ILLINOIS REVIEW
— CHICAGO GOP CHAIRMAN CHRIS CLEVELAND STANDS UP TO RAUNER’S BULLYING TACTICS (FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s past time for the state central committee to step in and right the ship. First, I ask that you prevail upon Bruce Rauner to stop the petty retribution. This is the Republican Party, not the mob, and it’s time for them to grow up. Second, I ask that you consider separating the state party apparatus from the Rauner campaign.)
http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/10/chicago-gop-chairman-stands-up-to-rauners-bullying-tactics.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago GOP and a conservative leader in the party, wrote to the IL GOP’s State Central Committee this week, expressing the frustrations the conservative base is having with the party’s direction and Governor Rauner’s bullying tactics within the party ranks. “State Central Committee member, I’m writing to alert you to a problem with the Rauner campaign’s use of state party resources, and to problems within the state party generally. A few days ago, a Chicago GOP staffer was informed that he could no longer use a desk within state party headquarters. We had put him there a few days a week so we could coordinate our activities with the state party. In the past, the city GOP has frequently supplied volunteers for state party-backed candidates. The reason they offered was a press report that I was under consideration as Rep. Jeanne Ives running mate. (Jeanne and I have talked, but as of this moment she has not yet made a final decision, and she has a number of very good candidates to choose from.) Subsequently, the state party cut off our GOPDataCenter access. Consider what has happened here: the Rauner campaign has ordered the state party to cut off an elected, regular Republican organization, based purely on the rumor that the head of the organization *might* be working with a candidate in a primary against him. To the best of my knowledge, the state central committee has neither endorsed nor slated Bruce Rauner. And given the widespread doubt within the Republican Party over his policy choices and his ability to execute, it seems to me that some dissent is warranted. But whether you love him or hate him, this behavior is abusive, and the state central committee should not stand for it. Our difficulties with the state party go beyond this recent behavior. It has long been the position of senior staffers in the state party that the Chicago GOP should not be running candidates in the city. The theory is that this just “activates” the other side and reminds them that there is an election. We in the Chicago GOP have rejected this position, and believe that a vigorous attack in the belly of the beast has many benefits. While the Chicago GOP is a small organization, and Chicago is often derided as a Democratic bastion, the number of Republican voters here is not small. We cover 7.5% of the Republican voters in the state, more than any county except Cook and DuPage, with 20,000 more voters than the next largest county, Lake. You ignore this constituency at your peril. Four years ago, we ran candidates across the city for the purpose of generating enthusiasm and volunteers for phone calls and door knocks. In close coordination with the Rauner campaign, we flooded their offices with volunteers and executed 363,000 voter contacts, 263,000 of which were door knocks. We were able to raise Rauner’s vote in Chicago to 20.63%, just a hair above the magic 20% threshold. And he won. If Rauner is on the ballot this fall, this won’t happen. Not because we wouldn’t want to; we’re loyal Republicans and Rauner over Pritzker would be an easy choice. It won’t happen because the state party has consistently undermined our efforts to recruit here, and because there is zero enthusiasm for this governor. Even prior to HB 40, we couldn’t get people to sign his petition. It’s past time for the state central committee to step in and right the ship. First, I ask that you prevail upon Bruce Rauner to stop the petty retribution. This is the Republican Party, not the mob, and it’s time for them to grow up. Second, I ask that you consider separating the state party apparatus from the Rauner campaign. They are acting as one and the same, but our party is bigger than Bruce, and we have broader concerns than his personal well-being. Notably, we need to take back the House, and we have two very viable candidates for state rep in Chicago, both of whom *might actually win*. A party must support such activities. I am open to discussing this matter with any of you individually. Chris Cleveland Chairman, Chicago Republican Party)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Rauner calls transparency bill ‘political manipulation,’ angering GOP – Tina Sfondeles
https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/rauner-calls-transparency-bill-political-manipulation-angering-gop/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many lawmakers saw those comments as a sour grapes response to the override, which passed with a 112-0 vote on Wednesday. It was also seen as a strange comment as the governor continues to try to gain back the support of Republican lawmakers after many criticized him for signing a bill to expand taxpayer-funding of abortions. The override was one of nearly a dozen the Illinois House delivered to the governor this week. He did score a major victory, however, in the failed override of a bill that would have prohibited local municipalities from enacting “right-to-work” zones. State Rep. Allen Skillicorn, R-East Dundee, said he was happy to co-sponsor the debt transparency legislation and asked Republican colleagues to unanimously support the override. “It was the right thing to do. #thatsleadership,” Skillicorn tweeted. Others had stronger words for the governor’s backlash. “This is another example of failed Governor Rauner’s alternate reality,” State Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, said. “The governor lost 112-0 on the override — no Republicans voted against the override.” McSweeney said the measure will allow lawmakers and the public to know just how much the state owes, including $2.8 billion in unappropriated bills, which was detailed in a bond offering submitted by the governor’s office and the state’s budget office. “The real question is what did the governor know about the hidden bills and when did he know it?” McSweeney said. Mendoza’s office said the unanimous vote shows the measure represented good policy. “That vote — 112-0 — every single Republican voting with every single Democrat, that ends the discussion over whether this is good policy or politics,” Mendoza spokesman Abdon Pallasch said. “Madigan did not hypnotize [Republicans] David McSweeney and Jeanne Ives to vote for the bill? No. it’s just good policy and the legislators could see which side was telling the truth on this one.” The governor, though, said he is a “strong advocate for transparency” while bringing up a months old feud with Mendoza about IT upgrades.)

