— Sears gets Bankruptcy Court approval for up to $25.3 million in bonuses to top employees – Lauren Zumbach (DIERSEN: Working for GAO during the 1980s and 1990s was very similar to working for Sears today. Starting in 1989, to retain its employees who were Democrat, minority, female, and/or young, GAO used the extreme subjectivity in its pay-for-performance system to give bonuses to its employees who were Democrat, minority, female, and/or young.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-biz-sears-bonuses-bankruptcy-court-1215-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hoffman Estates-based Sears Holdings Corp., which filed for bankruptcy protection in October, said it needs to able to offer the extra cash to encourage key employees to stick with the company as it attempts to restructure, according to court filings. . .“Under these circumstances, it would be understandable if many key employees are asking themselves whether they should be seeking other opportunities,” Sears said in a court filing last month. However, the retailer “cannot afford this uncertainty — however understandable it may be,” according to the filing. The company has already “suffered significant employee attrition” in the past month, including the departure of the chief operating officer of its Sears Home Services business and five other employees who would have been eligible for bonuses, Sears said in a separate court filing this week.)

BELLVILLE NEWS DEMOCRAT
— In a year Republicans did well in Southern Illinois, why does the St. Clair County GOP struggle? – JOSEPH BUSTOS
https://www.bnd.com/news/local/article222944235.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Brennan said, however, she got “zero” help from the St. Clair County Republican Central Committee in her unsuccessful run for the county board. . .However, some Republicans point to issues within the local party itself as to why the GOP couldn’t gain ground in the county. Sources with ties to the party said most of the local efforts went toward pushing for the re-election efforts of U.S. Rep. Mike Bost and Gov. Bruce Rauner, which left little to no resources to help with the local races. Ed Cockrell is among the local Republican County Board candidates to say the local party didn’t help local candidates, such as with raising money or sending out mailers. . .Duane Henson, a Republican who ran for county clerk, and has served as a precinct committeeman, said some worked harder than him, and he worked harder than other candidates, but candidates who ran countywide all did about the same. “At the end of the day, we were all a couple thousand votes of each other,” said Henson, who chose to self fund his campaign. Henson wouldn’t comment on the leadership of the party. He did say he also has heard the suggestion of putting efforts into smaller races to develop candidates. “You focus on the smaller races and if you could get into some of the school boards and so forth and make some effective changes there, then you could get your message out and work your way up, (but) that takes several election cycles,” Henson said. Henson said there was brainstorming sessions among the candidates during the campaign and the party organized participation in parades leading up to the election. “Could we be better organized? Sure. I think there’s always room for improvement.” Party leaders however, are looking to see what can be done better the next go-around. “I know they’re doing a lot of analysis, some people who are a little higher up in party that me, have been discussing … what’s our path moving forward, what can we do different, what have we done wrong? You do that after anything,” Henson said.)

