Members of Group A are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors and members of Group B are Trump supporters, Protestant, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

They stress my demographics (Trump supporter, baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (69), non-poor, gun owner, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, federal retiree, childless, pet-less, etc. and that I am not a member of any church, that I do not attend church services, that I do not give money to a church, and that Crete is my hometown) and hint/imply/argue/shout that I am a White supremacist, Nazi, KKK member, hater, racist, sexist, bigot, and even worse things. They stress that I support the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform and in the Illinois Republican Party platform. They stress that I oppose promoting dependency on government, dependency on charity, LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Illinois Supreme Court’s health care ruling will cost city retirees – Fran Spielman (DIERSEN: Who wants your retirement benefits to be cut, if not eliminated? Of course, my critics/opponents want the federal government to cut, if not eliminate its 75% health, dental, and vision insurance subsidy. Currently, for my wife and I, that subsidy is $17,288/year. We pay only $5,763/year for $23,051/year worth of health, dental, and vision insurance. Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois despise, if not hate federal employees and federal retirees. Overwhelmingly, they despise, if not hate wage earners like I was 1964-1997 and other “little people.”)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/illinois-supreme-courts-health-care-ruling-will-cost-city-retirees/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: More than 20,000 city employees and retirees have been dealt a crushing blow that could cost them dearly, but end up saving Chicago taxpayers $130 million a year. In a six-word ruling on Thanksgiving eve, the Illinois Supreme Court refused to hear the retirees’ appeal of a state Appellate Court ruling that essentially upheld Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s now-completed, three-year phase-out of retiree health care coverage and a 55 percent city subsidy for anyone who did not retire by Aug. 23, 1989. Clint Krislov, an attorney representing the retirees, said the decision means those retirees are entitled only to bare-bones protections outlined by lower courts. “For the city, this is a huge benefit. The amount they’re paying is dropped from $137 million a year to between $7 million and $8 million,” Krislov said Monday. “What the [lower courts] have said is that all you get is what’s in the statute. You cannot rely on anything the city tells you unless you can prove that person had authority to bind the city.” Law Department spokesman Bill McCaffrey refused to comment on the ruling while there is “still litigation pending.”)

I should write a book about my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who since 1966 have demonized me, denigrated me, and condemned me as being wealthy. (FROM THE ARTICLE: For the first time, group President James Tobin said a sitting Illinois governor received a score of more than 70 percent. “Gov. [Bruce] Rauner had a score of 92 percent,” Tobin said. “That is an incredibly high score.” Tobin said Rauner’s veto of the income tax hike this summer will help his score in the next survey, which will be out after next year. “But it’s been bad for taxpayers this year because with the income tax being raised by 32 percent, we still remain bankrupt,” Tobin said. Another first in the report for the 99th General Assembly were three state lawmakers getting a perfect score of 100 percent. Those were state Reps. Peter Breen, R-Lombard, Tom Morrison, R-Palatine, and Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton.)

