— President Obama and the discipline of optimism – Mary Schmich  (DIERSEN: What have you been erroneously optimistic about?  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat GAO superiors a) would let me work at least until my normal retirement age of 55 in 2003, but they forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, b) would promote me beyond GS-13, but they never did, c) would always assign me to audits of IRS, but they kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and d) would offer me a promotion to GS-13 if I would transfer to GAO from IRS in 1980, but they forced me to take an $18,459 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer.  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat IRS superiors a) would promote me beyond GS-12, but they never did, b) would not disallow my education deductions, but they did, and c) would not disallow my partial day per diem claims, but they did.  I was erroneously optimistic that my Democrat Post Office superiors a) would let me continue to work, but they forced me resign in 1969 and b) would not disallow my sick leave requests, but they did.  None of the aforesaid adverse actions would have been taken against me if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, or a veteran.)

I would stress that GAO audits federal agencies.  I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels (currently $92,632-$120,427). For almost 9 of those years, I worked on audits of federal financial industry regulators; for almost 6 years, on audits of many other federal agencies; and for 3 years, on audits of IRS.  I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $77,899-$88,286. I served on the Executive Committee of the Chicago Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants for 13 years.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Evelyn Sanguinetti, Illinois’ first Latina lieutenant governor, spoke at a Hispanic festival Friday about her own life as the daughter of immigrants and how education is the key to a better life. “The American dream is alive and it is incumbent upon all of us to create the environment to make it happen,” she told reporters at the celebration of Three Kings’ Day at Western Avenue Community Center, Bloomington. Blending Spanish and English in brief remarks to the audience of about 70 children and adults, Sanguinetti spoke of her mother, a 15-year-old Cuban refugee, and her Ecuadorian immigrant father. They worked hard to give her a good life but money was tight in her native Hialeah, Fla., she said. She said her mother, whom she described as her “shero,” told her, “In this country, you’ll always be able to rise like the foam.” She said she was an “uninspired” student in grade school, but her love and talent for the piano won her a place at The New World School of the Arts in Miami. “That’s when all the lights in my life turned on,” said Sanguinetti, who eventually earned a law degree. She said she and Gov. Bruce Rauner believe all Illinois children deserve the opportunity that comes from a first-class education. To help make that possible, Illinois must have a “complete, comprehensive, balanced budget” and a business environment free of “punitive” regulations that spurs growth and keeps jobs in the state, she told reporters.)

POSITIVELY NAPERVILLE
— WARRENVILLE, NAPERVILLE, WOODRIDGE, AND LISLE MAYORS TO HOLD JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE MONDAY IN WHEATON  (DIERSEN: Just kidding, but when will petitions be circulated for Cook County to annex DuPage and the other collar counties?)
http://www.positivelynaperville.com/2017/01/06/warrenville-naperville-woodridge-lisle-mayors-hold-joint-press-conference-monday/68849
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the bottom of the Daily Herald story (Jan. 5, 2016), find this commentary from Stan Zegel, Executive Director at Citizen Participation Institute in Winfield where he states a referendum would be binding. It appears the petitions are invoking a procedure established by state law 65 ILCS 5/7-1-16 whereby 250 electors in a municipality (a village or a city) can cause a referendum like this to be held. It is a binding referendum. It further appears that no such referendum is necessary in the acquiring municipality. That explains why no petitions have been circulated in Naperville. If the voters in a particular municipality vote against it, then it cannot be submitted again in that municipality until at least 22 months later, and then it will take it will take far more than 250 signatures to put it on the ballot again in that municipality. If it passes in any municipality, then that place automatically becomes part of Naperville. Any bonded indebtedness of an approving municipality, and of Naperville, get merged together and everyone shares in paying off the combined debt. Thus the taxpayers in Lisle, Woodridge, Warrenville (if the annexation is approved in their municipality) would take on a share of Naperville’s debt, and Naperville taxpayers would take on a share the other places’ debt. It follows that, with everything then part of Naperville, Naperville’s ordinances are in effect throughout the combined area, and everyone can then elect the mayor and members of the Naperville City Council as their terms come up in 2019 and after.)