— 2 in 5 Americans Spend More Money in Retirement Than Expected In doing so, they risk running out of savings down the line. – Maurie Backman
https://www.fool.com/retirement/2018/12/15/2-in-5-americans-spend-more-money-in-retirement-th.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: We’re often told to expect our expenses to go down in retirement, and generally speaking, retirees do spend less than their nonretired counterparts. While the average working American over 40 spends $2,993 a month on discretionary expenses, the average retiree spends just $2,008, according to data from Global Atlantic Financial Group. That said, nearly two out of five retirees are spending more money during their golden years than expected, so they risk prematurely depleting their nest eggs and struggling to keep up with expenses in the future. If you’d rather not land in a similar boat once it’s your turn to retire, the solution is simple: Understand what sort of lifestyle your savings will buy you in the future, and save more before retiring if it isn’t enough.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “The Republican Party needs to reflect the values of center-right voters, who I believe are a majority of voters in this state, utilizing issues of fiscal conservatism, trying to solve our pension problem, working on issues like improving education and our property tax issues,” Baise said. ” … If we’re going to continue to have arguments over whether or not you’re pro-life or pro-choice, whether or not you’re pro-gay marriage or anti-gay marriage, the majority of voters are going to turn their back on you.” Baise characterized his approach as pragmatic, focused on totally on winning. While not getting into specifics, Baise said the party should run candidates who have the ability to win over the majority of voters in the state and allow for differences of opinion on certain issues, like abortion. “Unless you can be elected, you can’t govern,” Baise said. “You can stand up and stay I’m right about this issue, you can scream from your lungs. NEW YORK POST
— What’s ‘immoral’ about caring for America’s poor first? – Betsy McCaughey
https://nypost.com/2018/12/11/whats-immoral-about-caring-for-americas-poor-first/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Not building the wall is what’s truly immoral. Allowing poor migrants to flood across the southern border forces taxpayers to toil longer and pay more taxes to feed and house them, accommodate their children in public schools and pay for their medical care. Americans are already maxed out caring for our own needy, including the homeless sprawled on city streets. This nation has some 40 million people in poverty, one out of every eight people and one of every six children. That’s far higher than the share of people living in poverty in Canada or the UK. Our country doesn’t need to import more poverty. For the same reason, Trump is proposing that only legal immigrants who can support themselves without government handouts be granted green cards. Mayor Bill de Blasio blasted Trump’s proposal as “un-American.” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said “the plan is ugly, it is cruel.” Really? Why should Americans be compelled to provide a safety net for throngs pressing to get into the country? Milton Friedman warned two decades ago that America can have open borders or a generous welfare system but not both. Open borders boost a growing economy by providing a source of labor. But that works only so long as immigrants are barred from government benefits. Trump is tightening regulations under a longstanding law, on the books since 1882, that bars immigrants likely to need government benefits from obtaining permanent status. Starting with President Bill Clinton, the law has been applied so laxly that almost no one is denied a green card for that reason. A staggering 63 percent of households headed by a noncitizen depend on Medicaid, food stamps, housing assistance or in some cases all of these taxpayer-funded programs, according to a December 2018 analysis of census data by the restrictionist Center for Immigration Studies. That figure is almost double what it is for households headed by American-born citizens. Right now, newly arrived legal immigrants who earn little or nothing are eligible for fully subsidized ObamaCare plans, with taxpayers footing the entire bill, even for copays and deductibles. And 6.8 million children of immigrants are enrolled in Medicaid, according to the Urban Institute. Meanwhile, millions of American-born taxpayers who fund this giveaway to newcomers are going without insurance themselves, because they can’t afford it. That doesn’t jibe with the ideal that a democracy’s first duty is to protect its own citizens. Don’t expect the American public to buy into open borders and handouts for all comers. All Americans have to do is look across the Atlantic to see the disastrous results of that policy.)

After previous shutdowns, Congress also has passed legislation to retroactively pay furloughed workers.)

Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, in this spring’s Republican primary election, for which she said the county’s personal leave policy had no provision. Kaczmarek compared the allegations against Hinds to recent lawsuits against DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba. Several veteran deputies have claimed they were punished by Zaruba for unionizing and refusing to support the sheriff politically. One suit has been settled, but more are pending. “Prohibited political activity is a big problem in DuPage County. It impacts all of us,” she said. “Yet, this problem is so easy to fix with tougher policies, better training and a willingness to enforce laws which already exist. Our county officials have chosen to do nothing and here we are today.” Hinds did not respond to requests for comment and Paul Darrah, spokesman for the state’s attorney’s office, confirmed receipt of the complaint but said he could not speak further on the matter.)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/nancyaltman/2018/12/06/why-employers-should-support-the-expansion-of-social-security/#6e693f784be5
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The nation is facing a looming retirement income crisis where workers will be unable to retire and maintain their standards of living. Age discrimination laws properly prohibit employers from firing older workers simply because of their age. An expanded Social Security will provide those older workers with greater opportunity to enjoy some leisure after a lifetime of work. It will also lower employer costs, since older workers are often the most expensive, and allow younger workers to move forward in their careers. Moreover, retirees are consumers. As they age, they tend to stop saving and start spending what savings they were able to accumulate during their working years. The goods and services they purchase are essential for a strong economy. A report published a half-decade ago found that Social Security’s combined payments in 2012 resulted in the production of approximately $1.4 trillion in economic output, the creation of over 9.2 million jobs, and an increase in the tax revenues of local, state, and federal governments that exceeded $222 billion. And that was a half-decade ago. Those positive effects are substantially larger today. And an expanded Social Security would produce even greater returns.)

