NBC NEWS
— Homeland Secretary John Kelly: Marijuana is a ‘Dangerous Gateway Drug’ – ANDREW RAFFERTY
http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/homeland-sec-kelly-marijuana-dangerous-gateway-drug-n747901
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly Tuesday called marijuana a “gateway drug” and vowed his agency will uphold federal laws against its possession, a sterner message than he delivered on the topic just last week. “Let me be clear about marijuana. It is a potentially dangerous gateway drug that frequently leads to the use of harder drugs,” Kelly said during a speech about his agency’s mission at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. “Its use and possession is against federal law and until the law is changed by the United States Congress, we in DHS, along with the rest of the federal government, are sworn to uphold all the laws that are on the books,” he added.)

— Lawmakers Want to Put POT SHOPS in Your Neighborhood – Kathy Valente  (DIERSEN: Please join me in filing an opposition witness slip and in attending the hearing at noon tomorrow, Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in room C-600, 6th Floor Michael A. https://illinoisfamily.org/uncategorized/lawmakers-want-put-pot-shops-neighborhood/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) and Illinois State Representative Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) believe that legalizing marijuana for recreational use will be good for Illinois so they have introduced SB 316 and HB 2353 and, as part of the public relations push, formed the Coalition for a Safer Illinois. Yes, Safer. It’s hard to imagine how adding more drugged drivers on the roads and putting more drugs into the hands of our children could possibly make Illinois safer. The bills before the General Assembly would legalize the possession of up to 28 grams of marijuana and allow facilities to sell marijuana products for adults over 21 and tax and regulate those sales “in a manner similar to alcohol.” “Safer?”  Hardly.  We just have to look to the examples of Colorado and Washington State to see the consequences.  Both states legalized marijuana for recreational use in 2013 and 2012 respectively. Colorado now has more pot shops than Starbucks and McDonald’s combined. . .You, too, can help! Call your state representative today and urge him/her to oppose any attempts to legalize or decriminalize marijuana. CLICK HERE. Your rep will be listed as the last entry on the page, once you fill in your zip code and address. Simply click on his/her name. You may also want to fill out an opposition slip to this bill. The proponents are. A hearing is being held (AT NOON) on Wednesday, April 19th, 2017. It’s easy if you follow these steps.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is hard to have the same feelings, though, toward the 40% of undocumented immigrants who came here on a plane, willfully overstayed their tourist visas, then hunkered down and waited for the next round of legalization. And I have some animus toward our dysfunctional immigration system that punishes (by deportation) undocumented immigrants but completely lets off the hook their partners-in-law-breaking, the businesses and individuals that have used their cheap labor over the years. Fact is, if E-verify had been strictly enforced all these years, Trump’s proposed wall would have been rendered unnecessary.)

The filing shows the Rauner camp’s biggest recent expenditure — more than $338,000 — went to a New York-based company called Project Applecart. (See Rauner’s filing). If I sought a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would stress that I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assemble line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)
http://www.wkow.com/story/35158969/professor-sues-wal-mart-over-clean-toilets-description
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Montana State University professor is suing Wal-Mart for libel after he says an employee at the Bozeman store listed his occupation on a fishing license as a “toilet cleaner.” Gilbert Kalonde, assistant professor of technology education at MSU, filed the suit this past week in Gallatin County District Court. Kalonde is seeking unspecified damages. Wal-Mart spokesman Ragan Dickens told The Associated Press: “To our knowledge an administrative process to resolve this with Dr. Kalonde is ongoing. We’ve not been served with the lawsuit, but we take the claims seriously and will respond appropriately with the court.” According to the complaint, Kalonde bought a state fishing license in April 2015, showing the Wal-Mart employee identification of his employment at MSU. But the Wal-Mart employee entered “clean toilets” into the state database as Kalonde’s occupation. The suit contends Wal-Mart exposed Kalonde to “hatred, contempt, ridicule” through the incident.)

They hint/imply/argue/shout that because we gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents, we are nasty selfish filthy rich DINKs (dual income, no kids) and even worse things, and therefore, we can and we should pay more real estate taxes.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170414/news/170419281/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A property tax mix-up involving new Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 board member Anisha Patel’s home resulted in her family saving more than $12,000 by paying taxes to the wrong school district since at least 2008. A Daily Herald analysis of property tax records shows the Patel family paid about $44,000 in taxes to Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59 since 2008 but should have paid closer to $56,000 during that time to District 25. Researchers at Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office discovered Patel’s home was wrongly listed within District 59’s taxing boundaries even though Patel sends her children to schools in District 25. The mistake came to light after Patel won election to the District 25 board April 4. Patel and owners of two neighboring homes — and ultimately their property tax bills — are affected by the revelation.)

There are all kinds of reasons to oppose marijuana.” Steans said 750,000 people admit to smoking marijuana in Illinois.)

http://abc7chicago.com/news/trump-tower-among-chicagos-most-desirable-refugee-employers/1840201/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Refugees displaced by war, terrorism or persecution are moving to Chicago. One of the most desirable places for them to work? Trump Tower. Officially known as the Trump International Hotel and Tower, the 98-story skyscraper on Chicago’s riverfront has become so popular with refugees because they are paid up to $18.00 per hour for entry-level jobs. That’s according to a Chicago-based organization that helps refugees who are “fleeing war, terror and persecution.” Illinois is currently ranked 10th nationally in the number of refugees resettled, with 3,125 permitted residency here in 2016. Besides the Trump Tower, refugee aid officials told the I-Team that other Chicago-area employers popular with refugees are Tyson Foods, Five Star Laundry, Rivers Casino, Lettuce Entertain You and Eli’s Cheesecake. Since September 2015 the United States has admitted more than 117,000 refugees, including more than 1,000 since Trump became president on January 20. But the inflow took a hit under a Trump executive order signed in January that banned citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Last year according to state department data Muslims accounted for nearly half of all refugee admissions into the country. The Trump executive order will reduce the number of refugees annually admitted into the U.S. from 110,000 to a mere 50,000 people-the lowest ceiling in 35 years. It is currently estimated that more than 23 million refugees-half of them children-are fleeing war and repression around the world. Officials at the Trump Tower in Chicago have not responded to messages left by the I-Team. Eli’s Cheesecake officials said they currently employ 10 refugees and many other new immigrants. Others couldn’t put a number on their refugee work force.)