— A Sensible Plea for Limits on Immigration – Ramesh Ponnuru  (DIERSEN: Did you benefit from lower immigration in the past?  I did. If legal and illegal immigration was as high during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s as it is now, immigrants may very well have gotten the jobs that I did doing yard work, delivering newspapers, washing dishes, cleaning golf shoes, chipping slag, pumping gasoline, delivering mail, working on an automobile assembly line, working as a security guard, selling tires, automotive services, and major appliances, collecting delinquent taxes, and auditing federal agencies. Immigration advocates, their operatives, and their dupes look down on me, despise me, if not hate me for taking jobs that immigrants could have had.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: What happens to federal employees when a new president shakes things up? Do they stay or do they go? A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research looks at this trend and sorts government workers into one of three categories. The study, “Elections, Ideology and Turnover in the U.S. Federal Government,” comes from three political science professors: Alexander Bolton of Emory University, John M. de Figueiredo of Duke University and David Lewis of Vanderbilt University. They looked at Office of Personnel Management data spanning 1988 and 2011 and developed departure models to run against it. So what kind of federal employee will you be under President Donald Trump’s administration? Take our survey and see where you stand among other government employees.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: He entered the White House a living symbol, breaking a color line that stood for 220 years. Barack Obama took office, and race immediately became a focal point in a way that was unprecedented in American history. No matter his accomplishments, he seemed destined to be remembered foremost as the first black man to lead the world’s most powerful nation. But eight years later, Obama’s racial legacy is as complicated as the president himself. To many, his election was a step toward realizing the dream of a post-racial society. He was dubbed the Jackie Robinson of politics. African-Americans, along with Latinos and Asians, voted for him in record numbers in 2008, flush with expectations that he’d deliver on hope and change for people of color. Some say he did, ushering in criminal justice reforms that helped minorities, protecting hundreds of thousands of immigrants from deportation, and appointing racially diverse leaders to key jobs, including the first two black attorneys general. These supporters say he deserves more credit than he gets for bringing America back from the worst recession since the Great Depression, the killing of Osama bin Laden, and a major expansion of health care that secured insurance for millions of minorities. They celebrate his family as a sterling symbol of black success. But Obama also frustrated some who believe he didn’t speak out quickly or forcefully enough on race or push aggressively enough for immigration reform. And his presidency did not usher in racial harmony. Rather, both blacks and whites believe race relations have deteriorated, according to polls. Mounting tensions over police shootings of African-Americans prompted protests in several cities and the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement. Perhaps most strikingly, the president’s successor, Donald Trump, is seen by many as the antithesis of a colorblind society, a one-time leader of the “birther” movement that spread the falsehood that Obama was born in Africa. Trump’s strong reliance on white voters was in sharp contrast to the multiracial coalition that gave Obama his two victories. “President Obama represents the face of the future — multicultural America. Donald Trump represents the old racial order of the black-white divide,” says Fredrick Cornelius Harris, director of the Center on African American Politics and Society at Columbia University. “And for the next decades to come, there will be a battle between those two viewpoints of what America is.”  It took more than two centuries for America to elect a black president. It will take many years after he leaves office to sort out what it all meant.)

http://www.theblaze.com/news/2017/01/03/paul-ryan-stops-kid-from-dabbing-during-the-most-awkward-swearing-in-youll-ever-see/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: First there was planking, then there was owling, then there was Taylor Swifting, and now there is dabbing. You’ll oftentimes find internet meme sensations popping up here and there, and the latest one is called “dabbing.” It’s where you tuck your head into your forearm as you cross it over your head. People everywhere are doing it, but Speaker of the House Paul Ryan is having none of it.  During the swearing in of Kansas Rep. Roger Marshall, Ryan, Marshall, and his son were putting their hands on the Bible for a photo-op, with Marshall’s son began dabbing. Ryan, either not understanding what the son was doing, or not really feeling like going along with it, put a stop to it. “You alright?” he asks the teen. “I’m alright,” the son responded while still holding the pose. “Do you want…can you put your hand down?” continues Ryan. The teen then put his arm down and apologized. “Were you going to sneeze? Is that it?” asked Ryan. The awkwardness level of this video is turned up to 11, but regardless, it’s still a humorous moment that will live in infamy for the “dabber.”)

