(FROM THE ARTICLE: A group of over 250 journalists implored members of the Beltway press corps to “forcefully demonstrate opposition” to President Trump at the ritzy White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday. Trump, 79, is set to attend the swanky dinner for the first time in his presidency. But the group of 250 reporters is demanding that the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) ensure he doesn’t feel welcome. “We believe the White House Correspondents Association should take stronger action by issuing — from the podium — a forceful defense of freedom of the press and condemnation of those who threaten that freedom, followed by a standing toast to the First Amendment,” the letter to members of the WHCA said. “Speak forcefully, in front of the man who seeks to undermine our country’s long tradition of an independent, strong, and free press.” The WHCA, which represents the White House press corps, is organizing the annual dinner and has clashed with Trump repeatedly over the past year. Early last year, the White House press team began meddling in the pool rotation, in which outlets take turns getting special access to the president to share their notes and footage with everyone else. Historically, the WHCA has set the pool rotation. Notably, the White House has left the WHCA in charge of determining outlet seat locations in the press briefing room. Prominent veteran journalists such as former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, infamous for erroneous reporting on President George W. Bush’s military service, and former ABC News anchor Sam Donaldson signed the missive. Groups such as the Society of Professional Journalists, the Coalition for Women in Journalism, the National Association of Black Journalists, the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and more signed it as well. The letter aired a litany of grievances against Trump, such as his defamation suits against various outlets, alleged favoritism toward conservative media, and Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr’s offensive tactics. Another complaint was Trump’s decision to pardon Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol rioters, which the letter claims sends a “message that attacks on the press will be forgiven.” They also noted in the letter that many journalists attending the ritzy dinner on Saturday intend to wear lapel pins or pocket handkerchiefs emblazoned with the words of the First Amendment as a more low-key protest. The call for protests comes amid polling pegging trust in the media at all-time lows, particularly among Republican voters. Last year, Gallup found that only 28% of the public has a great or fair amount of trust in mass media. Last year, the WHCA was pressured to cancel comedian Amber Ruffin, whom it tapped to headline the feted dinner after she publicly called the Trump administration a “bunch of murderers,” and complained about being asked to tone down her material. This year, the WHCA has tapped mentalist Oz Pearlman as the night’s main entertainment instead of a traditional comedian. The last time Trump attended a White House Correspondents’ Dinner was 2011, when then-President Barack Obama mercilessly roasted him for peddling conspiracy theories about Obama’s birth certificate. “Because the Press was extraordinarily bad to me, FAKE NEWS ALL, right from the beginning of my First Term, I boycotted the event, and never went as Honoree,” Trump explained on Truth Social last month. “However, I look forward to being with everyone this year. Hopefully, it will be something very Special.” The Post contacted the WHCA for comment. (FROM THE LETTER: As a mother of six and grandmother to 12 and a product of public school education, I am deeply troubled by the Chicago Board of Education’s recent decision to urge Gov. JB Pritzker to reject federal funding from the Education Freedom Tax Credit that expands school choice for Illinois families. This reckless decision proves that if President Donald Trump and Republicans are for something, Illinois Democrats are against it, even when it helps our children and empowers our families. This commonsense legislation creates new opportunities for scholarships that help make quality education more affordable. It enables parents to choose the school — public, private, charter or otherwise — that best meets their child’s unique needs. No child should be trapped in a failing school simply because of their ZIP code. (FROM THE LETTER: I support food pantries. In fact, I supported food pantries with a portion of my 2025 DuPage County Board member grants, though Loaves and Fishes in Naperville was not one of them. The L&F pantry does good work. It serves a large number of people and is run by caring and intelligent management. However, when L&F sought a $2.5 million grant from DuPage County to expand its facilities, I voted no. DuPage residents make up only 36% to 41% of people served by L&F. Conversely, 42% of the individuals served by L&F are from Kane County, 18% from Will County and 4% from Kendall County. During the last two years, Will and Kane counties combined have contributed slightly under $200,000 total to L&F. As a result, I believe that the other counties should pay a percentage of the $2.5 million that approximates the percentage that their residents benefit from L&F. As stewards of the DuPage County tax dollars, I believe we should have represented the DuPage County taxpayers in this manner. DuPage taxpayers deserve a better return than 36 to 41 cents on the dollar. In an editorial praising the vote to authorize the DuPage grant, the Daily Herald did not publish the facts I relied on to make my decision, only offered the nebulous statement that “a few DuPage board members have said that other counties should help fund the project’s estimated $8 million price tag.” The facts I stated above should have been part of the editorial and considered by the Daily Herald. In the future, both to better educate the public and to have a more informed opinion, the Daily Herald should consult with both sides of the issue and not rely on only one side.)

In today’s dollars, my IRS salary was $56,409/year (GS-7) when I was 22 in 1971, $68,999/year (GS-9) when I was 23, $83,482/year (GS-11) when I was 24, $100,059/year (GS-12) when I was 25, and $113,402/year (GS-12 Step 5) when I was 31. My GAO salary was $89,703/year (GS-9 Step 10) when I was 31 and $118,984/year (GS-13) when I was 32. Ever since then, pressure has increased to hire, retain, and promote those who do not share my demographics. All my coworkers who my Democrat superiors promoted over me were Democrats who had less work experience than I had, had less education, had no professional certifications or fewer than I had, and/or had no professional license like the one I had and/or did not share my demographics.

Were you forced to retire early? Will you be forced to retire early? My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire when I was 49 in 1997. What if I had not succumbed to their threats? Their threats included making my next 6 years until I would be eligible for regular retirement a living hell for me. Their threats included constructively demoting me, giving me adverse transfers, giving me unfair performance expectations, giving me unfair performance appraisals, and continuing to rank me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance. GAO was not unionized. It did not unionize until 2007. In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, I should not have retired. I should have fought to keep my job a) because my critics/opponents have used my being forced to retire early against me so viciously and b) because of the tremendous loss of income that I have suffered and will suffer for the rest of my life.

— Veterans’ Preference. DD: The Democrats who ran GAO in 1980, IRS in 1971, and the Post Office in 1966 hired me because they could not find a qualified Democrat, minority, female, younger person, or veteran who would take the job. All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government, many, most, virtually all, and at times, all of my superiors and supervisors were Democrat veterans. They gave tremendous preference to their Democrat employees who were veterans. They blamed Republicans for America losing the Vietnam War, and they especially blamed Republicans like me who were 1-A for the Vietnam War draft but who avoided it with draft deferments. They were furious that because I avoided the Vietnam War draft, I was able to earn a bachelor’s degree in management when I was 21, earn an MBA when I was 27, pass the CPA examination on my first attempt when I was 30, earn a master’s degree in accounting when I was 31, and pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt and become a licensed CPA when I was 32. They took many big adverse actions against me.