POLITICO
— APRIL 25, 2017 FLASHBACK: Capitol Hill correspondents committee declines to credential Breitbart – HADAS GOLD (DIERSEN: All news organizations engage in political advocacy. Illegitimate news organizations deny that they engage in political advocacy. GOPUSA ILLINOIS is a legitimate news organization because it proudly states that advocates for the Republican Party platform.)
https://www.politico.com/blogs/on-media/2017/04/25/capitol-hill-correspondents-committee-breitbart-237577
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Capitol Hill Standing Committee of Correspondents has voted to table Breitbart News’ credential process and declined to extend the organization’s temporary credentials to cover Congress, which expire at the end of May. The committee, which permits media access to the U.S. Capitol only to outlets it considers legitimate news organizations, not political advocacy or other groups, expressed frustration over Breitbart’s inconsistent answers to questions about its masthead and office space, among other problems. Breitbart CEO Larry Solov, in correspondence with the committee since its most recent meeting, asserted that Republican megadonor Rebekah Mercer had no editorial input, that a managing editor who also had a role in an advocacy group was no longer on the masthead, and that the site was having trouble finding office space in part because of security issues. The committee said Breitbart could reapply for credentials if it addresses the concerns. Otherwise, three staff members who currently have temporary credentials (which the site has had for more than two years) will no longer have access after May 31. Breitbart reporters could still attend events on Capitol Hill that are open to the public without the credentials, but the lack of credentials would limit their access in the complex and hamper their ability to get other credentials, such as permanent White House passes. “Breitbart News is unequivocally entitled to permanent Senate Press Gallery credentials and is determined to secure them,” Chad Wilkinson, a Breitbart spokesperson, said in a statement Tuesday. Among the issues raised by the Capitol Hill committee were concerns that members of Breitbart’s masthead, provided last month by Solov, were also employed by the Mercer-funded Government Accountability Institute, which was co-founded by now-White House chief strategist (and former Breitbart chairman) Steve Bannon. The GAI and the work and advocacy it does would not be in line with the committee’s guidelines for credentialing. In a letter to the committee, Solov said that although Managing Editor Wynton Hall was listed on the masthead as of last month, he actually resigned in February and the position “has remained vacant since then.” “We have fully and fairly cooperated with your inquiries in good faith and believe that we have met and responded to the concerns you have raised,” Solov wrote. Breitbart “is an editorially independent news organization and is entitled to and deserves issuance of its permanent Senate Press Gallery credentials.” The committee also noted that Bannon’s Office of Government Ethics financial disclosure had a different date for his separation from Breitbart than what Solov had indicated in their last meeting. Solov has asserted that Breitbart is completely editorially independent, without influence from Bannon or Mercer. But the committee expressed some doubts. “I don’t know how we get Breitbart to prove that Bannon isn’t picking up the phone and talking to them,” said standing committee chairman Billy House, a reporter with Bloomberg News. Last month, the committee, composed of five journalists, also expressed frustration that Breitbart may have misled them on where the site’s offices are located. A Capitol Hill townhouse, known as the “Breitbart Embassy,” had been provided as the address of the company’s Washington office, and the committee was told that Breitbart was leasing the space as a “mixed use” place for both corporate housing (often where Bannon stayed), events and office space. But the committee last month noted that the townhouse is not technically zoned for commercial use and that the owner of the house filed taxes as the sole occupant, meaning that a commercial lease would not even be legally possible. (Most Breitbart writers work remotely.) Solov told the committee that Breitbart has yet to find a new office space and likely would not for some time, partly because of security issues. “I still want to give them the benefit of doubt on these things, that it’s misunderstandings or confusion [instead of] something more nefarious, but we still have these office space issues,” said committee secretary Joseph Morton, who works for the Omaha World-Herald. “The whole thing suggests to me that they’re just not ready for a credential.” In another letter to the committee, sent two days ago, Solov argued that individual members of Breitbart would and should qualify for credentials. But the committee said it doesn’t credential individuals but instead looks at the entire organization and leadership. Solov also insinuated in the letter that there are other organizations that deserve the same scrutiny Breitbart is getting. “Without limitation, is it the Standing Committee’s position that a news organization cannot be credentialed if it employs any editor and/or reporter who is also employed by or affiliated with any advocacy group or non-profit?” he asked. “Of course, we respectfully assert that any such rules, standards and/or criteria must be reasonable and realistic, and transparent — and applied equally and fairly to all news organizations.” During the meeting on Tuesday, the committee said it would happily look into any credentialed reporter and potentially revoke their access if they were found to also be employed or affiliated with an advocacy or nonprofit group. “This is not content driven, we aren’t singling out Breitbart either for extra scrutiny or special treatment,” House said. “This is our job as a board, and these rules have been in place long before any of us came to the board. Our job is to do the best we can and see whether the information they’ve provided meshes with the requirements.”)