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/312662-audit-the-fed-bill-gets-new-push
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Under the bill, the Fed’s monetary policy deliberations could be subject to outside review by the Government Accountability Office.  Proponents of the measure argue that the Fed is too powerful and lacks sufficient oversight for its interest rate decisions. But Fed officials from Yellen on down, as well as other critics, have warned that such a policy could subject the Fed to undue political pressure and discourage it from taking unpopular steps for the good of the overall economy. The proposal has garnered some bipartisan support and has passed the House several times in past Congresses.)

The House Rules specifically cite the Holman Rule which will have the following purpose: “The purpose of this provision is to see if the reinstatement of the Holman rule will provide Members with additional tools to reduce spending during consideration of the regular general appropriation bill.” The Holman Rule will enable the House of Representatives to reduce the number of federal workers at specific agencies or cut their compensation. It would be done as a provision of or an amendment to an appropriations bill. The rule will allow Congress to reduce the workforce or compensation for employees in agencies covered by the specific spending bill in which the provision or amendment is included.)

RASMUSSEN REPORTS
— Voters Say Media Still Anti-Trump
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/general_politics/january_2017/voters_say_media_still_anti_trump
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Voters remain critical of the news coverage of Donald Trump and think the media is still showing the same bias against him that it displayed during the presidential campaign. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that nearly half (48%) of all Likely U.S. Voters believe most reporters are biased against the president-elect. Only 12% think they are biased for Trump, while 31% feel most reporters try to be fair and balanced.  (To see survey question wording, click here.) A closer look finds that 74% of Republicans and a plurality (47%) of voters not affiliated with either major political party think most reporters are biased against Trump.  Even Democrats think most reporters are more likely to be biased against Trump (26%) than biased for him (16%). But 47% of voters in President Obama’s party believe most reporters try to be fair and balanced, a view shared by 29% of unaffiliateds and only 15% of GOP voters.)

EDITOR AND PUBLISHER
— The Solution to Fake News – Nu Yang  (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, newspapers act as arms of the Democrat Party.)
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/columns/editorial-the-solution-to-fake-news/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office this month, newspapers at major publications like the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have seen a major bump in subscriptions. In a span of a few weeks after the election, the Times confirmed it had about 132,000 paid print and digital subscriptions while the Journal reported it saw a 300 percent increase in new subscribers a day after Trump was elected. Publishers should take this news as an encouraging sign that the public does want accurate and truthful reporting. Newspapers remain an important and powerful brand, and they should be the solution for fake news. Let’s not forget that before social media and algorithms dictated to us what was considered news, newspapers were our source of information. Despite many journalists operating with leaner newsrooms and resources, they still put in the same time and energy while covering this election. But when we look back at 2016, there were certainly some media lessons that had we all had to learn, but now we need to move forward and pick ourselves up because there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: OUTSTANDING: E-Verify. A chief rallying cry of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign involved limiting immigration to boost employment among native-born Americans, and a position paper outlining how he would do that includes mandating E-Verify nationwide to keep employers from hiring those in the country without legal permission. E-Verify, a system for employers to electronically check a new hire’s identity information against government databases before permitting them to work, has been required of federal contractors and vendors since 2007. Some states require public or private employers to use the system; Illinois does not. Critics of E-Verify raise concerns about privacy, implementation burdens and inaccuracies that keep legal immigrants from working.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170102/business/301029908/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 1. YOUR WEALTH RATIO  A wealth ratio is a measure of how effectively you’ve converted your lifetime income into wealth. . .2. YOUR OVERHEAD RATIO  How much of your after-tax income is eaten up by basic, must-have expenses? If you’re having trouble making ends meet, calculating your overhead ratio can help explain why. It also can be handy to know when you’re determining if you can afford new loan payments or how much to save in an emergency fund. . .3. YOUR TAX RATES  Your tax bracket doesn’t reveal the amount of taxes paid on your total income. Instead, the bracket (also called the marginal tax rate) reflects how much Uncle Sam claimed of the last dollar you earned. If you’re a single filer in the 25 percent federal tax bracket, the first $9,275 of your 2016 taxable income is taxed at the 10 percent rate, the next $28,375 at 15 percent and the amount above $37,650 at 25 percent.)

