LaBarbera said he wouldn’t call himself a Trump supporter — he voted for Ted Cruz in the primary. But it was Hillary Clinton’s stance on abortion and homosexuality that was in opposition to his faith, he said. “Hillary Clinton would have threatened liberty itself,” he said. “People have to stand by what they believe.” He also said Trump was brilliant tapping into the anger and frustration of “the forgotten man” and “average Joe.” “They felt government did not speak for them. Viewer discretion is advised.** Police are investigating the beating of a man in the North Lawndale neighborhood by a group who yelled that the victim “voted for Trump.”  Police said it was unclear what motivated the attack, the day after Donald Trump won the presidential election, saying it started after a traffic altercation. It was not immediately clear if the man was a Trump supporter. Video of the attack was posted Wednesday on YouTube. It shows a man being beaten by a group of people while his car sits in the middle of an intersection. A person recording the video can be heard saying, “You voted Trump. You voted Trump.”  The Chicago Tribune reports, that the man, David Wilcox, said he voted for Trump but no one in the crowd would have known. Police said a 50-year-old man was attacked and beaten by three males and two females at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and Kedzie Avenue. One of the attackers stole his car and fled the scene, according to police. In the video, the victim appeared to try to get back into his car as he was being attacked, and tried to pull one of the assailants out of his car. Other attackers continued to the beat him, and appeared to steal some belongings that fell out of his hands and pockets. A longer version of the video was posted on Twitter, with profanity-laden music laid over the audio. In that longer version, the victim is seen being dragged off, while hanging on to the driver’s side of the car.   “This is unacceptable and must be condemned by everybody,” said Rev. Michael Pfleger, in response to the video. “Violence is never an acceptable response. Emotions are raw coming out of this election, but frustration, anger and despair do not give permission to be violent.” Chicago police said the victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition. No one was in custody Thursday morning. Area North detectives were investigating.)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: It’s hard not to feel a little sympathy for David Suker: He’s severely unhappy sitting around and even napping in libraries and lounges to “earn” his $94,000 salary. On the other hand, he’s free to find a real job — and the city Department of Education has every right to keep him out of the classroom. As Susan Edelman reported in Sunday’s Post, Suker is trying for a third answer — by suing to return to teaching. DOE actually tried to fire him, but the courts — and the United Federation of Teachers contract — prevented his termination. (He did have to pay a $7,000 fine.) Yet DOE was still unwilling to put him back in the classroom — whether because of his newsmaking confrontations with police as an Occupy Wall Street protester, or other information not made public. So it stuck him in the Absent Teacher Reserve, along with more than 1,300 other DOE staffers, at least 200 of them teachers — earning full pay and benefits but ineligible for overtime. A few ATR-dwellers actually make it back to real work — for example, teachers who take longer than usual to find placement at new schools after their old ones close. Yet most are simply warehoused because they can’t be fired, and no one’s willing to risk putting them in contact with kids. The system set up under the UFT contract makes it near-impossible to fire even serial gropers and other pervs. The real outrage is that they all remain on salary, courtesy of the taxpayers.)

In small fine print is a notice that the mailing was paid for by the “Progressive Turnout Project” and not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. However, if one turns to the website of the group, http://www.turnoutpac.org/, one can see in bold headlines “Connecting with voters and getting Democrats to the polls.” At the bottom of the first page is a local P.O. Box address, leading one to think (wrongly) that the group is truly a local, grassroots effort-as they pitch themselves to be. That would be, naturally, a lie. Clicking through the website will show no names of who is running and funding this project, but one will see the races they are targeting across the country. They are in battleground districts with a substantial number of Democrats. Every single politician this group is targeting is a Republican. This “grassroots group” is no such thing and though it may boast it is some sort of civic group that is not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee, it is in reality an AstroTurf (fake grassroots) group, funded by the Democratic Party or its allies to increase the turnout of people who will likely vote Democratic. My friend who shared the mailing with me is not registered as a Democrat or Republican. I am registered as a Republican and did not get the mailing. Clearly the mailing was geared towards increasing the number of votes for the Democrat running in my district, since it is likely that people who are not registered as Republicans would be inclined to vote Democratic. As mentioned above, this district is very mixed between Republicans and Democrats. If you exclude from the mailings registered Republicans, the group increases the odds that their mailings can intimidate people into going to the polls and voting Democratic.  But what is most offensive is the intimidation and threat of exposure (blackmail?) to one’s friends, family and neighbors that you chose not to vote. This tactic is underhanded and repugnant-something that should not surprise since the Democratic Party, as Kimberly Strassel has written in her outstanding book, “The Intimidation Game” and as Project Veritas Action has shown with its videos, specialize in intimidation.