If my Democrat GAO superiors had not succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old, I might still be a GAO employee and paying 7% of my salary into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) instead of the CSRS pension paying me a pension. Since 1997, in today’s dollars, I have had $1,454,723 less dollars to go on trips, that is, $72,135 less a year, $6,011 less a month, $1,403 less a week, and $200 less a day. If my Democrat GAO superiors had not succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old, I might still be a GAO employee and paying 7% of my salary into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) instead of the CSRS pension paying me a pension. http://www.newsweek.com/rex-tillerson-diversity-state-department-foreign-service-722653
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Rex Tillerson is ousting many of the State Department’s high-ranking women diplomats and diplomats of color. On Friday, the New York Times revealed how Tillerson’s State Department is pushing out scores of career diplomats from the agency, offering them buyouts and early retirement in the hopes of getting them out the door. “Among those fired or sidelined were most of the top African-American and Latino diplomats, as well as many women, difficult losses in a department that has long struggled with diversity,” reported the Times. The drastic reduction in senior staff is part of Tillerson’s plan to slash the State Department’s expenses by 31 percent. Former officials warn that Tillerson is worsening America’s image abroad and compromising the country’s foreign policy agenda. “These people either do not believe the U.S. should be a world leader or they’re utterly incompetent,” former ambassador to Qatar Dana Shell Smith, who retired from the service in June, told the Times. Tillerson has put a stop to most hiring at the State Department and hopes to push out some 2,000 career diplomats by this time next year, according to the Times. Tillerson plans on doing so by arbitrarily denying posts and assignments to certain diplomats, as well as offering $25,000 contract buyouts for many of the agency’s senior staff. His aides have also simply fired many diplomats whose vision does not align with that of the Secretary of State. Senior non-male and non-white diplomats have been among those targeted by Tillerson. The State Department’s level of diversity has historically been low: In 2016, 5.4 percent of career diplomats were black, 6.9 percent were Asian, and 5.6 percent Hispanic, according to Foreign Policy. The Obama administration made an effort to increase the number of diplomats of color in order to create a Foreign Service that “looked more like America.” But Tillerson’s plans are much different. Instead of recruiting a more diverse pool of talent, the State Department is in the process of substantially reducing its staff, all but ending the drive to diversify the agency.)

In a statement, Mayor Rahm Emanuel contended that complying with conditions for the $3.1 million grant would force the city to work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials and end its status as a sanctuary city. http://qctimes.com/opinion/letters/letter-middle-class-seniors-lose-in-tax-reform/article_68a3c5cc-f95b-5bfa-90bf-5517df1ebd78.html
(FROM THE LETTER: If you are retired, own your home, have a decent retirement income, and itemize your federal taxes, get ready to pay more to support the tax reform bills being debated in Congress. It is obvious that for many, particularly for retired seniors, these proposals will result in a considerable tax increase for those who can least afford it. If you’ve been frugal, don’t have a mortgage, have no dependent children, and itemize your federal income taxes, you can expect your tax bill to increase. The math is simple. Taking away the ability to deduct Iowa income taxes, property taxes, and losing the personal exemptions may very well result in significant tax increases of $1,200 a year or more. An additional $1.5 trillion added to the national debt has to be paid for. You can expect that an all-out effort to cut social programs such as Medicare will be launched to the detriment of retired couples. My wife and I believe in giving back to the community and donate regularly to charitable organizations. We can partially alleviate this increase in federal taxes by no longer supporting organizations that do so much good in our community. Make no mistake, while this may be a boon to corporations and the very wealthy, it is not a “great gift” to many middle-class seniors who have worked hard and have been fiscally responsible to provide a decent retirement. I encourage everyone to do the math and determine if this is really such a great gift.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thanksgiving is all about food and football for a lot of us. But it’s also about being grateful. Here are six reasons to reflect and be thankful for what you’ve got tomorrow. And why you should try to do it every day, not just on Thanksgiving . . .It makes you more patient. A study last year gave people the option of getting a small amount of money immediately, or MORE money at a later date. The one’s who’d shown more gratitude in earlier tests were more likely to wait for the bigger payout. It’s good for relationships. A 2010 study found taking time to be grateful toward your partner makes you more connected, and boosts your overall satisfaction as a couple. You take better care of yourself. A study in 2013 showed that when you’re grateful, you’re also more likely to exercise, eat healthy, and go to the doctor on a regular basis. It can help you sleep. A 2009 study found a connection between gratitude and sleeping well. Possibly because it makes you more positive, which relaxes your nervous system. And you don’t lie in bed worrying so much. It gives you more willpower to make better decisions. It even works with food. For example, if you eat dinner tomorrow and then write a list of things you’re thankful for, you’ll be less likely to go back for seconds. It makes you happier. There’s something called the “Three Good Things” exercise, where you have to think of three good things that happened each day. Studies have shown it can help with depression, and boost your overall happiness.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative activist Peter LaBarbera said the Tillerson transgender day statement was a “huge strategic and policy error.” “What’s wrong with these people?” he asked. “This is so bizarre. What do they hope to gain?” LaBarbera, president of Americans for the Truth About Homosexuality, criticized any maintenance of the previous administration’s overseas activism in regard the LGBT agenda, something not necessarily appreciated by many foreign countries. “This is typical of what people resented all over the world under Obama,” he said. “You are siding with homosexual advocacy, which is opposed all over the world.” “Other countries don’t share our recognition and even celebration of immorality,” continued LaBarbera. He concurred that support for so-called gay rights isn’t necessarily synonymous with human rights, and in fact often means taking away rights from those who aren’t on board with gay marriage. He pointed to the various U.S. small business owners who have been sued or otherwise persecuted for declining to take part in homosexual weddings. “You can respect and defend and celebrate human rights without celebrating LGBT identities and activism,” LaBarbera said. “We know that homosexual activists are very aggressive overseas, and for the U.S. to some on board with this as just another human right is ridiculous.” “We would have thought that these official acknowledgments would have ended with the Obama administration,” he continued, “and the fact that they are continuing under Trump is deeply troubling.”)