On my father’s side, in 1844, my great great grandfather immigrated to Chicago and worked in a brick factory. In 1854, he homesteaded a farm in southeast Crete Township.  In 1864, he bought 10 acres in northeast Crete and he and my great grandfather began operating Crete’s only hardware store at the northeast intersection of Main and Exchange; tragically, in 1966, the building was torn down and the land sold.  In 1902, my great grandfather had the 1285 Main Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres; it is one of Crete’s landmark homes; tragically, it was sold during the 1940s.  In 1926, my grandfather had 1286 Wood Street built on the aforesaid 10 acres. Between 1948 and 1954, my father, my mother, and I lived in an apartment above the aforesaid hardware store.  In 1954, my father, my mother, my brother, and I moved into the 1286 Wood Street home.  My father lived there until he died suddenly in 1969.  My mother lived there until she died last year.  I lived there until 1972.  My bother continues to live there.)

http://www.breitbart.com/video/2017/01/01/michele-norris-make-a-america-great-again-is-trumps-deeply-encoded-promise-of-white-prosperity/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sunday on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” radio journalist and former host of the National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” Michele Norris said President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promise to “Make America Great Again,” is a “deeply encoded,” slogan meant as a  “promise of white prosperity above everything else.” Norris said, “In the phrase ‘Make America Great Again,’ there’s one word that if you are a person of color, that you sort of stumble over, and it’s the word ‘again.’ Because you’re talking about going back to a time that was not very comfortable for people of color. They did not have opportunities, they were relegated to the back of the line.”  “And this was a country that — to be honest — was built on the promise of white prosperity above everything else. And for a lot of people, when they hear that message, ‘Make America Great Again,’ deeply encoded in that message is a return to a time where white Americans can assume a certain amount of prosperity,” she added.)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/advice/2017/01/01/traveling-abroad-donald-trump-administration/95999452/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: How should Americans travel abroad in the age of Donald Trump? No matter how you voted in the last election, the answer is the same: carefully. But also, definitely. As the president-elect prepares to take office Jan. 20, travelers have expressed worries about how they’ll be perceived internationally after a lengthy campaign that tested the limits of civility. “A potentially controversial president means you have to prepare,” says Colby Martin, an intelligence director for Pinkerton. “Americans traveling abroad need to have a comprehensive plan for staying safe.” Reality check: Most international trips abroad will probably — hopefully — be uneventful, regardless who’s in the White House.  That’s because our most popular destinations are Mexico and Canada, in that order. And they’re used to the ups and downs of our political system and accustomed to American visitors. Roughly the same number of Americans visit Canada as they do all of Europe. But wander outside the well-trodden areas, and things could get interesting, say experts.)