ILLINOIS REVIEW
— BRINKMAN: THE RISE AND DECLINE OF ILLINOIS’ ONCE-DEPENDABLE DUPAGE REPUBLICAN PARTY
https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2018/11/the-rise-and-decline-of-the-dupage-republican-party.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When James “Pate” Philip left as DuPage party chair in 2003 he left it with half a million dollars. Without their long time leader the DuPage GOP quickly fragmented into the nine individual township organizations who learned to fend for themselves. The money quickly dwindled and was never replenished. Neither were these organizations created equal in their ability or resources to fend for themselves. The lasting coup of the 2010 redistricting map is that it took those districts that followed GOP organizational lines and smashed them up. Local Republican organizations long used to having one representative and one senator now suddenly had five or six in some cases. To be required to focus on too much is to focus on nothing at all. This has undone local efforts to bolster candidates. Tea Parties admirably tried to pick up some of this slack as have larger more well-heeled groups like that of Dan Proft. Tactical victories partially explain the decline, but not the broader trends. While the township organizations helped slow the decline they were not the essential force in DuPage’s rise to preeminence. How then was the county so effective at its peak? Was it all just demographics as some would argue, or purely leadership? Surely both played a role, however one feature absent over the decline of the DuPage party was its massive and systematic outreach during its peak. The county GOP sent a quarterly newsletter to each and every voter. A substantial portion of what was raised every year and at massive events (like the one where Nancy Louise met Pate) went to their distribution. These efforts helped to educate all voters and especially newer ones to see why conservative governance was essential first at the local level, then at the state level. Before they knew it, they had become reliable Republican voters!)

When asked who should lead the Illinois Republican Party, Rauner did not give a direct answer. “Well, we have a chairman, Tim Schneider and a co-chairman,” Rauner said, referring to the newly ousted Cook County Commissioner, whom he handpicked to lead the party, and conservative Lake County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw, who led a quasi-coup of the party leadership in May. “We have some wonderful elected officials who are Republicans,” the governor continued. “We have major donors and funders who are proud Republicans and I think it’s going to be an appropriate process for the Republican party to do some reflection and some discussion about where we go as a party and where we go as a state and lay out a vision for the future. Clearly, changes are needed. Clearly, improvements are needed.”)

— The Religion of Leftism – Allie Stuckey
https://townhall.com/columnists/alliestuckey/2018/11/30/the-religion-of-leftism-n2536798
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Over the last decade, America has moved drastically to the left. Not only are more people on the left than ever before, the left is further left than it’s ever been. This radical brand of progressivism has come to be known as “leftism”—an extreme yet increasingly dominant segment of the political spectrum. At the same time, America has grown more secular. According to Pew, “religious nones” are rapidly growing in number. These “nones” are most concentrated among millennials: 36% of millennials are religiously unaffiliated. Millennials happen to also be America’s most politically progressive generation. This probably isn’t a coincidence, especially since the same trends have occurred in a similar way in other parts of the world, such as Europe. While correlation doesn’t prove causation, politics and religion are so closely related that it’s hard to believe the simultaneous popularization of extreme leftism and secularism is insignificant.)