The Chicago GOP staffer was told by a Rauner staffer that he could no longer use a desk within the office. According to the press release, the reason the IL GOP offered is a press report that Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, is under consideration as a running mate for State Rep Jeanne Ives. Ives is considering a gubernatorial bid. “We’re disappointed the governor’s team would do something like this. We’re running candidates in Chicago, and the city and state parties need to coordinate so they’re not left out in the cold,” said Cleveland. “The governor should be above such petty retribution.”)

That should terrify Trump. – James Hohmann (DIERSEN: When my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old, they liberated me to speak my mind, but that did not worry them at all because they knew that I had no “jury appeal” because of my terrible demographics. Further, they wanted me to serve as an “example” to current and potential future GAO employees. They wanted current and potential future GAO employees to see a) that GAO gives preference to its employees who are Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran, that is, that GAO discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and b) that GAO wastes the careers of and gets rid of its employees who complain about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, or age discrimination. Further, they knew that virtually all the Republican activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, and political consultants in Illinois promote patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation.)

http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)

WIREPOINTS
— “Whatever” clip encapsulates the new Rauner – Mark Glennon
http://www.wirepoints.com/whatever-clip-encapsulates-the-new-rauner/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When asked what he thought about all the chatter on a primary challenge from GOP Rep. Jeanne Ives, Governor Rauner had only a simple “whatever.” Unfortunately, that’s emblematic of the what Bruce Rauner has become. This is not the same Bruce Rauner who, at least through his primary run four years ago, was informed, substantive, vigorous and principled. Now, he stumbles from day to day with no purpose, unprepared and uninformed, offering little more than glib platitudes delivered with a smile. Nobody in either party in the General Assembly trusts him, and he has largely turned his office over to his wife, who holds fundamentally different views than those her husband ran on. He has lost it, and dropping out of the race is looking more and more like the right way for him to go.)

— What did you do 17 years ago today? I attended the Bush/Cheney rally before the start of Naperville’s Labor Day parade and walked with Bush and Cheney in the parade.  I was one of those who rode a Bush/Cheney bus from the end of the parade to attend the Cheney rally at the Taste of Polonia festival. Earlier that year, I asked Governor George Ryan and Senate President Pate Philip to invite Bush to walk in Wheaton’s 2000 Independence Day Parade. – Dave Diersen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As a presidential candidate, then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush marched in the Last Fling’s Labor Day Parade in 2000 after holding a rally at Naperville North High School. It was on the rally stage before the speech when the candidate, who was oblivious the microphones were live, pointed out a veteran political reporter to his running mate Dick Cheney and said, “There’s Adam Clymer, major-league a—— from The New York Times.”)

How have federal programs harmed your career? In 1971, when I was 22, Oldsmobile withdrew a job offer that I had accepted saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. Democrats use Affirmative Action (AA), Diversity, and Inclusion to not hire and to get rid of their employees who are Republican, and especially those who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.  To help them meet their AA, Diversity, and Inclusion quotas, goals, and targets, my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.  My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

