to the fact that these wildly fast-looking cars were so shockingly slow and underpowered. Trapped inside that wasp-waisted fiberglass bod is a 5.7-liter V8 wheezing out a mere 200 hp due to its crude emissions-control plumbing. The 1982 Corvette is that zoologically unlikely thing, a sexy slug.)