— OUTSTANDING: Activist voices opposition to legal Illinois marijuana sales – AP
https://www.bnd.com/news/state/illinois/article222349210.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: An opponent to legal marijuana in Illinois says it will allow white corporate exploitation of minority customers. Chicago activist the Rev. Gregory Seal Livingston on Wednesday called the effort to take over a lucrative illegal market “a gangsta move worthy of Al Capone.” He added “profit is the motive,” in legalizing the drug. Illinois has already decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Livingston was joined in voicing opposition to legal marijuana sales by members of Healthy and Productive Illinois. That is a group that opposes legalization and is supported by Smart Approaches to Marijuana, a national anti-cannabis organization. Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation this summer that expands medical marijuana use to people prescribed opioids. The move increased the number of medical marijuana users by more than 46,000 patients. Democrat governor-elect J.B. Pritzker has said he hopes to legalize cannabis soon after he takes office.)

— ILLINOIS PASSES STATE LAW GIVING PENSION BOOST TO ONE CHICAGO ALDERMAN – Vincent Caruso (DIERSEN: My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that when I transferred from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old, I brought with me almost 12 years of Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) credit – almost 9 years that worked for IRS 1971-1980 and almost 3 years that I worked for the Post Office 1966-1969. They were beyond furious that while I worked for the Post Office part-time, I earned full-time CSRS credit. The aforesaid made me eligible for GAO’s $25,000 buyout and early retirement offer in 1993 when I was 45 years old. Overwhelmingly, those who GAO hires have no job-related work experience, let alone experience working for other federal agencies. GAO audits IRS and the Post Office.)
https://www.illinoispolicy.org/illinois-passes-state-law-giving-pension-boost-to-one-chicago-alderman/

(FROM THE ARTICLE: State lawmakers overrode Gov. Rauner’s veto of a bill that allows one former firefighter serving as a Chicago alderman to credit his political salary toward a more lucrative fire pension. The pension boost will also apply to future aldermen with a history of fire department work.)

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/11/28/gops-h-2b-expansion-gives-business-unlimited-supply-of-foreign-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican lawmakers are looking to slip the more than doubling of the H-2B visa program into a last-second spending bill that is expected to be passed before the new year. In total, there are roughly 1.5 million foreign workers in U.S. college-graduate jobs, plus at least 300,000 blue-collar or manual labor jobs. Meanwhile, there are five million Americans who are not in the labor force who want a job with more than 500,000 Americans saying they are discouraged by their job prospects. Every year, America’s working and middle class have their wages reduced by an inflow of more than 1.5 million mostly low-skilled foreign workers who are admitted to the country. This importation of illegal and legal foreign workers has left the country’s bottom line of workers with stagnant wages since the 1970s and forces them to compete with foreign workers for blue-collar jobs.)

The key activated anti-theft alarm system became standard. The increasingly popular choice of an automatic transmission was installed in most Corvettes for the first time, with nearly 54 percent so equipped. This year SAE net measurement for horsepower was now utilized (away from the previous SAE gross standard), and was largely responsible for the much lower engine output figures such as the 200 hp (149 kW) rating on the standard 350 cu in (5.7 L) motor.”)

It being a holiday, we even let him park it in the driveway. The ’82 Corvette—the last of the third-generation (C3) design—is perhaps the least-loved model-year of all, due to the fact that these wildly fast-looking cars were so shockingly slow and underpowered. Trapped inside that wasp-waisted fiberglass bod is a 5.7-liter V8 wheezing out a mere 200 hp due to its crude emissions-control plumbing. The 1982 Corvette is that zoologically unlikely thing, a sexy slug.)