My and my wife’s 2016 federal income tax return shows that we had $30,890 in itemized deductions. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaking of the graduated income tax, the Gov. Rauner-backed state Republican Party is warning that taxes would go up on more people than just those with large incomes if Democratic governor candidate J.B. Pritzker is elected. But Pritzker aides said he’s focused on getting a graduated income tax to replace the state’s current flat rate and also will look for other revenue-raising concepts that wouldn’t hike taxes on the middle class. The back and forth was the result of Pritzker’s appearance earlier in the week before the Crain’s Chicago Business Editorial Board. The billionaire entrepreneur and investor said he was unsure if new revenue from a graduated income tax that couldn’t be implemented until 2020 at the earliest would be sufficient for the state’s budget needs, including for education. The state GOP said: “Pritzker continues to mirror his patron (Democratic House Speaker) Mike Madigan when it comes to taxes, promoting even higher taxes despite Madigan’s 32 percent tax hike on Illinois families earlier this year.” But Pritzker’s camp said, “J.B. does not believe we should raise taxes on middle-class families, period.” Along with a graduated income tax, the campaign said Pritzker was “committed to finding budget solutions, like legalizing and taxing marijuana.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Operating Engineers Union Local 150 is making good on its threat to back a Republican primary opponent against House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. The union local’s president, Jim Sweeney, told me he had about a dozen members in Durkin’s district passing nominating petitions for Burr Ridge Mayor Mickey Straub a couple of weekends ago. Straub is running against Durkin as a Republican. Sweeney said he expected to double that number the following weekend. Challenging a legislative leader in a primary is just not done. But these are not normal times. Local 150 led the fight against Bruce Rauner in the 2014 Republican primary and then backed a Libertarian Party candidate against him that fall. The union’s leadership has fumed as Rauner has pushed his anti-union agenda, and now wants some payback on Durkin for helping to kill their bill to ban the creation of “right to work” zones by local governments. The governor vetoed the bill and the union tried twice to override Rauner without success, mainly because Durkin was able to keep his caucus together. Since the union blames Durkin they’ll ally themselves with anybody, including Republican activist Dan Proft, if they have to. Proft is backing Straub against Durkin, who he claims isn’t fit to be Leader. But Proft is not exactly known for being a big union supporter. In fact, according to the Daily Law Bulletin, Proft co-founded the Liberty Justice Center, which, irony of ironies, is representing Lincolnshire against a lawsuit backed by Local 150 over the village’s creation of a local right to work zone — the very event that Local 150’s vetoed bill tried to outlaw. Don’t even try to wrap your mind around all that. You’ll go nuts. This fight is beyond ideology. Sweeney and Proft have a common cause — messing with Durkin — and they’re sticking with that.)

Better have a lot of cash. – Robert Powell (DIERSEN: I should write a book about how being forced to take early retirement dramatically lowers your standard of living. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would love it. They have always been overjoyed a) that my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980; b) that my Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974; and c) that my Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