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: German Americans are the largest ancestry group in the United States. Some 46 million Americans, comprising 14 percent of the population, claim German roots. Germans have been part of American history almost from the start. The first German immigrants settled in rural Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Many were Protestants who had made the journey to the New World from predominantly Catholic parts of Central Europe. A second, larger immigration wave would come in the nineteenth century, when around seven million Germans arrived, doubling the population of the United States at the time. Many of them established farms in the Midwest, leading to a heavy concentration of German Americans in states like Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas. Impact  German Protestants and Jews tended to vote Republican; most Catholics were Democrats. What united them was opposition to slavery and Prohibition and in general a mistrust of Southern populists and New England puritans alike. Germans played an important role in the early American labor and socialist movements, which were strongest in those Midwestern states that had large German minorities. Milwaukee, for example, was the only major city in America with socialist mayors for a long time. German contributions to American culture include beer, hot dogs, Christmas trees and kindergarten (literally, “garden for children”). Companies such as Boeing, Goldman Sachs, Heinz, Kraft Foods, Lehman Brothers and Levi’s were all started by Germans. Prejudice  There had been little prejudice against German until the United States entered World War I on the Allied side in 1917. Former president Theodore Roosevelt denounced “hyphenated Americanism”. Anti-German bigotry became widespread. A German minister was tarred and feathered in Minnesota after he was overheard praying in his native language with a dying woman. A man suspected of spying for the Germans was lynched in Collinsville, Illinois. The Justice Department was no help. It drew up a list of all German aliens in the country, counting some 480,000. More than 4,000 of them were incarcerated until the hostilities in Europe ended a year later. Ordinary Germans responded by speaking English in public and anglicizing their names: Koenig became King, Müller became Miller, Schmidt became Smith. The German American experience during the Second World War was mixed. Nearly 11,000 German citizens were interned and some 300,000 German-born residents were restricted in their travel and property rights. But President Franklin D. Roosevelt — Theodore’s nephew — also sought out German Americans for top war posts, including General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who spearheaded the Allied war effort in Europe, and Admiral Chester Nimitz, who was the American naval commander in the Pacific. German speakers were recruited as translators and spies. Very few sympathized with the Nazis. Assimilation  Despite their numerical preponderance, German Americans have been something of a silent majority throughout American history. Partly that’s because they themselves deemphasized their Germanness in the first half of the twentieth century. Barely any German speakers remain. Many first-generation German immigrants were also poor, uneducated farmers, who spread out across the Midwest, unlike, say, more middle-class Irishmen and Italians, many of whom settled in the big cities of the Northeast where they could more easily become a political force. Whether it is in spite or because of this process of assimilation, German Americans now do better than most ethnicities on many metrics. They are more likely to have college degrees and less likely to be unemployed. Their median household income is 18 percent above the national norm. The company announced Wednesday that it will provide $100 a month for up to 36 months to full-time sales associates and “high potential” and “top performing” employees who are paying off student loans or in the process of earning a degree. With unemployment low, many companies are struggling to pull in and retain dedicated young workers with good skills, and increasingly they are eyeing help with student loans as a means to stand out as an employer, said Gary Kushner, president of Kushner & Co. a Michigan-based benefits consulting firm. While large companies such as Fidelity Investments and PriceWaterhouseCoopers have received national attention for providing the new benefit, small and medium-size companies are especially interested in it as a retention tool, he said. “If you are fortunate enough to get skills and the right cultural fit, you want to hold onto the person as long as you can,” said Kushner. He noted that retailers especially face a struggle. About 4 percent of employers have been offering student loan repayment help this year, according to a Society for Human Resource Management survey of employers. Americans have about $1.2 trillion in student loan debt and about half of those with loans have monthly payments that are excessive based on their incomes, according to a study by the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Academic research has shown the pressure of college loans is causing some millennials to delay marriage, children and home purchases. . .The company also is offering a tuition reimbursement program for some employees who pursue education while working and gives 30 college scholarships of $3,000 each to children of employees. Helping employees pursue education while on the job is not a new benefit. In contrast to the new perk aimed at new workers with student loans, the old programs were designed to increase skills of existing employees. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, tuition reimbursement programs for employees who go to undergraduate or master’s programs have been cut back in recent years. In 2012, 58 percent of employers were offering the benefit to employees going to graduate school. In 2016, that had dropped to 52 percent. For undergraduate tuition, 61 percent were giving benefits in 2012, but that had dropped to 55 percent in 2016. Tanya Mulvey, researcher for the human resources group, said that employers have been looking for ways to cut some benefit costs to make up for the extra cost of health insurance. The average tuition reimbursement per employee per year was $4,442 in 2016, she said. Companies offering tuition reiumbursements can receive a tax deduction.)