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2018/11/26/the_perfidy_of_illinois_public_payrolls_138742.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I grew up in Park Forest, Ill., a working-class suburb of Chicago. In my youth, Park Forest was pleasantly middle-class — a solid community of well-kept lawns, strong churches, and active sports. Unfortunately for my hometown, times have been tough over the years, reflected by a jobless rate about twice the national one and a poverty rate 43 percent higher than the state of Illinois average. As a consequence, Park Forest has lost almost a third of its peak population of 30,000 since the 1970s. But like many such struggling communities, one class of people has found a way to prosper: public employees. Recently, Fox affiliate Channel 32 and Open the Books detailed the exorbitant pay package for part-time interim school Superintendent Joyce Carmine. She retired in 2017 making $398,000 annually, the highest-paid superintendent in Illinois, in a community where the median household income is $44,000. She will receive, courtesy of taxpayers, a pension of just under $300,000 for the rest of her life. Adding insult to injury, the school district hired this retiree back as a consultant at the rate of $1,200 per day for a total of 100 days, bringing her pay this year to $419,000 total for part-time work. Given the modest $75,000 median home price in Park Forest, her salary equates to 5.5 home purchases…per year.)

— Champaign County Republicans working on 2020 vision – Debra Pressey
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2018-11-25/champaign-county-republicans-working-2020-vision.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Less than three weeks after a brutal election outcome for Champaign County Republicans, they’re looking down the road at the next big challenge. That is: How to avoid another blue sweep of countywide offices in 2020. Six Champaign County-wide offices will be up for election when Americans choose their next president — county coroner, county recorder, circuit clerk, state’s attorney, circuit judge and county auditor. Democrat George Danos won the auditor’s office in the Nov. 6 election for a two-year unexpired term — which places the office back in play in 2020. And Circuit Judge Jason Bohm said he’ll be running as a Republican in his first election after being appointed to the bench earlier this year. Three other countywide offices up for election are currently held by Republicans — Circuit Clerk Katie Blakeman, Coroner Duane Northrup and Recorder Mark Shelden — and all three said they plan to run again in 2020. . .He sees three issues for his party to address. One is acknowledging it wasn’t a single problem — such as voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump — but multiple problems in the last election, “and we have to identify what those problems are and mitigate the ones we can’t get rid of,” he said. . .The Trump factor Republican county board member Jon Rector is also in a seat up for election in 2020. In 2016, he won by just 38 votes, “and two years from now, with what’s happening at the top of the ticket with the Republicans, it’ll be a challenge,” he said. . .Given his promise to always vote his conscience first and his party second on the county board, Rector said he found it disappointing that many voters didn’t do their homework. “These students on campus are so bright, and all they went by — they were told that Donald Trump is horrible and don’t vote for any local ‘R,'” he said. “I applaud them for voting, but they need to do their homework.” A particular challenge for Republicans at the local level, Shelden said, is that the average students who live outside the area but vote in Champaign County naturally gravitate toward national politics. “For the Republican Party, we absolutely need to have a better message for younger voters,” he said. Republican John Farney, who will be handing over the county treasurer’s office to Democratic opponent Laurel Prussing next month, said he ran his most grassroots campaign ever in the recent election — but work done by him and fellow GOP candidates couldn’t trump voter dissatisfaction with Washington. Some of the feedback he has gotten post-election is that he didn’t do enough to position himself as anti-Trump, Farney said, though he doesn’t see that making a difference. “A certain segment of the voting population sees Republican and thinks Trump, especially folks who are not tied into local issues,” he said. Despite the outcome, Farney said he still regards the campaign as having been a great experience — though he doubts he’ll ever run for office again. “I have a sense of relief that has come over me,” he said. “There are a lot of issues facing county government, and, quite honestly, the keys to the castle have been handed over to the local Democrats, and they’re going to have a lot of decisions to make over the next few years. And I wish them the best of luck.”)