BREITBART
— Illinois GOP Governor: Sanctuary Bill ‘Very Reasonable’ – IAN MASON
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/08/21/illinois-gop-governor-sanctuary-bill-very-reasonable/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bruce Rauner, Republican Governor of Illinois, told the local press Friday he may sign a new bill passed by the heavily Democratic Illinois legislature to frustrate federal immigration enforcement. Claiming it was supported by “the immigration community” in addition to the Illinois Sheriff’s Association and businesses, Rauner told WBEZ, Chicago’s FM public radio channel, that SB31 “seems very reasonable.” Rauner’s office did not respond to Breitbart News’s request to clarify to whom “the immigration community” referred. The patriotic immigration reform group Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) strongly criticized SB31 in an interview with conservative site Illinois Review. Meanwhile, the Chicago chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and open-borders groups like the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, have urged Rauner to sign the bill. SB31 does not concern the handling of immigrants or refugees, but illegal aliens, who are neither. Harmlessly titled the “Illinois Trust Act,” SB31 prohibits all Illinois state and local law enforcement from complying with federal agents’ “immigration detainer” orders. In effect, it will be illegal under the act for police in Illinois keep someone who federal agents tell them is an illegal alien in custody long enough for them to arrive and enforce immigration laws. Instead, they will be compelled to release illegal aliens back onto the street when they have no non-immigration-related reason to keep them locked up. The bill is similar to provisions in effect in the so-called “sanctuary state” of California. “It does not tie law enforcement’s hands. It actually encourages between local law enforcement and federal immigration facilities,” Rauner said, indicating he would make up his mind on whether to sign it in the next few days. Rauner’s office confirmed to Breitbart News Monday that the governor has yet to reach a final decision on SB31. One Illinois immigration hawk was unconvinced. “I think the biggest question Illinois taxpayers have for Governor Rauner and any legislator who would want to pass this bill is, ‘Does making it easier for illegal aliens to stay in Illinois improve the lives of Illinois residents?’” former Republican candidate for the U.S. Congress and Illinois Minutemen-founder Rosanna Pulido told Breitbart News. She explained: “We already spend 4.5 Billion dollars a year for free services for illegal aliens. By signing this Bill, SB 31, Rauner will create an even stronger magnet for illegal aliens who are looking not to be apprehended by the law. Thus, the already overburdened taxpayer will be saddled with even more of a burden. It will truly be the straw that broke the camels back. Personally I am already checking out a different state I can move to.  It is a truly sad day in Illinois.” Brian McCann, whose brother Dennis was killed by an illegal alien who escaped to his native Mexico because of Chicago’s existing “sanctuary” policies, joined other families to opposing SB31. “All the killers were illegal aliens,” McCann told the Illinois Review. “The three of us have made repeated requests to meet with the governor to urge him to veto this dangerous measure. We will meet with the governor downstate or upstate before the August 28th deadline for a veto.” At the launch of Advocates for Victims of Illegal Alien Crime (AVIAC) in June, McCann expressed his frustration with the mainstream media’s constant focus on sympathetic stories about illegal immigrants and not on Americans who are harmed by so-called sanctuary policies. “We get no support … We don’t get coverage,” he told Breitbart News then. If Rauner hoped to curry favor from his state’s rampant political left by signaling support for SB31, he did not find that support forthcoming. “Rauner is a guy who is trying to wreck the lives of working class families,” a spokesman for long-time Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan told WBEZ in response to Rauner’s comments on the sanctuary bill. “I can’t say it any more simply.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/golf/ct-golf-for-millennials-fast-arcade-style-boozy-20170727-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But Topgolf, a high-tech driving range and entertainment company, has set out to prove otherwise. It thinks millennials might well be the key to reviving interest in the sport. The company has tapped into the social potential for golf, creating a space best described as “where a lounge meets a tee box.”  Topgolf is at once old-fashioned (a little bit like Skee-Ball) and modern (technology lets you track your performance, shot by shot – and compete with your friends). And the setting is loud and lively, not your typical back-nine fare.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/kapos-ceos-donate-1-5-million-to-fight-crime/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: ‘Blood boils’ over racism  Michael Sacks, the circumspect businessman and friend of Mayor Rahm Emanuel, strongly condemned the white nationalist protest that turned violent in Charlottesville, Virginia. “My blood boils,” he wrote in an email to employees a day after President Donald Trump defended the protesters who wore Nazi swastikas and carried torches. “Hate, bigotry, intolerance . . . Ku Klux Klan, Nazi’s, Neo Nazi’s White Supremacy, White Nationalists, White Power, BAD, VERY BAD, HORRIBLE, OFFENSIVE DISGUSTING,” the CEO of GCM Grosvenor wrote in an email that was forwarded to me. “We won’t tolerate a whiff of it here,” he wrote of racism. “We as a firm will stand against it. We will stand up to it. We will fight it.” Sacks said his comments weren’t meant for public consumption but acknowledges, “I felt the need to be crystal clear with no equivocation.” He’s among several Chicago top executives who used the events in Charlottesville to discuss company principles and moral codes. Marcus Lemonis, the CEO of Camping World and host of CNBC’s “The Profit,” was more public. In a TV interview he had a message for customers who agreed with Trump’s comments: “Don’t shop at my business.” Jen Tescher, president and CEO of the Center for Financial Services Innovation, referenced Charlottesville at a staff meeting. “We made clear that financial insecurity is no excuse for race-based hatred and bigotry. We reject the idea that improving the lives of some means worsening it for others,” she told me. Outcome Health CEO Rishi Shah also talked with employees. He told me he wanted to send a message to staffers that Trump’s comments “are not consistent with our values.” And he praised CEOs for “speaking up” about Trump’s “inappropriate response.” North Shore businessman Howard Gottlieb was among members of the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities to resign in protest.)
