(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party faces a grim future if significant changes aren’t made soon, according to the committeeman who this past weekend asked state GOP Chairman Tim Schneider to resign. “The Republican voters own the party and the party should be listening to the voters,” Illinois Republican Party 16th Congressional District Rep. John McGlasson told Prairie State Wire during a recent email interview. “If the party continues as it is, there will be little left after 2020.” In his letter read into the record during the Republican State Central Committee’s meeting over the weekend in which McGlasson called for Schneider to resign, he also described what the GOP should be looking for in its next chairman. “Someone able to fulfill the mission of serving the county, township and ward organizations with logistics and training,” McGlasson said in the letter. “To bring the technology of the party up to date and arrange for on-site training to the organizations.” McGlasson’s letter and interview come less than a year after now former Gov. Bruce Rauner allegedly tried to purge him and other Conservatives in the Illinois GOP’s central committee. Last April, McGlasson was re-elected 16th Congressional District State Central Committeeman. Schneider removed McGlasson from the State Central Committee’s executive committee over McGlasson’s support of now former State Rep. Jeanne Ives’ failed primary race against then incumbent Governor Rauner. Despite the consequences he suffered for supporting Ives, McGlasson said he isn’t concerned about any retribution over his call for Schneider to resign. “There is little that they can do to me,” he said. “They already tried to win my seat without success. Being involved in the Illinois Republican Party has been personally expensive and I have never earned a dime from it. Unfortunately, the leaders will consider this a victory and will continue to ignore social conservatives.”)

When Congress made Social Security benefits taxable in 1983, lawmakers didn’t index the tax thresholds to inflation. They “forgot” inflation again when adding a second layer of taxation in 1993. That means the proportion of recipients who have to pay federal income taxes on their benefits keeps increasing. Initially, only 1 in 10 Social Security recipients had to pay any federal tax. Now, it’s over half. Not indexing to inflation is a sneaky way of boosting taxes. Lawmakers can count on growing federal revenue without the politically uncomfortable act of repeatedly voting for those increases. The taxes are based on combined income, which is a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, plus any tax-exempt interest (such as interest on mutual bonds) and half of her Social Security benefit.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: This is a problem for workers at the low end of the wage scale, because inflation — the tendency of the price of just about everything to rise over time — steadily gnaws away at the value of the minimum wage as time passes. The federal minimum was last increased in July 2009, when it was set to $7.25 an hour. It remains nominally at that level today, but in real terms inflation has chipped more than a dollar away from its value: $7.25 in 2009 works out to about $6.19 today. In the past year alone, the minimum wage has lost 14 cents of value, relative to 2009. While that’s bad news for low-end workers, it’s good news for the companies that employ them: an hour of minimum wage labor now costs less, relative to the price of everything else, than it did back in 2009. Sen. YADAV “NICK” NATHWANI of Glen Ellyn was sworn in Nov. 26 after being appointed to the vacancy left with the resignation of former Sen. CHRIS NYBO, R-Elmhurst, who lost the Nov. 6 election to Democrat SUZY GLOWIAK of Western Springs in the 24th Senate District. In addition to filling out Nybo’s term, Nathwani is listed as minority spokesman of the Senate’s financial institutions committee. That committee hasn’t met since May 23. Nathwani will be out of office when Glowiak is sworn in on Jan. 9. Base pay for legislators is $67,836 annually, and committee chairs and minority spokespeople get an extra $10,327 annually. For his 45 days, Nathwani will thus get about $8,360 in base pay and about $1,270 in pay for his committee position. I asked JASON GERWIG, spokesman for Senate GOP Leader BILL BRADY, R-Bloomington, if it was right for Brady to name Nathwani to the leadership post for such a short stint in the Senate and when the committee is apparently not meeting. “Unfortunately, we don’t control the scheduling process of when committees meet,” Gerwig responded. “Maybe if we get a fair map that’ll change someday.” Gerwig noted that Nathwani served the last three days of the veto session and will be there for session on Jan. 7 and 8, before the swearing in on Jan. 9 of the new General Assembly.