WASHINGTON TIMES
— Trump and the ongoing culture war – Robert Knight
https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/nov/25/trump-and-the-ongoing-culture-war/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Since November 2016, the media and the progressive left have been pounding the same two claims. The first is that Donald Trump was not really elected, since Hillary Clinton got more popular votes. The second is that anyone who voted for Mr. Trump or supports him today is a white male supremacist bigot. And probably homophobic and xenophobic to boot. Regardless of actual race or sex. Regarding the first claim, Hillary’s national margin of 2.8 million votes can be explained entirely by California, which has become a one-party, socialist state with enormous potential for vote fraud. Mrs. Clinton collected 4.3 million more votes in the Golden State than Mr. Trump, and, as Investor’s Business Daily noted after the final count, “If you take California out of the popular vote equation, then Trump wins the rest of the country by 1.4 million votes. And if California voted like every other Democratic state — where Clinton averaged 53.5 percent wins — Clinton and Trump end up in a virtual popular vote tie.” There weren’t even any Republicans on the ballot in the U.S. Senate race, and no Republicans were running for House seats in nine of California’s 53 congressional districts, of which 45 now are represented by Democrats.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: So why should we be glad for this mediocre performance? Because the Democrats dominate education, the media and Hollywood (they also dominate the legal system, but that’s another story for another day). And aging hippy Baby Boomers have raised the latest generation of adults, the Millennials. We should have done worse. The Democrats spent years brainwashing our children in the public schools and universities. K-12 and college youth are now taught that Republican ideals are racist, sexist, homophobic — so wrong that they must be censored out of society. Those who disagree with this groupthink are punished. It takes guts to stand up and be a pariah among your fellow students and risk getting a bad grade from your teachers. Democrats constitute 41 percent of K-12 teachers. Only 27 percent are Republicans. Half voted for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, in contrast to 29 percent for Donald Trump. The school administration forces liberal curriculum on the teachers, which counters any conservatism they may have. Democratic professors in college outnumber Republicans even worse, 10 to 1. The Harvard University faculty backs Democrats 96 percent of the time. One of the few faculty members there who is not a Democrat was too afraid to comment about it. “Sorry, but the smart thing for me to do about this kind of issue is not to comment!” he said when asked for a comment by Fox News. The Democrats control most of the media, constantly spinning the news to make Republicans look mean and Democrats look like saints. More than 96 percent of donations from media figures to either of the two major-party presidential candidates went to Hillary Clinton. The three major TV broadcast networks have the most hostile coverage of a president in TV news history — 92 percent. Only eight percent of the coverage of Trump is positive. Hollywood movies do the same thing. I just watched “The First Purge,” which is a classic example of this bias. It features a party in power known as “The New Founding Fathers of America.” This administration starts a “purge,” where for one day a year, crime is legal and people are free to go around murdering other people and committing any crime they want. The NRA supports the purge. The administration justifies it with the need for population control of poor people. It’s the same old tired Hollywood plot to portray Republicans as evil and Democrats as righteous moral crusaders. Beautiful minorities comprise the opposition fighting back against this oppressive regime. Republicans are always portrayed as old white men and Democrats as that attractive person you’d like to be friends with. Teenage minds are more impressionable than adults; what are they going to think of the mostly white (translate: racist) party that wants to murder poor people? None of the stereotypes are accurate, it’s become pretty well-known lately that Democrats were the party of racism, and there are plenty of minorities in the Republican Party who don’t buy into the Democrats’ lies. Millennials reached voting age after the worst of this indoctrination and consequently vote more Democratic than previous generations. This was also due to the influence of their left-leaning Baby Boomer parents. NPR exit polls from the midterm elections reported that two-thirds of people age 18-29 voted Democrat, which is a major bump from previous midterms. They also turned out in bigger numbers than they did in the last midterms. Young-adult turnout surged by 188 percent in early voting compared with 2014. One quarter of all voters now are Millennials. I’ve said for years during Barack Obama’s presidency that Republicans would need a celebrity in order to take back the White House due to the amount of indoctrination — and sure enough, along came Donald Trump. Trump was a Democrat for much of his adult life, and palled around with the top Hollywood elites. He was able to attract a portion of the population that is wowed by celebrities. He may not reflect conservative values perfectly due to his background, but to the left’s dismay, he is getting a lot accomplished for Republicans. And he is making significant inroads against the left’s dominance of the media by tweeting directly to the American people every day. Fortunately, there are signs things may be changing. The #WalkAway and BLEXIT movements are composed of minorities leaving the Democrat Party and exposing its deception. As technology continues to evolve, there are new areas of influence online opening up to influence the younger generations, bypassing education, the media, Hollywood and their parents. And the children of Gen X are now becoming adults, who are more conservative than the Millennials. There is some hope we haven’t lost it all.)