DUPAGE POLICY JOURNAL
— Ives heads to Downers Grove for a powerhouse fundraiser – Hoang Tran (DIERSEN: Sadly, there will be no GOPUSA ILLINOIS report on this event like there was for Ive’s October 5, 2017 event (see above). Since 2000, I have attended many such events in my roles as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor and as a DuPage County Milton Township Republican Precinct Committeeman, and previously, as a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman (2005-2012) and as an Illinois Center Right Coalition Steering Committee member (2003-2007). Spokespersons for the event hosts talked and acted like had never heard of me or of my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. I had left a message with Ive’s House campaign that I wanted to attend the event and to let me know if there was any problem, but I learned after the event that the message did not get through. They stressed that the event was “closed to the media” and that the event hosts did not want any members of the news media at the event. Notwithstanding my appeals, spokespersons for the event hosts would not allow me to speak with any of the event hosts and succeeded in evicting me from the event. When I arrived early at the event, I learned that I had not been invited to attend a press conference that was in progress. I was offered the opportunity to attend the press conference and to ask Ives questions, but that was not why I was there. I was there to get information to post a report on the event similar to what I did for her October 5, 2017 event (see above). I stressed that my “attendees included” lists in such reports has always been limited to Republican elected officials, candidates, and party leaders, but that did not change their minds. At least my trip to the event was not a complete waste of my time. I got to meet Rich Morthland and I brought in a notarized petition for Ives. Previously, I had provided Ives with three notarized petitions for her House race. I might have been allowed to attend the event if had if I had contributed $1,000 to her campaign or if I had brought in petitions containing 200 signatures, but probably not because I am a member of the news media. GOPUSA ILLINOIS email subscriptions are worth at least $1,000/year and I hope that the Ives campaign reads the emails. Needless-to-say my nasty critics/opponents, their nasty operatives, and their nasty dupes are “rolling in the isles” with laughter because since 2000, they have shouted that I am NOT a member of the news media and that my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are worthless.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511273902-ives-heads-to-downers-grove-for-a-powerhouse-fundraiser
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Continuing her tour of Illinois, Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) is stopping in Downers Grove on Monday night to attend a private campaign fundraiser being hosted by several influential powerhouses. Ives has been campaigning rigorously for a run at the 2018 gubernatorial election, petitioning to challenge incumbent Gov. Bruce Rauner, whom she believed has failed as a Republican leader after he went against the party on important measures such as taxpayer funded abortions and property tax reform. “He has basically discredited himself as a Republican,” Ives said in an interview on “Chicago Tonight” on WTTW. “He’s signed into law very extreme measures. The man who said he had no social agenda ended up having only a social agenda.” The hosts of the Downers Grove fundraiser include Vince Kolber, Ed Bachrach, Virginia McCaskey and Gary Rabine. Kolber is an entrepreneur and civic leader and was a candidate for the 5th Congressional District in 2016. Bachrach is the former chairman and CEO of Bachrach Clothing Inc., a national retail chain of men’s clothing stores. McCaskey is the matriarch of the Chicago Bears NFL team. Rabine is the CEO and founder of the Rabine Group, which is involved in asphalt and parking lot development. The people of Illinois deserves another option for governor, Ives contended. “We’re traveling the state to let people know that they have a real option in the governor’s race,” Ives told Rock Island Today. “They feel betrayed by both Gov. Rauner and the longtime political ruling class in Springfield. Places like Rock Island and like Decatur have become the forgotten places in Illinois by the Chicago Democrats who have run this state into the ground. This campaign is committed to helping every Illinoisan and their family succeed.” The campaign has previously visited Decatur, Rock Island County, the Quad Cities area, Troy, Glen Carbon and Springfield.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The editors of Crain’s Chicago Business are pulling the plug on our website’s comments section. Since we launched ChicagoBusiness.com more than 20 years ago, we have employed a variety of tools-most recently a discussion platform called Disqus-to facilitate reader commentary. Inevitably, however, the trolls leave their trails of slime before we know it. Simply put, we do not have the personnel to manage this commentary, to keep it civil and fair and to halt the back and forth before it devolves into invective, name-calling and, in too many cases, outright hate speech. We’d rather not play host to these often anonymous commenters. They drive out more civil readers and potential commenters. They sully our content, our brand and our sponsors. So, to borrow a phrase, we’re draining the swamp.)