Now it’s schismed between (1) the won’t haves, essentially the Millennial generation, which has maximum debt and minimal job opportunities and which views income redistribution as the solution; (2) the entitlement class, which includes retirees and all those who receive some income from some government source; (3) the keep what I haves, primarily the working class, struggling to pay their bills and affected the most by crime, property taxes and neighborhood change; (4) the haves, those families earning more than $100,000, spending more than they make, worth maybe $1 million, and worried about the future; and (5) the wealthy, the infamous top 1 percent, whose net worth is $10 million and up. Of those demographic sectors, only two in 2016 sought to upset the status quo, the Millennials, who embraced Bernie Sanders’ socialism, and the working class, who embraced Donald Trump’s anti-elitist populism. Each was sending the message no more Clintonism, Obamaism, Bushism, elitism, insiderism and favoritism. Yet, on Nov. 8, all of those “isms” will triumph.)

While that represents the official word, based on BLS data, it likely will have little to no impact on the prospects for the January 2017 federal employee raise, which will be 1.6 percent unless political leaders take up the raise issue. The raise in those areas likely will be around 1.4 percent; exact figures are to be set by a late-year executive order formalizing the raise. Locality rates are paid according to where employees work, not where they live, and reflect comparisons of labor market conditions, not cost of living.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trouble didn’t take long to find University of Pittsburgh students who set up a campaign table for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on a campus walkway last week. It started harmlessly enough, depending on your definition, when passers-by yelled things such as, “F*** the white male patriarchy!” at those manning the table across from Hillman Library, the Pitt Maverick reported. Another “student came up to us and made a claim about how Trump wants to get rid of ‘his people,’” sophomore Kirk Breiner added to the Maverick. Then things escalated. A man declaring the table supported a “racist” candidate approached Breiner and another student volunteer Matt Kerlin, grabbed a stack of Trump door-hangers and nearly started a fight, the paper said. Later two students came over to the table, and one swept all the Trump literature to the sidewalk while the other flipped the table upside-down: The culprit then scurried away: “And we’re the violent ones,” one person, presumably a Trump supporter, was heard sarcastically noting on a video of the incident. Sophomore Steven Evanovich shot the clip and contacted campus police, who are investigating, the paper said. “It’s a shame that different opinions are met with such hostility at institutions of higher learning,” Evanovich told the Maverick. “Calling Trump’s rhetoric ‘hate speech’ actually reinforces and encourages the notion that violence against conservative or dissenting students is justified, and my own campus shouldn’t be a place where my friends or I are fearful for having opposing opinions.”)

(FROM THE EDITORIAL: The lip service that the Obama administration pays to veterans about their health care — given excessive waits at Veteran Affairs facilities and suicide hotline delays — extends to hiring them for federal jobs. By law, disabled veterans and those with active-duty service are supposed to get preference in federal hiring. But a government report shows that’s not always the case, specifically when political appointees are considered for plum jobs. “There is a clear bias against veterans,” Darin Selnick, a retired Air Force captain and former Veterans Affairs official, tells The Daily Signal. “They think veterans should start at the bottom like everyone else.” Of course, experience and qualifications are factored for federal job applicants; the law is supposed to prevent political favoritism. But in hiring a quarter of President Obama’s political appointees, federal agencies didn’t follow policies to avoid favoritism, according to the Government Accountability Office. The GAO report sampled 30 federal agencies from January 2010 to October 2015. Never mind proposed changes to hiring policies that would limit veterans’ job preference to a single use. For vets who have secured civilian government jobs, that would eliminate any preference consideration when they apply for higher positions. Our country owes its veterans a debt for their service. Playing fast and loose when it comes to federal job hiring is an intolerable disservice that deserves no place in any administration.)
