BRUCE RAUNER’s administration in response — got prominent play at a campaign stop in Springfield last week by Democratic governor candidate J.B. PRITZKER. BRAD SCHAIVE, business manager of Laborers Local 477, helped introduce Pritzker when the candidate and his running mate, state Rep. JULIANA STRATTON, D-Chicago, stopped Friday at the local’s headquarters in the capital city as part of a bus tour. While an elected official should have strength and leadership, Schaive said, “it’s hard to have any of those other qualities unless you have compassion.” Schaive recalled that his wife, MELISSA, was among eight people the Rauner administration laid off from IDOT in July. The administration said at the time there was a “lack of work” for those let go, and a spokeswoman also said the action was “cleaning up past hiring mistakes and personnel practices.” Melissa Schaive had been with the state since 2003 and made $73,860 annually as an information technology procurement analyst. She also got a liver transplant last year and still needs a kidney transplant. Lawyers for Teamsters local 916 are working to overturn the termination. Kyle McCarter, R-Lebanon, noted that President Donald Trump easily won the 15th Congressional District — and many parts of Illinois outside Chicago — with many voters choosing Trump for his immigration policy. “Yet what the governor has done is support codifying illegal immigration,” McCarter said. “This means a lot to people. Trust is a hard thing to re-establish once you’ve lost it.” . . . McCarter said he was one of three Republican senators who endorsed Rauner during the 2014 primary. “I made the case with social conservatives that look to me for leadership that what had been done in the past decade was fiscally immoral,” McCarter said. “Therefore, we counted on him to right the ship, fiscally, (and) make it better for families. Rosanna Pulido of Springfield hasn’t been a fan of Rauner, who she said has “never been a Republican.” She has been deeply involved in trying to stop illegal immigration including being a “minuteman” on the Arizona-Mexico border in 2005. She is also traveling to Washington, D.C., this week to with “a group of people who have had loved ones killed by illegal aliens” to push legislation to cut off federal funds going to sanctuary cities or states. She said victim family members “tried several times” to contact Rauner through his office, and “each time they were turned away.” Kukowski’s response did not address questions about Pulido’s assertion about the attempts to set up a meeting. “A lot of conservative Republicans are looking for a new home,” said Pulido, who unsuccessfully ran for the U.S. House in the 5th Congressional District in 2010.”)

Former President Barack Obama launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in 2012 for people who have been in the U.S. since 2007, were younger than 16 at the time of their arrival and were younger than 31 as of 2012. Those enrolled can legally drive and work, but they must reapply every two years. They are considered a low priority for immigration enforcement, though they are not protected from deportation. The Trump administration has until Tuesday to eliminate the program or face legal action from a group of Republican state lawmakers. Illinois has the nation’s fourth-largest population of DACA recipients — the highest share in the Midwest. At least 42,376 Illinoisans have been approved since March 31, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Current students, high school or GED course graduates and veterans are eligible for the program. They must be at least 15 to apply, unless they’re in removal proceedings or have a final removal or voluntary departure order.