— Extending Federal Employee Probation to Two Years? – Ralph R. Nevertheless, they did everything that they could to get rid of me. GAO audits IRS. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They gave me unfair performance expectations and unfair performance appraisals. They assigned me to work for, to work with, and to supervise the office’s most problematic employees. And even worse things. In my defense, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, became a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. In addition, I completed the requirements for a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A former mayor of Poway, a small city in Southern California, wrote a column in August in his local newspaper with this headline: “A gun to my head.” He was upset about how a state law had forced Poway to redo its voting districts so Latinos would have a better chance of winning elections. Reading the piece on his computer 3,000 miles away, Edward Blum knew he had found his newest case. Seeing one of his bêtes noires — racial gerrymandering — at work, Mr. Blum recruited the former mayor, Don Higginson, as a plaintiff, and on Oct. 4 filed a federal lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the California Voting Rights Act. Mr. Blum is not a lawyer. But he is a one-man legal factory with a growing record of finding plaintiffs who match his causes, winning big victories and trying above all to erase racial preferences from American life. Mr. Blum, 65, has orchestrated more than two dozen lawsuits challenging affirmative action practices and voting rights laws across the country. He is behind two of the biggest such cases to reach the Supreme Court: one attacking consideration of race in admissions at the University of Texas, which he lost; the other contesting parts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, widely considered one of this country’s most important pieces of civil rights legislation, which he won. Now, in his most high-profile cause of the moment, he has asserted that Harvard University’s affirmative action policies amount to an illegal quota system that denies high-achieving Asian-American students admission in numbers commensurate with their qualifications. He has already forced Harvard to turn over, under court seal, years of highly sensitive data about demographics, test scores and even some personal essays, and he now has a powerful ally in the Justice Department, which is looking into a similar complaint. Mr. Blum said he was acting on a pure principle — that people should never be judged by the color of their skin.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/what-will-tax-reform-do-for-puppies-1511071482
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As tax reform snakes its way through the legislative process, it’s becoming clear that one critical group could come out behind: dog families. This inequity must be remedied. I suggest Republicans cancel their proposed Child Tax Credit expansion and instead offer a fully refundable Canine Tax Credit worth at least $500 a dog. Congress is preparing to maybe even double the Child Tax Credit. But what about couples who opted for dogs instead of children? Or those who are preparing for parenthood by taking on a cuddly critter for a couple of years? It’s as if the Child Tax Credit’s biggest boosters are stuck in 1997, when Congress first approved the handout. I hate millennials as much as any op-ed writer, but conservatives need their support to keep tax reform viable. And millennials love pets. Forty-four percent see Fluffy as practice for real offspring. Why privilege Child Moms over Dog Moms? No one is dumb enough to believe that small subsidies for having children encourage more births. Imagine telling your other half, “Sweetheart, I’m ready for another child. Let’s just wait until we can deduct an extra $600.” While some finance-conscious Wall Street Journal readers might not find that absurd, America’s declining birth rate suggests few outside our rarefied readership agree. The Child Tax Credit instead exists to transfer wealth to a preferred group (human families) from an undesirable one (childless superconsumers). No doubt a child’s life is infinitely more precious than a dog’s, but a puppy’s owner deserves economic security as much as a human parent. Maybe subsidizing only families with small humans made sense 20 years ago, but preferences change. Republicans must ask themselves: What do we really have to offer a farmer in Fargo with four French Spaniels? Expanding the Child Tax Credit might excite a few Senate staffers or think-tank fundraisers. But today there are about 90 million dogs in the U.S., spread over some 60 million households, according to the American Pet Products Association. Millions more languish in shelters, as economically insecure Americans hesitate to adopt. Two-thirds of pet owners consider their animals “part of the family,” data from Mintel shows. That’s probably why Americans, who spent nearly $67 billion on their pets in 2016, want relief. The Canine Tax Credit would do more than pad the bank accounts of dog owners. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says having a pet can help decrease blood pressure, cholesterol and feelings of loneliness. Perhaps the Congressional Budget Office could work lowered medical costs into its score? If the Canine Tax Credit passes, loyal voters could finally point to a material benefit provided by the GOP. There’s only one problem: Democrats, always eager to one-up Republican giveaways, could counter with a Feline Tax Credit. Maybe they’d include ferrets too, Rudy Giuliani be damned. Democrats could even target the millions of families with turtles, rabbits, horses, lizards and tarantulas. It’s almost as if it’d be easier just to eliminate all the exemptions and credits and cut tax rates accordingly.)

(FROM THE LETTER: Let me try to follow the tortured logic of your editorial of Nov. 15, “Illinois’ giant pacifier tastes like SALT.” I oppose the GOP tax plan because it gives permanent tax breaks to the wealthy and a mixed bag of temporary tax breaks and tax increases to middle-income families. Particularly objectionable to Illinois is the reduction or elimination of the deductibility of state and local taxes (SALT) from federally taxable income. Itemizers in our state under these Republican plans will indeed pay a federal tax on Illinois income taxes paid, as well as sales taxes and property taxes. In brief, the GOP tax plan will have Illinoisans paying a tax on a tax. You defend the elimination of this deduction on federal returns because it lessens the impact of the state and local taxes on our families. You call this deduction “a pacifier.” This “pacifier” is currently worth $24 billion to Illinois families. This is hard-earned money they don’t have to send to Washington. It’s a real break that lessens the impact of state and local taxes on the savings of families in our state.)