— Trump-supporting mayor Roger Claar appears to survive re-election scare – AP
http://wgntv.com/2017/04/04/suburban-mayor-and-trump-backer-in-tight-re-election-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: BOLINGBROOK, Ill.  — A longtime suburban Chicago mayor who held a fundraiser for President Donald Trump last year was holding on to a narrow lead in his re-election battle with a union organizer backed by top Democrats. With all precincts reporting late Tuesday, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar held a 62-vote lead over Will County Commissioner Jackie Traynere. The county clerk’s office said vote by mail ballots postmarked by April 4 and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The vote tally will be made official April 24. Traynere spokesman Tom Bowen acknowledged because of the number of outstanding votes, Traynere is facing an “uphill battle.” “Jackie called him and congratulated him on a great race,” Bowen said. Claar did not return telephone calls seeking comment late Tuesday.)

— Some Suburban Elections Still In Question With Many Close Races – Bernie Tafoya
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/04/05/some-suburban-elections-still-in-question-with-many-close-races/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tuesday’s suburban elections saw a handful of possible upsets and several tight contests, with some races for mayor separated by only a handful of votes. In southwest suburban Bolingbrook, incumbent Mayor Roger Claar faced his strongest challenge in years, triggered by his support for President Donald Trump. Last September, Claar invited the then-presidential candidate Donald Trump to a fundraiser at the village-owned Bolingbrook Golf Club. Democratic mayoral candidate Jackie Traynere is one voter who hasn’t forgiven Claar. “We went and petitioned the Mayor with 1,100 signatures and we asked him not to invite Donald Trump here [Bolingbrook]. We didn’t feel his message of hate was in step with the community,” Traynere said. Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, won 66 percent of the vote in Bolingbrook, but Claar appeared to hold on for a narrow victory on Tuesday. He led by 104 votes, according to unofficial vote totals in Will and DuPage counties, but Claar acknowledged the race likely won’t be decided for a couple weeks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal has teamed up with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to introduce a bill that would make four-year public college free for families making less than $125,000, and make community college free for all. The $600 billion cost would be funded by a tax on Wall Street speculation. The College for All Act would also reduce student-loan debt by cutting all student- loan interest rates for new borrowers in half; enable existing borrowers to refinance loans based on the interest rates available to new borrowers; and prevent the federal government from profiting off the student-loan program. Its sponsors say the bill would reduce student debt by allowing existing federal aid to cover other college costs, including books, housing and transportation. It would require states and tribes participating in the program to cover the full cost of college for their poorest students. It would also increase the size of work-study programs. The bill’s co-sponsors, all Democrats, include Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. It’s been endorsed by the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association and the American Association of University Professors, among others.)

Not too shabby. What’s a concern, though, is underemployment — a figure that includes jobless people looking for work, part-time workers who want to go full time, and unemployed people who have recently given up looking. The current underemployment rate for young college grads? 12.6%. A three-percentage-point jump from 2007. The picture is worse if you don’t have a college diploma: The underemployment rate for high school grads is 33.7%. (in 2007, it was 26.8%.)

DAILY HERALD
— Many local races have few candidates, but these buck the trend – Kerry Lester
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170404/news/170409696/
— A summary of Daily Herald endorsements  (DIERSEN: Not that my endorsement means anything, but I should write a book about past and present activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who state that they are Republican, but who hint/imply/argue/shout that no one should vote for any candidate that I endorse. The aforesaid include candidates who are on the ballot in my precinct for today’s April 4, 2017 election. Of course, if they do not win, or if they win, but get fewer votes than they expected, they will blame me because I endorsed them in my precinct letter and I displayed their campaign sign in my front yard.)

— Allstate ditches Fox’s O’Reilly show – AP  (DIERSEN: What complaints have been filed against you?  While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years, no complaints that I discriminated against anyone because of their political affiliation, veteran status, “race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information,” or anything else were ever filed against me.  Nevertheless, the Democrats who ran the Post Office 1966-1969, the Democrats who ran IRS 1971-1980, and the Democrats who ran GAO 1980-1997 treated me like many such complaints had been filed against me.  They would not have treated me that way if I had been a Democrat, a minority, a female, and/or a veteran.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170404/NEWS06/170409962/allstate-ditches-foxs-oreilly-show
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bill O’Reilly’s top-rated Fox News show may be starting to feel a financial sting after allegations that he sexually harassed several women. Northbrook-based insurer Allstate, automakers Hyundai and BMW, financial firm T. Rowe Price, drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline and online marketing firm Constant Contact said Tuesday that they have joined Mercedes-Benz in pulling their ads from the show. The moves come after a weekend report in The New York Times that O’Reilly and his employer paid five women $13 million to settle harassment or other allegations of inappropriate conduct by Fox’s star.)