ABC7
— VP-ELECT MIKE PENCE VISITS CHICAGO FOR FUNDRAISER – Diane Pathieu and Laura Podesta
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/vp-elect-mike-pence-visits-chicago-for-fundraiser/1678382/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Vice President-elect Mike Pence was in Chicago Friday for a fundraiser at the Chicago Club. The fundraiser drew GOP heavy hitters, but dozens protested Pence’s arrival, too. The vice president-elect avoided those protests his motorcade entered through a secure area blocked off to the public by police and secret service. Once inside the Chicago Club, people who attended the private fundraiser said Pence was upbeat and thankful. Vice President elect-Mike Pence was in good spirits — smiling and waving — as he left a private fundraiser at the Chicago Club Friday. Several Illinois Republican leaders were among the 60 in attendance. “It was very upbeat. Raised a lot money for the Republican National Committee. He talked about his experience on the road, and the campaign,” said Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin. Governor Bruce Rauner was traveling for the holiday season and was not in attendance. Those who were there said Pence kept it light, and did not go into topics like job creation, even though that’s what Tim Schneider, Chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, said he hopes Pence will bring to our state. “People are leaving because there are no jobs. I think we need to bring jobs back to those communities were people have choices; and don’t choose to join gangs and do those types of things. Give them a job,” Schneider said. Kirk Dillard is chair of the Regional Transit Authority, which oversees the CTA, Metra, and Pace is ready to lobby Pence into spending more money on railroad infrastructure. “I clearly want Governor Pence, whose father was a bus driver in Chicago, to understand the need for mass transit like we have in Chicago,” Dillard said. Throughout the duration of the two hour fundraiser protesters chanted and held signs outside. Betty Virginia Holcomb is concerned with Pence’s track record of wanting to defund Planned Parenthood and restrict access to abortions. “Mike Pence has already put in place restrictive actions in the state of Indiana that restrict women’s access to reproductive rights and other types of healthcare,” she said. Glenn Pannell, who looks remarkably similar to the VP-elect, came all the way from New York to take a stand and support Planned Parenthood and LGBTQ organizations. “Mike Pence is out here raising money for the next four years…I’m out here raising money and awareness for people and causes that are important to me and unimportant to Mike Pence,” Pannell said. Tickets for the fundraiser cost $2,700 and up. The event raised hundreds of thousands of dollars that will go to the Republican National Committee to pay for multiple transition costs. As far as those protesters, they said they will be back out Saturday holding a demonstration in front of Trump Tower.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-mike-pence-chicago-fundraiser-met-1231-20161230-story.html
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/92231708-132.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Vice President-elect Mike Pence appeared at a Chicago fundraiser Friday where the Illinois GOP hoped to raise as much as $1 million for the Republican National Committee. On the host committee for the $2,700-per-ticket fundraiser were some of Illinois’ most prominent Republicans, including Gov. Bruce Rauner, seven of the eight Illinois GOP congressmen and Ron Gidwitz, a businessman who led President-elect Donald Trump’s Illinois campaign fundraising effort. The Indiana governor arrived in the Loop shortly before 11 a.m. and entered the Chicago Club through a back door not visible from the barricaded sidewalks in front of the building. Pence was not greeted by protesters, although they arrived later while he was inside. Illinois Republican Chairman Tim Schneider said a fractured state party during the primary season has since coalesced around Trump and Pence. “Chicago is the hub of the Midwest and it’s also very close to his roots in Indiana, so he can draw from those folks who are supporters from Indiana,” said Schneider, a Cook County commissioner, of Pence’s visit to the city. “I think we have a great number of supporters here in Chicago who believe in this new Trump-Pence administration, and that’s why they’re here.” Not listed as part of the host committee were U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Robert Dold of Kenilworth, who distanced themselves from Trump but ultimately lost their re-election bids last month. Rauner has been reluctant to even say Trump’s name, which didn’t stop Democrats from cobbling together a TV attack ad during the fall attempting to link the governor to the GOP standard bearer. Rauner confirmed that he has spoken to Trump since the election. Rauner did not attend the event, however, as he had traveled out West with his family. About 150 protesters gathered at Michigan Avenue and Van Buren Street. Many of them waved signs that read “We say no to racism, sexism & war!” Among the chants they repeated: “Our bodies, our lives, our right to decide!” and “Racist, sexist, anti-gay! Mike Pence go away!” and “No Trump, no Pence! No KKK! No fascist USA!”There was, however, a Trump supporter who responded to the chants through a megaphone of his own. The man, who only would identify himself by the fake name of “Alexander Hamilton,” was approached by a handful of demonstrators who screamed and cursed at him as a Chicago police officer watched nearby. “Donald Trump will make America great again!” the man chanted over and over again. A Republican official indicated the fundraiser was expected to raise $500,000 to $1 million. Those making the maximum $33,400 contribution got a roundtable and photo with Pence, while those contributing $10,000 got a photo with him.)

— Lisle, Warrenville residents pushing for annexation to Naperville – Bob Smith
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20161230/news/161239939/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Naperville could become a much, much larger city if some residents in at least three neighboring towns have their way. Apparently spurred by the recent emphasis on government consolidation in DuPage County, residents in Lisle and Warrenville are circulating petitions to place referendum questions on the April 4 ballot to measure support for proposals to annex their communities to Naperville. A similar petition has been rumored to be circulating in Woodridge. Officials in all four towns said Friday they don’t know what’s behind the effort and stress that the complexities and likely resistance to such consolidations make them extremely unlikely. Lisle Mayor Joseph Broda said he first heard about the push earlier this month when Warrenville officials contacted leaders in all three towns — along with Woodridge — to alert them to the petition drives. “It’s hard to figure this one out,” Broda said. Warrenville Mayor David Brummel says he would oppose any effort to annex his city into Naperville. Warrenville Mayor David Brummel said his city’s assistant city manager, Cristina White, first learned of the campaign when she saw a man soliciting signatures for a petition outside the public library. A Chicago man who declined to be identified was collecting signatures on an annexation petition Friday afternoon outside the library. “I had no idea it was going on in other towns, too,” Brummel said. “I’ve been mayor for 12 years and I’ve never heard of anyone interested in annexing to Naperville.”)