— Tax filers in most states claim state and local tax deduction targeted by GOP – AP (DIERSEN: I certainly hope that Bost, Davis, Hultgren, Kinzinger, LaHood, Roskam, and Shimkus will work hard in conference with the Senate to keep all the current itemized deductions and the personal exemption.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20171118/news/311189946/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet estimates by the Tax Policy Center and a nonpartisan congressional analysis say some taxpayers eventually will end up owing more in federal taxes under the GOP plans. The left-leaning Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy said changes to the state and local tax deduction under the House bill would contribute to one of every five taxpayers in the hardest hit states getting a higher tax bill. While most of those states are led by Democrats, Republican-led Georgia and Utah, and the swing state of Virginia were among them. Democratic lawmakers said that any initial tax relief felt by the middle class or working-class families will eventually disappear. In Georgia, for example, an estimated 9 percent of filers would pay higher taxes in 2018, rising to 22 percent by 2027, according to an analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy. The state and local tax deduction is just one of many provisions targeted for change under legislation that passed the House earlier in the week and is pending in the Senate. The House version would repeal the deduction for income and sales taxes while capping the property tax deduction at $10,000. The Senate bill would end deductions for all state and local taxes. Most tax filers currently take the standard federal deduction of $6,300 per individual or $12,600 for married couples. But some reap larger tax breaks by itemizing deductions for state and local taxes, medical expenses, charitable contributions and interest paid on home mortgages. The state and local tax break is the largest of those. About 44 million taxpayers claimed deductions totaling around $550 billion for state and local taxes paid in 2015, according to the most recent IRS data. The top 10 states with the highest average state and local tax deductions all voted for Democrat Hillary Clinton in last year’s election. New York led the way with an average state and local tax deduction of more than $22,000, followed by Connecticut, California, New Jersey and Massachusetts. But when analyzed by the percentage of taxpayers claiming the deduction, several states won by Trump rank in the top third nationally. In reliably Republican Utah, 35 percent of taxpayers claimed the deduction for state and local taxes. That figure was 33 percent in Georgia and 31 percent in Wisconsin. Thirty-five states had at least one-quarter of their taxpayers claim the deduction. Because of its widespread effect, debate over curtailing the deduction already is creeping into competitive 2018 elections.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Max your state and local taxes One of the hotly debated issues between the House and Senate is whether to cut taxpayers off completely from deducting state and local taxes — everything from property taxes on their homes to state income taxes and sales taxes. Depending on the final arrangement, you may no longer get to deduct these after 2017, although the House preserves the property tax deduction up to $10,000. State and local taxes can be substantial, so grab as much as you can now. If you have taxes due in January, consider paying in December to maximize your 2017 deduction, Luscombe said. Just avoid tinkering too much to maximize deductions in 2017. That might bring about the alternative minimum tax, an additional tax for some people that could be lifted by Congress in 2018, but still applies in 2017. Push 2018 tax items into 2017 After this year, many people may be better off taking the proposed higher standard deduction of $24,400 for couples or $12,000 for individuals. As a result, Luscombe suggested maximizing itemized deductions in 2017. While the charitable deduction may not go away, in the future you may find no value in using it if you no longer itemize. So you should consider giving large donations before the end of 2017. The same goes for the mortgage interest deduction, which may remain on loan amounts up to $500,000 for new home purchases. Taxpayers who think they will not itemize in the future should think about pre-paying January expenses in 2017. The deductions and credits aimed at helping families pay for college are also up for an overhaul and people could lose the right to deduct up to $2,500 of student loan interest a year. So make those payments count as much as possible this year; perhaps pay what you otherwise would let go until after the New Year. Go to the doctor Under a House measure, people with large medical bills would no longer get to deduct some of the expenses on their taxes, although this is not included in the Senate version. Chris Hesse, a Minneapolis certified public accountant with CliftonLarsonAllen, urged people to consider clustering medical costs in 2017 to meet a threshold for deducting expenses once they surpass 10 percent of adjusted gross income. Think: dentists, hearing aids, glasses, nonemergency planned surgery.)

