He lost California by over 4 million votes in 2016 and has remained unpopular, and many voters saw an opportunity to send a message to Washington. Walters and Rohrabacher, for example, were closely tied to the president, while Democratic candidates campaigned openly against Trump’s agenda. But demographic changes have also helped Democrats, and in key congressional races they fielded a group of fresh faces, not career politicians. Steel, the GOP committeeman, noted that Democrats raised more money and did a better job registering voters and using social media. The state GOP has debated for years whether the party needs to turn to the political center, or right. As far back as 2007, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warned the party was “dying at the box office” and needed to claim issues usually associated with the Democratic agenda, including climate change and health care reform. The latest setbacks have set off a fresh round of Republican soul-searching. (FROM THE ANNOUNCEMENT: We, the board of the Chicago Headline Club, the largest chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, demand that the White House immediately reinstate the full credentials of CNN reporter Jim Acosta. A free press is a pillar of our democracy. Without a free press, there are no independent agencies to inform the public, expose injustice and hold the powerful to account. Some of the most important reporting comes from those who cover the White House and our nation’s government each day. The president first insulted Mr. Acosta as he asked a question during a news conference. An intern then tried to remove a microphone from Mr. Acosta’s hand to stop him from asking questions. This is clearly confirmed by video, and accounts of other reporters at the press conference. Hours later, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Mr. Acosta’s credentials were being revoked indefinitely, meaning he would no longer have access to cover the White House on behalf of one of the country’s largest cable networks. To justify this outrageous retaliation, Ms. Sanders falsely accused Mr. Acosta of accosting the intern. Hours later, she followed up by propagating a doctored video, edited to make it appear as though he assaulted the young woman. This is disgraceful. Ms. Sanders, in announcing the revocation of Mr. Acosta’s credentials, said the administration appreciates and welcomes tough questions from journalists. This is comically absurd and there is only evidence to the contrary. This administration has routinely disparaged free press and belittled its value, it has demeaned strong news coverage, and has attacked reporters who dare set the record straight in the face of lies. It was bad enough to accuse Mr. Acosta of doing something he obviously did not do. That the White House would then attempt to support the lie by disseminating an altered video is especially detestable and shows the lengths to which this administration will go to wage war against the truth. Jim Acosta did nothing wrong. He is a devoted journalist who did exactly what his colleagues, bosses and the public expect of a reporter in his position: He questioned the leader of our country and demanded answers. He sought accountability. The banishment of Mr. Acosta from the White House is unprecedented in this country. Sadly, it is not an unfamiliar tactic. Public officials and elected leaders at all levels of government routinely refuse to speak to reporters they deem unfriendly and block access to entire news outlets. We saw this occur on Election Day when Rep. Steve King of Iowa barred the Des Moines Register from covering his election night event, refusing to credential any of their reporters. This treatment of journalists is inexcusable whether they cover the White House or a local school board. More importantly, a public official rebuffing accountability for their actions is a disservice to the people they are supposed to serve. No public official should be above scrutiny. And no journalist in this country should be punished for doing their job. If the White House truly values the work of the press, as Ms. Sanders indicated in her statement, there is an obvious way to demonstrate that: restore Jim Acosta’s credentials and end its vicious attacks on journalists.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, who must reclaim the GOP base to win re-election, showed up in the audience at President Donald Trump’s southern Illinois rally on Saturday, though Trump never mentioned the governor in his remarks nor invited him to the stage. If it was a deliberate snub, it was a remarkable rebuff — a Republican president ignoring a GOP governor who is struggling to win a second term against Democrat J.B. Pritzker. Or Rauner’s team may have said it’s OK to ignore him as he continues to try to have it both ways when it comes to Trump. While avoiding Rauner, Trump did give a big boost to three of the four Republican Illinois House members facing tough re-election races: Reps. Mike Bost, Rodney Davis and, in a big surprise, Randy Hultgren. Hultgren traveled more than 300 miles from his Chicago area district to Murphysboro to plant his flag with the president in the unannounced appearance. I heard that Rauner’s team was trying to arrange a last minute private meeting with Trump, a move calculated to try to appease the GOP base he has alienated so much that he barely won re-nomination in the March Illinois GOP primary. I’m not sure that private meeting ever took place. I did see Rauner pictured in the crowd standing next to Republican National Committee Finance Chair Todd Ricketts, who did visit with Trump at the rally. It’s hard to see how this fence straddling will work well for Rauner. While he avoided being caught in the same camera frame as Trump — which would depress his support among the independents and moderate Republicans he needs — he still was not embraced by Trump. Trump is very popular with the segments of the Republican base Rauner knows he needs. Rauner on Saturday was trying to catch a ride on Trump’s coat tails without paying much of a price. The rally was billed as a boost for Bost. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., in a fight with Democratic nominee Seat Casten in the 6th district, was the only one of the four GOP targets who did not attend the Trump rally, which made sense since his re-election depends on wooing voters who are turned off by Trump’s divisive politics and scorched rhetoric. Hultgren is in a tight race with Democratic nominee Lauren Underwood in the 14th congressional district, in prior years safe GOP turf. Hultgren needs Trump’s help to turn out Republicans who otherwise sit out mid-terms. Hultgren may have decided to journey to Murphysboro, near Carbondale, because former Vice President Joe Biden headlines a rally for Underwood on Wednesday at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles, where blues singer Keb’ Mo’ will also perform. “We need your vote,” Hultgren said to the crowd, though he was hundreds of miles away from his voters. Bost is facing a strong challenge for the 12th district seat from Democrat Brendan Kelly, the St. Clair County State’s Attorney. Davis is running against Democrat contender BetsyDirksen Londrigan in the 13th district, anchored in central Illinois.)