— How long does it take to crush a federal employee? – Jeff Neal  (DIERSEN: Virtually all federal employees are Democrats.  Political affiliation discrimination is rampant in the federal government.  I survived tremendous efforts by my Democrat superiors, Democrat supervisors, Democrat coworkers, and Democrat subordinates to get rid of me a) for almost 3 years while I worked the Post Office 1966-1969, b) for almost 9 years while I worked for IRS 1971-1980, and c) for almost 18 years while I worked for GAO 1980-1997.  In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, I am amazed that I was able to do the aforesaid.  The following helped me survive: I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 33.)

December 30 Morning Edition

CBS ST. LOUIS
— RNC Sells $2,700 Tickets For Luncheon With Vice President-Elect  (DIERSEN: How much money have you given the RNC during the last year, during the last 10 years, during the last 20 years, during the last 30 years, and during the last 40+ years?  I have given money to the RNC each and every year since 1976. I would have been able to give the RNC more money each year if my Democrat IRS superiors (1971-1980) had not wasted my career and if my Democrat GAO superiors (1980-1997) had not wasted my career and forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old. But constructively, since 2000, I have made in-kind contributions to the RNC in the form of GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails that are free and contain no advertising.  Since 2004, those emails have gone out each and every day and they have included links to more than 256,300 articles and information on many upcoming events, including RNC’s fundraiser today with Pence.  The value GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails since 2000, and especially since 2004, far exceeds the many millions of dollars that Pence might raise today for the RNC.  While I am motivated enough to donate 10+ hours each and every day of what is left of my life and to pay all the internet, newspaper subscription, website subscription, magazine subscription, and other costs to put out the emails, I am not motivated enough to donate $2,700 for a ticket to attend today’s fundraiser.  I asked to be allowed to attend the fundraiser as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor, but I was told that the fundraiser is closed to members of the news media like me.)
http://stlouis.cbslocal.com/2016/12/30/rnc-sells-2700-ticket-for-charity-luncheon-with-vice-president-elect/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Vice President-elect Mike Pence is scheduled to be in Chicago to raise money for the Republican National Committee. The Indiana governor will speak at a luncheon Friday in downtown Chicago. Tickets start at $2,700 per person. Among those listed on an invitation as members of the host committee are Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner, state GOP chairman Tim Schneider and the Republican members of Illinois’ congressional delegation. Rauner distanced himself from President-elect Donald Trump during the election, refusing to talk politics and even avoiding saying Trump’s name. Since the election he has said he wants to work with the new administration. He said he spoke with Trump by phone and they had a “positive” conversation. Several groups say they plan to protest outside the Pence event.)

http://abc7chicago.com/news/boy-15-still-hospitalized-after-being-shot-4-times-/1678261/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The family of 15-year-old Michael Moss is praying for a miracle, as he remains hospitalized after surviving a gunman’s attack where he was shot four times in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. On Dec. 19, Moss – who lives, along with his three siblings, in DuPage County with their legal guardian for the last three years – was visiting relatives in Chicago when he decided to walk to a nearby fast food restaurant. He said a gunman in a car opened fire on him as he walked down the street. “He walked to the McDonalds which is at 47th and Bishop, and he got shot down at 48th and Bishop,” said Janis Pass, Moss’s grandmother. He was hit four times and suffered severe damage to his abdominal area. Paramedics rushed him to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, where he remains 10 days later in the Intensive Care Unit.)

He walked to McDonald’s on 47th near Laflin and as he walked back, a gunman opened fire on him. “Michael is not in a gang. Michael is an honor roll student,” said Moss’ legal guardian Brenda Herron. His family says he attends Glenbard East High School and is on the basketball team. “Chicago needs to stand up. Where are all the politicians doing, the alderman, the Mayor, everybody. Things like this don’t happen in DuPage County,” Herron said.)