http://hfchronicle.com/article/2017/nov/17/rep-kelly-explains-her-%E2%80%98no%E2%80%99-vote-proposed-tax-reform-plan
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hurting Already Heavily-Taxed Illinoisans Nearly 2 million Illinoisans use the state and local tax (SALT) deduction and deduct more than $25.5 million. Under the GOP’s new tax plan, Illinoisans’ ability to deduct their state and local taxes will be capped at $10,000, well below the amount traditionally deducted by the majority of Illinoisans. In fact, just one-third of the state’s Congressional districts have SALT deduction averages below $10,000, meaning Illinoisans will face double tax thanks to Illinois’ Congressional Republicans. Hurting Illinois Homeowners More than 1.4 million Illinois homeowners use the mortgage interest deduction, keeping more than $11 million in the homeowners’ bank accounts. However, under GOP ‘tax reform,’ this deduction is eliminated. Thanks to the votes of Illinois’ Republican congressmen, more than 1.4 million Illinoisan homeowners will see a tax hike. National media has cited the devastating impact that eliminating this deduction will have on some Illinois communities.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/18/opinion/sunday/republicans-taxes-middle-class.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republican Party seems to have backed itself into a corner on tax policy. After the failure of their health care plan, President Trump and congressional leaders have understandably decided that they need a win. If they somehow fail to pass a tax cut, they will anger their base and their donors and look incompetent to swing voters. But the actual bill that the House passed last week — and the modestly different plan the Senate is considering — is a dreadful piece of policy. It would cause the deficit to soar and, as a result, probably reduce economic growth. It would also raise taxes for millions of middle-class families. And most Americans realize that the tax plan is dreadful. Only 16 percent of adults said they thought the plan would reduce their own taxes, according to a Quinnipiac poll released last week. On the same day the poll came out, several Republican senators criticized the plan, which suggests it may be in jeopardy.)

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/360966-class-warfare-fight-erupts-over-tax-bills
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tensions over class warfare and whether GOP tax plans help the rich over the middle class and poor are building in Congress as Republicans march forward with their legislation. Democrats have been forcefully and repeatedly arguing that the GOP wants to cut taxes for wealthy individuals and corporations at the expense of everyone else. Republicans, annoyed with the attacks, have pushed back, saying their focus is on the middle class. . .Republicans have long accused Democrats of engaging in class warfare for their attacks on the rich. But Democrats have also accused Republicans of attacking the middle class. Brown, who has focused on the working class in his time in the Senate and is up for reelection next year in a state President Trump carried, said on MSNBC in 2011 that when Republicans accuse Democrats of class warfare, Democrats “point out the class warfare [Republicans have] wagged against the middle class.” GOP lawmakers have highlighted elements of their bills that they say benefit the middle class, including the increases in the standard deduction and child tax credit. The Senate’s bill zeros out ObamaCare’s individual mandate penalty for those who don’t have health insurance, and Republicans have also highlighted that most people who pay the penalty make under $50,000. . .But Democrats have argued that the corporate tax cuts are more likely to benefit wealthy shareholders than workers. They have highlighted parts of the bills that seem to be geared to helping the rich, such as their scaling back of the estate tax and the repeal of the alternative minimum tax. They have also put a spotlight on tax breaks benefitting the middle class that would be eliminated. . .Republicans have pointed to data that shows people across the spectrum would win tax cuts from the plan, particularly in the short term, while Democrats have highlighted that millions of low- and middle-income families would see their taxes go up, especially in later years.)

— In towns and cities nationwide, fears of trickle-down effects of federal tax legislation – Renae Merle and Peter Jamison Nov

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It took the city of Pataskala, Ohio, nine ballot measures before its 15,000 residents agreed to a new 1 percent tax to pay for repairs to its crumbling roads and to buy new police cruisers. The mostly rural community was finally won over by a century-old hallmark of the tax code: The $5 million local levy could be deducted from their federal taxes. “There is a severe sensitivity to more taxes here,” said James M. Nicholson, the city’s finance director. “At the end of the day, you get a tax break was the thing that convinced people.” But now, in small towns and thriving cities, in Republican- and Democratic-leaning states, local leaders are warning that the $1.5 trillion tax legislation moving through Congress threatens to undermine their ability to raise money for government services, including police and schools. The Republican measures would eliminate or severely curtail taxpayers’ ability to lower their federal tax bill by deducting the cost of their state and local taxes. Without that offset, local leaders say, taxpayers will begin to seek relief closer to home, potentially making it more difficult to provide basic services.)