CBS NEWS
— Caravan confirms what Trump has been saying for weeks – Michael Graham
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/commentary-caravan-confirms-what-trump-has-been-saying-for-weeks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Sunday, hundreds of would-be illegal immigrants gathered at the U.S. border to make a massive contribution to the Trump 2020 re-election campaign. They chanted that they weren’t bound by the idea of borders and laws (“We are not criminals! We are international workers!”). They hurled rocks at U.S. Border Patrol agents. They rushed the border itself, cutting holes in fencing and climbing walls. They forced authorities to use tear gas to protect themselves and turn back the mob. The San Ysidro Port of Entry was forced to close for more than five hours. In other words, they confirmed what President Trump has been saying for weeks about the caravan and what it represents. And, like clockwork, the president’s progressive opponents have been answering his extreme rhetoric with their own. The video of crowds of caravan participants pushing their way through border fencing or throwing rocks at uniformed Americans is disturbing. Even more disturbing is the fact that the caravan’s participants and organizers (like the subtly-named group “People Without Borders”) have been telegraphing their plans for weeks. Weeks ago, while media outlets criticized President Trump over the caravan issue and insisting that it posed no threat, actual participants were looking into TV cameras and announcing their intention to cross the U.S. border — no matter what. And now they’ve tried to do just that. The situation is so bad that Mexico’s interior department announced Sunday it will deport around 500 migrants because they ignored Mexican authorities and tried to cross the border “violently” and illegally.” Does it now seem so ludicrous to put a few thousand American soldiers at that border? The American Left still thinks so.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— Conservatism Isn’t Dead Yet The great contradiction is between what liberals claim to believe and the way they live their own lives. – Bobby Jinda
https://www.wsj.com/articles/conservatism-isnt-dead-yet-1543176293
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Liberals rail against supposedly rampant structural inequalities, and cite disparate impacts as proof of inherent racism and sexism. Women and minorities are broadly disadvantaged, according to this perspective, due to the evils of “white privilege.” Structural bias counts more than individual effort, so that neither success nor failure is truly earned. . .Liberals embrace multiculturalism, claiming all cultures are at least morally and practically equivalent, while they also denigrate Western culture as intrinsically tied to a history of slavery and colonialism. College campuses are filled with students and professors arguing that America is the greatest threat to world peace and development. Yet despite the West’s imperfections, modern liberal democracy still offers the best governing system on earth to promote freedom and human dignity. Few women would willingly trade its equality for the female genital mutilations, child marriage, sex-selective abortions and other gender-based injustices found in other societies. Even a Churchillian acknowledgment from the left that American culture is the least-bad choice would be progress. Liberals have championed the sexual revolution to overturn traditional mores around ethics and marriage, and to promote freedom from restraint as the ultimate sexual—though not economic—good. Pursuing pleasure and abandoning restraint make for popular bumper stickers, song lyrics and movie plots. Yet the benefits of monogamy and fidelity, for both adults and the children they bring into the world, have been demonstrated repeatedly. Marriage and intact families are correlated with higher incomes, stronger economic growth, upward mobility, higher workforce-participation rates, decreased child poverty and lower dropout rates. Indeed, marriage is most common and more enduring among affluent, educated Americans. Liberal elites would rather folks do as they say, rather than as they do.)
